A Simple Secret to Backing Up A Trailer (YUP ANY TRAILER), Like a Pro

many people have trouble backing up a trailer and this can be any kind of trailer it can be a boat trailer a utility trailer a camper trailer or a tractor trailer today i'm going to show you a simple trick so you can back up any trailer with ease this video is brought to you by great lakes cold logistics now you guys know i love small trucking companies these guys are a small outfit they're just outside of pittsburgh they've got new trucks coming in they've got a sign-on bonus of ten thousand dollars payable in three months check them out at drivegreatlakes.com the difficulty most people have is when backing up they don't know which way to turn the steering wheel to make the trailer go the way they want it to to demonstrate we'll use my car and we'll hook up and back up with my little utility trailer once i get hooked up i've set up this little laneway to use as a backing area to demonstrate how to put the trailer in the hole so after backing in the car and positioning it correctly with the ball hitch and get out and look as many times as you need to we're going to lower the trailer onto the ball hitch lock it down hook up the safety chains hook up the light cord and then flip up the landing gear leg after you've finished hooking up even a small trailer like this needs a full circle check before you take off just to make sure everything's okay i'll check the tires i'll check the tail lights to make sure they're functioning properly i'm going to check the tailgate to make sure it's fastened and i'm going to check the hitch and then lock it down just to make sure everything's secure before we take off finally you should install some sort of a safety lock to make sure the latch doesn't pop open when you're underway now some people will just use a cotter pin i prefer a key lock pin system and it acts as an anti-theft device at the same time so now it's finally time to back up so the trick is instead of putting your hand on the top of the steering wheel put your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel and when you turn your hand to the right that's the direction the trailer will go and if you swing it to the left that's the direction the trailer will go and then it's simply a matter of watching your mirrors and not over steering too much which is the other mistake most people make so now let's look at a visual example of what that looks like so finally just another simple trick when you're backing up a trailer this short it's hard to see in the mirrors of the car so i attached an antenna just to make the back end of the trailer easier to see in the mirrors from the car just a little trick to help keep track of where the trailer is so remember grab the steering wheel at the bottom of the wheel if you want the trailer to track to the right turn your hand to the right if you want the trailer to track to the left turn your hand to the left this trick works with big trailers little trailers semi-trailers anything if you're new with your cdl and you want to practice just get out your car hook up to a little trailer and try it and practice that way it's all the same it's all one pintle hitch move left or right and it works with everything i'm sure this trick will help you stay safe keep the rubber side down we'll see on the backhoe [Music] you
