in the video i made about modernizing the ptr 91 and the g3 platform i was going for parody with a modern ar-10 build so i basically threw a bunch of tactical parts on the 91 to see if any of them actually stuck they did kind of but it was clearly a waste of time and money the only good reason to choose the g3 as the basis for your modern fighting rifle is if you bought several million of them back in the 60s and you can't afford to replace all those guns magazines and bainu lbe if you're trying to set up a btr-91 is a fighting rifle you have two directions you can take it it's not a question of light versus heavy because there's really no way to get one of these to be lightweight the rifle itself is already really heavy and you have to add weight to add capability no matter what the vtr 91 is not going to be a great choice for a rifle you intend to hike around with so the two options you have for a g3 clone rifle is to go long range or short range your short range option is to set the rifle up for close quarters or vehicle based operations weight doesn't matter because you're not moving at long distances aside from transporting it in a vehicle your long range option is to use it in a static position like for a checkpoint gun still my favorite net in fancyism or in an overwatch position you aren't planning to move it much just set it up and let it sit there the main differences between those two configurations is going to be barrel length and optics solution the model of ptr you buy would depend on which of those two setups you're planning to do if you're going for long range the best version is the fr ptr 102 with the 18 inch bull barrel that comes with an m lock handguard that saves a crucial step of replacing the handguard and saves a bit of money it's also probably the best option in terms of barrel length you save almost no weight going with the stepped barrel versus the bull barrel and weight isn't super important for this pou to begin with if you want to set this up for close range your options are probably the 16 inch barreled btr a3sk or the 12 inch barreled ptrk 3p pistol variant the 16 inch a3sk is kind of a weird hybrid design because it has the 16 inch barrel but uses the full length rifle handguard it could be cool because it gives you the full real estate of the 18 inch version's handguard including mounting slots forward of the charging handle which allows you to mount accessories that won't interfere with the path of the charging handle the 12-inch version is going to need a good brace or a stock and some sbr paperwork but it would be an awesome package it's very close to the configuration of the real g3k this is my attempt to make a sensible ptr-91 i'm still stuck with the 18 inch stepped barrel version and if i do sell it i'll be replacing it with nothing so we're just going to keep putting parts on that one let's look at the sensible version i replaced the keymod handguard with the cheap aimsports m-lok handguard it's pretty much exactly the same weight as the old handguard but i can use magpul rail covers and vertical grips which i do like the aim sports handguard is about 50 bucks compared to over 150 for a midwest industries handguard so you might think it couldn't possibly be any good and you're right it's not the fit and finish was pretty bad it took a few love taps of the mallet to get it to seat on the gun properly and i spray painted over the thin and uneven finish i think it will be functionally fine but it wears through to bare metal in no time i removed the vg6 gamma muzzle break i had on the gun it was extremely effective but very obnoxious i replaced it with the standard flash hider again if you want to use a ptr as a precision rifle then a little bit of extra muzzle climb isn't a big deal if you want to do some heavy duty tactical [ __ ] you probably will want a badass muzzle break on there either the long or close range setups will require you to do something about the stock either replace it with a spur stock or magpul prs stock or add a cheek riser to the factory stock the snap-on cheek risers for the factory stocks were getting rare but ac unity just started making them so they're back on the market and pretty affordable these cheek risers are definitely optimized for tall scopes on the claw mouse if you're using a ptr with a welded rail you don't need that much cheek rise with the welded rail ptr and a standard 1.5 inch tall scope mount i find the cheek piece is uncomfortably high it works better with a 1.9 inch riser but then you have to ask yourself what the point even is the cheek piece on the spur stock is at a good height for welded rail optics that's what it was designed for anyway and the magpul prs2 stock is adjustable to any height you need so those are your best bets the factory plastic stock with the rubber cheek piece attached actually weighs more than the spur stock i weighed these by comparing two complete end cap assemblies the factory stock end cap assembly i weighed had a stock buffer in it the spur stock assembly had the enhanced buffer in it which weighs about twice as much as the stock buffer and the spur assembly was still significantly lighter than the plastic stock with the add-on cheek piece putting weight at the back of the ptr 91 actually makes it balance better and feel a little less unwieldy though and the rubberized cheek piece is very comfortable i think claw mounted optics rails are antiquated garbage and you shouldn't [ __ ] around with that stuff but some people still appreciate the classics as far as the choice of optics basically any red dot would be a good choice for your close range option for the long range option you would probably want a higher magnification scope to take advantage of the long range potential of 308 winchester out of a long barrel i half-assed it with an lpvo this is a black hound genesis 1-6 don't take this as a recommendation of lpvos for the ptr in general or the blackhound genesis in particular i wouldn't recommend this scope at all the reason you might be tempted to use an lpvo is that the overall length of your scope has to be pretty short to clear the charging handle you can get away with about a 12 inch scope at maximum before you start to have clearance issues a lot of lpvos are right around the 10 inch range generally speaking a scope under 12 inches long will probably be an lpvo or a mid-range scope like a 3-9 or 2-10 those aren't the most popular magnification ranges anymore but they are reasonably light and compact and they give you a very usable magnification range basically i would recommend you don't half-ass it with an lpvo choose the right optic for your barrel length so there you have it another configuration of the ptr-91 that i don't really like as far as handling goes without the aggressive muzzle break and with the heavy buffer it's significantly worse i don't think the heavy buffer actually does anything or if it does it's minor enough that it doesn't counteract the losses from removing the muzzle brake see if the heavy buffer really does anything for us without the muzzle break not really anyway i'd like to promise you that i won't make any more videos about the ptr-91 but i'm totally gonna make more videos about the ptr-91 i don't think i can help it my dream configuration right now is the 12 inch btr k3p with a spur stock a neotec vertical grip ir unit and a muzzle brake i might just be saying that because i don't have one the grass is probably no greener on the other side of the fence thanks for watching see you later this is all i got
