A Saturday in Louisiana's Cajun Country (2019)

well at Saturday morning in Southwest Louisiana and it's 10:30 a.m. and then getting a late start to the day musics been playing live in a couple places for a couple of hours now so let's make it to Eunice Louisiana is our first stop that's about close to an hour away from here so I left Lafayette on my way to Eunice and passing through Roberts Cove and there's the Robert School with Jared German heritage museum Roberts Cove is known as a German and clay or more specifically just a start the German settled community here in Louisiana I haven't been to that Heritage Museum yet but I'm really curious to know about the history of the German settlers in this area next stop sab was music shop in Eunice well here we are tabla music Center on the outskirts of Eunice Louisiana so Saturday morning gem here every Saturday morning for the last 50 years or so almost every Saturday morning when the marks abroad has finally been there not travelling somewhere perhaps for gig at a music festival for example I suppose see what's happening on the Sunday morning along the route 90 [Music] [Applause] [Music] well the Savoie music tenor Jam finished a few minutes before noon it was a nice time good music nice little short chat with Monsieur Dubois and it was great to see some of the musicians playing there such as Harry Lafleur and cause Fontenot both of whom were almost literally at death's door a few months ago they bounced back white nicely I was surprised to see especially mr. Lafleur playing so well his fiddle was not doing so well last time I saw it was nice to see him and Paul Anastasia was playing fiddle he's a very renowned musicians played with asleep at the wheel and Merle Haggard and he's a great fiddler also plays with stop the clock Cowboys who play once a month in Lafayette at the feed and seed usually the second Sunday of the month it's great 9 piece 10 piece Texas swing band that also includes Sam Broussard and David Grilli amongst other great musicians such as Gary Numan the son of Jimmy C Newman so now it's on to mom ooh a little bit north of here to go to the Fred's lounge and see Don Broussard and Louisiana stars is it what the Louisiana [Music] [Music] [Music] well here we are Fred slouchin model gonna go see dog Broussard in the Louisiana stars Ron Broussard great accordion player he had his band play five times a weekend every weekend and wait so much I thought that was his full-time gig but as it turns out he's a banker Loveleen Cajun music so he plays it on mehendi days approaching the weekend mr. Louisiana [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] just saw Baba a bear on accordion sitting in for Broussard was taking a break a lot of music to play still this weekend so he's gonna yeah get him to set in Baba to sit in on a few songs he's great obviously baba is the great grandson of my religion and the grandson of Eddie Lucerne so he's got his own band going on too so I spoke to Don while he was taking a break and he's nice little discussion with them and as it turns out I just found out we were born on the same day literally on the same day same month same year so that was a pleasant surprise and he's like I said he's going off to kaplan to play at the back in the saddle ended one sunday like his regular cake so here I am the tea boys just on the outskirts of Mamu I'm hoping to get some their great boudin but big metal door there means they're closed so next stop is Bayou Teche brewing for Adeline Miller and there's a media - Cajun band playing and that should be nice it's a great place to go on Saturdays and even other days of the week Friday night they have live Cajun music also and Sunday afternoon they have the Cajun music jam and they have mobile cigar lounge Johnnie Johnson Manning the trailer and that is a sight to be seen so we'll be there soon and we'll check that out on the road to Arnaudville there was a bridge out so there was a detour that brought me somewhere I think near the outskirts of Lille plaid and I'd pass in front of Paul's meat market grocery fresh and smoked Cajun meats food a cracklins smoked sausage [Applause] [Music] bojong playing on table 101.1 you look flat you nice late great boat off [Music] [Music] forgot I change the channel to uh KRV s just the PBS station and laughing it urban Fusiliers zydeco stop radio show Saturday afternoons that song was Bois Jacques reach Arts Club and I had the great pleasure of seeing Bois Jacques at Renard's Club at my first trip to Louisiana December 1996 I saw him play there with Lulu Shabbos so that was a great introduction to the live music of Louisiana my first trip to see two legends of latigo for now both turns and detours in Opelousas port Burien Leoville here yeah Bernardo Bayou Teche brewing [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] well it's now just after midnight and that Biotest brewing after the music was over the music trivia evening started and our team won good when free beer and swamp tour tickets we got 21 out of 24 questions right so we're pretty happy with that then I went to post party with a fire in the backyard and the gumbo and enough food otherwise to feed an army and now I'm here to catch the last few songs probably we shot Michael to say and lash peas another bed and he started up with some other members that I not just yet I am so lame really get these wrapping things up you say there [Music] Playboy's another the end of it live music idiot today [Music] Louisiana bring down [Applause] [Music] [Music] all right it's 2:20 a.m. and I'm leaving the Blue Moon Saloon that is gonna leave with the music get lively dancing several people it's fun now I think the night's officially over
