A Heart For Diaconal Ministry

i grew up in an op church and my dad was a deacon and i still remember as a kid um here's just an example of diagonal service that was very poignant that stands out in my mind we are headed i grew up in southern california we were headed up a um up a mountain road uh early in the morning uh on a little trip and um we came by there was a car by the side of the road and uh me and my siblings we were all piled in the back of the pickup truck and so we were you know back in the day you could do that with uh in the in the shell you know we had a shell in the back and you there was no communication between the cabin and the shell but i just remember my dad pulling over because there was a car by the side of the road and uh seeing him get out of the car go and it's very cold outside and going and knocking on the window and there were two girls in this car who had basically they had this is before cell phones and everything else we take for granted and they had been they had run out of gas or something like that and they were stuck there and they were freezing cold and the next thing we know he was popping the popping the door open and bringing them in and we were gonna go get them gas or whatever it was and just his um his compassion and mercy towards the stranger and um and just serving them and that how that really impacted me um as a as a as a boy and just seeing um very similar to the the good samaritan right ministering to just somebody literally on the side of the road needing help and so and that and be diagonal that diagonal spirit was definitely a part of my father and um and he by his example he he taught that to his kids
