A Day at the Google Office in San Francisco | Day in the Life of a Software Engineer at Google

[Music] so [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] hey everyone i'm drawn your friend in tech if you're new to my channel i'm a software engineer at google working on android and the google pixel and today i'm going to take you through a day in my life as i work from the google san francisco office if you saw my last office vlog you know my desk is in mountain view and my team is in mountain view but i'm working from san francisco they've got a pretty nice setup over here if you want to work in sf you just have to book a desk and then they will assign you one of the many desks they have set up and you can use it for the whole day so all the desks are electronics sit and stand desks that you can control with buttons kind of like the one i showed in my last vlog and then there's a monitor a mouse and a keyboard i'm probably not going to use them just because i don't really want to touch them and i'm perfectly fine just using my 16 inch macbook pro but it's nice that they offer that so my desk is in front of a window which is nice because i have a view of the city but i wish i was on the other side of the building because they have a view of the bay bridge and it looks so pretty so today's vlog is going to be fun i hope you learn a lot about what it's like to be a software engineer and what it's like to be a software engineer at google specifically i know a lot of you have commented saying how i inspire you and i think that's really so great i think if you want to work at google you should definitely apply i think there's a lot of resources online to help you and i'm glad that i can be one of them so yeah let me know if this brings you value or what else i can do to help you out i really do think everyone can work at google so right now it's 10 a.m and there's only one other person in my area and they're sitting right behind me which is unfortunate because i feel kind of weird filming because they'd be in the background but yeah i have a lot of work to do today i have some documentation to update i have code reviews i'm still waiting for people to review my code and then i have some other coding projects i need to get into too luckily i have no meetings today so i can do a lot of focused work and i'm definitely going to do the pomodoro timer because that definitely definitely i keep saying definitely it really helped me out last time yeah i'm excited to take can see the bridge let me see if i can fix that we better get out the picture can you see it i don't know okay anyways i'm outside eating lunch i grab some food from the micro kitchen um so what i got is a chicken caesar wrap and then i got some fruits but i'm actually sitting next to flowers and there's a bunch of bees pollinating it right now i don't think they sting well they haven't stung me yet but i probably won't try and eat the fruits out here just in case they do want to get in there so yeah gonna eat my food i'm gonna enjoy the view and then i'll probably walk around the city get some nice shots [Music] [Music] do [Music] uh [Music] [Music] uh [Music] uh [Music] all right hey everyone it's now 2 p.m and i just got back from my break so you probably saw me go to the other building that had the wellness center the fitness center the arcade games the murals the massage chair the walking treadmill there's lots of cool stuff over there they had awesome views of the brave bridge i actually got a lot of stuff done i started working on my document i need to finish by wednesday i got an email saying my code was reviewed and i have no comments or changes to make so that's really nice all that's left for me to do is submit it and then tomorrow i have my weekly meeting with my manager where we check in with each other i have a new project that i've been working on and so the rest of the day i'll just be coding trying to get something working i am tempted to go to the gym here i brought my gym clothes and everything it would be nice to work out in a full gym but the weather is so nice today that i kind of just want to walk around the city so i need to think about it some more we'll see yeah that's my update i'm gonna go back to work [Music] [Music] [Music] bye [Music] all right i'm all done for the day so let me just pack up all this stuff and then i'll see you outside [Music] uh [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right so i'm going to attempt to vlog in public it is kind of noisy out here i can tell it's picking up a lot of sound so hopefully you can hear me but today was a really good day i feel really productive and i'm happy with my progress so one thing i did notice is i'm a lot more tired when i do go into the office and i think that's because you know commuting is draining taking breaks is a lot different can't just lay in bed i don't know if there's any nap pods but i probably would have taken a nap if i found one but yeah so far we're set to return to the office in october i know a lot of other companies have reported that they pushed back to january 2022 so that'd be interesting if we do get it pushed back yeah so i thought i would address some common questions i got on my last day in the office vlog and one of the questions is how many hours do i work and i would say i work about eight hours today and 40 hours a week kind of normal i know a lot of people think that google employees either don't work hard because we have all these perks we're always like playing games whatever or there's also people that think google employees get worked to death which is why google has all these perks to keep you in the office and i think and i think that can be true for some people but not for me i know i try and be intentional with my time to make sure that i don't overwork myself and that i stay focused and get the stuff i want to get done done and so i think it really depends i feel like my team is really good about work-life balance and taking breaks when you need to but i have heard of other teams that are more stressful to be on and and teams that have like on-call positions where like if something breaks and you're on call you have to respond to it right away but my team doesn't have that so i can't speak to any of that another question i get asked a lot is how do i know when i'm done for the day and i think it comes down to proper planning you know making sure that you don't take on more work than you can handle so everything you can do can be done within a certain amount of time such that you're only working about eight hours a day so it really depends what other questions do i get so a lot of the other questions i got were frequently asked questions and i answered all of those in my q a video i'll pop it up here or here so yeah i think those were my common questions that i wanted to get answered in this video right now i still have quite a bit of time like 30 minutes to just walk around so i'm gonna go down [Applause] not sure which way i think i'm so tired i don't know what to say
