hello everyone my name is Katie and welcome back to my channel so in today's video we are reviewing 72 Seasons the brand new album from Metallica so you guys have seen me do a few reaction videos for the singles that came out for this album so I'm not really going to be breaking down those songs today you can kind of watch those reactions if you really want to know every thought I have about those songs but I'm gonna try to do like a track by track review of this album this is more of like a first impressions review because the album did just come out and I've only listened to it fully two times at the time of filming this so my opinions later on might change um I do want to give like a little disclaimer that all of the opinions in this video are subjective like I'm not trying to really give an objective rating or review on this album this is mostly just going to be based on my personal tastes and opinions so whatever you disagree with just let me know in the comments below we can have a musical conversation you know that's really why I make these kind of videos It's not really to like sound entitled to these people's music or try to say that my opinions are correct or something it's more of just to start a conversation and you know make friends who like the same music as me so I hope all of that makes sense I really do enjoy just breaking down stuff especially when my favorite bands come out with new music I love to like analyze it and really break down how I feel about it you know like I said first I'm going to do like a track by track review and then I'm gonna give like an overall View and rating of the album so the first song on the album is 72 Seasons the title track I did make a reaction video to that but overall I did like that song I thought it was a little bit boring and sort of drug out I do think it's one of the better songs on the album in hindsight you'll find out why throughout the video but let's talk about the First new song that we hadn't ever heard before Shadows follow so this one had one of those hip swinging grooves in it you know I kind of like when Metallica does that it's kind of like Black Album meets hardwired you know you got that modern Metallica sound but with the Black Album Groove and slowness Maybe a little bit of load and reload as well in the notes I took here I said it definitely sounds like a Hatfield and Lars song so I guess I meant I don't know a lot of times you can tell when it's just James and Lars in the studio together I'm sure you guys know what I mean they have this certain Dynamic that they do in their songs and uh it kind of ends up making all the songs sound the same and generic over time but I just can always tell when it's those two who wrote the song by themselves which is most of the songs if I'm honest I wrote down here that the lyrics are good that's going to be a common theme throughout this review is the lyrics and these songs are very vulnerable I feel like James just poured his heart and soul out in the lyrics to these songs I think I started losing hope listening to the song because I I said modern Metallica formula you know everything when they write these new songs it's very formulated and it just sounds like stock music like very generic and copy and paste a lot of times I said please don't be like the others frowny face because the very first song that was new to me I already was like no please don't sound like all the other songs like I want something different going into this album I really wanted something that was just going to be completely different than anything we've done before or just different than they've done recently just something you know the next note says unfortunately the solo was the same as always that's a common theme on this album as well a lot of the Kirk Hammett solos were a little bit repetitive and honestly I feel like you could take a lot of his solos from one song and like mix it with another song and you wouldn't even notice a difference overall this first song I just thought it sounded a little bit too clean and like kind of over produced I really did like the lyrics but it just had that basic sound that I was a little bit tired of things got a little bit better on the next track which was called Sleep Walk my life away they actually released a music video for that today as well and uh it started off a little different it had like a base intro which I really like I love when Rob Trujillo gets a moment to shine in this band and um he actually did have some writing credits on some of the songs on this album which is really cool but um yeah that one started off a little bit different it was finally something new it did have a groovy riff kind of like Black Album and load Vibes I did notice they got a little groovy on this album like half the album was faster speed metal Slash thrashy songs and a lot of it was Groove my notes say the chorus is meh so basically if I say something's math that just means I'm bored and I said that these lyrics could have used a more doomy or melancholic sound I feel like a lot of the times in these songs on this album the lyrics were really good or like really emotional or dark but the music itself didn't match the lyrics like um he'd be singing about something really sad but the notes that it was sung in was like a beat and like I don't know if that was on purpose to be like a contrast of each other I don't know but it didn't really work for me I felt like it didn't match what he was saying like a lot of his vulnerability was kind of going to waste because the songs just did not match the vibe at all I wrote down that the song composition was getting old you know a lot of these newer Metallica songs songs it's like you start off with a long intro you have the first verse then of course then a verse then of course Kirk plays the same predictable solo you guys know what I mean like I hate to be so negative but it is really predictable I feel like the album could have been cut in half and they could release like half the songs and it still would have been the same album or like the songs could have been half the length that they were something like that I did write down that the final riff in that song was menacing I actually don't remember what that is now but there were quite a few like almost doomy riffs on this album like kind of like Black Sabbath Vibes I think it was in the next song You must burn so we'll talk about that one that one had some Trujillo riding credits and I love when Rob gets to have a hand in the songwriting I don't know if he came up with the riffs in this song or not but it did have some like Sabbath riffs which I thought was really interesting um it was like a really slow and heavy song like it was the first time throughout listening to this album that I made like a stink face I was like so uh it kind of gave me like load and reload Vibes it was a little bit darker um like I said just do me like old school Sabbath sound there was a part where the notes start to descend and it sounds like you're like descending into hell you know the song is about like burning witches at the stake and all that stuff you know I I think it's kind of metaphorical but whatever um there was one part where the vocals got really like eerie and the way that they mixed it was really cool it was like the most creative they got on the album with vocal harmonies and all this different stuff that part was really cool and I think that makes the song stand out a lot on this album it's one of the most unique apparently I wrote down that it was my favorite track so far but not amazing so at that point in time I was just like trying to find things I liked but I still wasn't like oh my God this is so good you know oh no next up we have the crown of barbed wire okay you guys I wanted to like this song I feel like the meaning was cool I think it kind of deals with James's struggle of being famous and like not knowing how to handle it or like maybe famous challenging to deal with I don't really know but the lyric so tight that he kept saying it was throwing me off so bad I couldn't help but be immature and giggle every time I said so tired foreign I just didn't like it I didn't like the main Melody of the chorus every time he said so tight it was killing me the whole time and I don't know just something about it it sounded kind of like a rock and roll like cover band you see like a bar at midnight I don't know like it just sounded like a bunch of old dudes jamming out I don't know how to explain it but I hated this song I think I was talking about the chorus here I said his voice sounds so odd yeah he just sounded weird and like old and I don't know how to explain it it was strange in this song apparently this is when I felt like giving up because I said bruh Kirk needs to just do his own thing I think I heard Kirk Solo in this song and I was like he just needs to do his own music like when he released portals his own solo album that was amazing uh I think he's just not very passionate about riding with Metallica anymore like I feel like he just shows up to the studio and just like doesn't really give much of anything to go off of like James said that him and Lars wanted to allow Robin Kirk some more creative freedom in this album and that they tried to do that but I just think the passion isn't there and you can hear it in the solos like Kirk is a skilled guitarist but when it comes to actually riding a solo it's not very I guess composed is the word it's just kind of thrown out there jammed out there he just does a few licks and then that's it like it's just not special anymore I also said James needs to do a non-metal album I think it would be cool if James brinsed off and did something maybe like load and reload like some rock slash maybe a little country Vibes southern rock I don't know I just feel like we're at the point now that Metallica has so many amazing albums and they've released so many songs over the years that they don't ever really have to release anything together ever again they have so many songs that they can perform live that they could tour forever like they don't really have to release anything new and they don't even have to release an album to sell out a tour like it really has nothing to do with that anymore they could just announce the tour at any moment and people are gonna buy tickets so I'm like I don't know I I just started to feel like maybe they should like call it quits with the the album writing because it's just not working out anymore I just don't think the vibe is there I don't think the passion is there between all of them I feel like James is the only one that really brings anything to the table Lars just kind of like throws in some drum beats and that's pretty much it like there's not much to go off of if it's just one person and I think whatever producer they're working with Right Now isn't telling them like what's good and what's bad and they're just kind of letting them do what they want at least that's the vibe that I get like I feel like they're not getting that outside ear telling them what to do or they're telling them to play it too safe like there's not very many risky aspects of this album it's all very generic and Bland and easily digestible but I don't really like that kind of thing I like things that are harder to chew and you got to think about it more it takes more brain power you know what I mean so just whatever producer they're working with right now I feel like they didn't really do their job on this one they made it sound too clean and produced and safe next up is chasing light I said the beginning made me jump yeah I think I think the first line where James started singing I like jumped because I had my headphones on really loud and it scared me and then I said the music doesn't match the lyrics it just didn't I was like these lyrics are good and dark and powerful and the music was just not working out apparently I was trying to stay positive at this point because I said at least we're getting a cool tour okay I am excited for the tour for this album but we could have just went without these songs y'all next up is too far gone and I actually kind of like this one I've listened to its wise like this of course these notes are from my first time listening I have listened to it another time I like this one it's a little bit catchier I like the lyrics um I said emotional lyrics frowny face because I'm related to it it's like am I too far gone to save I really felt that um I said man I'd do anything to hear this in a more dynamic or complex song I really wish I keep saying those words over and over dynamica complex but gosh I would do anything for this vulnerability and this passion and this emotion to be put into a better song because there's so much potential there I love that Melody where he says am I too far gone safe [Music] I love that there is a nice like dual guitar Harmony moment in this song that I really liked and some really nice vocals in the bridge overall this was one of the better songs on the album for me next we have room of mirrors I overall liked this one I like the speed it was a little bit faster of a song the lyrics are really cool it was more about Fame and media scrutiny and like how these news articles come out about people and like they over dramaticize and over exaggerate everything that happens in these people's lives I thought that was really interesting to hear from him this is the moment where I said this is James and lars's album in my opinion okay so this is another song that was written by Hitman Mars alone and um this whole album is really just theirs because you got like the speed metal the thrashy drums from Lars I think lars's drumming is actually really good on this album I think he's been doing a lot of work since hardwired and I think he's doing a great job and then of course you have James with his vulnerability and the riffs that he wrote for this album some good rhythm guitar work here and there I just feel like this album really belongs to them too towards the end of Kirk Solo in this song uh it kind of got me and it started to turn a little bit like power metal-ish I really did like this one like it wasn't outstanding but it was one of the better ones so the album finishes off with an 11 minute track and it's crazy because this is my favorite song from the whole album other than some of the singles I do like if Darkness had a sun and screaming suicide and those songs I do like the four singles that came out first but I think in a Morata is probably the best song on this album as a whole I don't know what it is it just really connected with me first off the song ina Morata means female lover so you could probably predict that this song is going to be about divorce um to me I think it's about James's recent divorce and um kind of gives the vibe of the songs about like a toxic relationship and like a love and hate relationship you love that person but you resent that person that sort of thing it's really dark but it's not just the lyrics in this one the overall composition of the song is the most advanced out of the whole album it's more Progressive there's a lot going on I mean it is 11 minutes for a reason instead of doing an instrumental on this album it seems like this one was like the placeholder for an instrumental they just went all out I feel like this the song that they really all the members really like did something on this one this song had the most authenticity and passion out of all of them for me I wrote here that I love the dark sound I said it feels like a Black Widow is coming to get me I don't know what James did in riding the riffs in this song or whatever but he did make it feel like there was like this evil like contemptuous contemptuous whatever coming to get you like if that's how he describes his love life I think this song had the best guitar solo and it had one of the best Jewel guitar moments I love when James and Kirk like duet with each other and harmonize so beautiful and overall I think if more of the album was written like this song I would have liked the full album a lot more I would do anything for more of the album to sound like this I think this song is sort of like The Unforgiven or the Fade to Black or the My Friend of Misery of this album you know I was hoping for one of those and this is as close to that as we got I was wanting something that was a little bit more valid e but this one will do you know I do like it it's sad that I can't say that I love it but maybe it'll grow on me more but it's definitely my favorite on the album other than Lexy Turner screaming suicide I think those were really good thrashy speed metal songs um I understand why they made those the singles and I think if Darkness had a son was really good I think that was one of the more powerful ones in all areas so overall right now I'm a little bit disappointed in the album but I will say I don't think Metallica is really that capable of making a Bad album like even their worst songs aren't really bad they're usually just a little bit boring and simple so I mean we're comparing it to the band that made Master of Puppets like let's be real here so anything that released that isn't up to that caliber is going to be looked down on but if it was another band I don't know I don't think people would be like criticizing it as hard but I will say that I wanted it to be a little bit more exciting I don't know it just lost me a lot throughout the album right now I think I would give it an objective rating like musically speaking a 3.5 out of 5. maybe knock it down to a three out of five I'm really stuck on that um I think personally subjectively after listening to it twice I'll give it a three out of five so I will give credit where credit is due like they're all talented musicians and James is a great Lyricist and Lars like I said great job drumming on this album he really has been proving himself in his old age like every time he did it on hardwired too he's better than he gets credit for and um I do think right now that they really shine playing live like I think this tour is going to be really fun that's really just the best thing that they could do right now like for me Metallica can never release anything ever again and I'll still love them forever they can release 50 bad albums and I would still love them like they have such a strong Legacy that it really doesn't even matter anymore like they've already proved themselves so if they're still passionate about this stuff they should still do it um but I kind of doubt that there's a lot of passion there at least not from all the members I don't know what do you think so I guess that's my Metallica 72 Seasons album review so I guess we'll see how this album grows on me over time uh let me know in the comments down below what you would rate this album like give it a score out of five and let me know um but I guess I'm gonna go ahead and wrap up this video right here so thank you guys so much for watching if you enjoyed it make sure you hit the like button and subscribe for future music related content and I'll see you in the next one bye
