the gmt master pepsi an iconic rolex design for decades whether you love or hate rolex watches you have to agree this style is a classic and has been replicated by many watch houses over the years rolex designed the GMT master is a tool for pilots but it's become a very popular consumer product in itself the GMT master 2 was its successor and I uploaded a video dealing with one of those recently there's a link in the description below but this stainless steel model landed on my workbench recently and as you can see is looking a little bit tired I've been informed that it was purchased in 1981 from a Rolex agency in Kuwait apparently it was the only one in the shop which wasn't gold and plastered in diamonds it was purchased for a very reasonable 500 pounds the since then the bezel insert has dropped out and that's been replaced and the metal strap has also been replaced due to problematic links on the original and it's been serviced a few times but the last time was in 2004 buy a Rolex shop in Dubai so is well over to your service as I mentioned in my last rolex video I'm not an authorized Rolex service technician myself neither have I been trained by Rolex I've been a professional independent watch repair er for several decades but I never wanted to specialize in a particular brand so the methods shown in this video may not be official methods as taught by Rolex but they do stack up with general watch repairing principles the owner of the watch is fully aware of this and has accepted that fact but okay let's get this watch inspected and see what we can find and I'll just start by removing the metal strap from the watch case [Music] now I've loosened the back on my case opener and it can just be twisted off and described on the inside of the watch back I can see free separate watchmakers markings indicating that this watch has been serviced at least three times before removing the movement from the watch case I'll remove the automatic assembly this is secured with free screws [Music] sadly I can see some quite deep scratches on the underside of the automatic bridge and there is a strange indent around the circumference of the watch movement where here would normally indicate a one oscillating weight axle however this actually looks like an indent rather than wear and the weight axle actually seems fine so possibly it was pressed too hard against a watch movement holder in the past during a service and this hole in the main plate has some quite deep scars doesn't look very nice at all all this is cosmetic damage so far I mean none that could cause performance issues but it looks a bit I mean this is shame is a nice movement but it's been handled pretty poorly in the past but I shall continue now and removed the movement from the watch case so first I need to remove the crown and stem [Music] and there are two case crews and they need to be tightened towards the movement main plate in order to release the movement from the case and once this is done the whole movement is turned so that the key screws are lined up with gaps in the case and the movement can be released [Music] you [Music] now can remove the what hand and a dial [Music] now the loom here on the dial is contaminated and looks like it was touched by bare fingers in the past and not dealt with after now may be able to clean this up a little later but first let's continue stripping this down [Music] you [Music] the dial is secured with two tile screws and with the dial removed I can remove the calendar and motion works [Music] now before I continue as you just check its performance I've went the watch out and I'm testing it on my time graph and it looks like it's gaining roughly 30 seconds a day [Music] [Music] [Music] okay I shall continue and remove the second opinion [Music] and now she'll remove the balanced assembly [Music] now letting the power down from the mainspring and with the power released I can remove the pallet fog [Music] now shall continue and remove the ratchet wheel and the click works [Music] [Music] I have a special tool which allows me to safely remove the seconds wheel this is friction fitted to the fourth wheel [Music] and now can remove the cram wheel [Music] [Music] you [Music] time for the train wheel bridge to come off and this of course exposes the Train of wheels [Music] and notice the balance hacking feature here this is a thin brass lever which extends out to fouled a balance when the crown is pulled out this effectively stops the watch when you need to set the time and now it's time to remove the barrel bridge [Music] the hack is secured with a shouldered screw and is manipulated by a post extending from the setting lever now can remove the barrel turning the movement over I can now remove the e keyless works [Music] you [Music] [Music] [Music] and finally I can take the automatic assembly to pieces [Music] [Music] and the scratches here look like they were caused by a sharp tool used when removing this spring lip [Music] that's it the movement is fully stripped down I can clean the pass off-camera and then we can get this movement lubricated and reassembled [Music] and we shall start by installing the mainspring into the barrel [Music] you [Music] you I'm removing the N stones here in order to clean them and manually apply oil [Music] you [Music] [Music] and now I can replace the barrel [Music] with this movement the setting lever screw and the balance hack needs to be placed before the barrel bridge is installed [Music] and now I can install the Train of wheels and fit their bridge [Music] you [Music] and with that done I can install the crown wheel assembly [Music] you [Music] you and now the clique works can be refitted [Music] and on goes the ratchet wheel [Music] now with the barrel bridge assembly installed I can now assemble the keyless works and it will and can opinion [Music] [Music] [Music] you [Music] you [Music] you [Music] now I'm ready to fit the palettes and the balanced assembly [Music] [Music] you [Music] you [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] now I can install the center ii components [Music] and with that done I shall reassemble the automatic works [Music] a quick check on the timer and I can see that I really need to regulate the balance now and on this particular caliber of what it means that I have to manipulate timing screws on the balance wheel there are two that need to be adjusted and they're opposite each other and they have a unique star-shaped design to do this we use a special device called a micro Stella tool and this allows you to finally adjust the screws by the equivalent of one second increments I have posted the full usage instructions in the file section of our Facebook group as a link to that in the description below [Music] but as you can see with a lot of tweaking we've managed to iron out the wrinkles of the poor performance shown before and it looks pretty decent now [Music] and there's still work to do though as she'll continue and assemble the dial side component namely the calendar and motion works you [Music] and on goes the dial-in hands [Music] you [Music] and I've cleaned up the marks on the dial as much as I could so now I can place the movement back in the case which I've also tied it up a little now this is my casing pushing which was manufactured and sent to me by a fellow youtuber his name is will from that 3d print and watch guy and for those interested there's a link in the description of this video where he details how he made it thanks well this is absolutely fantastic Cheers [Music] [Music] you well that's it all done it doesn't look brand-new by any means but it does look a lot better and the performance has very much been improved let me
