992 Porsche 911 GT3 | evo REVIEW

the seventh generation gt3 might look like a gt3 on steroids but beneath its rippling new muscles it's actually lighter than the 991 where it counts and says porsche has a much more efficient aerodynamic package that makes it quantifiably quicker around the track the engine and 7-speed pdk gearbox are updated versions of now familiar items power is quoted at 503 bhp with torque up by a fraction to 347 pounds feet there's also an electronically operated but still mechanical limited slip diff at the back and as before you get four wheel steering with only rear wheel drive inside though the new gt3 is a very different car sitting here it instantly feels like a completely serious sports car feels quite a lot more modern than the last gt3i saturn which was the 991 gen 2. the dials feel a lot more digital they're completely digital you've got this tiny little rotational button here that you can scroll up through normal sport and ding ding track when you put it in track i've set it up in another menu so that i'm going to put it in track i've got it absolutely how i want which is everything switched off right this is the pdk super you know the most sporting version you can get so it's got the lightweight seats it's got carbon ceramic brakes it's got the pdk gearbox pdk doesn't cost anything it's either a manual or a pdk but this is the quickest version that you can buy and i've already done some laps in it around anglesey and it is utterly fabulous there's one problem though it is completely chucking it down but [Music] you get what you're given in life this is how wet it is can you hear that can you hear that noise it is epic [Music] this engine this four liter flat six engine revs to 9000 rpm this is what that sounds like [Music] i mean you look at the outside of this car and you think oh my goodness me it's 130 grams worth gt porsche and it's chucking it down and it's got cut two tires on it and i've turned the traction control off but you just kind of get to grips with it and realize that it's not in fact trying to murder you this car it's trying actually to do everything it can to put you in exactly the right place on the track to go fast to have maximum fun you do need to know what you're doing the gt3's brakes are steel as standard with the carbon ceramics fitted to this car costing an extra six and a half grand but in either spec the braking power is immense for a road car as before only more so its brakes are one of the gt3's many defining high points the steering on this car is utterly sensational there is so much feel that comes through this room this beautiful suede colored rim right into the kind of little tingly bits on your fingertips and it's very precise as well but this it's just it's just the feel that comes through the steering the brakes the rear end your backside gets such a clear idea as to what the rear axles are to in this weather it's a bit different about the front because it doesn't want to wash what if you go into a corner too fast [Music] you're just going to lose the front end badly that's when it gets a bit a bit dangerous but like that that's kind of understeering so give it [Music] them [Music] so much traction [Music] and so much feel through the brake pedal [Music] and then there's that noise and this acceleration what a vehicle this is at 150 miles an hour the new gt3 also generates the not so small matter of 385 kilograms of downforce which is more even than the previous generation gt3 rs this alone gives it much more stability and grip through the quick corners while the diff tends to take care of business in the slower ones even in the soaking wet the thing is i've driven this car on the road as well and a few of my colleagues have accused this new 992 gt3 of being a bit too track focused for its own good it's a beautiful car on the road dial all this stuff back get the beeps put it back into normal like that and genuinely the ride is perfectly okay on the road the transmission the throttle map both just kind of takes several steps down it no longer feels like such a mad car and then you just go dink dink dial it back up again and my word lovely driving position as well [Music] it's very easy to get carried away in this thing very very easy [Music] blimey the gearbox is good in this car blimey this car is good i remember when i first drove the 991 generation one gt3 very briefly out in germany and it absolutely fried my head i thought it was so good because it was the first gt3 with a pdk gearbox this one this one's gone considerably further it's considerably faster it's considerably better and that's a pretty incredible realisation given how good the second generation 991 gt3 was then again maybe we should have expected nothing less from porsche's frankly brilliant gt department either way we'll be back at anglesey with a 992 gt3 to set a proper leaderboard lap in the fullness of time and with a set of nice fresh cut two tyres because it does feel like this car is ready to break some records [Music] you
