lord some praise today amen we bless the lord for our ministry of music and worship which has ushered us into the presence of god if you have your bibles i want to invite you to turn with me to the 18th chapter of the book of genesis we have been in a series an extended series entitled becoming a person of power and we've been examining the life of the patriarch abraham the patriarch of faith abraham and we've been looking at a series of moments in his life through the prism of becoming a person of power and right here in the 18th division of the book of genesis i want to read for you verses 20 through 33 where the word of the lord says then the lord says how great is the outcry against sodom and gomorrah and how very grave their sin i must go down and see whether they have done all together according to the outcry that has come to me and if not i will know so the men turned from there and went towards sodom while abraham remained standing before the lord he was praying somebody say he was praying amen then abraham came near and said will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked suppose that 50 righteous within the city are within the city will you sweep away the place and not forgive it for the 50 righteous who are in it far be it from you to do such a thing to slay the righteous with the wicked so that the righteous fair as the wicked far be it from you shall not the judge of all of the earth do what is just and the lord said if i find at sodom 50 righteous in the city i'll forgive the whole place for their sake and abraham answered well let me take it upon myself to speak to the lord i who am but dust and ashes suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking will you destroy the whole city for a lack of five and he said i will not destroy it if i find 45 there and again abraham said to him suppose forty are found there and the lord answered for the sake of forty i will not do it then abraham said oh do not let the lord be angry if i speak suppose lord there are 30 who are found there and he answered i will not do it even if i find thirty there and abraham said well let me take it upon myself to speak to the lord suppose twenty are found there and the lord answered for the sake of twenty i still will not destroy the city then abraham said oh do not let the lord be angry with me if i speak just once more suppose ten are found there and the lord answered for the sake of ten i will not destroy the city and the lord went his way and when he had finished speaking to abraham and abraham returned to his place i want to talk today church from the thought of prayer that moves god i want to talk today about a prayer that can literally move the heart of god gospel recording artist helen baylor had a hit song back in the early 90s that became popular because of the testimony she gave about navigating the challenges of addiction promiscuity and even thoughts of suicide in the song baylor says that despite all of the struggles she faced she was able to survive it because of one key factor and that factor was that she had a praying grandmother she is not alone in the conviction and in the awareness that we are who we are and we are where we are as the song says because somebody prayed for us they had us on their mind they took the time and prayed for us and i don't know what your testimony is but i'm so glad they prayed i am so glad they prayed for me prayer prayer is so powerful that things change not because sometimes not because of our own prayers but things will also change because of the effectual fervent and intercessory prayers of other people and in our text today we see not just the significance of abraham's promise but we also see the strength of abraham's prayer of the 650 prayers recorded in the word of god there can be no question that this prayer in the 18th chapter of genesis stands in a category all by itself it is a dialogue between a desperate man and a determined god concerning the fate of a family and a community that departed from god's will and god's way god revealed his plans to destroy the cities of sodom and gomorrah and abraham is concerned because his nephew lot and his family are living in that city rather than conceding his family's fate to the circumstance and the situation around him abraham prays looking for a way to save his family member the news of god's inter intentions arrest this 99 year old man and brings him to his knees before god it is a marvelous picture of what happens when believers go to god in prayer in prayer abraham makes an audacious appeal to god to save his nephew lot and his family and abraham models for us what happens when you walk with god in faith and when we live with god and his power how we can gain access to the throne room of heaven to ask whatever we will of the lord in prayer now a lot of times we talk about prayer we read about prayer but many of us are not praying the way that we need to pray and in this prayer abraham petitions god to agree to save the cities if there can be found some righteous individuals in the city who worship god first 50 then 45 then 40 and then abraham negotiates his way all the way down to 10. if god can find 10 righteous people in the city god will you agree to save the city and the bible says that god agrees that if he finds a remnant of 10 righteous individuals that he will save sodom and gomorrah god is so moved by abraham's prayer that it moves the heart of god and consequently we discover in this exchange how we too can pray prayers that can likewise move the heart of god first thing we discover church is that if you want to pray a prayer that can move god you must pray with a sense of burden somebody say burden from the outset we get a clear sense of abraham's burden for his family the prospect of losing the son of abraham's brother haren who died back in chapter 11 disturbs abraham so much so much so that it brought him to his proverbial needs before the god of heaven he didn't want to go forward to possess his promise he didn't want to go forward to become wealthy and prosperous if it meant leaving those that he loved behind and so what we see here is that what gets god's attention is the burden of a man who wants to save his family over the past 24 years of his journey with god the one thing that abraham has learned is that god is faithful and that god is a just god and so abraham appeals to that faithful and just god on the basis of what he knows about god's character he says to god in verse 23 will you indeed sweep away the righteous along with the wicked god's decision to destroy the city without regard for those who have been trying to do right and to live their lives was inconsistent with god's nature while god may allow good people to suffer due to tragedy disaster and natural calamity or even due to the diabolical deeds of others god will not himself destroy and punish those who are unworthy of such punishment and so that would be incompatible with god's character it is not with him the will of god that any man should perish and so abraham raises his hand and he lifts his voice to speak on behalf of those who could not speak for themselves he knew that everyone in sodom and gomorrah was not evil we'll talk more about sodom and gomorrah next time he knew that everyone in these two cities was not immoral and so he thought he sought the face and the favor of god on behalf of those who would be hurt in the process and apparently at work church abraham's act of intercession causes god to reflect and to re-evaluate his decision uh abraham's intercession moved at the heart of god god agrees per abraham's request that if there are 50 then 45 then 40 then 30 then 20 then 10 if there are 10 righteous people in the city god agrees according to abraham's a prayer not to destroy it abraham's intercession for for others was met with a concession from god his prayer moved both the hand and the heart of god and the point here church is not whether there were actually ten righteous people in the city i know someone is fast forwarding to the next chapter and you are saying well god ended up destroying the city but that's not the point at this point the point here is that god agrees to the term that uh aligned with abraham's prayer the point is that abraham prayed a prayer that moved the heart of god and that is why hebrews chapter 4 verse 15 says that we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses but was in all points tempted as we are and yet he was without sin can i tell you something when we pray with a sense of burden i want to tell you god knows and god understands that burden fervent prayer somebody say fervent prayer fervent prayer according to james 5 26 is what availeth much and when you have a burden for your need when you have a burden for your problem when you have a burden for your family members it will avail it much it is the sincerity of our prayer and the conviction of our prayer and the authenticity and the passion of our prayer that will move the throne room of heaven and a lot of times we get it wrong when it comes to prayer i'm reminded of something one of my pastor colleagues told me he told me that in a course he took on spiritual formation in seminary that the professor asked the class one day to write down and to recite a prayer that they read or heard growing up that they found particularly impactful and one of his classmates wrote down and recited this famous prayer by saint augustine where augustine prayed lead us oh god from the sight of the lovely things of the world to the thought of thee their creator and grant that delighting in the beautiful things of thy creation we might delight in thee the first author of beauty and the sovereign lord of all thy works blessed forevermore another colleague in the class wrote down and recited this prayer from john wesley where wesley said oh god seeing as there is in christ jesus an infinite fullness of all that we can want or desire may we all receive from him grace upon grace grace to pardon our sins subdue our iniquities to justify our persons and sanctify our souls and to complete that exchange their renewal of our hearts then there was yet another third classmate who wrote down and prayed and recited this prayer from thomas our kempus where thomas of our kempus wrote god our father we are exceedingly frair and indisposed to every virtuous and galilean undertaking strengthen our weakness we beseech you that we may be valiantly and the spiritual will help us against our own negligence and cowardice and defend us from the treachery of our unfaithful hearts but my friend who was from jackson mississippi said that he wrote down and recited this prayer from his grandmother where she said lord lord lord lord you know that was it my friend told this story to make the point that when it comes to prayer what makes prayer so powerful is not the length of our prayers how long we pray it is not the eloquence of our prayers the kind of words we use nor is it the volume of our prayers how loud we speak but it is in the conviction of our prayers that give our prayers is lord lord lord you know lord sometimes when you don't know what else to say all you've got to do is say lord and lord lord you know lord we talk about prayers that move us we say things like that was such a moving prayer that deacon prayed but at the end of the of the day we want to pray prayers that don't just move people in church we want to pray prayers that that move the god of heaven and the god of earth have i got to win this year abraham's burden moved god because he prayed he prayed with a burden but secondly i want you to notice that in this text abraham prayed with boldness somebody say boldness yeah yeah abraham prayed with a burden but he also prayed with boldness now those of you who are parents know how it feels when when uh someone is constantly bartering and negotiating with you about a decision you've already made yeah when when your children come begging and saying daddy can i can i get a candy bar and can i get some ice cream and can i get a car and can i get this and can i get that and can i go to a move to the movies and and when you have given your answer and then they keep asking you you might say something like look i said what i said and that's it well like a child begging his parents for something abraham goes to god pleading with god to reconsider the terms of his decision his reverence for god doesn't prevent him from approaching god with boldness verse verse 23 tells us that when the angels left abraham remained at their standing before the lord and when he did so the bible says that when he prayed that he came closer it's a subtle observation but i think it's significant none the that's a bold move on abraham's part to literally confront the god of heaven over a decision that he has made to destroy a community and the bible says that abraham comes closer he shows us that if our prayers are going to shift heaven that if our prayers are going to move god then we've got to come to god with boldness i discovered that when you've got a burden on the line when you've got a deadline up before you you don't have time to be timid with god uh you got to come to god like you deserve to be in the presence of god have i got a witness here perhaps that's what the writer was thinking when he wrote in hebrews 4 let us come before him boldly into the throne of grace anyone can pray because anyone can talk to god but not just anyone can move god until you come to god with boldness can the church say boldness it it takes courage and confidence to stand before god without wavering uh saying and declaring what you mean and declaring to god what you want and what you desire communication specialists say that the primary breakdown in communication happens when the speaker is unclear and uncertain of what they are saying that when the speaker is before an audience and when the speaker is uncertain about the audience and is uncertain about their message then that's when communication breaks down boldness in prayer is having the certitude about what you are saying and who it is you are talking to that's what jacob did when he came to god one night picking a fight with god and he held on to god and he declared lord i'm not gonna let you go until you change my situation that's what the syrophoenician woman who had a sick daughter did when she refused to be rejected when jesus said to her that he could not give the children bread to a dog she replied i don't need the bread you can give me the crumbs boldness is the father whose son had a demon that the father said jesus says disciples could not cast out and instead of giving up he started talking to jesus and jesus asked him if he believed and he said lord i believe but to be honest i need you to help me with my unbelief got a witness here a boldness is the roman centurion who asked jesus to heal his servant and he said jesus i'm unworthy to be standing up for you to be standing under my roof but if you can just speak a word my servant shall be healed boldness is the woman with an issue of blood who came to jesus despite the regulations of the temple they said she should have stayed home when you pray you gotta come to god with boldness like abraham you gotta play believe pray believing our risks will be rewarded knowing that what we are asking is possible and trusting that god is able can i ask you something do you believe that god is able to meet your needs do you believe that god is a cable to give you what you desire now some people interpret boldness as being arrogant but boldness here is more than that i recently read an article entitled the art of speaking boldly and winning your audience where the writer of the article said that the key to a bold speech is not just knowing what you're saying but knowing who you're talking to see there are some things that my children can say to me that other people can't say to me and the reason they can talk to me that way it's cause i'm their daddy i'm trying to help somebody here today see when you are praying you are talking to your heavenly father the audience of our prayers is god your daddy and when you know that you can speak boldly but you can also pray bold prayers by reminding god of his word that's what enables us to speak boldly and to pray boldly before the lord it's when you pray god's word in this text this back and forth between abraham and god is based upon abram's understanding of god's character abraham asked god to save the city and he find if he finds 50 all the way down to 10 righteous people based upon abraham's understanding of god's character he exalts god by magnifying his character what abraham is doing church is is that he is going to god standing on the character of god and i need you to keep in mind that this is before the bible has been canonized and now that we have the bible we understand that god's character is mediated through the word i need y'all to hold on here so what abraham is modeling for us is is that effective effective prayer is the result of our ability to pray the word i got listening to me that's the model you gotta you gotta pray the word when you pray don't pray your opinion you gotta pray the word have i gotta when you get down on your knees i want you to start trying to pray the word you got to say lord your word says you don't have to be you don't have to be shy about it you just say lord your word says i shall be healed lord your word says that i've never seen the righteous forsaken nor their seed begging for bread your word says that no weapon formed against me shall prosper have i got a witness here you have got to learn how to stand on the authority of god's word and when you stand on the word of god that enables you to get into the presence of god and to pray boldly come on look at your neighbor and say pray the word pray the word come on type in the comment section pray the word i remember i remember one year one year i told ava and leah that they could get whatever they wanted for christmas they were really young that year and so i i figured that they would just ask for a doll or tricycle or or something like that they were little they were real small then and so i said uh for christmas you can get whatever you want well when why did i do when christmas came when christmas came they came asking for something that cost more than i had anticipated i'm the father i need y'all to get this here when christmas came they came asking for something that cost more than what i had budgeted for and when i tried to turn them down they kept responding by saying daddy you said we could have whatever we wanted they kept saying daddy you said what were they doing they were holding me accountable to my word and i want to tell you that when you pray the word of god you are reminding god of his word daddy when you you said i shall be healed you said i shall be provided you say i shall be protected come on slap high five with your neighbor and type in the comment section pray the word when you say when you pray the word you are reminding god of his character now don't misinterpret this abraham's boldness is not the same as brazenness this is not arrogance and conceit because while abraham has a desire he is not demanding or telling god what to do i need y'all to get that's not the same praying boldly is not the same as praying brazenly haven't got a witness here yes he's bold but i see in the text indications that he's also praying with humility yeah he says god will you save the city at this p 50 then 45 and 30 then 20 then 10. he's got this strong conviction but he is not telling god what to do i know you're wondering where does it say that preacher well if you look at verses 27 verses 30 and 32 we see the patriarch begging god for indulgence and asking god to be patient with him and don't be angry i want to tell you that's humility yes be bold but act like you got some sense because none of us can go to god and tell god what to do have i got a witness here these are prayers that honor god but you got to make sure that you punctuate your prayer with an air of humility [Music] we can't tell god what to do we cannot demand that god give us our desires we are to make our requests known to god but then you got to realize that your prayers whether they'll be answered is totally up to god that is why we sing take your burdens to the lord and leave them there have i got a witness yeah i like the refrain leave it there leave it there take your burdens to the lord and leave it right yes i know you're sick yes i know you need a relation yes i know i know you need a new car yes i know you're looking for a new man but after you take your burdens to the lord the bible says leave it right there somebody type in the comment section leave it there see if you're going to put it on the altar you got to leave it at the altar you didn't take it at you're taking it to three of your friends you are carrying around a burden rather than leaving it before the altar of god abraham shows us that when you pray with a burden and when you pray with boldness and when you pray with humility you finally have got to make sure you pray with persistence i know i'm giving you a lot here you got to pray with a burden you got to pray with boldness you have to pray with humility but the last thing that i want to tell you is that if you want to shift heaven if if you want to move god you got to pray with persistence i like the fact that this brother is so determined to make his case to god that he continued appealing to god for mercy he he continued to pray but he didn't just stop asking one time yeah he prays but he keeps on praying haven't got to win he prays and he keeps on asking until he gets what he came for i'm trying to help someone here because someone's listening and you're saying preacher i've been praying but i'm wondering how long do i pray i've been asking god but i'm wondering how long do i ask i want to tell you you got to pray and keep on praying until you get what you came for see what many of us miss is that oftentimes when the bible references prayer it is grammatically in the present indicative sense and that means that when you pray you don't just pray one time in stop the present indicative is a continual action have i got a witness here if you want to shift heaven on your behalf you got to pray with persistence see when jesus said in matthew 7 7 ask and it shall be given to you seek and you shall find knock and it shall be open to you he wasn't just saying mention it one time and then go on about your business it's in the present indicative sense it means to ask and to keep on asking it means to knock and to keep on knocking it means to seek and keep on seeking it is just like that man in luke chapter 11 who has nothing to feed his guests and so he goes to his friend's house and knocks on the door and ask him for some bread and the bible says that the friend says he is asleep and the door is locked and his children have already gone to bed and he doesn't want to get up but he gets up and gives the man some bread because he keeps knocking at the door i'm gonna get out of your way but i stopped by to tell somebody you gotta pray and keep on praying you gotta knock and keep on knocking until something is gonna shift you gotta pray until heaven answers you gotta pray until mountains move you gotta pray until doors open you gotta pray until your change comes have i got a witness here when abraham had done all that he could do the bible says in verse 33 that he goes on home it's as if he's done everything that he could do he prayed boldly he prayed with a burden he prayed with humility and he prayed with persistence and at the end of the day he put it all in god's hands and i stopped by to tell somebody that after you pray and put it on the altar you got to leave it there have i got a witness that's what charles tindley said he said take your burdens to the lord and leave it there have i got a witness you got to trust and never doubt that you'll surely bring you out leave it there you worried too long you've agonized long enough you got to take it to the lord and leave it there and then stand back and watch heaven move watch mountains move and the window of heaven will open up on your behalf have i got a witness is there anybody here who can thank god that i got down on my knees and say father i stretch my hands to be no other help i know come on put your hands together and give the lord some praise we can pray prayers that move god listen i mean we may not be able to pray prayers that move other people you may not be able to pray prayers that can move a crowd but the question is whether you pray prayers that will move god and to do that you've got to have a burden you've got to pray boldly that that means praying prayers that align with the word of god and then while it's okay to have a desire you don't demand when you pray remain maintain your humility and pray with persistence and then go on back home and leave your petition before the lord come on put your hands together bless god today [Music] listen i want to invite someone listening to me right now listen if you don't have a church home if you were blessed by this worship experience if you were
