[Music] foreign [Music] at this time I'd like to invite up Kevin and Melissa Bohr and Pastor Jeff Whitaker well good morning and it is a wonderful opportunity to welcome Kevin and Melissa bore many of you know them we have partnered with the boers as they minister with AMF first in Ecuador and then in Africa and Lesotho and now as you're in Idaho and it's just a delight to have you here let I don't want to forget to say they will be back this evening we will be in this in the chapel because this room apparently is being transformed into a castle so we need to meet in the chapel this evening but welcome you all back so that we can get a more full report from the boars and what God is doing but let me just ask I always want to ask because we have people sitting here who we God is moving us all into full involvement in the Great Commission those who stay and those who go and I would like to know how it is that God worked in your hearts that convinced you that you needed to give your life in the way that you've served him hi the Lord really placed upon my heart missions even from a young age and I just was so excited to hear the stories from other missionaries just like you're giving us an opportunity to share here a lot of times my parents would host those missionaries in our home in through prayer and just further studies at Moody Bible Institute and when I met this man love of my life that was solidified that yes that was the direction I needed to go and I wanted to go and share God's love with other people in other places yeah I would say for me it was it wasn't a one-time thing it was probably more of a process I would say um our church also supported other MAF missionaries so I got to learn about how Mission Aviation could could make an impact around the world for Missions and I had a real interest in aviation from a pretty young age and so I was excited to see how I could use something that God had given me a passion for also to serve him but yeah I would say it was a process and God oh had had to open a lot of doors along the way but yeah we're excited to be a part of it and your Ministries have changed through the years can you describe to us what you're doing now so yeah I'm actually not actively flying right now as a pilot right now my role at MF is the international director of safety uh so I get to be a part more not just in one country but more on a global level where I may ask working around the world helping to oversee our safety program uh obviously Aviation is uh is not without risk and so we want to do it very well uh to the glory of God and so maintaining us an important safety culture within the organization is really important part of that and so I get to do a lot of travel to all the various locations MAF sirs do safety audits uh and enter we've got a team a safety team really that I get to help lead it's safety can't be just done by one person but I get to partner with a lot of our our staff overseas and how can we be praying for you and for the family these days well yeah I would say our family is uh is going through a lot of different uh changes right now uh our kids have uh we have two kids in college and and one left at home with us right now um so uh you know we've got a lot of transition going on in our family um as far as our ministry is concerned uh I would just ask for prayer for uh wisdom and that guy would open my eyes our eyes to see what needs to be seen the world continues to as you obviously can see on the news is not without uh risk and a lot of change going on around the world in a lot of the places MAF Works uh have are I'd say instability is becoming greater issues so yeah just wisdom to know uh just to see the things that we need to see and moza and I would just add could you please pray for our daughter Annie she's back home in Idaho and there she's going to be helping out with the VBS through our church that we're part of Gospel Life Bible church just like you guys are starting here so that the gospel would be shared in people's lives would be changed through that well let me pray for you all just before uh Pastor Brett comes up father we do thank you for the privilege we have had through the years to partner with Kevin and Melissa and see the kids grow and uh Lord we are grateful for that and we want to present them to you now commit them to you again we do ask that you would grant them great wisdom I think especially with Kevin and his leading of the safety Audits and the safety culture as he called it in the organization Lord just this last week we saw a plane go down there was a private plane and apparently um had not been well cared for and were reminded that this is um this is a reality anytime people get way up off the ground in a machine so pray for the work of Kevin and his team those on each of the locations where they work Lord we pray that there will be great wisdom and caretaken with the lives that are entrusted to them in the Ministries they have of connecting churches around the world in church plants around the world with the communities near them and the resources near them father we also pray for them as a family and we thank you for this season when their kids are growing up and headed in different directions and we want to commit each one of them to you especially their daughter right now as she's involved in Ministry in their Community back home and I I know that that Melissa has a number of roles herself there in the community and we ask father that just as we support them to be making disciples around the world we would also be seeing disciples raised up in Idaho through their lives and we thank you for this couple and we ask your great blessing on them in Jesus name amen well it is a joy to hear from our Global Partners and to rejoice in what the Lord is doing in and through them and I think the congregation for your dedication to our Global Ministries this is a core to who we are and what we do and appreciate all who make this a regular part of both your prayer and of your financial giving and of of your hearts so we praise the Lord for that well we're continuing our study of the book of Isaiah we're in the fifth major section of the book which as I've mentioned contains both woes and wonders both judgment and joys and if you remember from our previous messages on this section it is organized around the pronouncement of six woes against six different categories of sin in chapter 28 we see a woe to the drunkards in chapter 29 woe to those who are spiritually apathetic chapter 29 verse 15 woe to those who live a double life Chapter 30 verse 1 woe to rebellious children who won't listen chapter 31 woe to those who trust in human powers in chapter 33 will be woe to the tyrannical rulers so two weeks ago we discussed the first woe which is woe to the drunkards chapter 28 verse 1 says woe to the proud crown of the drunkards and then last week we studied the second and third woes woe to spiritual apathy in chapter 29 if you remember chapter 29 verse 1 says woe o Ariel the city where David once camped and then verse 13 explains why this woe is coming on Jerusalem says because this people draw near with their words and honor me with their lip service but they remove their hearts far from me and they're reverent for me consists of tradition learned by rote so woe to the spiritual apathetic woe to spiritual apathy and then the Third Woe which we also covered last week is woe to those who live a double life in chapter 29 verses 15 and 16 it says woe to those who deeply hide their plans from the Lord and whose Deeds are done in a dark place and they say who sees us or who knows us you turn things around shall the Potter be considered as equal with the clay that what is made would say to its maker he did not make me or what his form say to him who formed it he has no understanding woe to those who live a double life and that's where we ended last time and at the end if you remember we mentioned briefly that the good news is that chapter 29 ends in verses 17 through 24 with a prophecy of Hope of Messianic hope instead of whoa you can receive Wonder instead of judgment you can receive joy and that's the theme of the end of chapter 29. so before we move on to chapter 30 which is going to be our Focus this morning I want to begin by drawing your attention just to a couple things from that joyous hope giving section at the end of chapter 29 look at chapter 29 verses 18 through 19. and this is a Messianic prophecy it says on that day the death will hear the words of a book and out of their Gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind will see The Afflicted also will increase their gladness in the Lord and the needy of mankind will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel this is a Messianic prophecy and in Matthew chapter 11 when John the Baptist was in prison he began having doubts whether Jesus was the long promised Messiah or not and so he sent Messengers to ask Jesus and in Matthew chapter 11 verse 3 The Messengers bring his question to Jesus they say John's question is this are you the expected one or shall we look for someone else this by the way is the key question for the Jewish people is Jesus the expected one or shall we look for someone else and many have said we should look for someone else and they're still looking but Jesus replies to this question from John the Baptist by citing the Messianic prophecies from the Old Testament particularly Isaiah chapter 29 verse 18. Matthew 11 verse 4 says this Jesus answered and said to them go and report to John what you hear and see the blind received sight and the lame walk the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them this is a citation of Isaiah 29 Verse 18 as well as about two or three other texts Messianic texts from the Old Testament he says John stop doubting just go and report back to John he says these messages what you are seeing and hearing the blind see the deaf here and The Afflicted of the Gospel preached to them Jesus is the Messiah and he proved it by healing the blind the deaf and the lame in fulfillment of prophecies made in this case 700 years earlier the point for us though is that if he can do that then he can certainly keep all of his promises to us and so the Fulfillment of Prophecy reminds us that we serve a faithful God who will keep all of his promises last thing I want you to notice from chapter 29 is in verses 22-24 it says therefore thus says the Lord who redeemed Abraham concerning the house of Jacob Jacob shall not now be ashamed nor shall his face now turn pale but when he sees his children the work of my hands in his midst they will sanctify my name indeed they will sanctify the Holy One of Jacob and will stand in awe of the god of Israel those who err in mind will know the truth and those who criticize will accept instruction by reminding the readers that God redeemed Abraham I was struck when I was reading this by that phrase in verse 22 therefore thus says the Lord who redeemed Abraham concerning the house of Jacob and I thought to myself that phrase that Lord who redeemed Abraham it's almost it's not necessary right I mean he could have just said this is what the Lord says to the house of Jacob you're not going to be ashamed you're going to sanctify my name you're going to stand in awe and those who are in air will be corrected why when he's talking about the Redemption and restoration of his people does he mention his Redemption of Abraham in the past the Lord here is reminding the people that he redeemed Abraham and so then he is encouraging them to believe that he will be faithful to the Covenant he made with Abraham and therefore with Isaac and Jacob and their Descendants the children of Israel and so I think verse 22 just is one example of literally hundreds throughout the scripture it's a reminder of a very helpful and practical principle which we can apply to our own lives I've put it on the screen for you remembering what God has done for others in the past strengthens us to face the trials of the present and the uncertainty of the future I repeat that for you remembering what God has done for others in the past strengthens us to face the trials of the present and the uncertainty of the future therefore thus says the Lord who redeemed Abraham he's telling them remember how God redeemed Abraham remember God's covenant with Abraham and now based on that you can have confidence that this future promise about the restoration of the sons of Jacob will take place remembering what God has done for others in the past strengthens us to face the trials of the present and the uncertainty of the future if God redeemed Abraham then he will be faithful to me too if God could help Joseph for example endure all of the abuse and mistreatment that he received at the hands of his brothers and then the jailers and the Egyptians if God could help Joseph overcome the abuse he endured then he can help me overcome the abuse I've endured maybe to bring it a little more into the closer past if God could give someone like Johnny Erickson tada a joyful spirit and a fruitful Ministry after the accident which paralyzed her from the neck down then he can do the same for me as I face difficult health challenges we remember what God has done for others in the past and that strengthens us to face our trials in the present and to cling to God's promises for the future if God is has been faithful to his promise to redeem and regather the sons of Jacob so that they will sanctify his name stand in awe of him and learn from him then he will be faithful to do the same for me too he who redeemed Abraham will keep his promise to redeem regather and restore Israel and that means he will be faithful to the promises he has made to us as well because when he makes a promise he keeps it so that is really the context then that brings us into chapter 30. and Chapter 30 is going to talk about rebellious children but remember just before he talks about God's people being rebellious children God has already said I am going to do a work in them and they will be Sanctified they will stand in awe those who err in mind will know the truth and those who are critical of God in his ways will finally respond to instruction and so the hope at the end of chapter 29 brings us into this discussion of the rebellious children of Israel in Chapter 30 and so there's a note of Hope even before this discussion of rebellion rebellious children but Chapter 30 contains the fourth warning against the woes of sin but it's preceding context in chapter 29 as well as How It Ends in Chapter 30 gives us hope in fact Chapter 30 contains some of the most precious and beautiful Revelations of God's love of his compassion and of his grace in the entire Bible and so while it begins with a warning of Woe it ends with the hope of God's grace so let's look at this fourth woe woe to rebellious children who will not listen look at Chapter 30 verse 1. whoa to the rebellious children declares the Lord who execute a plan but not mine and make an alliance but not of my spirit in order to add sin to sin then skip down to verses 8 through 11. the Lord is giving instruction to Isaiah now go write it on a tablet before them and inscribe it on a scroll that it may serve in the time to come as a witness forever for this is a rebellious people false Sons sons who refuse to listen to the instruction of the Lord who say to the seers you must not see visions and to the prophets you must not prophesy to us what is right speak to us pleasant words prophesy Illusions get out of the way turn aside from the path let us hear no more about the Holy One of Israel these are rebellious children who will not listen and this passage declares woe upon rebellious children who will not listen in my growing up years our family took in several troubled teens into our home several teens and some young adults as well parents who were at their wit's end with rebellious children would ask my parents for help and so for a few weeks or maybe a few months we would have a guest living in our basement and we as children were not allowed to go down to their area and spend time with them without our parents being present and they weren't allowed to come upstairs without permission but other than that they became part of our family life meals and even vacations some of these troubled teens responded repented were restored began following the Lord got their lives in order went back to their families and had a wonderful outcome others did not remember a real poignant experience as a kid I was probably six or seven and one time I caught one of these uh Teenage guests smoking in my dad's church office and uh that was quite a shock to me I'd you know never seen anyone smoke and you know a church office before frankly I kind of think about I think that's the only time I've ever seen anyone smoke in a church office he was unfortunately unwilling to abide by the rules he had agreed to when he came to live with us and his time with us was short another poignant memory I have though was sitting in the car an extra teenage girl who went with us to visit our relatives so went with us on vacation out of state and her going with us on this trip was part of her parents attempt to get her away from her abusive druggy boyfriend and I remember as a little kid sitting next to her you know squeezed into our station wagon and watching her write his name on her leg in hearts and I remember being so baffled because my parents had told me you know that she's coming with us because her parents want to get her away from this abusive drug addicted boyfriend she had and here she is writing in a with a pen his name in hearts and I just remember being so baffled why she would want to go back to a guy who was ruining her life that girl's mom was like an aunt to us we were very close as families her dad was a beloved Elder in our church he was a wise and gentle godly man of Prayer and he eventually chose to step down from the Elder board because his daughter became so rebellious their other children they had a couple other children one of those other children became a missionary the other does inner city Ministry with her husband and those other two kids were my role models growing up they were the spiritual role models that we could follow but one of the three chose a completely opposite path so early on I learned a lesson and that's this being a good and godly parent doesn't guarantee you'll have good and godly kids and it also means that if someone has a rebellious child it doesn't mean they've been a bad parent I want to make sure that those of you who have a heartbreak with your children hear that being a good and godly parent does not guarantee you'll have good and godly kids because they have their own soul and make their own choices and if someone has had a rebellious child it doesn't mean they've been a bad parent and so it's important not to make any assumptions this particular girl during the time that she spent with us just continued on in a destructive path and even as a little kid I had somewhat of a front row seat to the Heartbreak and the anguish that her Rebellion caused her parents and her siblings and herself I saw the foolishness of the self-destructive and miserable path that she was on and sadly that path continued for many many years but gloriously and by the grace of God later on in life she came to Christ and had some great restoration but I am grateful that God early on in life gave me the opportunity to observe the destructive consequences of rebellion I saw firsthand what it does to people and so later on in my own teenage years I never seriously considered Rebellion because I'd already seen where that road leads I'd already seen how Wicked it is how foolish it is how destructive it is and how much misery and heartbreak it causes to yourself and to everyone that you love and so my parents who often would run to the herding instead of away from them and to the troubled instead of away from them I think very much protected us against making some of those Errors By allowing us to see their end is that the ifca convention the week before last and Richard Vargas the ifca director gave a wonderful message and he said brothers and sisters we are firemen we don't run from the fire we run to the fire to rescue Souls now of course we need to be well equipped and well trained for to to do these things but that should be our mentality we want to run two The Lost and the straying not away from them and I'm grateful my parents taught me that as early on I've always said the best defense is a good offense teach your kids to be Evangelistic teach them to reach out to kids from broken homes because as they reach out to kids from broken homes they will see what sin does to a person in in their family and that will protect them from straying themselves Rebellion has terrible consequences and I saw it firsthand in fact the Rebellion is so wicked according to scripture that the Bible says that Rebellion is just as bad as practicing witchcraft I want to read you a verse from first Samuel chapter 15 verse 23 quote Rebellion is like witchcraft an insubordination is like wickedness and idolatry that's how seriously God takes Rebellion and the reason that Rebellion is akin to Witchcraft is because a rebellious person is literally mimicking and following the attitudes and actions of Satan who rebelled against God when teens and young adults and and even older adults Rebel they are following the first Rebel Satan himself so the scripture takes Rebellion very seriously and with that in mind I want to look more closely than at what Isaiah chapter 30 has to say to the rebellious sons of Israel at the time of Isaiah and will draw from what said to them some lessons for our own times and context here's how I've outlined chapter 30. verses 1 through 14 are the indictment against the rebellion of the people and they're replacing god with other sources of trust then the first part of verse 15 is the invitation from God to repentance and rest the last phrase in verse 15 through verse 17 is the consequences of their rejection and refusal to accept God's invitation which is the coming invasion and then in verses 18 through 33 we see God's glorious and compassionate intention for the people of Israel in the future and it is his intention his Divine will for them which will be accomplished is for their Redemption their regathering and their restoration so you have the indictment the invitation The Invasion and the intention so let's begin by looking at God's indictment of his rebellious people in verses 1 through 14. in verses one through two it says this woe to the rebellious children declares the Lord who execute a plan but not mine and make an alliance but not of my spirit in order to add sin to sin who proceed down to Egypt without consulting me to take refuge in the safety of pharaoh and to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt this is astounding you all know because you learned it in school about the dark Pagan religion of ancient Egypt they were literally worshiping demons these were the people who had enslaved Israel these were the people who had oppressed them and now instead of turning to God for help they're going to turn to pharaoh this is rebellion and it is replacement God indicts the children of Israel for two major sins Rebellion against him and then replacing him with pharaoh for protection and for putting their trust in him instead of obeying God they rebelled against him and when the consequences of their sin Came Crashing Down on them in the form of invading armies they replaced God they substituted God for Pharaoh by turning to Egypt for help and protection instead of turning to him so the indictment is against their rebellion and their replacement of God with Earthly powers so as we kind of go through verses 1 through 14 this pastor is going to tell us a lot about rebellion and its consequences we're going to go real rapidly through this I'm just going to list them for you and I'm going to put them up on the screen but it's going to tell us a number of truths about rebellion and its consequences first of all rebellious children reject God's plan rebellious children reject God's plan he says in verse 1 their rebellious children who execute a plan but not mine they reject God's plan and substitute it for their own God has a plan for your life he has a moral will he has a direction the scripture says this is God's will for you your sanctification your holiness that's what God's plan for you is but oftentimes people execute a different plan for their lives one that's not the Lord's secondly rebellious children choose the wrong friends the next phrase in verse 1 says they make an alliance but not of my spirit rebellious children choose the wrong Friends of the wrong allies next rebellious children add sin to sin they add sin to sin they do something wrong and then they try to cover it up with lies or deceptions and or they sin and they feel guilty about their sins so then they turn to drugs or alcohol to try to squelch the guilt of their sin they just are continually adding sin to sin and sin is sucking them down like quicksand next we see that rebellious children trust in Earthly Powers look at verse two they proceed down to Egypt without consulting me to take refuge in the safety of pharaoh to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt I mean keep in mind the context pharaoh and the Egyptians right the king the kings of Egypt and the Egyptians themselves are the ones who had Enslaved the people of Israel now they're going to go to they're enslavers for help they're gonna seek refuge in their enslavers they trust in Earthly powers and that leads only to shame rebellious children are filled with shame verses three through five therefore the safety of pharaoh will be your shame and the shelter and the shout of Egypt your humiliation for their princes are at Zohan and their ambassadors arrive at Haines everyone will be ashamed because of a people who cannot profit them who are not for help or profit but for shame and also for reproach rebellious children turn to Earthly powers for comfort for for a sense of belonging and they attach themselves to some Wicked group and they think that this group will help them and protect them or give them a sense of belonging or popularity or whatever it is that they're seeking for but instead it brings them only shame and reproach rebellious children are filled with shame next rebelly's children face A Hard Road verses 6 through 7 the Oracle concerning the Beast of the Negev so he's saying look you want to go to Egypt here's what that road is going to bring to you through a land of distress and anguish from where come lioness and lion Viper and flying serpent they carry their riches on the backs of young donkeys and their Treasures on camel humps to a people who cannot profit them even Egypt whose help is vain and empty therefore I have called her a Rahab who has been exterminated this is the people of Israel putting loads of wealth on donkeys and camels and traveling through the Negev through the desert to Egypt to try to buy Egypt's military protection he says you know what this road that you have chosen is a hard one welcome to the desert you'll take your treasure through the desert and in the end you're taking it to someone who cannot help you Egypt's help God says is vain and empty you're going to travel this hard Road you're going to spend all of your treasure and you're going to get nothing in return emptiness and vanity this is very descriptive I think of the path that many young people go down when they turn to drugs and alcohol and other things they they spend their treasure their money they they travel this hard road and in the end they find nothing but vanity and emptiness rebellious children face A Hard Road next verses 8 through 9 rebellious children refuse to listen God tells Isaiah go write it on a tablet before them and inscribe it on a scroll that it may serve in the time to come as a witness forever in other words there's going to come a time where they're going to realize they made a massive mistake so Isaiah write down the warning I'm giving to them now so that when Egypt fails them they'll know that I predicted it in advance they refuse to listen verse 9. this for this is a rebellious people false Sons Sons who refuse to listen to the instruction of the Lord one of the characteristics of rebellion is simply a refusal to listen they stop listening they think they've stopped listening to their parents they think they've stopped listening to the other adults in their lives but really they've stopped listening to God himself because God uses parents and uses the spiritual leaders and other authority figures to bring his instruction to young hearts and so when they stop listening to their parents to their pastors to their other authority figures in their life they really have stopped listening to God next we see that rebellious children don't want to hear sound Doctrine verse 10. they say to the seers you must not see visions and to the prophets you must not prophesy to us what is right is this applicable to our day or what our whole society is saying to God's Messengers stop telling us what is right and we're already seeing I mean I whether they will succeed or not I don't know but they are going to try to impose legal constraints on what can be said by the Messengers of God stop telling us what is right tell us what we want to hear and this is the next one rebellious children gravitate to false teachers there is never a shortage of people willing to tell other people what they want to hear verse 10 the next phrase says speak to us pleasant words prophesy illusions this is what's going on in our society right now in thousands of places that still call themselves churches but have long ago departed from any faithfulness to the Lord or to scripture in thousands of so-called pulpits in America today they're are so-called teachers pastors priests whatever they call themselves reverends and what are they doing this morning they are speaking pleasant words and they are prophesying illusions but people love it that's what they want rebellious children gravitate to false teachers next rebellious children cut off those who try to restrain them verse 11. they say to the true and faithful messengers of the Lord get out of the way turn aside from the path let us hear no more about the Holy One of Israel stop talking to us about God in his holiness get out of our way next rebellious children rejects the word of God verse 12. therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel by the way notice verse 11 they say get out of the way stop talking to us about the Holy One of Israel and do you know what the immediate response is thus says the Holy One of Israel this is pretty instructive for us right when they say to us stop talking to us about what's right stop talking to us about the Holy One of Israel we respond simply by thus says the Holy One of Israel I don't want to hear about the Holy One of Israel here's what the Holy One of Israel says therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel since you have rejected this word and have put your trust and oppression in guile and have relied on them this iniquity will be to you like a breach about to fall a bulge in a high wall whose collapse comes suddenly in an instant rebellious children reject the word of God since you have rejected this word they simply reject the word of God next rebellious children hurt others and themselves he says you've rejected this word and he says and then you've put your trust in oppression you've put your trust in oppression Rebellion always leads to evil actions against other people oppression you know rebellious teens oppress their families they truly oppress their families and they hurt them and they hurt themselves next it says that they've put their their trust not only in oppression but in guile in guile rebellious children are cunning and habitual Liars there filled with guile they know how to manipulate they know how to deceive they know how to trick they know how to maneuver but this oppression in guile leads to a sudden fall look at verses 13 and 14. therefore this iniquity will be to you like a breach about to fall a bulge in a high wall whose collapse comes suddenly in an instant whose collapse is like the Smashing of a Potter's jar so ruthlessly shattered that A Shard will not be found amongst its pieces to take fire from a hearth or to scoop water from a cistern you know if they were to you know drop a pot or something it would break into pieces you know the materials were so important they wouldn't just throw it all away they would take the larger pieces and use it then as a tool to scoop ashes or to scoop water he says you know what your life is going to be like a pot that shatters so completely there's not even a piece left over that's useful for anything rebellious children will fall and they will fall suddenly so this passage pointly describes rebellion and we need to remember in context it's talking about the rebellion of the children of Israel against God in the time of Isaiah but this should be a warning to all of us and especially to our children and our teens so to young people I just want to warn you that Rebellion against your parents against the church against God against Authority has terrible consequences and many have told themselves they can do all these wicked things and not face the consequences but the scripture says be sure your sin will find you out and the scripture also says don't be deceived God cannot be mocked whatever you sow you will reap whatever you plant in your life will produce a harvest and that will be either for good or for ill Satan tries to convince young people and he's going to try to get you to convince yourself that what you're doing isn't Rebellion it's just following your heart just standing up for yourself it's just breaking free from these old-fashioned and ridiculous rules it's just being an adult but what is really happening is you are being lured down a dark evil and destructive path by the first Rebel by Satan himself so turn back repent and turn back turn back to God turn back to your parents turn back to your morals before your life is dashed into pieces like shattered pottery that was the indictment for rebellion and replacement but by the way the appeal that I just gave to you to turn back is not just me appealing to you it's actually God who appeals look at the next section which is the invitation that God gives towards repentance and Trust repentance and rest look at verse 15. for thus the Lord God the Holy One of Israel has said in Repentance and rest you will be saved in quietness and trust is your strength this is God's appeal to the rebellious heart repent and find your Soul's Rest in Me instead of the loud talking back and all of the vitriol that you've been spewing to people learn quietness and Trust this is God's invitation to you to repentance and rest in Repentance and rest you will be saved in quietness and trust is your strength a Hebrew scholar Arnold frutenbaum explains the terms used here writing quote the Hebrew term for repentance yeshuva refers to a return in the sense of conversion and the Hebrew term for rest and the shot refers to arrest in the sense of a cessation of attempting to receive salvation through human effort you need to repent and you need to rest in what God has done for you you know one of the barriers to people who are in rebellion of of coming back is sometimes they think they've gone too far and that God won't take them back but God says repent and and rest in the finished work of Christ God's grace is greater than your sin Christ's death on the cross his atonement is sufficient to pay for everything that you've done so repent and then rest in the grace of God turn from your Rebellion put your faith in God quietly rest in him find your Soul's peace in the grace and love of God and notice that the Lord says that if you will just repent and rest in him you'll find Salvation and you will find strength to face the road to come Rebellion is a hard road which leads to an even harder Destiny so God's invitation is to repent and rest that was all the people of Israel needed to do but the last phrase of verse 15 records the tragic reality of their response to God's invitation the end of verse 15 it says but you were not willing in Repentance and rest you'll be saved in quietness and trust is your strength but you were not willing I hope that won't be the case for you the next several verses prophetically declare the consequences that the people of Israel were going to face because of their rejection of God's invitation not only had they rebelled but then they rejected God's invitation to repentance and so they were going to face invasion they were going to face Invasion because of their rejection of the Lord and their refusal to heed his appeal verses 15 through 17. you were not willing and you said no for we will flee on horses therefore you shall flee we will ride on Swift horses therefore those who pursue you shall be Swift one thousand will flee at the threat of one man until and you will flee at the threat of five until you are left as a flag on a Mountaintop and has a signal on a hill you know can't you even hear it's like you know the rebellious heart it has certain Echoes and refrains that were true of the sons of Israel back in Isaiah's day and are still true of the rebellious teenager today an appeal is made to them and their response is I'm not willing and then when there's like well you've got to keep these rules then I'll run away then I will run away I will leave I will flee I'll run you know on you know the fast horses under the hood of my car or whatever they reject they refuse and the result is going to be tragic but I want you to notice though that no matter how deep into sin and wickness a rebellious person is gone the only thing standing in the way of their restoration is their will he says in Repentance and rest is your salvation he says but you were not willing see that's the issue is the will they're just stubborn God extends them the invitation to repent to find rest for their souls in his grace but they are simply not willing their pride makes them unwilling to admit that they've been wrong or done wrong and so they stubbornly continue down the path of rebellion and they're tragically not willing to leave their sin they're not willing to Humble themselves they're not willing to seek forgiveness from God and their family and so they continue down a road they already know is a miserable one and they do so simply out of irrational stubbornness I can't even tell you how many times in my pastoral Ministry I've seen this so when someone is going down a destructive path they're already facing terrible consequences they're miserable and you say turn around this road is miserable and they'll tell you it is miserable and they keep going anyway you're like why would you do this and the answer I think is just simply Pride stubbornness I won't admit that I've gone wrong I won't admit that I'm a sinner that I need repentance that I need Grace and forgiveness as the consequences of their sin begins to crash up down around them they then desperately turn to whatever and whoever they think can help them like the ancient Israelites tried to escape the invasion by fleeing on Swift horses they try to escape the consequences of their sin by running running from their problems running from their families running running running running running and they only run from one heartbreak to the next just running from tragedy to tragedy and what sometimes it takes decades to learn is that there is nowhere to run when the problem you're trying to escape is in your heart you can't run from your own sin it will be where you're going you can't run away from your own problems because your own problems are right here the consequences of your sin will catch up to you as I quoted early Galatians 6 7 do not be deceived God cannot be mocked whatever a person sows this he will also reap be sure your sin will find you out well chapter 30 and we praise the Lord for this does not end with Israel's rejection and refusal it ends with God's intention and his intention is for Redemption and restoration I want to read these marvelous words to You and then we'll discuss them next time look at Isaiah 30 verse 18. These are some of the most beautiful words in Scripture and this is God's word to the rebellious heart Verse 18 therefore the Lord longs to be gracious to you and therefore he waits on high to have compassion on you for the Lord is a God of Justice how blessed are all those who long for him oh people in Zion inhabited in Jerusalem you will weep no longer he will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry and when he hears it he will answer you although the Lord has given you the bread of privation and water of Oppression he your teacher will no longer hide himself but your eyes will behold your teacher your ears will hear a word behind you this is the way walk in it whenever you turn to the right or to the left and you will defile your graven images overlaid with silver and your molten image is plated with gold you will scatter them as an impure thing and say to them be gone this is God's intention Redemption and restoration and we'll pick up there next time Lord what marvelous words we just read Words which Reveal Your Heart that you long to be gracious that you wait on high to have compassion and Lord how simple it is what you're waiting for you simply wait for the rebellious heart to long for you to long for you and the moment a heart begins to long for you Lord you do a marvelous work they cry out to you and you hear an answer you rescue you save and you free them from the sins that have enslaved them Lord that's my prayer for those who are in Rebellion my prayer for some heartbroken parents Lord is your comfort and your strength Lord help them to see and find Hope in the fact that you long to be gracious and wait on high to have compassion that is our hope and that is our reason for worship thank you for your grace in Jesus name amen amen please stand together once more let's close with the doxology praise God from whom all blessings [Music] praise [Music] oh man thank you for joining us this morning go in peace
