Desert northward toward Palm Springs as they approached Mount San Jacinto Lynn turns back as a snow storm begins to rage against the advice of seasoned hikers John decides to push on by May 2 2005 the snow is three feet deep as a snow storm begins many through hikers decide to wait out the weather but not John though an experienced hiker he had a reputation as a notoriously bad navigator John saw help from two hikers a Canadian nurse Connie Davis 46 and her son Alex 20 both with extensive altitude experience Donovan stayed about 30 feet behind them and disappeared John Donovan's story served as the backdrop to another mount San Jacinto survival story that was later featured in the survival docu-series I shouldn't be alive Brandon day 28 Gina Allen 24 become lost solve a mystery and are rescued May 5 2006 Brandon and Gina are in Palm Springs for Brandon's business convention afterward they join a tour group for a day hike near the top of a tram ride onto Mount San Jacinto dressed in jogging clothes they go off trail and get lost while their tour leaves without them thinking they had left early and took a taxi back Brandon and Gina spend the next three nights in near freezing temperatures with no gear and no supplies on May 8 2006 they discovered an abandoned campsite Gina finds a small backpack a map was writing in the margins the identification of John Joseph Donovan Brandon reads John's last words may 8 2015 down is gorge no way out may 11 2015 6 t today down to last 2 crackers May 14 2005 heading down to Creek for water goodbye love you all gina has a nervous breakdown but brandon settles her and the very real possibility of death comes over them after time brandon finds matches in Jon's backpack and starts a fire before long a helicopter appears but it flies by having never seen them they spent another night in the freezing cold the next day Brandon takes a small pot from the camp to the river to get water as he fills the pot with water he notices something at the water's edge something that doesn't belong it was the remains of John Donovan Brandon decides to take the matches and set the wilderness on fire in a desperate effort to signal for help the fire quickly erupts into a blaze and blows smoke for the next 45 minutes then a sound rises from the valley floor a helicopter approaches and lands Brandon and Gina were saved John's remains recovered three weeks later and he was buried with full military honors number 8 on October 22 1979 Susan Schwarz was found shot on the head more than once and her hands bound with cable in her home in Lynwood a small City 15 miles north of Seattle in Snohomish County police believe that the motive was burglary a stereo and some other item were missing in the property but other than that they have no clue about the killer police found no physical evidence no fingerprints and no DNA the case went unsolved for 32 years in 2011 Jim sharp and Dave heintzman to Snohomish County detectives came up with a completely new way to solve cases playing cards it was essentially a regular deck of cards only with faces and data of missing people in the area that are current cold cases Schwartz was a queen of hearts as clever as that was it was just step one in their master plan step two involved taking these decks and handing them out to the prisons all over Washington State in hopes that some board con playing poker or solitaire recognize the people on the cards step three if a prisoner tipped the detectives on the fates of these people there would be a reward one con recognized the victims face on one of the cold-case playing cards and alerted the authorities this caused the police to reopen the case more than three decades after the crime examine the evidence and eventually convict 57 year-old Greg Johnson from Seattle it is believed that Greg was angry with Susan because his wife Mary Susan's best friend was talking about their marital problems he accused Susan of meddling on their marriage and that Susan told his wife to leave him Greg Johnson was arrested and sentenced to life in prison number seven for most people high school friends offer camaraderie study partners and people to sit with at the lunch table but for one young woman a chance high school friendship unearthed the truth about her abduction as a baby Stephanie nurse was born in the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town South Africa on April 28 1997 three days later a woman disguised in a nurse's uniform took the infant and escaped with her possibly through a tunnel from the maternity unit to a nearby Road Stephanie's biological parents mourn and Celeste spent years trying to raise awareness about their kidnapped daughter in the media to no avail even after their family kept growing with the arrival of their second daughter cassadee they kept a yearly remembrance of sefa knee every April 28th in 2015 Cassidy began attending a new school and became friendly with a girl for years her senior even fellow classmates noticed theirs strong resemblance when mourn and Celeste nurse learned about the striking similarity they decided to investigate DNA evidence soon concluded that the girl who had grown up with a different family under a different name was in fact the missings F&E the woman who raised Stephanie for most of her life was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the harm she caused the nurse family as the report further stated the sentenced woman's husband had no ideas F&E was not his biological child number 6 on the surface John list seemed to have it made a deeply religious family man with a wife and three kids he had a successful career as a bank president and a sprawling 19 room Victorian mansion in the comfortable suburb setting of Westfield New Jersey but in December 1971 John lists neighbors realized something strange no one had seen any members of the list family for almost a month since November 9 neighbors noticed that all the lights in the house were constantly on until they started to burn out one by one eventually lists sixteen year old daughters drama coach worried about her extended absence notified police when police officers entered the home on December 7 1971 they heard organ music on an intercom system and found five dead bodies John's wife Helen their three teenage children Patricia Frederic and John jr. and John's 84 year-old mother Alma all had been shot dead Helen and the children were laid out in the mansion's grand ballroom John's mother was discovered in her apartment in the Attic police found a five-page letter that list had written to his pastor explaining that he killed his family to save their souls because he believed they were falling away from God list letter also said that by killing them they would die Christians the investigation until John list revealed that he had been living a lie for quite some time lists have been fired from his job as a bank president in Jersey City but hadn't told his family he was also having major financial problems and he was even taking money from his mother's bank account but by the time investigators had discovered his crimes 46 year old John list was nowhere to be found he had seemingly vanished from the face of the earth on May 21 1989 Union County prosecutors asked the producers of the Fox program America's Most Wanted to look at the case in the episode a forensic artist named Frank bender presented an aged progress clay bust of what John lists might look like at 63 years old one woman from Richmond Virginia saw the show and thought the bust looked like a neighbor Robert Clarke a church-going accountant who wore horn rimmed glasses FBI agents went to the accounting firm where Clarke worked in Richmond and took him in for questioning Robert Clarke looked remarkably similar to the clay bust featured on TV but he vehemently denied being the mass murderer Clarke's fingerprints however could not be denied without a doubt Robert Clarke was John lists list eventually opened up about the details of his life after the murders after he fled New Jersey list first took a train to Michigan and then to Denver he remarried and lived in Colorado until 1988 when he and his wife moved to Virginia listed trial and in April 1990 a jury found him guilty of five murders a judge sentenced him to five life terms behind bars in a 2002 television interview on ABC with Connie Chung list was asked why he did not take his own life if he felt so overwhelmed list said that he thought suicide would have barred him from heaven and that he had hoped to be reunited there with his family [Music] [Applause] number five a piece of chewing gum led to the capture of Osman Bell a man who murdered his ex-partner in July 1981 24 year-old Nova Welsh disappeared from her home in Birmingham England she was last seen alive having taken her two kids to stay with her ex-partner Osman Bell and gone dancing with her new partner Wayne Newby and their friends the next morning in afternoon neighbors described hearing Nova crying and quarreling with someone the very last sighting of her was around 6:00 p.m. on July 26 by a neighbor who said Nova appeared upset Osmond did not report her missing and told police he thought she had gone off with her new boyfriend or to visit her family in America on August 18 1981 Nova was eventually found dead inside a utility cupboard covered by a blanket and papers after neighbors reported a bad smell from her home a post-mortem revealed she died from pressure to the neck detectives found a chewing gum which had been used to seal up the cupboard door under the stairs of Nova's flat detectives also found an anonymous letter which had been sent to a friend of Nova implicating another man in her disappearance investigators could not pinpoint who owned the gum as well as who sent the letter as DNA testing at the time is not that good the case went cold for more than 30 years in September 2014 detectives reopened the case following advancements in DNA techniques the forensic ly preserved chewing gum and letter seal were sent for DNA screening which showed both were from the same person both items of evidence were matched the sample of osmond saliva investigators later found that there was a pattern of domestic violence in their relationship and the killing was apparently in retaliation after Nova began dating someone new Osmond was found guilty of manslaughter and sent to jail for 12 years number 4 in 1985 a murder case rocked the small town of Niantic Connecticut a pregnant wife was found strangled in the bedroom while her husband was away on a sailing trip the crime went unsolved until a witness came forward to give investigators a clue and of all places a VHS copy of a horror movie at an Ellen Sherman appeared to be a happy couple around town both professional ellen a publisher and a teacher at a local community college although they appeared to be the epitome of community grace their private lives told a different story Edie was a philanderer who often per ticket per tease Ellen seemed not to mind and often engage in the activities herself as time passed and furred from having many flings to having a serious mistress nancy prescott with whom he eventually had a child ellen at her limit told Edie to leave Nancy so they could start afresh and agreed and the couple tried to reignite their marriage Ellen herself becoming pregnant but on a Sunday in August 1985 while Edie had gone on a sailing trip with four friends he got a call from the police on the boats radio saying his pregnant wife was dead she was discovered by a male family friend who ed had asked to look in on her that night at first glance an Indian looked as if the intruder had come into their home strangled Ellen then made a hasty retreat in fact the air conditioner was still turned on ligatures around Ellen's neck provided the medical examiner with enough proof to determine she had been strangled with her own underwear but the furthering investigation would also show that she had been strangled before the panties had gone around her neck medical examiner's determined that she had been killed earlier that Sunday the question remained who would do this and as is usually the case investigators look first to the spouse as a suspect but Eadie who had been away on a sailing trip on Sunday he had a solid alibi with four witnesses he couldn't have done it forensic scientists were BAU fold that is until someone came forward with a tip that would blow the lid off the case the witness said she'd run into EDD at the local video store on the morning of his sailing trip she says edy recommended a horror movie called blackout a mystery about a disfigured man named Allen Devlin who early on may have brutally killed his wife and children then manipulated the crime scene to thwart investigators in the film blackout the killer uses a clever trick to throw investigators off he turns up the air conditioner to its highest setting and leaves it running the extremely cold temperatures slow down the rigor mortis process and the body's decomposition which can cause investigators to in accurately estimate the true time of death the coroner surmise that with the air conditioner running the time of death was actually two days prior on Friday not Sunday which means Eadie could have done it before leaving for his fishing trip police concluded that Edie strangled his wife to death with his bare hands after dinner on Friday he then wrapped her underwear around her throat to try and mislead investigators into thinking it was a sex crime after that and inspired by the movie blackout he then turned the air conditioner too high to slow down the decomposition process ultimately to misdirect the corner and the true time of death he then went for a fishing trip with his friends ed Sherman was arrested for murder prosecutors argued that Allen had given up on their marriage and wanted a divorce she being the primary owner of the business told Edie he could have his girlfriend and the sailboat and nothing else six years after the crime he was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to 50 years in prison number three there is no witnesses no fingerprints no gun and little forensic evidence when a woman is found slain 23 years ago but there is a human bite mark on her arm a bite that came back to haunt a female police detective who was unmasked as a killer of her former lovers wife in 1986 sherri rasmussen a 29 year old nursing supervisor was found shot and bludgeoned to death in the condo she shared with her husband police assumed two male robbers who had attacked another woman in the area were to blame for asthma since death the case went cold into 2009 when police detective learned that the DNA was from a woman and began to suspect the former lover of Rasmussen husband named Stephanie Lazarus a former Los Angeles police detective those Lazarus's own colleagues in the LAPD who resurrected the cold-case killing and connected her with a combination of scientific evidence on a shopping trip they saw her discard a cup from which she had been drinking they collected it and the DNA comparison convinced them testimony from a forensic expert said the DNA found in the bite mark on the victims arm was a match to Lazarus in 2012 Stephanie Lazarus was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to 27 years to life in prison prosecutors claimed that Lazarus was jealous that her ex-partner had married Rasmussen and decided to get revenge Rasmussen was bludgeoned about the head and shot three times in her chest and that during a struggle Lazarus bit Rasmussen on the arm they suggested that Lazarus knew to avoid leaving other evidence such as fingerprints and may have worn gloves but she may not have thought of the bite mark number two on September 3 1984 Rhonda Nathan a 67 year old grandmother was found unconscious on the floor of the hotel suite she occupied at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Blue Ash Ohio Rhonda was rushed to the hospital but it was too late she was pronounced dead on arrival Rhonda was sharing room 237 with her best friend of 50 years Elaine Chubb and Elaine's boyfriend Joe Kaplan both visiting from Florida they were all there to attend Elaine's grandsons Bar Mitzvah on Saturday morning Joe and Elaine woke early and left the room for breakfast at 7:30 Joe said he pulled the door shut making sure it was locked Rhonda stayed behind so that she could shower and dress with some privacy after breakfast Elaine and Joe returned to the room and found Rhonda unconscious on the floor the autopsy report concluded Rhonda died on severe beating bruises on her face and chest indicated she had been beaten with at least two different objects in addition to someone's fists two of Rhonda's teeth have been knocked out during the attack one is found on the floor next to her body the other in her stomach the motive appeared to be robbery Rhonda's gold and diamond necklace was missing along with $500 in cash from Elaine's purse the first lead in Rhonda Nathan's murder came when a handyman Elwood Jones who worked in the same hotel suffered a serious hand injury on the same day of the murder a first police weren't overly suspicious until they learned that Jones had given co-workers one explanation of the accident but told hospital employees and other this prompted investigators to interview Jones a surgeon dr. McDonough dr. McDonough said at first he took Jones's word that he had cut his hand on a dumpster but after looking at the wound more closely dr. McDonough knew that Jones was lying he recognized the wound as a human bite injury which hand specialists call a fight bite it happens when a clenched fist comes into contact with teeth dr. McDonough that his hand injury was not caused by cut from a metal object lab tests revealed that the cause of the infection was a virulent bacteria called eikenella corrodens eikenella is found typically in the human mouth under dental plaque around the gum line to get the icky nola to propagate you have to break the dental plaque there has to be a significant injury and that happens when you break a tooth usually or a hard object comes in contact with it such as a fist or a hand bone so just putting his hand in his mouth would not have given him eikenella please check on Jones's car and found a toolkit and a master passkey from the hotel two sets of door chains along with a gold and diamond pendant similar to the one rond and Nathan have been wearing before her death prosecutors believe that when Elaine and Joe left their hotel room for breakfast Jones was watching and thought the room is empty Jones went inside the hotel room using the master passkey inside he took the $500 in cash from the pocketbook then Rhonda Nathan emerged from the bathroom still wet from her shower he panics and beat Rhonda to death before leaving Jones took the diamond necklace from around his neck and left Elwood Jones was found guilty of aggravated murder aggravated burglary and aggravated robbery he was sentenced to death number one in 1991 32 year old Don Sanchez went missing from her motel in Los Altos California where she was last seen riding away with her boyfriend Bernardo bass in a 1979 Pontiac Grand Prix according to the Charlie project which profiles cold cases and a witness reported that best shot Sanchez in a vacant lot after the two got into a fight but there was no evidence the gun vassa's car and Sanchez's body were all missing so although the police arrested bass for Sanchez's murder they had to release him in 2007 the case was reopened after an informant reported that the car may have been disassembled and buried in a large abandoned lot in Alviso the exact location in the lot was not specified and the cost to excavate the entire area was too high further the lock contained a substantial amount of buried and surface metallic debris making a simple survey with metal detectors insufficient so the district attorney enlisted the help of the USGS which in turn contacted NASA's payload directed flight group to help with a search for Bass's car working together USGS NASA and since set aside hysts and engineers deployed hacen set a max five point zero a rover to map the magnetic environment of the abandoned lot after processing the data set the USGS was able to pinpoint some specific places ripe for excavation the ensuing dig turned a pieces of Bass's car the lead was eventually pleading no contest to charges of manslaughter nearly two decades after the crime was committed he was sentenced to six years of prison for manslaughter [Music] [Music] you
