hey everyone its mark Wiens with migration ology calm I am in Hawaii and today I am at the Polynesian Cultural Center which is a center that shows the end displays and preserves the cultures of the main islands of Polynesia and so I'm just going to walk around today enjoy this Center and then also there's something called the taste of Polynesia which is kind of like snack bars where they prepare a few local dishes or snacks from each of the islands that you can eat when you're walking through the village and so I'm going to stop at each of the snack bars and see what what they serve and then also just enjoy this beautiful atmosphere so the first stop I am at the Samoan village and can see they have a menu for the taste of Polynesia and so these are the three specialty items that they are serving in Samoa I get one peach of the Polynesia thank you thank you so this is a sausage and gravy which is very common in Samoa with the British influence but this is served over rice and then with the sausages cut up into pieces and then with a thick brown gravy that is a big chunk of sausage I'm going to one bite that it's a really meaty sausage but then that gravy is it's like a brown gravy it's a little bit thick and a little bit salty but just really goes well with that steamed rice the next snack is called a punny Popple which is a very popular kind of sweet treat but snack in samoa and it almost when she served it up it almost looked like a like a bun after she put it onto the plate she loaded it up with coconut cream which is looks like a coconut cream syrup and so there's you can see that big roll of meat there I'm going to add some more of that coconut sauce to it okay looks really fluffy as well okay that is that's really good actually though the bun is extremely soft and really fluffy and kind of almost has a smoky flavor to it maybe I like a smoky roasted flavor to it then that sauce it's really good because it's not too sweet but it's really creamy and almost has a buttery coconut flavor to it okay and then finally served in a paper bag is the pineapple pie I don't know if I should just take a bite out of it or maybe I should just break a piece off first so we can show you the interior to see what's inside of this so it looks almost like pineapple and custardy in the middle and then with the kind of a flaky almost like crumbly crust kind of soft bread outer layer and then inside it's like a pineapple custard I think I like that honey Popo better now I'm in the village of Tonga and one of the things what they're serving here is called Oh ty looks kind of like a cross between a drink and a pudding and it's made with seasonal fresh fruit right now it's like e peaches and green apples mm-hmm oh that's that's extremely refreshing that's like a it's pretty sweet I got a I got a little piece of light chi in that bite so it tasted had a very fruity has a very fruity and juicy and refreshing kind of milky flavor to it it's kind of like a a milky fruit salad Johanna welcome to Tahiti thank you can I get one of the co la Palau and also one of the PO a yes please thank you so this one is the co-ed Apollo which is the traditional Hawaiian kind of snack or dessert and all that looks that is a beautiful color it's like a light purple almost kind of like violet color and it looks very kind of starchy and pasty but it's a blend of sweet potato and coconut hmm it tastes like that tastes like mashed potatoes but with kind of like some coconut sweetness to it and it's more sticky than mashed potatoes almost like a little gluey it kind of sticks to the roof of your mouth but that's kind of that good thing about it because then you sort of last longer so it doesn't need meat you can't immediately swallow it you got got to like play with it in your mouth because it's so sticky this dish is a Tahitian PO a which is a very ripe banana cake and then she topped it with coconut cream as well oh that's actually pretty good like you know like with a banana sort of goes to that just kind of almost like mushy stage where it's very ripe and very sweet and almost like a little bit alcoholic that's what the bananas taste like thank you I am in between sort of Fiji and New Zealand and so this is the snack bar here and I'm going to order everything they have there is a meat pie and there is an eggs and bacon little quiche but what I am most excited about eating is the Fijian curry is this one the meat pie this one is the meat pie goodbye Oh in the quiches below okay I got all three things but I got to start with the Fijian curry that is calling my name there are pieces of chicken in here and it looks like there are some potatoes some carrots and that might be it and then just a nice bright yellow curry sauce oh and I can smell just the curry powder coming off of this bite okay this might be my favorite thing so far that is that's very good it has a really pronounced flavor of curry powder so I can taste all those spices the cumin the was kind of the turmeric I can taste the turmeric in there and then that piece of chicken was really soft and tender as well this is some very good curry it's not really spicy but it does have a nice blend of spice flavor to it and those carrots just disintegrated in my mouth next up I'm going for the New Zealand a meat pie that is filled with minced meat in the middle and then I can also taste some cheese and then what I like is that the top is kind of a flaky flaky pastry but then the bottom is more of a like gooey pastry so you got two different kinds of pastry kind of textures and then with all that meat and cheese in the bottom and then finally the hue schhh maybe i should kind of break it into this to see what is inside oh yeah all its bacon oh yeah I forgot there's bacon in the middle ohokay bacon egg and there's some tomato and cheese and then that kind of that pastry around it that's like scrambled eggs and bacon encased in a crusty flaky pastry wrapper so I just finished eating around the Polynesian Cultural Center we ate a bunch of things many of them were kind of sweet everything was pretty good and even the sweet things were pretty good because they were mostly naturally sweet and not overly sweet I especially liked that Samoan bun with the coconut cream on top was really good but definitely my favorite dish of the day at the Polynesian Cultural Center was the Fijian curry that topped topped everything else for me this has been a great time a great afternoon at the Polynesian Cultural Center just watching walking around
