all right so you got a lock but you don't have a key well there's a way to make one is called impression you guys been asking me to do this for a while but because this would be such a long video without the luxury of fast-forward I've been putting it off but here's what you're going to need you gotta need you you need your lock of course and then you're going to need a key this is a blank key the m1 blank I got this from Home Depot for a dollar 27 don't get just one if you're just starting to learn how to impression you're going to want to get at least three or four of them you're going to need it depends on the lock but a lot of guys try to impression just using their hand you can put it in there and wiggle it back and forth and to be honest on a four pin lock this is probably how I'm going to do it on five pin lock or six pin lock or even more you might want to use a pair of vise grips if you're only going to do it once or twice by scrips clamp on their bigger handle and that way it doesn't really hurt your fingers very much if you're going to be doing a lot of impression you might want to get a tool this is called a framing tool I got this from one of the online dealers 60 pounds I paid for this is about $85 u.s. and the way these work inside of there there's a couple of looks like little needles and you put it on there and tighten up the handle and it's all knurled and it really holds it very very solidly you can be really careful with tools like this because it allows you to put a lot of torque on that key and it makes it easy to break when your impression around right there right at the bowl so try to avoid it go slow and that's what impression is all about you really have to go slow if you try to go too fast it's just not going to work out for you you're also going to need a file and the best file to use from pressing is called a swiss number for swiss number four starts out almost needle-like on the end very very fine teeth on this thing so that when we file and we file only in one direction and only a few strokes at a time it leaves a beautiful smooth bed or smooth groove on that key making it very easy to detect where the pins are rubbing and therefore telling us sort of file next so before you get started though we're going to need to prepare the key so now this is the iffy part of creating this video OOP standby my door just flew open we're having a windstorm all right sorry about that big winds outside if you take a look at that key you notice these are brass keys and then they're covered with Chrome and that's purely aesthetics but we need to get that off of there you have a very rough these are a punched out and a very rough texture on the top of there we want that top very smooth we want to remove that layer of chrome and we want to leave that almost glass like so that any minor scrape we can easily detect it using a pair or a magnifier of some kind I got this off of ebay I think is like 10 or $12 very inexpensive and put that on my head so I can hopefully see this thing so we're going to remove that and the way I do it you can use 400 grit 600 grit 1000 grit this is 600 grit paper I've just cut into squares and I'm going to use my lock I'm going to wrap this over the top the lock like so and we have a nice flat edge there and then just take the the working edge of the key and just back and forth and it's perfectly flat and what we're doing is we're filing off that chrome finish so I'm going to go ahead and put the fast-forward on and I'm going to get this done and I'll show you what it looks like okay when you get done you can see it's just beautiful brass finish nice and shiny almost glass like and that's exactly what we want now we want to figure out where we want to start filing so again part of the preparation of the key is we have to put starter grooves on it and when it's nice and smooth like that it makes it very easy we're just going to take it slide it into the key or into the lock and then just use your finger and just go back and forth like this and when you do that those pins are actually scraping along that freshly polished surface and hopefully you can get the camera to focus and I get the right angle I think you can see four little marks there and that's just from the pointed part of the key pin rubbing against it nice perfect marks so I'm going to take this off camera put on my magnifier and I'm going to get a starter groove filed there and the way we do it I'll show you what the first one is get my magnifier on we line up the tip of our file with each of the marks and just give a quick mark just like that so do that for each of the four how can we get done you just got those started gives you some guides and it's important at this point to get them as close to perfect as you can because this is a foundation for the rest of it all right those grooves are now if I get the focus going there pretty finely finished because when we took our file we didn't go back and forth back and forth you just go in one direction and it leaves a nice smooth finish so if anything brushes against those shiny parts we're able to see it now we're going to take it and put a key into our lock and now the real impression job begins now what we're going to do we're going to depend on binding pins to tell us where to cut and now it's going to take a little bit of pressure instead of just gently wiggling it to mark it now we're really going to be putting some pressure on this key and every time we turn it the binding pin will dig in a little bit deeper than those other pins that are just brushing so let's just go back and forth a little bit and then take a look when we look at the key you have to wear the magnifier no doubt about it and what you're trying to detect is just a little bit deeper mark than in all the others and I think I can see it let me pull away from the camera so I get a better look with a magnifier I can see a slight mark on pin number three and so that's what I'm going to do I'm going to take my file and using just the tip I'm going to go to position number three and just give it a couple of licks and again we want to get just a couple of cuts to cut it a little bit deeper don't go too fast because once you cut too far you're everything is totally lost so then take it and keep wiggling and now either you've reached the proper depth on pin number three and he's going to stop binding and another one of the pins will start binding or pin number three is going to stay the binder and he's going to leave another mark so I know it's almost impossible to see on the camera because of the resolution but I can see on number three we have just a little bit mark again I'm going to give them another lick okay now we keep repeating this process over and over just going one or two cuts with the file at a time don't go too fast just pay attention to where the marks are and only give one or two cuts there so I'm going to put this and fast forward until we either fail or we get an open okay here we go and there we go that one a little faster than I thought still a little bit rough you can hear it but that key works almost every time still a little rough we can continue to look for marks but I'm going to call it good that's not much bidding at all I got to be honest but it is a successful you can still see a little mark on number three there I might give him a couple more licks but that's how we do an impression a not too difficult at all I had no idea the key was cut this light but I think we just got very very lucky but it is a successful impression a job so there you go if you want to learn how an impression it's going to take some practice you go the hard part is figuring out the marks I'd advise you to get a magnifier and use natural light I'm using a I'm right in front of a window and when you turn the key to reflect the sunlight sometimes it's easier to detect that scrape left by the binding pin anyway fellas it's all there is to it if you want to get into impressionnant take a lot of practice to get pretty good at it real fast thanks for your time stay safe stay legal you
