at home, the mayor of Oakland today addressed the freeway shooting last night that left an eight year old boy in grave condition. As ktvu Alex Wertz reports, the child was traveling in his family's car just before 6:30 p.m. when he was caught in the crossfire. Multiple calls came in to 911 with reports of people in two cars shooting at each other on the 580 Freeway eastbound near Grand Avenue. Officers report an eight year old child traveling in an unruly vehicle was hit by gunfire. The mother drove directly to Highland Hospital. The child was then transferred to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in Oakland. All lanes of 580 eastbound were shut down for about six hours. Officers combing the empty freeway looking for evidence, including bullet casings. This is the second time this year, tragically in the East Bay, a child has been caught in the crossfire of a freeway shooting . Being in the wrong place at the wrong time, this grandmother says she fears driving on the freeways in the east Bay, concerned about safety, especially for her grandkids. It's real scary. That's why I was telling him I feel sad for them growing up in the world that they're grown in. Growing up in right now, you know, bullying, violence in the schools. She shootings. Every time you turn around, there's always shootings on the freeway. That's been my fear for years. Oakland Mayor Shengtao issued a written statement saying this is a horrific tragedy, noting, As a mother, my heart breaks for the young victim and the victims family. Senseless gun violence has impacted far too many lives . And when an innocent child is harmed, it is unfathomable. I am staying abreast of the situation and join all Aucklanders in pulling for the young victim's full recovery. The CHP is the lead agency on the case since it happened on the freeway. Lieutenant Slade Durham shared the description of the two vehicles they are looking for. It's a dark gray sedan and a maroon colored SUV. We're asking the public's help. Investigators believe the suspect vehicles may have exited at Park Boulevard at about 625 last evening. Police are looking for witnesses, surveillance video of the suspect vehicle is described as a dark gray sedan and a maroon SUV.
