huggins was duped warner purposefully released the series pilot briefly in the west indies as the film girl on their own say that the studio could claim 77 sunset strip was based on a movie not the writings of roy huggins as was actually the case the character of stu bailey had first appeared in his 1946 novel the double take the legal finagling worked as the loophole allowed the studio to withhold money from the creator ed burns went from serial killer to hipster burns appeared in girl on the run but is a far different character he was the twisted killer kevin smiley in the pilot film however there was one connection between burns's early murder row and cookie both characters compulsively ran calms through their hair [Music] the show spawned a hit novelty pop song in 1959 burns cut strip star a 108 pages 11 345 words letter she told him i didn't want it to be second best to anyone the series took a dramatic turn in its sixth season in the summer of 63 after five successful years warner brothers looked to shake things up dragnet star jack webb was brought in as executive producer the entire cast was slashed save for symbolist the tone took a darker turn into film noir territory with stu bailey as lone api as even the theme music was replaced fans were not thrilled with the change to say the least cancellation quickly followed symbolist played batman's butler in five different series later in his career the actor went into voice work bringing bruce wayne's loyal helper alfred pennyworth to life in a handful of animated series batman the animated series 1992 a revival in 1995 led by clint eastwood in 1995 the wb network launched the studio looked to mine its own history for fresh content clint eastwood was lined up to produce a reboot with actors jim cavallazo and timothy ulifond a short pilot was filmed yet the series never made it past the testing phase this series was produced by warner brothers for abc and season 2 episode 2 the cookie caper had some inside jokes about other series produced by that studio for abc early in episode cookie ed burns indicated that he doesn't know that will hutchins is the star of sugarfoot 1957. later he can be seen reading an issue of tv guide with the stars of maverick 1957 james garner and jack kelly on the cover both of those shows were produced by warner brothers as was this one [Music] the building in which the detective's officers were located was in real life the home of the mary webb davis modeling agency the front of the building the diners lodge driveway and part of dinos were reproduced on a warner brothers soundstage which is where most of the scenes that took place in that area were filmed the doorknob on the real door was on the left and that's where it was on the markup in the earliest episodes later for some reason they moved the knob on the sound stage version to the right the merry web davies office was eventually replaced by the tiffany theatre the building has since been torn down the network handed the creative reigns of the show over to jack webb and william conrad for the show's final season webb and conrad proceeded to fire the entire cast except ephraim zimbalist jr and re-melded his characters to bailly into an international spy this was the first of warner brothers formulaic detective series abc was so impressed with its success that they ordered three identical series that differed only in their signing locales bourbon street bait 1959 hawaiian eye 1959 and surfside 6 1960. a fourth series the roaring 20s 1960 added variety by taking place in
