75 Updates NEW in Minecraft 1.17

grab some popcorn guys because today we're covering everything that just came out in minecraft 1.17's caves and cliffs update part one we'll touch on these awesome signs later but shouts out to dash japs and ancient king first up are amethyst geodes a brand new type of structure you can find underground in cave systems filled with all sorts of new blocks that make lovely sounds when you lock on them but now let's look at some of the blocks they're made of number two here is smooth basalt as you may have seen earlier in the amethyst geode it's a new block that will generate along with that structure and you can also make it in a furnace the salt can be found in the nether and you can cook it up to get a smooth basalt variant calcite is another new block found within the geodes right now it's the only place you can find calcite and currently doesn't have a stair or slab form so we can hold out for hope budding amethyst is also a new block it's the cracked looking block that you actually see amethyst crystals growing from and it is the only way that you can actually grow said amethyst crystal buds and lastly from the geodes or the amethyst block itself these are the majority of what's found within the geodes so you can locate the blocks there or you can take amethyst shards and actually make them so you can get a block of amethyst just like that moving on from geodes we have tinted glass a new type of glass that you can actually make by taking regular glass and adding in some amethyst shards and you'll get two tinted glass for your trouble now these types of glass will prevent light from bleeding through them you can even see that more dramatically over here where these torches are not covering any of the light or darkness rather over on this side the next new 1.17 feature is the spyglass and when you look through it you can actually zoom in at great distances as you can see right there and as you can see through this we can actually look very very closely up through this ravine it's made using copper ingots and an amethyst shard okay this one's interesting pistons have particles when they break a block now because believe it or not pistons are capable of breaking blocks such as the budding amethyst right here they will now give off a bunch of particles whenever it is they decide to do that next change are raw ores rock gold raw copper which we'll get to soon and raw iron have have changes when you mine them where before you used to get the block you'll now instead get a raw version of the ore in question and this is impacted by fortune and shams and of course there's now blocks of raw ores so now you can take all of the raw ores you've been collecting and turn them into a compacted block just like that so now we've got compacted gold copper and iron blocks beans they they look like beans and if it wasn't obvious enough there have been ore texture changes here are the differences in what the oars look like with the old variants on the top here and the new variants on the bottom here these changes were made to make it easier for colorblind people to differentiate between all of the different ore types so we're about that lapis lazuli block name change yes believe it or not this change was made to make it more consistent with the other orb blocks it used to be called the lapis lazuli block now it's called block of lapis lazuli okay moving on we've got copper copper is a new ore that can be used for building spy glasses as well as various other things it's even good for paths like this one and what you're seeing here is a path made up entirely of copper or blocks don't mind if i do and that's what's next up here the copper block to make one you'll take some smelted raw copper turn it into copper ingots to get your block of copper now this comes in tons of different variants all of them are different based on if they are waxed unwaxed as well as their oxidation levels stair versions slab versions so copper waxing what is it exactly well you can use honeycombs in order to wax copper and that will prevent it from oxidizing changing from these different colors over to something new oxidizing will change the color of the coppers if you wanted copper to stay one way then you would just wax it wax on my friend and so naturally there's wax off as well by simply taking an axe to one of your wax blocks and right clicking it you can then remove the waxing that was placed on and on top of that you can actually use the axe to restore a block back to its deoxidized state up next is the lightning rod yes but let me has a new block you can make with copper that will attract the nearest lightning bolt during thunderstorms to make it all you need are three copper ingots placed as such and you've now got a lightning rod on deck so we're gonna start a storm and we're gonna wait real patiently any nearby lightning bolts will instead be attracted right to this puppy instead oh there we go wow just got it i got anyways lightning deoxidization is a new thing as well lightning will now deoxidize copper so as you can see right here boom nice and deoxidized love your pig you better watch out dude we're back in the caves to show off deep slate it's a new block that is found only in the lower y levels of blobs which we're down at right now it also has an unreasonable number of forms have you ever wanted to purchased counts as one entry so grab some at ldz dot store et cetera an exciting one though is deep slate ores so since deep slate is intended to be at the lower y levels in 1.17 1.18 it has a copy of every ore so these will act like normal ores except they take a little bit longer to mine compared to our typical ores found in higher y levels within the cave systems and yes there's even infested deep slate as well which is where the silverfish like to hide from time to time easy does it dude here's another new block it's known as tough it's this gray rock it's not quite deep slate nor stone but it's basically a type of diorite granite or andesite variant although it does not currently have a polished form and can be found located in the lower parts of your y levels in game speaking of lower levels we've got drip stone this is a new block that is used for decorative purposes in a biome that will appear later on in this video taking on stalactite and stalagmite forms as well as a type of block form too greater detail on that the pointed drip stone which is what we were just talking about those are those stalactites and stalagmites and by breaking this block it will make that fall and will cause damage to you if you happen to be stuck underneath it you can see what i'm talking about ein pain now also if you land on a stalactite you'll also take damage so it's perfect for making traps next up is the lush caves a brand new type of biome a cave biome specifically and currently you can play with it in the custom world generation settings but it'll generate naturally beginning in 1.18 and as you can see there is a lot going on here azalea now azalea is a new block acquired in lush caves and from wandering traders and it's got two different variants a regular and a flowering type as well and it's pretty useful we'll explore that use in just a little bit here's the non-baby variant the azalea tree when you bone meal in azalea bush it will turn into an azalea tree these do have oak wood as the type of wood they use but they do have a special type of variant of azalea leaves and they sound a little bit different and look a little bit different as well and yeah it looks like i got ahead of myself a little bit azalea leaves lovely some have flowers slipped up so 29 and 30 are cave vines and glow berries check this out first of all you can climb up these puppies very nice but more importantly from time to time they will be bearing fruit you can right click it in order to get your hands on these glowberries which are a source of food that you can find in cave systems if you didn't notice they also give off moderate amounts of light you know hence the glowberry drip leaf is another type of plant found within the lush caves but you can also get it from the wandering trader now the small ones don't do too much they're mostly decorative but the big ones can actually be used as a form of staircase however if you do not move quickly up these stairs then what's going to end up happening is that they will break underneath you so it makes for some really cool parkouring opportunities out they do eventually come right on back though so worry not four blossoms if you're wondering what these particle effects are that we're seeing around us well believe it or not they are from the spore blossom it's a new decorative block that will create those particles they hang from ceilings in lush caves and it can also be obtained from wandering traders can only be hung on ceilings by the way next is rooted dirt a new dirt variant which is what everybody wanted it's a new type of dirt that is made by azalea trees and it can also be found within the lush caves as you can see it is slightly different looking and has a slightly different breaking sound effects okay moss blocks another type of block from the lush caves but they can also be found in shipwrecks as well and you can turn them into carpet form too so check this out nice little carpet look at that using bone meal on it will actually turn other blocks nearby into moss blocks so believe it or not we are actually like mining stone it's very interesting and it may change mining mechanics as we know it hanging roots another one so hanging roots are a new decorative block that can be found in lush caves specifically hanging underneath rooted dirt next is axolotls finally getting to some mobs this is the latest mob to come to minecraft this new aquatic mob that will come in five different colors and they are also intended to be found in underground pools for the lush cave so check this out spawn in a couple you can see various different color variants popping off right now you can also catch them with buckets so if you right click nearby one it's not letting me oh that's i was like what's happening there we go so we just caught ourselves the cutest predator and you can actually get rid of the axolotl by placing the water bucket down you can breed these guys and believe it or not they'll also help battle okay drip stone caves this is another new biome intended for 1.18 but you can do it with custom world generation settings and visit it right now this is roughly what it will look like from time to time although world generation may change so we'll revisit this one 1.18 eventually comes out check this out though glow squids another new mob the long awaited by some and dreaded by others mob which is known as the glow squid is finally here so we're gonna go ahead and fill up some water for this poor poor soul spawn em in this is what the glow squid looks like complete with their own sets of particles and their very own unique drop though it does act like a normal squid you can't see it in really dark conditions so here's a glow squid pool we're gonna place a glow squid all the way down here and as you can see it is completely illuminated despite being super far down there and if you kill them they drop a new item known as the glow ink sack which we'll get to in just a second it's actually right over here glow item frames another feature as you might have seen in use a couple times there's now glow item frames these item frames can be seen even in the darkest of conditions so check this out super dark area put a glow ink sack combine that with the item frame to make a glow item frame and look at the massive difference way more illuminated there's also glowing text on signs notice how the text on these sides is growing lightly glowing brightly this entire time well that's thanks to the glow squid if we use glowing sac you can see here it will instantly illuminate the signs in question and what's really exciting is it will actually cause text to illuminate in the darkness even if there's nothing else around to cause it to be bright glow lichen is up next this is a new block that is found growing on the sides of blocks in caves which will make a small amount of light it is not to be confused with glow squids but as you can see here it does provide the occasional light source when placed timer changes scenery we've got some powder snow over here this is a new block that's very similar to snow but it allows you to fall in it it is the snowy snow that was mentioned at minecon and as you can see we are slipping right on down and we've got a very interesting effect that is occurring on us as well this new mechanic we will get to a little bit later this is normal snow this is powder snow very subtle difference speaking of subtle there have been occasionally subtle changes to mobs that drop food such as the polar bear when you kill a polar bear you normally get raw fish well if you kill a polar bear while it's on fire it will now drop cooked food instead of raw food thank you very much also don't kill polar bears skeletons will convert into strays when they find themselves placed inside of powder snow eventually these guys will become strays you can see them kind of shivering right now that is indication that that is exactly what is occurring here so i'm gonna go ahead and count my blessings that okay well i spoke too soon you'll be able to see here in just a hot second that this skeleton is going to turn into a stray just like that so lava and powder snow work quite interestingly with cauldrons now lava colds were added for bedrock java parody from a long time ago and powder snow cauldrons are a way to get powder inside of your cauldrons you can literally just take a bucket boom grab the lava put it right back in and same story with the powder snow another new mob added the goat mob is added to caves and cliffs they're a new mob that will spawn in normally on mountains and currently they don't drop anything but judging by bedrock edition they will be dropping some goat horns in the near future here is what the goat looks like hey cutie pie now you can actually milk goats in order to get milk and if you happen to be near a ledge the goat will actually begin attacking you candles have been added as well now candles are a new decorative block which can be made with one honeycomb and one string placed on top of each other as such and as you can see here you can also dye them by getting all sorts of different dyes and combining them to make all sorts of different candle variants you can light them using a flint and steel just like this and you can extinguish them by right clicking with an empty hand in addition to that you can also add multiple candles to one block which will improve their overall brightness factor and a fun little bonus one here you can now add candles on top of cakes world height fluidity we're currently at y equals minus 41 in this world which is usually the void as of previous minecraft versions but this is due to world height fluidity which allows for a huge amount of various strange world heights 1.18 is going to have a maximum world height of 384. now spectators can see in lava so what we're going to do is go into spectator mode and check it out we can go right down to this lava and now we can see right through it which is uh so useful there have been changes to mine shaft generation namely mine shafts normally would generate in open air they'll now have chains and support beams to keep them steady the skulk sensor this is an interesting one indeed skulk sensors are a new block that will detect vibrations and movement and will send off a redstone signal now until 1.18 they'll only be available via commands so they won't be showing up anywhere including not in the creative mode menu the slash item command is a new one for all of you command block functioneers this command was basically a replace item replacement but with extra powers some of those extra powers will be up shortly but the first one is shown off right here we're gonna swap between the main hand and the off hand we have a button that can actually do that for us which will be very useful for a lot of map makers item modifiers is the next one they're a type of data pack utensil used by the slash item command and they can change various things about a given item for example we're going to go ahead and randomize the damage value on this sword and you can actually see it going all over the place on my hotbar down there and in addition to that we can also randomize the enchantment sweeping edge sweeping edge of the band of arthropods another bane of arthropods and you can just keep going and going and going check this out bundles a new way for storage and game it's a new storage item currently command only because it's going to be coming out officially in 1.18 they can take an item by right clicking in the inventory and storing items within it so we're going to add items to this bundle and you can begin to see that it's being filled up with various different things we can throw some copper in there some diorite as you can see it will slowly but surely show off all of the various items found within it and you can also see the amount of space that's left in it as well to get the items out you'll have to right click and all of them will pop out on the ground in front of you we can now utilize shaders for some very interesting effects as you can see here we're using it right now to hide ravagers and make them invisible even though they are actually still there shulker box item spilling okay check this one out when you drop a shulker box in something that would destroy it like a fire the items will now spill out instead so check this out any luck we can try and there we go we got the items they all spilled out very quickly instead of being burned instantly this next one is shulker budding when a shulker hits another shulker with one of its shulker bullets it's got a chance of causing another shulker to spawn in but only when that shulker that's been hit shell is nice and open oh look it actually spawned in a duplicate over here oh look it spawned in another one right over here too okay i'm in a little bit of trouble light blocks another edition this is quite interesting indeed these are known as light blocks they are a command slash creative only item it will emit light but it is otherwise invisible and you can only see where they are while holding one as you can see right here it does act entirely invisible in survival mode and in creative mode you can see them standing out in a wow all over the place essentially if you right-click them you can change their brightness level as you can see here we're getting all sorts of different types of brightness level light blocks after modifying them marker blocks check these out they're a new entity which is completely invisible even to spectators to the left is a marker and to the right is an armor stand so believe it or not going into spectator mode here you can see that the armor stand goes in visible half visible and the marker does not do that at all monochromatic logo this is a new option for the loading screen if you've ever seen this menu pop up you can actually now change it under the accessibility settings just turn on mono chrome logo to on and now when this menu shows up it looks way cooler in my opinion the redstone tab has been reorganized so we're gonna go and show you that in creative mode it now looks a little different than it did before that's it new advancements have been added for this one we're gonna temporarily say goodbye to my webcam so you'll be able to see all these new advancements popping up on the screen look at those and here's some more and then one final one up here whatever floats your goat interesting sounding huh changes to grass paths it's no longer called grass bath it's now called dirt path that's the only change water logging rails you can now water log rails so that you can have mine carts go through the water lovely simple fireworks can now be made in the recipe book these are fireworks that are made simply with gun powder as well as with paper they didn't previously show up in the recipe book but now they do if a parade there are 11 new particles that have been added in we've got dripping drip stone lava dripping drip stone water falling spore blossom the glow effect the glow squid ink wax off scrape we have snowflake oh gosh so sensitive spore blossom air vibration and wax on there's now a freeze damage game rule for that freeze effect we saw a little bit earlier this will determine if you take damage in powder snow or not if you set it to true you will take damage over time once this effect grows largely enough you'll actually see my hearts down there turn blue and cause damage now if we were to turn that off you'd see here that we are no longer taking damage beacon beams will now display a lot higher than they used to beforehand they only showed up to y equals 255. so now you can see there's a huge difference with this one showing up all the way up to 1100 textures for clocks and compasses have been changed the old ones on top the new ones on bottom we've also been some slight changes to the blackstone textures the changes are minor but they do exist here's on the old on the right is the new on the left is the old on the right is the new see if you can spot them there's a new command tag to determine if a vibration from a skull sensor will hit a block type or not usually only wool can do that but for now there is a slight modification so that now these guys will not set off any sort of movement even though it's glass nearby suspicious stew is now edible at full hunger so we've got full hunger right now and yet we are still capable of eating all these delicious potentially delicious stews and finally experience orbs will now merge together spawn experience orbs in the bottom of this pit as far down as you can and
