hello and welcome to this tech tip from will in the last video I gave you an overview of the roles and features for Windows Server 2016 you should now know what the roles and features are and should understand the differences between the two in this video I'll demonstrate how to install roles and features on Windows Server 2016 so I'll now change over to my Windows Server 2016 datacenter Edition server so that I can demonstrate how to install roles and features with Windows Server 2016 there are two ways to install roles and features the first is to use server manager and the second is to use Windows PowerShell if you installed Windows Server 2016 like I have with the desktop experience interface you can use either method for installing roles and features however if you opted for the server core interface you can only use Windows PowerShell since there's no graphical interface in server core from which to run server manager in this demonstration I will install both the DHCP server role and the Windows Server backup feature onto this server I will demonstrate how to do this starting with server manager and later with Windows PowerShell from the desktop of my Windows Server 2016 server I will first click the start button and will then search for server manager from the search results I will select server manager to open the tool server manager for Windows Server 2016 is largely unchanged from Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 r2 with server manager open to install a role or feature from the top right hand corner I will select the manage option and then from the drop down list I will select add roles and features this opens the add roles and features wizard the first screen of the wizard is the before you begin page this page gives a brief overview of what you're about to do and provide some helpful prerequisites that should be met before installing any roles and features when you're ready to continue click the next button the next screen is the select installation type page from here we essentially get to installation types to choose from the first installation type role-based or feature-based installation allows you to install a role or feature onto a single server understand this does not necessarily have to be this server and could be a remote server on the network the second installation type Remote Desktop Services installation was first introduced in Windows Server 2012 with this installation type the administrator is able to create a virtual desktop infrastructure deployment by installing Remote Desktop Services onto one or more servers in my case I'll select the first option role-based or feature-based installation and will then click Next on the next screen were asked to select a destination server once again we have two options to choose from the first option select a server from the server pool allows the administrator to choose which Windows Server 2016 server on the network you want to install your roles and features onto if you have multiple Windows Server 2016 servers on your network you're able to add these servers into server manager and install roles and features onto them remotely in other words you don't have to be logged on to a server locally to install a role or feature onto it since I have just one Windows Server 2016 server in my environment the only server listed is the one I'm working on server one meanwhile the second option select a virtual hard disk allows the administrator to install roles and features onto a virtual hard disk for instance you could have a virtual hard disk that has Windows Server 2016 installed on it providing the virtual hard disk is offline you can install roles and features directly onto the virtual hard disk since I wanted to install roles and features onto this server and not onto a virtual hard disk I will choose the option select a server from the server pool and from the server pool below I will select this server server one and will then click Next next we have the select server roles screen from here we can see the list of roles that can be installed onto the server as you can see there are rather a lot of roles to choose from over 20 in fact if you highlight a particular role the DHCP server role in my case notice that on the right hand side a description of the role will appear selecting a role for installation is simply a matter of ticking the checkbox to the left of the role notice that when I select the DHCP server role I've received an additional dialog box to install the DHCP server role and required to install certain features as well namely the role administration tools for DHCP so I will accept the features by clicking the add features button with the DHCP server roll selected for installation I would then click the next button on the next screen of the wizard we have the select features screen this screen is very similar to the previous screen only this time instead of rolls you're able to select which features you want to install once again if I scroll down through the list of features you can see that there are rather a lot of features to choose from as with the roles on the previous screen installing a feature is simply a matter of ticking the features checkbox on this occasion I will choose to install the Windows Server backup feature so that I can backup this server with the feature selected I will then click Next because I selected the DHCP server role earlier are now being presented with the DHCP server screen this screen simply gives some additional information on the DHCP server role when you're ready to continue click the next button the last screen of the wizard is the confirm installation selections page this page lists all of the roles and features you selected from the wizard for installation in my case the DHCP server role and its administration tools and the Windows Server backup feature it's worth noting that some roles and features will require a reboot of the server to complete the installation notice at the top of the page there's a check box restart the destination server automatically if required if you tick this check box the server will reboot itself automatically if required without prompting you as soon as the roles and features have finished installing if you do not tick this check box you may be prompted to restart the server manually to complete the installation personally I'm a fan of ticking this check box so I will select the option and will acknowledge the warning prompt that follows informing me that I will not receive any further restart notifications another option I'd like to point out on this page is the export configuration settings option this is a useful option if you have multiple servers in your environment that require the same roles and features if I click on the export configuration settings link I'm able to export the selections are made with the wizard into an XML file I could then take the XML file to another Windows Server 2016 server and imports the settings onto that server saving me the trouble of having to launch server manager and manually select the roles and features for now though I will cancel out of the export option and were returned to the add roles and features wizard to install the roles and features I've selected I'll click the install button server manager will immediately begin the installation of the DHCP server role and the Windows Server backup feature this should only take a moment or two but I'll skip to the end so we don't have to wait the installation is now complete notice that I've received a prompt stating that installation succeeded on server one you may also have noticed that on this occasion a restart of the server was not necessary although the majority of roles and features will require some degree of configuration after the install that's all there really is to installing roles and features so I'll close out of the add roles and features wizard and return to server manager if you would like to uninstall roles and features using server manager the process is very similar simply select manage from the top right corner of server manager and then choose remove roles and features from the drop-down list this will start the remove roles and features wizard when the wizard opens simply next your way to the remove server roll screen from here notice that the DHCP server role I installed a moment ago has a tick in the check box to uninstall the role simply uncheck the checkbox notice that when removing a role I'm also given the option to remove the role administration tools I installed earlier along with it to remove these features simply click the Remove features button with the DHCP server role now deselected I will click the next button on the remove features screen I will locate the Windows Server backup feature and were deselected as well having deselected both the dhcp server role and the Windows Server backup feature I will next my way to the confirmed removal selections page to remove the roles and features I will click the remove button at this point the wizard will start the removal process this is likely to take a moment or two so I'll fast forward the video so that we don't have to wait the removal is now complete that's all there is to removing roles and features with server manager however notice on this occasion that are being asked to restart server one to complete the removal I'm receiving this prompt because I did not select the restarts the destination server automatically if required check box so I'll reboot the server and return shortly the server has now finished rebooting now that we know how to install and uninstall roles and features using server manager I'll now demonstrate how to perform the same task only this time using Windows PowerShell first of all I will open PowerShell by clicking the start button and were searched for PowerShell from the Start menu search results I will right-click on PowerShell and we'll select run as administrator from the drop-down list this will open an administrative power shell prompt to view a list of roles and features that are available for installed I will run the command let's get windows feature when I press ENTER PowerShell will return a list of roles and features if I scroll up through the list notice that PowerShell makes no distinction between roles and features like server manager does it simply lists all of the roles and features in a single list you'll also notice that the list is divided into three columns the first column gives you the display name for the role and feature this is essentially the friendly name that we humans would use to refer to the role or feature the second column gives the name that Windows PowerShell uses to refer to the role or feature and the final column shows the install state for the role or feature if we look at the third column a little closer notice some of the roles and features have an install state of installed while others have an install state of available installed means that the role or feature is already installed on the server whereas the available state means that the install files for the role or feature are present on the server but the role of feature has not yet been installed to install a role or feature you will need to take a note of the PowerShell name before the role or feature from the middle column next run the command 'let install windows feature followed by the name switch then by the power shall name of the role or feature you want to install in my case this will be DHCP for the DHCP server role next I'll add a comma commas are only required if you're installing multiple roles or features if you're installing just one role or feature then a comma is not necessary I will then add Windows Server backup to install the Windows Server backup feature as well next I will add the include management tools switch this switch ensures that the graphical management tools for the roles and features are also installed and finally I will add the restart switch this switch instructs PowerShell to reboot the server if necessary as part of the install when I press Enter PowerShell will immediately start the installation again this would likely take a few minutes so I'll skip to the end of the process so we don't have to wait when the process does complete PowerShell were reports that the roles and features were successfully installed and that a restart of the computer was not necessary to remove roles and features using Windows PowerShell you should use the remove windows feature command 'let followed by their name switch and then followed by the PowerShell name of the roles and features you want to remove from the server in my case DHCP and Windows Server backup when I press ENTER Windows PowerShell verse starts to remove the roles and features this will take a short moment so I'll skip to the end when the command completes notice that I'm being asked to restart this server to finish the removal process since I did not include the restart switch as part of the removal command --let I'm being asked to do this manually so I'll restart this server manually using the shutdown command 'let with the our switch which stands for restart and the T switch which stands for time with a value of zero essentially this command luyt will restart the server immediately as soon as I press Enter the server has now finished rebooting and the DHCP roll and the Windows Server backup feature have both been removed that covers installing and uninstalling roles and features on Windows Server 2016 using both server manager and Windows PowerShell in the next video I will look at installing Windows Server 2016 with a server core interface and the reasons why you might want to do this I hope you've enjoyed this video from tech tips from will form or Windows Server 2016
