darkus possible timelines are the worst like that ultimate timeline where pop-tarts were never invented and also there's an evil alternate outside Xbox where everyone has goatees and the list videos only have six entries were these visions are bleak and bad alternate timelines crop up pretty often in video games giving us a gloomy glimpse of what things would be like if it weren't for videogame heroes always succeeding at sorting everyone's problems out consider these times when it was the darkest possible timeline and beware of spoilers for the following games [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] what if the story of America was not the one you knew revealing the nation or not of courage and of brotherhood but of greed and desire for absolute power even as the losers of the American War of Independence we Brits have to admit that things turned out pretty well after all without the USA we wouldn't have the Jimmy Dean chocolate-chip pancakes and sausage on a stick and then where would we be eating breakfast items separately and off a plate that's where Assassin's Creed 3 mostly recreated this period of history as it happened apart from the bit where every significant historical moment was attended by a surly teenager and/or his pushy dad well your best guitar it man you go I will watch the prisoners no you do it why me because I said so now go it's exactly the same when he hasn't tidied his bedroom but the Assassin's Creed 3 DLC called the tyranny of King Washington imagined a grim alternate history not where Britain won the war of independence but in which George Washington realizes that the only problem with being president is that you have to worry about stupid democratic elections far better to just name yourself King instead no highness some of the people are attacking the pyramid this is madness who sacrificed my entire life for them I love about him is how he hasn't let it change him naturally this all goes exceptionally badly with Washington marching across the land massacring people and generally being a bloodthirsty maniac instead of the level-headed military leader he was in the main game the obliteration of these rebels will be but a foretaste of the Feaster charm naturally Connor has to stop him via six to seven additional hours of Assassin's Creed 3 but what's intriguing is how the tyranny of King Washington is a historically realistic what-if scenario and its vision of what might have happened if Washington really had gone mad with power is totally plausible apart from the ghost bear apart from the ghost bear yes at the Dark Lord's command is nazgul now hastened to Mount Doom all other thoughts vanished from their minds they obey but a single deadly aim to slay Frodo and gain the ring now that it lies within this our arms cross the Lord of the Rings movies are great and all but if you ever found yourself secretly rooting for the bad guys and wishing that Sauron would just stride into the Shire and boot a bunch of hobbits faces off the Lord of the Rings conquest has he covered the main game was a faithful if rather dull retelling of the events of the film in which various dutiful people did inspirational things and also sometimes ruminated on the corrupting nature of power the Dark Lord compelled many into his service including Saruman a once great and wise wizard finish that do-gooder nonsense though and you unlocked the rise of Sauron campaign which asked what if Frodo didn't destroy the ring and instead hung on to it and then Sirhan's forces went absolutely ape then conquered the entirety of middle-earth the answer to that what if by the way is it would be awesome the campaign kicks off with you killing Frodo as a ring wraiths then moves on to you smashing up Rivendell as an orc and ends with you striding into the Shire and owning a bunch of hobbits before finally taking control of Sauron himself to give Gandalf a well-earned tonking hey guess he was just a conjurer of cheap tricks after all once you've truly doomed the free peoples of middle-earth all that's left to do is sit back and enjoy the happy ending history is no more for this happy race their hobbit holes are not to lose their party trees kindling and those who survived are now enslaved by the Dark Lord Sauron I mean happy for Sarah definitely not happy for anyone else at all Treebeard was in the end no match for the fury of the orcs he now serves as a bonfire into which halfling body's as feminine okay I get it game those who did not fight in this war shall now become the final victims their homes shall be burned and the future of their children shall be sacrificed upon sauron's cruel altar death and ruin are all that shall remain for the Dark Lord's cruelty will know no limits and in the end o shall be destroyed Wow okay it's time to feel a little guilty now and see why Peter Jackson didn't go with this for the theatrical release back before Disney bought Lucasfilm if a movie book or game had the Star Wars logo on it it almost certainly became part of the official expanded universe no matter how bad it was which is how Jabba the Hutt ended up with a son called stinky the Hutt but some things are too extreme even for the Star Wars Expanded Universe which is why the Force Unleashed downloadable content was all absolutely non-canon instead it explored an alternate version of Star Wars history starring the evilest version of The Force Unleashed lead character star killer and proposed various what-if questions the main one being what if everything's more specifically the DLC for both find a ray of light in all this unrelenting misery though the Force Unleashed OU's DLC did offer something that fans have always wanted to see Princess Leia in an honest-to-goodness lightsaber duel so awesome well it was good while it lasted I'm gonna go and watch the prequels to cheer myself up resident evil' operation Raccoon City was intended to be an intriguing alternate take on the events of Resident Evil 2 but then it was probably intended to be a lot of things like a good game for example instead it was a ropey low-budget third-person shooter wearing a Resident Evil Halloween costume operation Raccoon City allowed you to play as wolf pack which was an evil umbrella strike force with such imaginative call signs as vector and specter factor here good to see you sir also there was one whose real name was Hector no really the game also saw a welcome 2012 return of 1998 era Leon Kennedy back when he was picking up work on the side of the young Leonardo DiCaprio look-alike rather than the last time we saw him where he was literally the only half-decent thing in Resident Evil 6 he's canceled out by Jake Miller playing through the wolf pack campaign your mission is to capture annoying runaway child sherry Birkin and execute Leon Kennedy in a dramatic final confrontation are you doing this for umbrella what's in it for you succeed in your mission and Leon is killed in a heartbreaking poignant scene where you circle strafe around him filling him with as much small arms fire as you can until he falls over as if that wasn't bad enough once Leon is dead Claire Redfield also gets shot protecting Shari Birkin which adds yet another charge to Sherry Birkins many many crimes sorry we've got orders Phil he doesn't have to be the absolute worst of all the possible alternate timelines you can turn against your umbrella paymaster's and decide to let Leon and Claire live you aren't the leverage we thought you were umbrellas turned on us already it's time we stab them in the back what about Cherie keeper we've got other plans oh who are we kidding any timeline in which you have to play operation Raccoon City is already the darkest timeline [Music] it's fair to say that the post-apocalyptic future for Humanity imagined by the Terminator series is pretty bleak at the best of times nuclear fallout killer robots and I mean I can't see a Starbucks anywhere looks like we're back to making coffee the old-fashioned way hmm man I can't believe we just have to live like this throughout the entire Terminator series though even in this terrible irradiated wasteland there's hope hope that rests on these shoulders of one man with one incredibly boring name John Connor John Connor leader of the resistance what was Cyrus T laser punch already taken if not I'll have it nice third-person shooter Terminator three redemption mostly followed the events of the movie apart from one moment where it took an abrupt left turn into Bleek's Ville USA in it the Terminator you're playing as gets flung by the TX into an electromagnetic time displacement machine and sent to an alternate 2032 which is somehow even worse than the regular one in this version of 2032 both John Connor and his wife Kate Brewster have been killed humanity has been completely wiped out and presumably Skynet is just sitting around playing computer chess with itself you can tell this is the extra bad version of the apocalypse because the sky is red fortunately your plucky Arnold Schwarzenegger robot manages to send himself back from this alternate timeline hellscape to 2003 saving John Connor and ensuring the survival of the resistance leader for at least one war movie and its associated videogame tie-in all's well that ends well and hey could have been worse we could have been resting all of humanity's hope on this guy take this that weapon shoots armor-piercing projectiles it'll get you started I guess the ancient piece of wisdom look where you're going was lost during the apocalypse every recruit must go through a secret ritual we call the joining in order to become a Grey Warden the joining is dangerous I cannot speak more of it except to say that you will learn all in good time seminal 1995 romantic drama sliding doors was a cultural milestone for two reasons one Gwyneth Paltrow's hair iconic and two sliding doors became the go-to pop-culture reference for a defining moment in which the protagonist life can spin off in what turns out to be too dramatically different directions the Dragon Age Origins downloadable content called darkspawn Chronicles posits just such a sliding doors moment for your Dragon Age protagonist the Grey Warden only with less making out with John Hannah we're going to drink the blood of those those creatures those who serve either joining become immune to the taint in this case the moment in which your future splits in two is the one where in the original game you take part in the wardens deadly joining ritual step forward in the not darkest possible timeline you survived the ritual and go on to be an aerobic grey warden saving the world from the gruesome blight in the darkest possible timeline of the darkspawn Chronicles DLC on the other hand you die and everything goes to hell in a handcart don't even ice handcar like a bad hand car with a wonky wheel full of hissing snakes and the handle has splinters and the snakes all bite you who knew drinking darkspawn blood would be bad for you maybe leave it out of your green smoothies since your former Grey Warden hero has died off ritual you're now playing as a gross darkspawn monster complete the dlc like this and you're treated to a truly dismal finale in which your fav characters are fresh corpses and your lovely probable boyfriend from the not darkest timeline Alistair gets ultra murdered at least we still have John Hannah I haven't done anything well you must have done something or you wouldn't be here now would you you'd be out the lobby with your tentacle owner getting dressed up for the human show owner no one owns me gosh no owner you say well don't worry about it I'm sure someone will come adopt you before we have to put you to sleep in 1990s point-and-click adventure dev the tentacle the only thing standing between character purple tentacle and world domination is his lack of arms hey wait a minute I've got arms what if I did you never let me do anything fun anyway opt overcomes this not insignificant disadvantage at the start of the game by drinking some toxic sludge flowing from the lab of mad scientist Fred Edison growing the arms he needs to take over the world I feel like I could like I could like I could [Music] taken as such fred tasks our three teenage heroes bernard hoagie and Laverne with traveling back in time before purple drank the sludge so that they can switch off his sludge machine sadly that plan doesn't go to plan the teens are stranded across different time periods but it's Laverne stuck in the future who gets to see a chilling potential timeline in which tentacles have become the dominant species on earth enslaving humans and treating them like particularly talkative pets I have to go to the bathroom ha that's a good one imagine a human using a bathroom come on let's take a walk okay human do your business in this grim future humans have either been killed imprisoned or possibly the worst option made to compete in demeaning human shows in which they're judged on the quality of their hair smile and laugh lovely thankfully with both Bernard and hoagie in the past they're able to mess with the timeline to avert disaster which is one of the two times it's acceptable to interfere with history the other being stealing historical artifacts to sell on eBay why do you want to buy it then no thanks to this historical meddling the gang is eventually able to turn off the slug dramatic and restore humanity to its rightful place in the pecking order and everything goes back to normal
