7 New Raspberry Pi CM4 Boards for 2021!

in december i posted a video about ten new boards based on the raspberry pi compute module four well it's only a few weeks later and i found seven more boards that i just had to share and i think the last one especially shows a lot of the potential for the new compute module four that is if you can find one for an update on when they'll be in stock check out the video i posted a few weeks ago linked in the card above me now getting to the seven new boards first up is definitely the cutest of the bunch it's the cutie pie it's a well-rounded portable raspberry pi tablet with a handle the completely open source board design includes audio processing with a mic power management for a battery a gyroscope and a few exposed gpio pins the final product will have an 8 inch touchscreen a 5 hour battery and includes a compute module board so it's an all-in-one portable pie targeting a price of 229 not bad at all and i love that they open source the hardware design read more about it at cutiepie.io next up i found a much more industrial carrier board from mcu zone which is the smallest mini pci express based board design that i've found so far this version looks intended primarily for telecommunications use with a 4g wireless card but there are a lot of creative things you can do with a mini pci express slot and speaking of mini pci express there's another really neat little board i found that's being built for a two drive homemade nas the cm4 nas mini pcie by github user olvint it's almost as small as the mcu's own board and it's intended to be used with a tiny little sata card instead of a full size card like the other nas board i mentioned in my last video moving on chalk this next one up in the totally unexpected column the tiniest two-port gigabit ethernet router build i've ever seen using a dual rj45 jack from link pp sorry one jack uses the cm4's built-in ethernet chip and the other uses a usb 3 to gigabit ethernet adapter chip this solution uses a usb 3 chip on the pci express bus which should be perfectly adequate for speed and latency a side benefit of this usb 3 design is two additional fast usb 3 ports that's nice to have if you want to add fast external storage for a little nas and if you want to build a custom router or vpn this kind of board might be the perfect design i'll actually have more on that kind of setup with open wrt soon so subscribe if you're interested in my first cm4 board video i mentioned an open source micro atx carrier board for the compute module which is still being designed well ross nicole's decided to go another step down in size and design a mini itx carrier board meaning there will be another option for building the pi into a full desktop arm based pc the board has pretty much every possible connector exposed and even includes an internal sata port though the port is tied to usb 2 so unless you use a pci card you're going to get a slower hard drive speed than what i got in my sata raid nas video my favorite feature on this board is the full size 16x pci express slot it makes it a lot easier to physically plug in larger cards even if they run a little slower on the pi's 1x bus i mounted the original turing pi cluster in a mini itx case and it's nice and tidy compared to most atx or even micro atx cases the overboard is listed on indiegogo and the target price is around 140 us dollars it should be available around september this year but who knows with hardware designs next up if you think the router board i mentioned earlier was small check out this board it's the cm4 ext nano which is literally as small as the compute module 4 itself even though it's tiny it still crams a ton of features in that space this board could be used to build a tiny pie camera project with a fast pi 4 processor or to install the cm4 into a tiny space without having to design your own board check out all the board's features on its github page and i had to save this last board for the end because it really knocks it out of the park for design and execution i found this reddit post by the inquisitive engineer and for a second i thought it might have just been a picture of some mass-produced pie handheld because it just looked so good but no this device which is fully functional was completely hand built by daniel juckett as a coveted side project it packs in the official pi 7-inch touchscreen full gaming controls 2-4 hour battery life and a custom 3d printed case here's a picture of the custom pcb daniel put together and you can see the cm4 down here on the right that copper bar is a heat pipe leading from the system on a chip to an exhaust fan the handheld should be able to keep the pipe nice and cool even when it's playing demanding games the controls are run through a teensy lc board that makes them look like an xbox 360 controller to the pi and you can see the little teensy over here there's also stereo speakers dual vibration motors and just look at this thing it's quite a package and like i said it's fully functional it can play all your favorite youtube channels and like i said it has built-in speakers let's listen in and hear how good they sound on the i o board it may not look like much but she's got it where it counts but since it's a 1x slot it doesn't give a whole lot of bandwidth and you could use bluetooth if you get a wireless cm4 model or go old school and plug headphones straight into the jack on the top the audio even goes out through a mini hdmi port on the bottom if you want to play on a tv and if you're wondering how big it is here's a size comparison with a nintendo switch it's a little bit chunkier weighing in at 1 pound 9 ounces or 0.7 kilograms for our friends across the pond it's 27 millimeters thick at the top and 21 millimeters at the bottom the controls are basically the same as the ones on the wii u gamepad which are pretty good daniel demoed zelda and donkey kong country 2 using retropie an os tailored for playing emulated games using emulation station retro arch and other tools if you're familiar with eta prime none of this is news to you games run well and if you want you can use the pi as a portable tablet like the cutie pie since the official pi touch screen is fully functional and you have all of raspberry pi os running underneath and just for completeness daniel sent me a few more pictures of the hardware on the back you can see ventilation holes and the rear trigger buttons the bottom has a micro sd card slot a mini hdmi port so you can play on a connected monitor or tv and a usbc port which is used to charge the battery or run the pi connected to mains power the top has one of the most unique features i've ever seen on a handheld gaming device a built-in gigabit ethernet jack other than that i thought the case looked too good for something 3d printed but apparently daniel and his brother went through six different versions of the case before settling on the final design and his brother sanded it down and painted it with multiple coats to give it a really polished look and before you ask in the comments if it can run crysis well assuming you have a separate pc to run crisis technically you can here's a demo running doom eternal over moonlight on retropie which lets you play a game from a pc over the network on the pi and it looks like there's minimal input lag so it's perfectly playable and daniel also demoed deus ex mankind divided it seems like there are a few other options for streaming too like steam link but your mileage may vary after seeing all this i'm just floored by the fact that someone can build a device with all this functionality in just a few short months from what i read on reddit daniel used about 200 bucks and parts to build it though that doesn't count all his time and engineering work it's amazing the possibilities when there are boards like the compute module 4 available and if you're wondering why it's still hard to get one it's because there are a lot of other people and companies who think the same thing i do they're building amazing new hardware based on the compute module 4 and i can't wait to see it daniel's cm4 handheld is likely to see some improvements like an upgrade to usb 3.0 and maybe some other tweaks and he intends to open source the whole design after he finishes a few more tweaks i'm excited to see other people build their own handheld devices based off of his so what was your favorite board am i missing any exciting new compute module projects i'm trying to post
