7 CRAZY Transforming Wheels

we have seen real designs which range from spherical drives to mechanism wheels which can sideshift an entire vehicle some of the best builds out there actually instantaneously transform the wheel and this pushes the limits of engineering so let's look at some of the most amazing designs and begin the top countdown there are a few hybrid drones out there which can transition from ground to air but this particular machine from the university of minnesota is impressive it has a highly compact configuration which can protect its hardware when it's driving with its two wheels once it's ready for flying a single actuator unfolds the four border arms tilts the robot 90 degrees and engages the four propellers this allows the robot to roll into tight spaces and then fly up onto ledges at a relatively high speed but unfortunately this is just a research project and it's not ready for the market just yet and number six the darpa rwt one of the more impressive wheels out there stems from cm university natural robotics engineering center it is a tracked wheel which works as a conventional tire but it also can instantaneously form into a track triangle this allows the vehicle to transverse from hard roads to soft terrain it's still unknown how long this type of wheel would last for as its actuators would probably be the first components to break down so the design will probably not make it to commercial vehicles anytime soon once again this project was funded by darpa and they have come up with a lot of different strange things by considering that they have created the internet well i wouldn't put this wheel to bed just yet at number five the quattro tro bed there are tons of amazing robots out there which can transform into different states but this classic robot stemming from taiwan university has to be one of the more impressive vehicles with a simple command the wheels split in half and full backward to form c-shaped legs it includes a 6-axis imu and a ir sensor to measure ground clearance it has 8 motors for driving 6 sensors for the leg wheels and 4 motors for switching between the legs and the wheels so even though it's a little bit older it's still one of the more complicated platforms out there a new kind of wheel makes the vehicle its slave by utilizing different forms of locomotion it has a fully integrated full motion planner which generates feasible plans over varied trains so it can leverage the efficiency of its rolling locomotion through benign sections and then transfers tricky areas with lagged locomotion the wheel is actuated by a high torque dc motor and the legs are actuated at the hip and knee this is a fairly new kind of thing and another robot which takes advantage of wheels and legs is the annie mole i have covered this robot before and they can drive up to 13 feet per second once again it can switch from walking to driving by using a motion planning microcontroller this in turn controls the torque in each wheel and maximizes control so unfortunately we not only have to worry about basic robot dogs but now we have to worry about ones which can go faster than us as well wheels can only get you so far in one dimension so this crater has come up with an amazing idea using pneumatics this allows the nami nukaz robot to walk straddle and even climb walls this transforming bipedal robot can attach to any hard surface with vacuum cuffs it basically sticks one end to the ground and then heaves itself in the direction it wants to go the robot can also carry tools to draw paintings or even pick up objects as far as versatility this robot is pretty high end and the builder broke down the entire build on his website so make sure to check out that link in the description moving back to full-sized vehicles there is a new type of weird wheel which can transform on the fly after years of research the team has come up with a real working prototype which can adapt to a variety of terrain constructed from a flexible composite membrane they are designed to fold like origami thus retaining a high degree of strength laser-cut aluminum panels hold most of the membrane together but the durability of this platform is yet to be seen so it might not be on your next car but it definitely could be more suitable for robotics or even off-roading [Music] many real concepts out there are very intriguing and some are just a bit unrealistic but one of the more extreme designs stems from goodyear it is a two-in-one tire designed for autonomous flying basically it drives on the road and then it transforms into a propeller for flying but it also seems to ignore how much surface area a propeller needs to provide lift without spinning at near light velocities i'm sure this is just a fun project for goodyear but this could be possible with a cyclo rotor which can reverse in rotation on the ground this cycle car is already a prototype which can transverse in the air with this propulsion system and it could be possible to advance this concept into a hybrid car but i would like to know what you think about this idea so let me know in the comments section we have seen a few travel it is a foldable wheelchair which can save up to 60 percent more space so that it can be stored in an overhead compartment on a plane or in the trunk of a car the wheel itself features a central hub and six folding aluminum structures that double into an interlocking section a locking mechanism keeps it all in place the first prototype should be ready for testing by 2022 and the
