some players such as lionel messi and cristiano ronaldo are consistently excellent throughout the course of their careers others such as mark noble or leon osman are consistently average from start to finish and some like carl henry and simon walton are consistently rubbish throughout the start middle and end of their careers those types of players are all boring though so we're not interested in them today no no no instead we are turning our attention to a norfolk handful of players who had careers that were generally speaking anywhere from subpar to good with the exception of one truly outstanding season take someone like marcus stewart who outscored the likes of michael owen and thierry henry for ipswich town in the 2000 to 2001 premier league season but only ever scored six top flight goals outside of that single campaign i know wild to be clear with regards to the wording i am not necessarily saying that these players were average some were very good and some weren't but rather i am saying that they had what could be deemed as average careers in relation to truly great players with the exception of a single season and obviously the term world class is a fairly ambiguous one but i think i've set a pretty high bar for inclusion hence why even marcus stewart misses out i've left out more obvious examples like rocket santa cruz michou and amizaki who you'll tend to find in other one-season wonder type lists in favor of some more interesting inclusions or i thought so at least so enjoy here are seven average players who had one world class season marco negri getting us off to a sensational start there is some symmetry there between the start of this video and marco negri's start to life at ranges which was more than just sensational brought to ibrox for 3.5 million pounds in the summer of 1997 as walter smith looked to retain rangers's scottish premier division crown i'm not even sure if i know of a player who has ever enjoyed such a remarkable start to life at a new club in his first 10 games rangers negri scored 23 goals and yes you did hear that right the italian scored in every one of those 10 fixtures which included him scoring all five of the club's goals in a 5-1 win at home to dundee united negri ended the season with an incredible 37 goals from 40 appearances of which 32 came in the league from just 30 appearances which was enough to win the division's golden boot title rival celtic signed their own center forward that summer but the useless swede henrik larsson was no match for negri only managing to muster up 16 league goals at celtic park had negri stayed fit all season rangers would surely have won the league but unfortunately midway through this season negri had been hit in the eye by a shuttle struck by his teammate sergio perini which resulted in a dislodge retina negri wasn't actually out for all that long returning after laser eye surgery but when he returned he had difficulties with his peripheral vision it was almost career ending for a penalty box player and negri only scored two more goals four rangers despite spending another three years with the club following his comeback he kept playing until the age of 34 with a string of injuries and only managed to score a fleeting flurry of goals during a brief spell with lavorno but for about six or seven months marco negri was the most lethal centre forward on the planet and was without doubt world class clint dempsey i suspect this may seem initially like a bit of a road call but just hear me out clint dempsey was obviously a very capable footballer given the fact that he spent more than six seasons as a regular starter in the premier league and won 141 caps for the united states which puts him among the top 60 or so most capped male players of all time when roy hodgson was replaced by mark hughes at fulham though the american found himself playing much further forward getting in and around andrew johnson and even running beyond that brought an improved goal tally for dempsey as he bagged 13 goals in the 2010-11 campaign but the following season would be something else in a fulham side that enjoyed scalps against the likes of liverpool and arsenal that season finishing ninth in the premier league dempsey scored 17 goals in the premier league alone and 23 in all competitions the only players to outscore him in the premier league that season were robin van persie wayne rooney and sergio aguero that is quite some going following his exploits that season dempsey was transferred to tottenham for a fee of just 6 million pounds and 12 months later he was back in the mls dempsey had a decent season at spurs and was great for seattle sanders but given the level he was playing at in 2011-12 that season was simply something else fun fact the summer that dempsey left fulham liverpool offered the cottagers jordan henderson in a swap deal for the american which was accepted only to be scuppered when henderson refused to leave anfield i bet they're glad he did now graphics alright now we're getting serious if you strip out the obvious names messi ronaldo neymar suarez etc graffiti's 2809 season of wolfsburg is among the best seasons that a player has had during my lifetime graffitch had enjoyed a couple of impressive seasons prior to 2809 scoring 22 goals in 53 games in his last full season at sao paulo followed by 15 goals in 38 games in his first full season in europe playing for lemon his debut campaign in the bundesliga saw him back a respectable 12 goals in 28 games as wolfsburg finished fifth but no one could have predicted what was to come following a season playing alongside strike partner edingeco just clicked for the duo under felix mcgatt and both players enjoyed truly wondrous campaigns graffitch was the star scoring a remarkable 35 goals in just 32 games meanwhile gecko struck 36 times in 42 outings graffiti won the footballer of the year award the bundesliga player of the season award and the bundesliga golden boot whilst gekko came second whilst gecko continued to score goals prolifically in the bundesliga then in the premier league with manchester city and in syria with roma and now at into milan graffiti only managed 11 goals in the bundesliga the following season and though he would score 20 plus goals in a season again that was only in the uae pro league if you get a minute at the end of this video check out graffiti's incredible solo goal against bayern munich from that season if you haven't already seen it you won't regret it and try to get the partridge-esque english commentary to beat and then you know just watch a load more hitc sevens videos kevin phillips kevin phillips was a very good goal scorer throughout his many years in the game even on loan at crystal palace in the championship when he was on the verge of turning 40. from the non-league game to winning eight caps for england phillips scored plenty of goals for the likes of watford southampton and west bromwich albion but there was just one season during his time at sunderland in which phillips reached another level having scored 23 goals to fire the black cats to promotion to the premier league the previous season never having played in the top flight before there was much anticipation to see whether phillips will be able to make the step up he did a fair bit more than that in his first season at that level philip scored a truly remarkable 30 goals in 36 premier league games comfortably outscoring the likes of alan shearer andy cole and sierra henry phillips didn't just win the premier league golden boot and the premier league player of the year awards though he also won the european golden shoe that season making him the only englishman to date to have ever won that award philip struck 14 times in the premier league the following season which was a very respectable tally but in 99 2000 he really was a force of nature salvatore skill actually sometimes when you hear non-italians talking about salvatore scalachi you could be forgiven for thinking that he belonged among the pantheon of all-time great italian center forwards alongside the likes of sylvia piola gigi riva and paolo rossi in one respect he does and that is in terms of his contribution to the italian national team at a world cup scalachi only ever actually won 17 caps for italy and he only scored seven goals for his country of birth it just so happened that six of those goals came at a single world cup a world cup that italy hosted no less italian 19 would become a very memorable world cup to a number of people for a number of different reasons but one of the most iconic images of the tournament has to be salvatore scalachi with his arms outstretched celebrating scoring for the hosts with those big intense eyes skill actually only made his international debut a couple of months before that world cup began fresh off the back of his one fantastic season skill actually scored 15 goals in 30 games for juventus at a time in which it was notoriously difficult to score goals in syria he started the tournament as a substitute but after scoring off the bench he earned himself a starting berth going on to win both the golden boot and the golden ball as italy bowed out in the semi-finals skillachi's second most prolific syriac campaign saw him score just six goals and whilst he would score goals for fun at one of the club that club was jublo iwata in japan who i hope won't mind me saying that in the mid 1990s at least was not quite on a par with the level of syria or the fifa world cup javi moreno the summer of 2000 was a significant one in spain as luis figo made perhaps the most controversial transfer of all time from barcelona to real madrid meanwhile barcelona brought in mark overmars the ariel sand prolific argentina star martin palermo and valencia welcomed pablo imar from river plate of all the star power in spanish football last season though only two players namely brazilian superstar ronaldo and romero captain raoul outscored a little note forward starring for the division's minnows alabas javi moreno had been with olives since 1998 but he had only managed eight goals in two seasons with the club prior to the 2000 to 2001 campaign but that season moreno came alive he scored 22 la liga goals helping alavez to a top 10 finish as well as six goals in only eight games in the uefa cup as alavez reached the final where moreno scored twice against liverpool though his side still lost 5'4 following a golden goal in extra time a summer transfer to ac milan fallout who managed to outbid barcelona but moreno only managed two goals in 16 games in his single season in syria similarly underwhelming spells with atletico madrid bolton wanderers and rayal tharagoza followed with mourinho only rediscovering his shooting boots in the segunda division with cordoba reflecting on his post-alaves struggles moreno very admirably and very honestly considered that quote you need something extra to try for the club like that and i probably didn't have it i'm not ashamed to say it but maybe it was all too much for me end quote danny guiser we're staying in spain for top spot and a compelling case could be made for me having saved the best until last daniel gonzalez-gwaiser better known simply as danny gwaizer is the man who has featured before on this channel not all that long ago as part of our series taking a look at former stars who now play at a really low level since quasa is still going strong in spain's regional leagues at the age of 41. nearly 15 years ago the spanish international found himself in rather different surroundings gwaiser was someone who always knew other goals he scored frequently for majorca's b team as a youngster but first team opportunities were fleeting it took moves to mercier and getafe where grazers scored goals in the first and second tiers of spanish football but former yorker saw the error of their ways and brought their former reserve team forward back to the club gwazara paid that faith scoring 29 goals in his debut campaign in the 2007 08 season including 27 in la liga a tally that made him the division's top scorer well clear of the likes of luis fabiano sergio aguero raul david villa and rude van nessary gwaiza was linked with a string of european giants that summer but he ended up signing for fenerbahce a supposedly easier league in which to score goals than la liga though gwizer wouldn't find it out to be that way he still scored goals but nothing like the 29 that he notched in a single season former yorker before making moves to malaysia paraguay and in more recent years spanish football's lower leagues so that is it
