so it's mocktober again already somehow where we cut apart mock toe boots all through October and this is the third year we've done moctober which is pretty crazy so thank you guys for all your support and so for this October part of it we're going to be cutting through a few alternatives to one of the most famous Moc toes of all time the Alden Indy so we're starting off with one of the most affordable Alternatives made by the company who made the leather jacket the Indiana Jones wore in those movies or Harrison Ford wore in those movies so we're going to cut in half run through our test to see if you can actually get a decent Alden Indie alternative for a fifth of the price would a famous grave robber actually wear these on their adventures and are these actually wearable boots or are they just costume boots and so who is this company well it's the wested leather company and to give you a brief history of them 45 ish years ago we don't know the exact date probably around 1978. Peter bought right made the decision to create his own leather specialist firm called leather concierge based in England then at some point they moved to wested Lane in Kent and changed their name to wested leather company and then in 1981 Raiders of the Lost Ark releases and like I said they made the coat for that that movie and that helped them grow the business and also get their foot in the door in the movie prop world because since then they've worked in some pretty notable movies including Harry Potter Pirates of the Caribbean Star Wars the original series Star Wars I believe that the first the one two and three uh several James Bond movies Saving Private Ryan the Alien series Mission Impossible Thor the Dark World and The Fifth Element so pretty good uh roster of movies they've worked on and they've also worked on quite a few other projects including stuff with the Royal Air Force museums and other Enthusiast groups and since the invention of the internet they've been able to sell some of these prop style products to Consumers but that's the big question of this to me is this just a prop where it's not supposed to be worn or is this actually a decent Quality Boot and thanks to the Rose Anvil Claude wallet for sponsoring this video because this is one of my favorite walls it's the one it's the very first one I designed we launched it on Kickstarter like six years ago raised like five thousand dollars and that was like the first time I was like oh I might be able to make some money doing this I named it after my grandpa Claude because he's the one that taught me how to do leather working and I love this design I think it's a smart design obviously I designed it but the way I designed it was this back pocket it rolls over instead of being sewn together like the front pocket so that way your front pocket stays really tight and small so you can keep your one or two most used cards in there whether it's your ID your credit card your Sam's Club membership card and in the back you have a lot more room to stuff more cards without them getting super tight because of that rolled Edge and we use the the highest quality American tan veg tan leather by Wicked and Craig we hand sew every single one of these two needles on either end of a single thread weaving it together in a saddle stitching technique that they literally use on Saddles and that's why Saddles are so strong and durable and repairable same technique with this no sewing machines so check these out the link in the description and wait till you guys see what we've been cooking up with the neck strap I can't show you quite yet because it's not finalized but it's so sick and I think you guys can be really excited about it because it's really unique and I've been working on this neck strap design for like three and a half years and we finally have a design I'm hyped about so check these out be the link in my description and sign up for the limited edition email list to get alerted for when that next trap drops and thanks again to roseamble for sponsoring this video so what is this boot like I said it's made by the wested Leather Company the style is the Indiana Jones Adventurer boot they weigh one pound seven ounces they retail for a pretty affordable 152 dollars and we don't know where it's made because it doesn't really say anywhere the the brand is in England but for that this price I doubt they're made in England I think they're probably made um somewhere some foreign country probably China somewhere along those lines based off the price I don't know it's hard to we tried reaching out to him but they didn't reach back out to us so I don't know where it's from and the way that they position this product is These Boots Are handmade and built to complement the film costumes we have to offer at an affordable price we think they're the finest handmade leather boots on the market a great price for a hand finished leather boot that once worn in will become your everyday go-to boot so it kind of seems like they position it as oh this is a costume boot but it's one of the finest handmade leather boots in the world at 150 bucks and allegedly you can wear them every single day so now start looking at these materials to see what this boot really is starting with the leather first because this leather is it's pretty similar to the Alden leather because they has that heavy pigment on top which is basically a really thin layer of paint and so that's to give the leather an even finish the only downside of that is if you really scratch and beat them up instead of re-coloring the leather you have to basically repaint the leather to remove any scratches but it does give you a nice even finish and as for the quality of the leather we looked at the cross section it looks like it has some pretty loose fiber structure the the leather looks really empty it doesn't seem like there's a lot of oils and conditioners worked into the leather and just the foaminess of it tells me that it's a little bit cheaper of a leather especially compared to the Alden leather which is tan by Horan so even though it's not my most favorite leather because that top layer pigment the core of the leather is still a better leather than this leather and as for the thickness it's 2.2 millimeters thick so a little bit thicker than the alden's and we ran the puncture test on it and took 88.5 pounds puncture through so pretty average so it's a very average leather it's not terrible it's not great the biggest flaw with it is it's just a very foamy and dry leather so between the two the alden's clearly have better leather but this leather is pretty on par with a 250 dollar under boot style then if we look at the inside the real aldens are fully lined with the really nice calf skin whereas the West dids they are also fully lined but it's it's not as good of a leather it's a really heavily finished what I think is pig skin it does have what seems to be elastic layer on top because we burned both the leathers and they acted very differently so I think it's just a little bit of a polyurethane coat on top and the problem with those really heavy Coatings is it doesn't absorb your sweat it doesn't breathe nearly as much and it's probably not going to be as durable because every time you see one of these really heavy plastic Coatings a lot of times they've used an inferior cut of leather and disguise it with a heavy plastic coat to make it look higher quality but once again it's not a horrible leather it's just about what you'd expect from this price range maybe 250 and under we've seen worse Linings even in like I think it was Tony Lama boots had a similar style of lining and they're like 250 350 bucks so not bad so far from the leather and one thing I do really like is they spent the time on the inside to take that internal counter cover and flipped it and made it flesh out so it's going to grip your heel a little bit more it's going to prevent that heel slip and it's not going to wear out as fast because it's that more durable flesh side flipped out then if we look at the inside of the boot you can see that it is fully leather lined for the insole and it's a non-removable insole but I think I can probably just peel it out we can see what's what it is and what's underneath another we'll give you a little ASMR sounds so that was pretty easier to remove you might not want your permanent insoles to be that easily removed you can also see there's a pretty shoddy on where they're placing this this little latex foam layer underneath it's kind of got some spots that they've missed not that big of a deal because it's so thin but this is the exact same leather they use in the line ink and so I think it's a pig skin it's it's not horrible but it's not a great Leather by any means then underneath you can see that it is lasted the lasting board is a fiber board so once again pretty common for this price range and the flaws with this is it's just not going to last as long as leather it's it's similar to leather because it's got a fiber structure because it's essentially a really thick hard compressed piece of paper but over time it delaminates and separates and can lead to splitting but for 150 boot you you rarely rarely see a leather insole for this price range compare that to the alden's and you get a half sock liner with a similar latex foam heel pad rather than the full length and instead of fiberboard the alden's have that split leather insole then the next question I had is does this thing have a shank so let me just do a little on-screen bin test see if I can the shank yeah I can there's definitely a shank in there but I I think I can bend it out of shape even without cutting in half maybe not it might be a sturdy enough shank but there's definitely a shank in there which you definitely want if you're going to be an adventurer you want that support across that little Gap there so if you're climbing around on stuff or just for supporting the arch of your foot so it doesn't collapse in between that little Gap caused by the hill and as for the construction how this boot is built it looks like it's a 360 Goodyear welt construction and one foolproof way to check that is if you just pull the upper leather away from the welt if you see glue a lot of time that's a fake welt but if you see stitches on the inside of there that's a usually a real Goodyear welt so if we look at this one you can pretty clearly see it's all glued together so I'm willing to bet this is not a true 360 Goodyear welt it's probably just a cemented boot but the weird thing is you've got these stitches on the outsole so I don't know if those are faux stitches or if I'm wrong and this is actually Goodyear welted which for 150 bucks it's pretty rare to find a true Goodyear welted construction with a leather welt like this one seems to be but it's you can still find them so I was hoping that this was a Goodyear weld because that that's one thing that's going to be very different from the alden's to these the alden's are that true Goodyear weld construction it's a 270 whereas the cemented construction it's a lot cheaper it's more affordable to make it's not as repairable it can split easier it's not as durable so this that's a significant difference between the two that and the Really shoddy like stained job where they've stained all the threads that as for the remaining bits the outsole looks like it's a pretty thick hearty outsole it looks really similar to the alden's where it's that core infused rubber but if it feels it feels a lot softer so it might not be a solid chunk all the way through so we did the puncture test and it only took 69 pounds to puncture through so I'm willing to bet it's not a solid outsole all the way through I think there's a lot more fake things going on with this boot that it looks like and so now let's cut this thing in half find out the truth because that claim of these being the best boots on the market and being able to wear them every day it's already not true so let's see what's on the inside [Music] all right [Music] foreign [Music] we got them cut in half and so let's see what's inside [Music] so pretty disappointing honestly because on the inside this outsole is it's got a ton of voids in there and the reason they do that is they'll claim that it's more squishy and it's lighter but really all it is is a way to save on rubber because this is essentially a sneaker outsole disguised as a boot outsole and I thought for sure that this welt even though it was fake was made of real leather but it's just leather board so it's where they take all the loose remaining leftover leather fibers from splitting leather grinding them up they reconstitute it with some sort of binder and then they make what's called leather board which is essentially just a way to use the word leather in a component material so that people think it's leather and it someone looks like leather but without the majority of the benefits of leather and once again that's not crazy for 150 boot you know even the thorough Goods that are twice the price of this still use a synthetic welt but the other thing that is a little bit obnoxious is that that Stitch is 100 fake on the outsole so you know it is it is somewhat of costume boot but there's still a lot of like BS features on this thing so now I'm just let's try to rip this apart see if that Stitch is actually fake and see how hard it is to rip oh oh that's a problem with these cemented boots you just never really know how strong they're going to be we can do that to your boot not a good sign so yeah you can see now that those stitches do not go through on the outsole this is clearly a fake welt because I can probably just pull this off too like that and there's your internal components so not a great sign so it has a fake Goodyear well fake outsole stitching but to be honest it's not crazy for 150 bucks there's a lot better boots out there for the price that are cemented or fully traditional so is it worth the price not really there's a lot better boots out there and unless you just are really looking for a cosplay boot or a really cheap Alden alternatives to see if you even like the style I could see you buying it but for the most part it's a very expensive costume boot you know if this was not associated with with Indiana Jones I would expect this boot to sell for 100 bucks you know that's it still feels a little inferior for 150 would Indiana Jones actually wear these boots he might in the classroom but if it's the Indiana Jones is actually going out and doing Adventures these would probably last two or three weeks before they completely fell apart and then to the final question is this a decent Alden alternative for one-fifth of the price it is not I would not recommend getting this boot for Anything But Costumes and as for how it ranks on the moctober board it's the only one up there so it's number one for now and as for the overall board for the last three years here's how it ranks so let me know what you think and what other Alden Alternatives you want us to cover because there's a good amount of them out there and there seems to be a need for a better price Alden alternative so thank you guys see ya [Music]
