so last Thursday I had an opportunity to go spend some time with my dad and help him do something he's dreamed of doing for years so what are we doing today dad going after a car what kind of car 35 Ford where's it at Marshall Michigan yeah now obviously our family has always leaned towards General Motors products Chevrolets especially so you may be wondering why we're going clear to Michigan to buy a 35 Ford dad and I spent the next 4 and 1/2 hours talking about that very topic you see in 1935 Henry Ford himself was 72 years old and the 1935 Fords were one of the last cars he helped develop Ford sold over 820,000 vehicles that year with 237,000 of them being two-door sedans selling for about $500 but there was one 35 Ford two-door sedan in particular that made a lasting impression on my dad when he was a child the car belonged to my dad's great-grandfather this particular 35 Ford was in an accident in 1958 and was total after a rear end collision occurred when my dad was about 7 years old it was the first car that my dad ever felt a connection with even though he's never had an opportunity to drive one dad has always wanted another 35 Ford just like great grandpa cases a deluxe two-door sedan with a flathead Ford V8 and last week he found this one approximately 100 m west of Detroit Michigan the car has had a full frame off restoration but has a documented 52,000 original miles and the fully restored mohair interior looks feels and smells exactly the way Dad remembers it when he was just a boy especially the back seat I can lay down on it and go to sleep while the interior definitely brings back a lot of memories for Dad the interior wasn't the most important part of this car what brings back the most Vivid memories was what's under the [Music] hood the 221 cubic inch flathead Ford V8 had a sound all of its own the Flathead Ford V8 was first introduced in 1932 it was Henry Ford's answer to inclining sales of the Flathead 4cylinder powered Model A Ford which was losing market share to Chevrolet who was producing six-cylinder inline engines that were much more powerful and much smoother although Ford Motor Company wasn't new to V8 engines the Lincoln line of cars had V8 engines for years the problem was they were expensive and very heavy Henry Ford tried a lot of different designs but by March 9th 1932 the first flathead Ford V8 rolled off the assembly line what do you think at that pops we took a few minutes to listen to the old Ford run and let it warm up and then it was finally time for Dad to take the test drive he's waited for for 65 [Music] years [Music] after a quick test drive around the block dad brought the car back made a deal I loaded it on the trailer and tied it down for him and we started making our way back towards Ohio dad was pretty tired by the time we made it back to State Line I think all the excitement wore him out wow is that beautiful holy cow this would be the nice nicest old antique car he's ever had that's what he told the guy up here he's like usually the stuff I bring home is junk wow he's never had one like that's nice are you happy with it oh yeah yeah so you grew up in a car just like this Yep this same year I idal identical I'll be darn I wasn't going to buy one that wasn't identical right it's as close as I could come when I saw in the pictures I thought it was black funny blue col yeah like a real deep blue yeah once we got the car back to my house I untied it and unloaded it for Dad and parked it in the driveway there's one little problem with this car and we'll get to that later in the video but for right now dad's just happy to have the thing home safe and sound by Friday morning I was back on the road again for another 4 and 1/2 hour drive one way not to Michigan this time to Morgantown Indiana Vicki and I along with the kids are headed to Brown County Dragway for war in the woods this race has become one of the most popular and most well attended no prep races for small Tire cars in the entire country the event kicked off Friday evening with hard tire and big tire classes running first small Tire would run the first two rounds on Friday night and anyone who lost first or second round were welcome to buy back in to a second chance race on Saturday we would find out soon enough who that would be after the national anthem it was finally time for everybody to find their spot along the fence and grab a bite to eat at the concession stand and get ready to Buckle in for the next two rounds of some of the Wild to small Tire racing you'll see anywhere in the country out of the this race was sponsored in part by strange engineering and since I don't get a chance to talk to these guys in person very often I sto by the booth to pick up a new hat and check out the display of their new stainless Evolution disc breakes that have affectionately become known as hot boy breaks thanks to Jimmy Dale although Billy went out first round against Frankenstein and small Tire Tommy made it all the way to four cars in the Falcon and Billy managed to win the second chance race in his Nova while we were all having a really good time over in Brown County my dad was having a good time back at home driving to 55 around on Saturday there was a local car show and antique tractor show in our hometown of P Tas a show that my dad actually started back in 2001 dad hung out and visited with people for quite a while and then it was time to get back in the 55 and head home unfortunately we haven't had time to finish installing the Vintage Air kit in the car but it's at the top of my priority list of things to get done once we get home and get everything cleaned up from our trip to war in the woods we made it back home late Sunday afternoon and managed to get most everything we needed unpack out of the trailer and then first thing Monday morning me and my two Associates decided to take Vicki Suburban straight to the car wash before going down to visit Mark at A1 Auto pars to pick up everything I need to finish up putting the air conditioning on the 55 as well as the new electric wiper conversion kit what are you doing come to get my wiper stuff oh got it all put together did you no I can't put it together until I get my wiper stuff oh you can't no oh okay well I got it what do you think about that I don't know we'll find out when we go to put it in I guess hey also I need a wiper motor circuit board for that 97 Suburban out there oh okay the wipers are on the fritz they're on the fritz no wipy huh well sometimes wi kind of wipy once I managed to get the Suburban cleaned up and picked up my parts down at marks I came back the shop to check in on the guys and see what the plan was to finish hopefully getting this vintage air kit installed in the 55 today so what' we come up with on this condenser line situation well uh we called Mark and he's able to make us some lines because our hard lines where we had to move everything forward for this kit they're not long enough to go through our template to Lo everything in so I called Mark and he said get everything mounted where we want it and he's able to just make us a set of custom lines okay cuz this radio radiator okay so this whole situation was designed so that the radiator set behind the core support like a v8 car but we moved it to the front like a six-cylinder car to give us more room between the fan and the water pump so now all our ac lines are yeah they'll move that for so that's much too short basically right so Mark's going to make us all new lines whatever we need right correct just mount everything wherever we want to put it and he'll make it work yep that's what he said I see you got the mirror put on yeah that went all good that's really nice that car hasn't had a mirror on the driver's side door since um I don't know 1977 no no actually probably 1980 about 1980 that mirror got knocked off up in the garage at Mom and Dad's and it hasn't had one on it since but the dash light still aren't working have you got anything figured out on that I know the tack works I got the tack figured out this is ground wire came off but none of the dash lights work like one turn signal indicator works and that's it so I don't know what's going on with that I'll have to look at that shortly after I got back to the shop my phone blew up with a 911 call from Uncle Bob all right everybody so while Robbie and Kenny are back at the shop working on the 55 I got a text message from Uncle Bob that he's needing some more parts for those engines we're building up at the Machine Shop needs a distributor for small block forward made some oil pan studs I don't know there's a there's a whole handful of things here that I've just texted Uncle Terry at jigs that we needed and I just got a hold of Terry here a little bit ago and he said he's got everything right here at 11th Avenue so I jumped into Malibu and I come in here this afternoon try and pick up some parts and I'm going to try and make it up to Bob's either today or tomorrow uh I was planning on trying to go up here today unfortunately I think I've got a meeting with a contractor uh at the shop this afternoon I don't I don't know we'll see what happens but let's run in here and see Uncle Terry for a minute well well well looky here Uncle Terry's already got everything bagged up and the distributor for bil's Ford only problem is I don't see Uncle Terry anywhere there you are here I am I came into your little station here and I see all my stuff's already bagged up and ready to go go I already got it Road up all you got to do is sign my life away sign on the dotted line do you have a good weekend I had a good weekend not as good a weekend as you guys said I had a good weekend Friday was a little rough a lot of drunks uh a lot of people trying to help me hold the car and a lot of people stomping their muddy feet all over the track and tracking mud out and just I've always said that I don't I mean you can actually see better from over here you don't need to see right here yeah Friday was rough I about lost my up there on the starting line Friday night on a couple people but I can totally understand Saturday was better yes yeah Saturday was a good day yeah Tommy Whitted his way down to the last four cars in The Big Race yeah Billy got a tough draw he took uh he had Frankenstein first round first round and um he lost by a car he broke second round yeah they they had a problem second round so so Billy lost Lost first round and then bought into the second chance race right and won the whole thing won the whole thing weeding through theine at the end of the eighth month yeah I saw some pictures of it shoots are dragging behind it and the front wheels are still in the air front wheels are still in the air awesome and everybody giving you high fives when you're going down the return R yeah that was my favorite part of the whole weekend awesome all the crap was worth it just for that yeah was cool well well well look who it is hi hi everybody how's Miss Kimmy today good good yep all right well I guess we'll bag up all my shiz Nets here and head home bagged up all you gotta do is pay all I gotta do is pay are you paying for me today Miss Kimmy no not today did you see Addy's car yes sir I did pull the wheels on the street on worn out and I mean worn out for free 27560 radio oh is that that set that you gave yeah I got for nothing put them on put them on there pull the wheels on no I mean some Road some Road out in Lin Mexico yeah Mexico it was inico yeahmy again that's pretty awesome yeah yeah she's got to be oh she was happy well she riding with you then yeah she red with me holy cow I didn't even do a puddle burnout I just stopped and just cleaned the tires off real quick and she was in the car with me wow and I hit it and it did it again wow man that's awesome gbody cheat codes gbody Che sheet codes so that brings us to Tuesday and unfortunately we still don't have the 55 project finished yet but we're definitely getting closer so where are we at on this project Robbie I'm down to getting the wiring and the little actuators put in the stock uh heater controls I'm really excited about that I thought maybe it would have like a completely new heater control head but it's not it doesn't it's actually really cool to to go into the stock heater controls that's really cool it's going be pretty NE pretty excited about it actually I got to run up to Bob's today and drop some parts off the machine shop and take some video up there so I'm going to go up there and see him and holler at me if you need anything with this call Mark if you need something should be pretty good oh I got to get these where we had to bypass for the old heater cork CU it was leaking I'm going to get that hooked up now before I put the the rest of the battery box and stuff in right right um and then I'm just going to try to tackle this wiring and I might run these lines down the Mark here in a little bit and have him Crim them for me all right I'll see you after a bit all right between building our new shop out back and all the different projects we've got going on right now it can definitely feel overwhelming at times thankfully we haven't been tearing anything up so instead of continuously working on trying to keep our race cars running we've been able to Branch out and start some new projects we've always wanted to do and pretty much keep Bob busy full-time working specifically just for us as of right now there's three different small block chivies one small block Ford an LS engine and also a 6.4 Hemi for Tommy and Allison all that stuff's keeping Bob pretty busy both on the phone and in the shop today he's been busy Port matching an intake manifold to Billy's trick flow heads on his small block Ford and trying to finish up the 427 small block shivy giveaway engine that we're thinking about testing in my no now that we've pulled the 383 out of it and we're getting ready to put it down in the giveaway S10 what's going on Uncle Bob lots of projects waiting on parts now we've got Parts they're everywhere and we're going to finish putting some of this stuff together and be able to start it on the dyno and break it in and um do some testing and so you've got this thing back together this is the 383 that we tore up in the Nova the valve train flew part right but we didn't know where the Rings were gapped at for Boost like we just we didn't really even plan on racing it right so when we took it apart the other day you went ahead and checked the Rings and what did you find they were gapped uh a little on the loose side for an oem type situation they were what 24,000 yeah 24 25,000 you know on that size of boore that's not bad that's they ought to be in the 16,000 range so 25 were a little loose I I left them alone Al um the Pistons were were great shape um I didn't see anything wrong with it when we took it no the crank I polished it up uh put new bearings in on it new main bearings in on it with polished crank and uh we got short back short block back together um now we just need to make a decision on what we're going to do with Cam and I was a conversation we just had is is is what we go here on top side so I can get organized uh so I would say probably just put a set of those lifters that we get from Nolan at isy those Johnson esy lifters let's put a set of those good lifters in it we'll upgrade the valve train new push rods of course uh better rocker arms probably put a stud girdle on it and a bigger cam shaft in it because I think the idea is to put this in that little blue S10 and I'm not sure what we're going to do yet I think we're going to boost it either Twins or single I'm not really sure I haven't had time to talk to Billy about it yet but it's definitely going boost so the ring Gap is fine for that fine yep yeah so that's really good yep what else we got going on here we got Billy's wsor yeah um just looks like you've been working on gaskets and Port match and and intake to those cylinder heads are out it's out there in the tank you can take a picture of it uh there's quite a bit to be removed on that and then that'll be finished and now we got the cam shs for the giveaway engine yeah I seen those those showed up short block is together um this is the 427 yes sir and it's going to have the same basically the same hydraulic roller that's in my Malibu and it's out there on the Shelf I seen that I seen that and um so now we're can we can really start making progress yeah and I got the heads over there that I'm going to check for spring pressures I saw isy sent valve springs too yes that's thank yes thank you guys thank you Nolan very much and also we got a new mailing timing chain for that two of them we've just got stuff going together everywhere up here y that's what you wanted yeah uh the uh cam shaft for tomies uh we reordered it they shipped it on Friday I should have it here in a couple days uh the cams that we had here that we thought we might work didn't turn out to be what we wanted or liked okay and I spoke with their tech line at isy which is very good and um they've helped you out quite a bit they have they have I I found someone in a tech department that I that I can communicate with On My Level which is pretty low and uh they uh they he did Rod did a real real nice job and so uh uh but that should be here end of the week so we'll get that thing put together the next couple days and hopefully go to the dyno excellent and U so we're going to dyo it on gas uh right off the bat but I'm going to bring my 950 E85 up here and we'll dyo it on that too right I got to get it back from Sebastian it's on his pickup truck right now I messaged him on the way up here and said hey I might need my carburetor back here pretty soon now that we've got Parts flowing in yep I want to make sure I got all my ducks in so this brings us to Wednesday we're still working on the 55 and we're still trying to get cleaned up from more in the woods Kenny's out there power washing Billy's duy and I've got a little project of my own I need to take care of today I want to get Dad's 35 Ford cleaned up and take it to the upholstery shop you remember I mentioned we had a little problem with the car well this is it the soft top on the top of Dad's 35 Ford didn't quite make the trip home on on the trailer some air got up underneath of it and blew the back of the soft top out completely destroying not only it but the headliner as well as soon as we got home I made a phone call to some friends of mine that have an upholstery shop down in Buckeye Lake and since the weather's kind of crappy this week I'm literally trying to dodge raindrops and get this 35 Ford down to the upholstery shop without getting soak and wet I drove the Ford and had Kenny follow me in the Malibu so he could bring me back to the shop just in case these guys decided they can help me with the car sometimes it can be difficult to find someone interested in working on old cars like this luckily they were able to make room for me in the shop and allow me to bring the car in and plead my case they're pretty busy right now mostly working on boats and Street Rods so their schedule's full for the next few months but I want to get Dad's car straightened up for him so he can at least drive at the rest of what's left of this season and enjoy it before we have to put it up for the winter I'll get out of your here and let you guys get busy get back to your work I really appreciate you guys working me in cuz this is a a situation where my dad went and bought this last Thursday and the top didn't survive the trip home and I want to make sure it gets taken care of I don't want to let any Critters or anything get inside of it and I don't want anything to happen to that interior no problem safe for you thank you guys thank you so that brings us to Thursday what feels like day 365 of the 55 Chevy air condition in Project unfortunately we've run into a couple little snacks I need to have one line custom made for the air conditioning I need a jam nut that fell off the power steering pump and I think I've successfully diagnosed the problem with the dash lights I figured out what the hell's wrong with my dash lights what Kenny blew the fuse out what how did he do that I don't know how he did it but whatever that fuse is I just gave you yeah give me one double the size well I don't know about that I'll get you the right one is sounds like he had a extra sparking or something going on in I don't know what the hell happened all I know is my dash lights don't work and that damn fuse that you've got there in your hand yeah that's up underneath the dash and you can't hardly get to it I got tangled up with my bib overalls in a shifter last night I was mad as hell well this is an original Factory fuse right here I'm pretty sure cuz had Al the time reading the number we got it though and I need this hose crimp too oh right there on the dotted line on the dotted line all right we can do that Robbie was very specific that this line had to be crimped just right or else it would never work on the car Rob will raise holy hell if you don't crimp that in the right spot you think so I guarantee it well I'll be careful jeez I swear it's a lot of pressure especially when it comes to AC fittings I don't know why now I moved it it took Mark a few tries to get that fitting in the machine and get it set in there just right so that when it's crimped it comes out at the exact length that we need it so that it fits on the car otherwise they be making another trip I told him if he didn't do it right he's going to have his ass oh for sure oh he got it on there it's on the mark not only did we get our custom air conditioning line made but the dash lights are fixed in the 55 and the missing Jam nut on the power steering pump has been replaced although all the turn signals and brake lights are working the turn signal indicators in the dash are still inoperable so I sent out a text M message to the only guy I knows skinny enough to get up underneath the dash this 55 so that we don't have to pull the instrument cluster back out of the [Music] car well well well look who it is fixing fat guy messes Uncle buckwheat did you start pulling vacuum on this yet not yet what I'm trying to find an extension cordin this [Music] hole is it pulling vacuum yeah it'll pull vacuum we'll see if it holds as long as that needle doesn't come off that PIN for about another 45 minutes you're good to charge it if it works you guys put it together so so now what leave it sit overnight and wait for some pre-own in the morning I'll have to go up to archives and see if I can find some of your missing parts that were there for but now they're not somehow some of the sockets that hold the dash light bulbs are missing what kind of cour you getting today what you working on oh too much as soon as Jeremy walked in marks he started catching Flack about this Jam nut that he didn't tighten on the power steering pump months ago what what why was my name brought up I for what I didn't say nothing that was that was thing one was telling me he's like yeah your brother piss name mentioned I didn't I wasn't privy to the whole thing but I just know your name is mentioned about something happening and you might have been involved that sounds like a bunch of hor well I don't know I'll take that up in there meanwhile the AC got trouble yesterday too so I don't know what what he did how do you get in trouble well he's I don't know he can't he's it's that filter thing he's gotten that he he just things just start flopping out of his mouth then he yeah so it and then it's like oh well there we go you better get to work CU yeah I know Kenny just told me the AC leaked down and told me it was at 30 well it's not my Crim it's negative 30 he sent me a video and it's pointing at30 told bucko is30 he told me it needed to be on zero so he argue back and forth when I sent him a video he got confused not me I one way other way it didn't move I'm thinking it's good after picking up a fresh tank of 134a at marks he came back to the shop to charge the air conditioning on the 55 well well good morning sleeping beauty I haven't been asleep I've been in there editing watching these stupid clips of you down at marks rumbling and rambling about nothing at all I hear about you trying to pin me for your missing nut yeah the power steering pump nut fell off the pulley you didn't tighten it I didn't tighten it yeah you didn't tighten like 2 and a half months ago when I even handled that exactly who put it on you who put it in and put the belts on your squirrels is this thing ready to charge yeah well then let's get at it so finally today's the day we're finally going to find out whether this vintage air kit is going to blow Ice Cold Air or find out whose fault it is if it doesn't the old 55 fired right up and Jeremy turned the air conditioning on full blast next it was time to open the valve and wait for the compressor to kick on within just a few seconds we had Ice Cold Air Conditioning blown out of the vents on Dad's old 55 me and Jun pup hopped in the car backed it outside and took it for our first test drive to make sure that the engine doesn't overheat with the AC on and make sure that the air conditioning works as it should [Music] [Music] all right squirly what you got for me not very much thank God so we're staying home this weekend yeah we're staying home and everybody's been asking about the shirt orders and they are on their way the shirts have been loaded on a p and they Beed tomor for you and we're going to start sorting and shipping all next week so so if you've ordered one of the Malibu shirts that don't hate the player hate the game shirts they should be on their way early next week yep they were pre-order so it takes a little time but uh yeah so um and you have until October 8th so you have another week to get your shirt if you want to uh have a chance to spend a day hanging out with us yeah oh joy so yeah tell them about this again like we're giving away an opportunity for you to be flown in here if possible if need be whatever and you're going to hang out with us for a weekend or a day or whatever and you're going to get an opportunity to drive my Malibu yeah and hang out maybe I'll make beef and noodles maybe I'll make some cookies we'll hang out now wait a minute we're not going all out like that are we yeah yeah like it's the whole experience like we'll probably take them to see T-Mac at Jegs and Market A1 and Bob at the machine shop maybe yeah like a normal day in the life which includes usually beef and noodles too and if you're lucky you might get bit by June pup no she'll be on her best behavior no she won't all right so this video is already like 20 minutes long or 20 tell everybody what we are doing this weekend we're staying home and we're working on the barn yeah so we're going to try and start getting the thing ready to put the uh insulation and the wire down and I got a guy coming up from Cincinnati to help us put the PEX line in for floor for the heated floor yes so we got to you know Ohio weather we have a small window of good weather left so we've got to really Crunch and get the concrete in and stuff so that's what we're working towards all right so that's it thanks for watching everybody good night thank you sorry it's been a while since we put up a video it's just been really hectic and there's a lot going on and I wanted to take a little extra time on this video for my dad good night
