hey this is ernesto and today we're going to talk about a plug-in that will make your mixes sound better neutron 3 by isotope if you're not familiar with isotope they love to have their plugins talk to one another all across your session so you can get a better mix master or just better sound in general i love and use just about everything they make but it's taking me some time to really embrace and understand why their plugins are a game changer so to help you here are six of the best ways to use neutron 3. all right i'm so excited to share these neutron 3 tips with you here's the first one start your project with the visual mixer in mind i know it's weird that i'm starting with visual mixer this is usually something that happens like at the end of mixing but i think if you don't start off with it in mind man it kind of ruins visual mixer all i mean is to put on relay all across your session and realize a really simple like it's pretty much like a a tool or utility plug-in that just has like your volume some panning some width control and some other extra features here so now what i do is this if i have volume automation going on i go i'm on bit wig here and bit wig has something called tool i think on ableton this is essentially called utility and i'm sure every doll has something like this where you can control the volume in so what i do is all my volume automation i mess with here in my tool if i'm messing with the volume overall instead of using this fader slider here i use relay as like my fader slider so now all you really got to do is put on relay all across your session except for this is what i recommend not putting on things like one shots so one shot like this i don't want visual mixer to be paying attention to that because this is just like a one shot it's a one-time thing i like visual mixers to be listening to things that aren't just one shots i'd rather have it on things that are instruments or vocals because those are the things that really need the most time and making sure the volumes are right so i'm going to come back to visual mixer at the end and just show it in action and use and show how it just adjusts all the volumes across the board and it's going to be pretty interesting i don't know how well it's going to work but it usually does a pretty good job here's the second tip mix assistant is pretty great i think it does such a good job at getting clarity in uh in your mixes so let's listen to this loop here [Applause] [Music] so it sounds like that and notice that this thing is already kind of clipping my limiter is like at zero gain and it's just already already clipping but what's interesting is that visual mixer is going to listen to all the stuff and bring down like all the levels so that it's like makes sense i'm really surprised at how it does but i'll show you that later okay drums let's listen to this little loop [Music] all right pretty simple but let's see what happens when we add neutron 3 and have some mix assist going on this is really simple to use just click mix assistant make sure you're on track enhance next and then what you do is uh you can if you want you can just go auto detect and allow me trying to figure out what kind of sound it is i like to help out a little because helping me out a lot so i'll go to percussion and i'll hit drums because you have a full drum loop here you can select what style you want warm will favor the low end up front gives you more of the high end balance is a balanced sound and the intensity is how much processing happens always keep it at balance and medium intensity click next and just let your audio play let's go to what's doing is that it's listening to it it's adding in some processing and giving you something that it thinks is a good starting point so i'll bypass it [Music] yeah so i like what it's doing it's not doing a whole lot and that's fine this loop already sounded quite good as it was but sometimes when you add on mix assistant when it does this thing uh what i'd like to do is like go across these modules here all these modules and just see if i can make it just sound a little bit better what neutron3 is always doing is getting to a good starting point and then you just got to use your own ears and your own judgment to kind of you know take it the rest of the way so here's something else that i really love about neutron 3 which is a sculptor tool it's really great so i'm going to do i'm going to place it on these cords here and i'll explain what it does so first things first once you put the sculptor on you gotta tell it what kind of instrument it is so i'm gonna say synth and a pad [Music] so what's happening here this line that's like dancing and bouncing around um neutron calls it i'm gonna and i quote neutron calls it like an army of compressors and eqs that sweetens and fixes your track so since we told neutron 3 that it's a synth pad it's going to be adapting to the sound of it and making sure that it has just the right tone the right sculpted shape [Music] so one thing i don't like is what it's doing to the high end i don't like that it's dipping out this area a whole lot so what we can do is drag this little slider so we're telling sculptor to ignore what's happening in this grayed out area just to focus right here [Music] great i think i like that a whole lot better and then we have these three settings right here this first one is affecting the strength of your sculptor so zero nothing's happening see how it's just more extreme having a bigger effect on it and this tone is going to affect um how bright or how bass heavy heaviest sounds bring it down it's gonna favor more of the bass low end pretty high it's gonna favor the high end [Music] and the speed is how quick it reacts it's just the attack and release of it [Music] great [Music] sometimes i find sculptor like really making a big difference like drastically different i'm like so grateful for it sometimes it's a bit more subtle just depends on the sound source you have and if it's already in a good place or not alright moving on to our next tip is this number four masking detection it makes it really easy to eliminate masking neutron just does a really good job visually showing you where some masking can be taking place and what masking is when there's two sound sources where there's some frequency overlap and those that frequency overlapping may be causing some clashing might make one sound like uh dulled out or something like that um it's usually it's not good and what neutron 3 does it just makes it really easy to see what's going on so we're going to take a listen to my vocal chops here and uh these chords [Music] all right so because they're kind of uh in the same frequency like there's a potential for some masking going on so what i have i have a neutron 3 unbox my vocal chops here and then on the equalizer this is where the masking detection takes place so what you do is click this little drop down and say hey listen to my chords and in the neutron here and then this what we're going to do is like we're going to play it and we're going to see if there's any masking happening so these orange lines here means like that's where weak masking is going on and then when you get these lines i'll bring in some sensitivity a whole lot these lines mean like hey a lot of masking is happening right here but that's what the sensitivity way all right so let's take out some of this masking potion mask in here so one thing you can do is you can flip between each eq so right now we're on the eq the vocal chops click this right here we're now looking at the chords [Music] okay so after you like adjust it after you start to try to fix the masking what i like to do is click bypass eqs and see if there is a difference that's made [Applause] [Music] okay i'm gonna be honest there's a very subtle if uh anything like there's no difference it's really really really subtle and sometimes that's what happens when you use masking this thing with like any plugin any tool you have to decide if like if it's making a difference if it isn't then just get rid of it it's just not going to be helping you out if it doesn't make a difference of course keep it which is my fifth tip which is you know still use your ears whether you're using like the track enhancing the mix assistant or the the masking detection you have to be using your ears and asking yourself like is this making a difference is this is this uh making it better or worse just because neutron 3 is telling you that it might be better or whatever you still have to decide if it is or isn't okay let's go to our visual mixer now and see how we can make this sound more balanced it sounds bad like the drums i think i was way too loud that's what we're gonna do we're gonna see if visual mixer can fix this thing okay visual mixer here we go so all you need to do click mix assistant this is telling you how to set it up one thing to really know here is that i think this is something that's really easy to overlook which is saying to leave your daws volume and pan set to default uh because that's what makes visual mixtures gonna handle so once again what i was referring to here like making sure that these little um like faders are just not touched and just leave them at a default i have them at zero unity here um no panning is happening because visual mixer will take care of that so once you uh get past this right here this is asking you to uh click which ones here do you want do we want them to focus on so i like to just click relay on all of them instead of the neutrons so after you tell visual mixer which sounds to listen to you then have to decide which um which sounds you want neutron 3 to focus on so for us we want our vocal chops to be what is focused on and then just go listen to it just play your song from start to finish great so now we'll give this our results here and then listen to it [Music] [Applause] and notice how it got a lot quieter remember at the beginning when my limiter was like peaking like crazy now it's not and that's something really cool with visual mixer it knew that all these sounds combined is just way too loud so it like brought everything down a whole lot so now i can use my limiter to bring back that volume and have that control there great so i think that's a really good tool that neutron3 provides i feel like visual mixer gets you like 65 of the way there in your gain staging and then the extra 35 percent it's just all based off your um your ears and uh using a reference track and measuring your song off of theirs okay so here's the last thing i want to bring up which is this i want to show you what i think is the best way to buy neutron 3 because neutron 3 brand new is really expensive okay so i'm on the isotope website right here and check this out right now it's like black friday season right now when i'm filming this thing but if you go on neutron 3 like standard or advanced here you'll see that it's originally a 400 free advance 250 for standard even elements is 129 or 129 which i think is ridiculous it's really really expensive if you really want to be uh cheap like me uh what i like to do is on plug-in boutique every month there's like a free plug-in that they will give to you if you just buy anything on blogging boutique even if it's like a dollar cheap crappy plug-in you'll receive something for free and sometimes neutron elements is one of the things that you receive for free so what i'll do is i'll buy like something that's literally like a buck on plugin boutique and then i will get my neutron elements for free which is great and then once you have that you're able to get like loyalty crossover bundle prices uh and that will give you access to standard in advance for even cheaper than that or it even gives you like access to bundles for a cheaper price if you have any of the products i know excellent really sales in winnipron 3 i just think it's really great i don't know check it out i think it's amazing and if you already own it hopefully you'll figure that out too okay if you're really impressed with what neutron 3 can do then you'll probably be interested in access to a brand new reverb neoverb right now it's my favorite reaver plugin to use and you can find out why by tapping or clicking the video here thanks for watching i hope i can see you again in the future later
