hey guys this is thomas from nurse money talk and in this video i'm going to go through and i'm going to show you some of the great nursing specialty options that are available to you as a new grad nurse now make sure to stay till the very end because i'm going to at the very end i'm going to give you a range of how much money you should expect to be making as a new nurse before i get started on that i want to go ahead and invite you to make sure to hit that subscribe button and that notification bell so you do not miss any of my upcoming videos and if you find this video helpful don't forget to give it a thumbs up because that really does help this channel grow and make sure that this video gets out to more people now let's go ahead and get started with the number one on our list which is working as a med surg nurse now the thing about med surg nursing is that it's for the most part considered like the gold standard and some nurses are very very particular that they feel like that should be the only specialty that all new grat nurses should start in now as you if you've watched some of my other videos you probably know that i disagree with that and i'll put a link up top to a video where i go over that in much more detail but all that aside while i don't think that you have to start in med surg i do think that med search is without a doubt still a really good option for a lot of new nurses to start in especially if you're a new grad who isn't quite sure yet if you know what specialty or what area you might want to go in the beauty of med surg nursing is that it gives you like a very broad very broad range of exposures i mean you know some of the some of the things you'll be doing in in med surg nursing is going to be pretty applicable to a lot of different nursing specialties so for instance you're going to be admitting discharging and charting on patients you're gonna be monitoring patient conditions um you're gonna be giving you know giving meds you're gonna be operating equipments like iv tubes feeding tubes um you're gonna be doing a lot of different procedures like you know obviously starting ivs uh you know gonna be doing some some wound care as well but like i already mentioned the beauty of med surg nursing is that you get like such a wide wide range of of exposure to a lot of um patient complications a lot of disease processes i mean just some of the things that you could get exposed to in that surge you would include diabetes pneumonia sepsis uti copd renal failure the list goes on and on if you don't quite know yet what specialty you would like to start in then definitely make sure to give medical surgical nursing uh a look number two is intensive care unit nurse or icu nurse now as an icu nurse you're gonna be dealing with some of the sickest patients around i mean if you think about it well if you didn't already know the icu is pretty much like like the highest level of care you know so if you work for for example in med search and you had a patient that got super super super sick and so um at that point they might they might figure well okay the that the patient is requiring too much they're gonna move them up to a high level of care one of the one of the level of carers that they're going to look at depending on how sick the patient is is going to be the icu in the icu you're going to be treating and dealing with really sick patients you're going to be dealing with advanced medical procedures and equipment like a ventilator and you're going to be providing a lot of emotional support to families because unfortunately in the icu a lot of patients will not make it out of the icu it just comes with the territory as i already mentioned you're going to be dealing with a lot of sick patients and just to kind of give you an idea of the type of disease process you'll be dealing with according to the society of critical care medicine some of the most common reasons why patients are admitted into the icu includes respiratory failure acute mi intracranial hemorrhage percutaneous cardiovascular procedures and of course sepsis number three on this list is emergency room nursing now as an er nurse you'll be responsible for pretty much dealing with whoever and whatever walks in through that er door um unlike some of these other specialties that i've talked about already like the icu nurse or the medical surgical um nursing area like in those two fields you're going to be getting report and so before your patient comes up to the icu or to the med search flow you probably have a good idea what the patient's issue is what's going on and kind of like what you need to do but when it comes to the er nurse a lot of times you just don't know now of course if they're coming from uh you know coming you know via ambulance you know you'll probably get some report from emsa but if you think about um a lot of the other scenarios where a patient just walks in through that er door you just you don't know what's going on you don't know if it's a patient that's been shot you don't know if this patient has been stabbed maybe it's a patient that has a metal pole sticking out of their arm like who knows it could also be that um you know since the er since as an er nurse you're not always going to be dealing with gunshots car accidents you know it could just be a patient that just has a minor cut minor bumps minor bruises or a patient just having issues with allergies part of the way i like to look at the at kind of like the er nurse and kind of like what the er does is that your goal is to do rapid patient assessment triage them um see what the patient needs where they need to go afterwards um if if you know if you if it's something that can be taken care of right then and there you're going to take care of them then you're going to send them out out the door or if it's something that requires hospital admission admittance then you're gonna stabilize and then they're gonna be transferred either to a med surg floor or to the icu so number four on my list is labor and delivery nurse now as a labor and delivery nurse some of your job duties will involve assessing patients in triage for either pre-term labor active labor um you know maybe their water broke maybe they're having some pregnancy complications you'll be responsible for for maternal and fetal assessment you'll be assisting in delivery and you know like like a lot of nursing um nursing specialties um education is going to be a very key part of this as you'll be educating um you know moms and dads of what's gonna happen um you know when they first get in there while they're in labor what's happening during and then what's gonna happen afterwards especially in you know especially when it comes to topics like breastfeeding or postpartum care number five on my list is operating room nurse now as an operating room nurse you probably already guessed it you're going to be working in the operating room you'll be responsible for taking care of of patients either before during or after surgery um some of the things that you'll be doing will it's just kind of all over the place depending on on the facility you work at but the you know the the kind of like the bare minimum will include charting gathering and prepping of equipment that's needed for the procedure and also education a lot of education is going to be involved in this particular specialty the next one on my list and actually the last one on my list is number six which is psychiatric nurse now as a mental health nurse you'll be responsible for assessing monitoring and addressing any mental health or behavioral issues that a patient is having some of your responsibilities will include giving meds therapeutic communication will be a huge part of it right next to active listening and ensuring that the patient has a safe environment now when a lot of nurses think of this field when they think of the mental health the psych specialty especially if they've never worked in mental health a lot of them a lot of nurses will think that there's no medical care that's that's being provided in this specialty and it's it's just not not true as as a psych nurse especially depending on what facility you you walk you work in you're going to be dealing potentially with actually a lot of sick patients because because the thing about it is that it's not just healthy patients like like healthy medically stable patients that have mental health issues or mental health problems or diagnosis no you have sick patients patients who have a condition such as diabetes asthma [Music] you're going to be treating um drug drug detoxing alcohol detox opioid detox you know the condition a patient could have when when they admit him or try to get him admitted could be you know it's just gonna vary across the board i've had patience because i have worked in mental health i've had patients who who's been on iv which makes things kind of interesting if a patient is under suicide precaution but that is a is a story for a different video i've had patients who have come in with very very severe burns that have actually required um you know like a lot of wound care routine wound care at that and so what you'll see in mental health will vary like it will vary across the board um just depending on the facility because i've worked in a couple different facilities specifically for with mental health and i've noticed that it varies across the board and it also varies on on how um on how desperate that the er department is to actually create bed space now i promise you a look at what range of salaries you can potentially get as a new grad nurse and that is coming up but before i get to that though i do want to mention real quick that if any of these jobs are interesting to you and you would like to apply or at least see if if any of those jobs are available in your area make sure you check out nursemoneytalk.com forward slash jobs to look at our job board and to start applying for jobs and if you don't see a job available take note that if you scroll a little bit lower down the page you'll actually see a box there where you can actually fill out your information actually start getting job alerts so check that out it's nursemoneytalk.com forward slash jobs now as for the average salary you can expect as a new grad nurse i need to preface this by saying that that this is just averages which is why i'm going to give you the average and also a range because as you'll see this is going to vary wildly depending on where you're at some states some cities just pay a lot more for uh just pay a lot more to nurses than than other states or cities do so definitely keep that in mind as i go through this now the median salary for a new grad nurse so this is at the 50 mark you're looking at about 64 681 a year now this chart is from salary.com so if you do want to go um check it out and and see it for yourself i'll i'm i'll have it on the screen as well so you can so you can look at it so that's the average like i said sixty four thousand six eighty one the bottom 25 will get about fifty eight thousand twenty one the bottom ten percent will make about fifty one thousand nine seven as you move up the the top 75 will make about 73 941 and then the top 90 will make 82 371 as you can see that is a huge huge range there's a lot of things that can skew what salary you're gonna have starting out but as i've already mentioned a big part of it will just be the state in city that you live live in so if you want more specific details on how much you'll make in your state then you'll definitely want to i'll put a link in the descriptions where you can go and you can get more details about um about trying to find what your salary will be in your specific state but like i already said but like i said this is a huge range so it you know it covers a lot of different variables so you'll probably end up fitting somewhere within that range let me know what you what you think about this list like do you agree with the uh with the specialties on this list is there one that you disagree with is there one that you think that that you are hoping would be on the list let me know in the comment sections below thank you so much for watching this video don't forget to hit that thumbs up and i will catch you very soon in that next video
