hello everybody and welcome back to my channel so today i'm going to be telling you 50 things that i no longer buy to live a more sustainable lifestyle as well as save some money in the process i saw a few people do videos like this especially the minimalist sustainable youtubers i thought it would be fun and interesting to make my own version of it as well because there are tons of things that i used to buy very very often and now that i don't buy or even own any more since becoming more sustainable and i guess more minimalistic i definitely wouldn't go as far to consider myself a minimalist just because i like a lot of certain things such as um plants as you can probably tell from my background and just other things i do like to live a more minimal lifestyle though i do like to have items that mean something in my life instead of having clutter and junk everywhere so yeah also all of these items that i'm mentioning are very personal to me and just because i don't buy some of these items does not mean that you don't have to as well just want to put that disclaimer out there because i saw some harsh comments on some other people's youtube videos about this topic and i just did not want to deal with that so just wanted to put a disclaimer out there that not having these items personally works for me and my lifestyle and may not work for you so yeah anyways let's just get straight into the video so i put the items in two categories i'm starting off with personal care beauty and fashion item number one that i stopped buying or do not own anymore are disposable period products i probably quit these a year ago or so and instead of using the disposable period products i use a menstrual cup i decided to make the switch because i try to live a more low waist lifestyle don't consider myself zero waste just yet but i do want to hit that point one day hopefully in the future disposable period products produce so much waste in the environment and a lot of them contain plastic which as you may know does not biodegrade and only breaks down into harmful microplastics which go into the waterways and harm the environment animals and even people so i decided to completely cut out all its disposable period products and switch to a menstrual cup if a menstrual cup is not your thing there's other options such as reusable washable pads period underwear and i'm sure there's other reusable products out there as well that i did not mention number two is nail polish if you told me four years ago that i would not be wearing nail polish i would think you are crazy but i just don't really feel the need to have my nails done anymore that's mostly because i cook all the time and then i have to wash the dishes and then i also have a food garden and i always found that nail polish just completely chipped away within like three days and i honestly don't have the patience to paint my nails every three days and wait an hour or two for it to dry this kind of goes with the nail polish thing as well but i do not purchase manicures or pedigrees and i actually used to get acrylic nails quite often or do my own like fake long plastic nails at home and this kind of coincides with my zero waste low waist lifestyle as well because as you may or may not know acrylic nails are plastic and once again plastic not the most eco-friendly material at all and i'm sure you cannot recycle acrylic nails so they're just going to end up in the landfill just kind of contributing to microplastic pollution and i'm not really about that so yeah don't really purchase manicures or pedicures i just kind of take care of my own nails at home now item number four is pretty personal to me specifically but i don't really use any skincare products anymore except a zero waste sunscreen so i think i suffered with acne since seventh grade because i saw one pimple pop up and then i got an acne face wash to get rid of that pimple and then i noticed more acne kept on cropping up and then it just kept on getting worse and worse and worse and worse for years and years to come and then probably about seven months ago i decided to quit all skincare products and i mean i tried every single kind of skincare product high end low end drugstore sephora and all of that my acne just started getting worse and worse and then like i said i quit all skincare products and it's just kind of gone like i'm not wearing any makeup right now my skin is pretty clear still not perfect but way better than it was when i used skin care products i of course i still get pimples and stuff but nothing like i had a few years ago i could insert some pictures of what my skin looked like when i used some skin care another thing i don't use is hair conditioner this is pretty personal to my hair as well i tend to have more oily hair and skin and i find that my hair feels exact same of when i use conditioner and when i don't i just use a shampoo bar or i also use plain products zero waste shampoo another thing i don't use is a ton of hair products i used to always use hairspray hair serums dry shampoo and those products like make me break out on my chest and back and i found once i stopped using them it didn't really make my hair any better or worse and i didn't get any more breakouts so once again pretty personal to me i just don't find i need any of those products if i do find my hair getting a tiny bit dry i'll just put a little bit of castor oil or argan oil or something like that at the ends another thing i don't buy is makeup um once again literally if you told me four years ago freshman year that i would not be wearing or using any makeup i would have thought you were crazy like i used to wear a lot of makeup just foundation eyeshadow bronzer contour mascara fake lashes brows brow gel everything all of that and then i wore it probably every day to school and then i switched to online school and of course in online school i didn't really feel like wearing makeup every day and then i just kind of stopped after that and i did have acne when i stopped wearing makeup and i did go out in stores with my acne showing and i just i guess i kind of got used to it i didn't feel the need to cover up anymore and plus i probably wouldn't see those people in the stores again in my life and if they felt they need to judge then that was fine didn't care what they thought anyways so yeah just kind of stopped wearing makeup and now if i ever try mascara or something i don't really like the way i look anymore so i just kind of stopped wearing makeup all together and probably haven't worn makeup in about six months number eight on my list is cotton balls q-tips cotton rounds all of that stuff once again i don't paint my nails or use any skincare or need to remove any makeup for those things and as for q-tips i just have a reusable like metal one i also stopped buying fast fashion as well as luxury items so of course fast fashion is brands like forever 21 zaful sheen american eagle and then luxury of course would be gucci chanel and all those other brands i quit fast fashion because it is horrible for the environment i quit it probably over a year ago and i only mostly thrift my clothing or purchase certain items from sustainable brands as well as luxury items i just don't feel the need to have that and honestly not worth the price to me i'd rather buy from a small sustainable brand than chanel i also do not purchase trendy items now i used to always buy trendy items until i really took the time to find my style and i found that i like more minimalistic timeless clothing and i also like to throw some graphic tees in the mix but yeah i don't really buy trendy clothing items because most of the time if you look back like at six months ago's trends you'd be like what the heck were we wearing so that too is why i don't buy trendy items number eleven is unnecessary shoes once again something that i fell victim to for years and years and years i always bought super unnecessary wild shoes just because they looked cool and honestly there were pairs i only wore like three times and then gave them away because i got tired of them so instead i do choose to buy timeless more minimalistic shoes that will suit every one of my outfits and every season i also do not buy excess accessories costume jewelry or anything i was really never the type to switch my jewelry around mostly because i'm kind of too lazy to all the time and all i really wear is this necklace from ammobert these gold hoop earrings my nose ring and then my belly button piercing although i do have a second piercing that i want to get some tiny gold hoops for and yeah i just kind of hate changing my earrings around and stuff i also do not buy brand new special occasion item clothings i either try to find something in my closet that i could dress up for that special occasion or i would try and go and have for something at a thrift store as it is more cost effective because you're most likely going to be only wearing the item once and it's better for the environment because it's already out there rather being a brand new item that you're only going to be wearing once number 14 is faux leather products this kind of goes with my zero waste lifestyle because lots of times faux leather products are made out of plastics and of course plastics are not biodegradable so i would rather just not contribute to faux leather products and rather buy like canvas cotton shoes than faux leather boots just kind of my personal preference i also do not use heat tools on my hair anymore don't use a straightener because i have naturally straight hair and i don't wear my hair curly all the time and if i do i like to do heatless hairstyles especially since i have bleached hair that i'm trying to grow out and i'm trying to not have it break as much as i'm trying to grow it out so i just don't really find heat tools necessary i don't really have any anymore either and i'm not planning to buy anymore i also do not buy multiple lip balms i had a giant lip balm collection in probably eighth grade and all those just went expired literally didn't even touch some of them just because i wanted to collect lip balms now i only keep one little lip balm at a time and then use it up and then buy another one i also do not own multiple perfumes i only own one at a time and honestly i always forget to put on perfume anyways it's just i i just forget and i also find perfumes to break me out and yeah just don't really want acne from perfumes i also do not use mouthwash honestly it was never my thing if i ever had mouthwash i would always forget to use it so yeah i don't really own or use mouthwash i just floss my teeth and brush them twice a day and i go to the dentist twice a year they say my teeth are perfectly healthy without using mouthwash i also stopped purchasing disposable self-care items now this means razors deodorants shampoos etc i switched out all my disposable self-care items for zero waste self-care items like a reusable safety razor or i also use sugar wax as well as zero waste shampoos etc i wanna apologize if the background moved a bit my camera battery died and of course i just switch it of course it dies in the middle of filming so this once again is very personal to me because i know it is not practical for a lot of you out there but i don't really buy bras anymore honestly most of the time i don't wear one because i have very small boobs so i don't really find the need to have any anymore and if i do feel the need to like be a little more covered i actually just use pasties so like with this tank top i won't wear a bra with it but i have a white version of this which is kind of see-through so i actually just have pasties which match my skin tone and then put those on and it works perfectly i just don't really need the support because like i said i have very small boobs so i think the only kind of like bra i have is like a paloma sports bra for when i do yoga from girlfriend collective but that i don't really consider a bra i just kind of consider more of a workout top i do not buy items just because they are on sale when i used to buy a lot of clothing items from fast fashion places i would just go in the sale section just to buy something because it was on sale i did that all the time and i would buy an item that i honestly did not need just because it was on sale so i don't do that anymore i also do not purchase multiple handbags anymore honestly i have two purses and once those kind of wear out i won't purchase another purse just because i'm not a huge purse person i much prefer having no purse at all or if i do need to carry a few extra items i like little backpacks instead just because i hate carrying stuff on one shoulder so once my two purses that i own wear out i will only purchase a little backpack also do not buy your own an apple watch fitbit or just really watches in general i am not a huge watch person and i kind of hate the feeling of stuff on my wrist and like i said i garden and cook all the time and that watch will probably get disgusting i personally don't feel the need to have a fitbit or apple watch just because i feel like it's something that will not benefit my lifestyle and yeah i don't really feel the need to have an apple watch fitbit or just watch in general another thing that i do not buy anymore or own or use is shaving cream i actually don't really think i've ever used shaving cream to shave i just have like a bar of soap that i lather up and shave with that and it seems to work perfectly fine especially with my safety razor now the last item on my personal care health fashion list is specific body wash i used to be the one that would love specific bottles of body wash like the bath body works once and stuff i would buy those all the time and now instead i just use a bar of soap as my body wash plus i always felt after getting out of the shower at the body wash it wouldn't really smell anymore so i didn't really see the point of it anymore so now that we are done with the beauty personal care fashion products i'm on to the lifestyle products now the first item that i do not buy in the lifestyle category is pre-packaged pre-cut food i of course understand that pre-cut food was made for people with disabilities and that is perfectly fine although i do wish they put it in more eco-friendly packaging than plastic i personally do not need pre-cut or pre-packaged food in my life because i am completely capable of cutting and preparing food myself i also do not buy meal subscriptions i have had probably four meal subscription brands reach out to me and they are pretty big brands to work on a partnership and no matter how much they offered me i did decline them because it's not part of my zero slash low waste lifestyle and i personally find joy in shopping for my food and preparing it myself because i feel like there's something really special about home cooked meal and if i am ever in a time crunch i like to always have leftovers on hand instead of having a meal subscription i also did not purchase phone apps or phone games when i was younger i always loved itunes gift cards to buy a bunch of games and nowadays i don't really play any games on my phone i don't think i really have any except candy crush when i'm really bored i also do not purchase plastic ziploc bags and once again this is mostly because i am zero slash low waist and i find it to be pretty impractical when there are other better options out there such as jars containers and reusable bags i also do not buy paper towels instead i use either super old cut up t-shirts or just rags to clean stuff and i also use specific rags for specific things so i have a countertop rack a floor rag a bathroom rack just all of that i also do not buy air fresheners instead i like to use candles i also really never got into buying air fresheners i've just always been a huge candle person and i like to reuse candle jars for other things bottled drinks is something else i do not buy one because i'm zero slash low waist and because i don't really drink a lot of bottled drinks all i really drink are tea coffee and water so yeah i don't really find the need to have bottled drinks in my life some other lifestyle items i do not purchase anymore are plastic based disk sponges as well as plastic bottled dish soap instead i use a compostable discover as well as a zero waste dish soap block i also never ever purchase the newest technology every year so i do only purchase new technology when i absolutely need it like i had the iphone 6 for probably four years until it like totally took a dump on me it completely stopped working and that's when i felt the need to buy a new phone doesn't really bring any joy to my life to have the newest technology and it's not so great for the environment to buy a new phone every year either i also personally do not buy pre-packaged or pre-made snacks once again because most of them come in plastics and i try to avoid that and i just prefer to make my own snacks at home so i'll have like fruit and granola make my own cool new snacks i usually like to find snack ideas on pinterest so yeah just prefer to make my own snacks at home because it's cheaper healthier and usually tastier i also do not buy single use plastic products that could be plates cups forks spoons i also try to avoid most food items that also come in single-use plastic by either making it myself finding an alternative like purchasing it in bulk etc although there are some food items i can't avoid in single-use plastics such as tofu and my coffee creamer and items like that but i hope to one day find a zero waste tofu i'm not exactly sure how i'm gonna go about finding that but yeah i do try to avoid a lot of single-use plastic lifestyle products i also do not purchase jars like i do not purchase specific mason jars and as you may see in a lot of my videos i use jars for storage and cups and stuff like that you may wonder where i get those and i just reuse peanut butter jars nopales jars pasta sauce jars and a bunch of other jars i get from family members who also have items that come in it and you don't need it so yeah i just use jars that come in food items that i buy or from family members and it saves me a lot of money not having to buy specific mason jars and to make all the lids kind of uniform i like to spray paint them especially the peanut butter ones that have the adam's peanut butter logo on it i also do not purchase knickknack slash unnecessary decor i only purchased a core that brings real joy into my life kind of like artwork i have artwork back there that i either make myself or that i just really love i also decorate with plants and kind of natural things that i find such as cool rocks that i find at the beach i also do not buy specific cleaners so that could be drain cleaners tile cleaners mirror cleaners etc i make a lot of my own diy all-purpose cleaners that work perfectly good i also do not own multiple phone cases which i was definitely guilty of a few years back instead i only have one phone case and that is my biodegradable slash compostable pila case and i find that is the only phone case i need in my life and if that phone case ever breaks i'll just buy a new pila case i only buy biodegradable phone cases too because as you may know phone cases are plastic and phone cases will just end up in the landfill and contribute to microplastic pollution i also do not buy items made from unsustainable materials so that could be polyester clothing or plastic furniture or items like that i also do not buy fast food i think i only get it a couple times a year when i'm going camping with my family and while we're like driving places we have to stop and get fast food but if i'm by myself i do not buy fast food really i also do not purchase or own a keurig coffee maker or i also do not purchase their own paper coffee filters my coffee maker took a crap on me like probably a few weeks ago and i honestly use my french fries most of the time anyway so i'm not planning on purchasing another coffee maker i'm only using the french press and i also purchased a v60 i think that's what it called what it's called a v60 ceramic pour over coffee thing but anyways both of those are zero waste because i also purchased reusable hemp coffee filters for the v6d pour over and keurigs are just really bad for the environment because they use the disposable keurig cups now if you do already have a keurig i highly recommend purchasing the reusable k-cup instead of using those disposable plastic ones i also do not purchase cable tv my family we haven't had cable tv since i was probably eight years old we just got netflix i also absolutely cannot stand commercials so i cannot fathom paying the price for cable tv to sit through half of the tv show being commercials number 47 on my list is fabric softener dryer sheets i honestly air dry most of my clothing not just because it's more eco-friendly but also because a lot of my clothing i buy says it's specifically air dry only so yeah and i don't really feel i need to have the fabric softener and dryer sheets just because it's not really practical for my clothing i don't find it does anything specifically beneficial another item on my list is especially for when i move into my own apartment but i am not going to buy cheap furniture cheap furniture could mean cheap in quality as well as in price if i buy brand new furniture i plan to buy from a sustainable ethical brand that is good quality but i know that will be pretty pricey so i do plan to actually thrift a lot of my furniture as well and that is where the cheap does not mean price in cheap furniture number 49 on my list is brand new cars one because brand new cars are kind of rip off because the minute you drive a brand new car off the lot it's price goes right down and of course it's better for the environment to buy used cars and my dream car anyways is not a brand new car it's a 69 bronco gorgeous cars oh my gosh beautiful and yeah so don't really plan on ever buying a brand new car number 50 the last item slash items i do not buy are unnecessary eco-friendly items when i was first getting into my zero special always eco-friendly journey i kind of bought items just because they were eco-friendly and that kind of also goes with those bamboo cutlery sets i do not need those just because they're eco-friendly i would rather just take some cutlery from my own drawer and use that whenever i go out places which like i said earlier is not very often and yeah that is all 50 items that i do not buy or own anymore to live a more sustainable slash zero low waste minimal lifestyle as well as save money in the process i hope you guys enjoyed this
