welcome to downshift my name is Matt and this is the BMW X1 it's BMW's smallest and most affordable SUV and it's got some pretty stiff competition like the Audi Q3 and the Mercedes glb and today thanks to our friends at International BMW we're going to see just how this thing Stacks up to that field let's get into it now for starters there's just a couple strange things going on here for example adaptive cruise isn't standing and I kind of feel like it should be from the German 3 Mercedes BMW and Audi you also get the iconic sounds which I've only ever seen in the electric cars but I guess you have it here too to synthesize the engine note and you have heated seats but they aren't standard here and you don't have a cooled seat option at all and you can't get heated rear seats are these things deal breakers no and you can option A bunch of this stuff aside from the cooled seats so it's not a huge deal but just something to note and then we have to talk about the price the X1 starts at 4,5 $500 the Mercedes glb then starts at$ 398 but that's only for wheel drive to get all-wheel drive you're going up to $42,000 so a couple Grand more than you get in the X1 but the Audi Q3 is going to start at $37,000 so significantly lower than the X1 so it's slightly less than the glb and it's quite a bit more than the Q3 as tested this one is specked out to pretty much everything that you can get and that comes just across the line at $50,000 now $50,000 is all also where the more sporty M35 is going to start to come in once we get that on the lot here and then the X3 if you were wondering The Next Step Up starts at $47,000 so $3,000 less than the ads tested price here but that's just for rear wheeel drive it's going to be 49k to get all-wheel drive in your X3 but as it stands in the segment it's kind of the usual lineup the Mercedes is the most expensive the BMW's in the middle and the Audi is the most affordable but speced out here over the $50,000 Mark it's pretty expensive for a sub compact SUV and then we have to talk about the Min and I don't mean that it's the smallest SUV that BMW makes I mean the fact that this is built on a mini chassis which means it's inherently front-wheel drive biased but with the X1 you do get X drive all-wheel drive as standard and it comes with torque vectoring so it kind of synthesizes some of that rear wheeel drive in a similar way of acura's super handling all-wheel drive do you end up feeling the difference from the front drive architecture not really no but if you do drive it really hard and you're really starting to look for it maybe you could see some of the under steer but it is it's on a mini chassis it's a mini and then just in the interest of being thorough we're going to talk about Towing the X1 from BMW is not rated to tow I'm sure it can tow something but we don't know what that is and there's also conflicting information online for the glb but at least it's rated some are saying 3,500 lb some are saying 5500 lb but to be honest I'm skeptical of either of those numbers but again that's what you get on the internet and the Audi q3's towing capacity is somewhere between 2,000 and 2200 lb and I know next to no one is going to tow with their X1 but we just have to be thorough for the sake of the video and then we have to talk about the transmission now this is a seven-speed dual clutch transmission and I suspect that's probably part of the Min showing itself again now this just being said the zf8 speed that's in pretty much all the other BMWs would just be better then you could probably add the 48 volt mild hybrid system as well and I'm wondering if they couldn't do this because it's the mini chassis so you get the mini dual clutch and basically what it amounts to is when you are driving it hard and with this M sport you do get the paddle so you can control the gearbox but when you're driving it hard it's nice the shifts are crisp it's very good what you expect from a dual clutch but just driving around day-to-day pulling away from a stoplight driving through parking lots it does feel a little bit more clunky a little bit more cumbersome whereas a normal torque converted automatic would probably make more sense for this a subc compact SUV and one of the things I really like about the X1 is well the way it looks the shape is very conventional and boxy SUV it almost looks like a baby X5 which is my favorite looking of all BMWs SUVs now this new X1 is 2 in longer than last gen it's an inch wider than last gen and I just like the look this and the glb I really like the look of the glb is the only thing in the class that's bigger as well the glb does offer that useless third row though so that could ruin your rear seat and trunk space depending on how you Speck hit but anyway this X1 has the shadow line package and you can see that has all the black accents which gives it the Stormtrooper spec with this beautiful Alpine white paint this also gets the mport package which gets you a more aggressive lower front fascia unique Wheels with the m logos on them you can either get 18 or 19in Wheels on the X1 and 20s on the incoming m35i you've also got a more aggressive rear roof spoiler more aggressive diffuser Outback still no exhaust tips but you will get quad tips on your m35i I just like the more conventional boxy SUV shape and I do like the classic Domino Stormtrooper Panda black and white spec that you get here it's pretty good but now we're going to talk about the engine we're going to talk specifically about performance and fuel economy now here you get the 2 L turbocharged 4 cylinder it's not the 48volt mild hybrid system that's in pretty much all the other BMWs at this point but you get the 2 L turbo does 241 horsepower 295 pound feet of torque again going through that seven-speed dual clutch to all-wheel drive again kind of weird maybe not necessarily BMW but more mini but anyway 0 to 60 is in like the low to mid 6 seconds so it's not like it's slow this is also the most power that you're going to get as opposed to what you're going to get in the Q3 or the glb but then in terms of fuel economy you're also pretty good too 25 in the city and 34 on the highway now those are pretty good numbers but I can't help again feel like if you had that 48 volt mild hybrid system You' get like another one MPG and then you know the transition as you pull away from a stop sign or even in between gear shifts from the Dual clutch would just be a little bit smoother so just something to know but with that being said if this still isn't enough horsepower for you if the most horsepower in in the class isn't enough for you there is an m35i coming and that's going to give you about 70 more horsepower quad tips and probably a bunch more drama so wait for that and then let's talk trunk it's nice and big you've got 26 cubic feet with the seats up if you fold the seats down which fold completely flat you get 57 cubic feet of space which is 10 more cubic feet than you're going to get in the Audi Q3 the glb will give you a touch more trunk space but that's only if you don't option the third row thing but it's a great and practical trunk here and I always like the little netting that you get on the sides and then we have to talk about the way that this thing drives in general now it is on a mini chassis and it's front-wheel drive based but this is still the most fun that you're going to have in the segment and a lot of that is thanks to the M sport package that we have here you get upgraded brakes you get adaptive suspension you get paddles so you can control yourself the the Dual clutch transmission so when you are on it you can really get that satisfying snap that you guys know I'm all about you get the Boost paddles for a launch control and it just feels more at home being driven hard than you would get in a Q3 or a GB it's still BMW and it's still pretty fun to drive but I'm waiting for the m335i and then there's the rear seats I mean I'm 61 look at this these seats are huge back here they're slightly bigger than the Q3 slightly smaller than the G but again that's assuming you don't get the third row in the glb they do recline a little they fold nice and flat you can't get heated seats back here but they're just about Best in Class map Pockets vents Chargers you name it plus I have plenty of head room again 61 and plenty of knee room so it doesn't miss back here this is a subcompact SUV that I have just as much space in as the last gen X3 now I want to take a second to talk about the spec and kind of the general luxuries that you get here now in terms of the spec it's kind of the classic Domino spec right it's got the Alpine white with the shadow line it's that black and white I really I do like it it's kind of Timeless BMW but in the interior you get the black M sport seats you get kind of suede for most of the seat but you do get blue stitching you also get some of that mtry color little tiny detailing that I think for me goes a long way uh you do get a heated seat option we have it here it's got like four levels of heated seat and you also get four levels of heated steering wheel now that's something that's pretty awesome as it's below freezing today and I've never SE seen four levels of heated steering wheel before so that's pretty cool you cannot though get a cooled seat in here you also can't get cooled rear seats um the center console though in terms of the design it's very BMW iix we've done a couple videos on that so it looks very familiar it's kind of that floating console design and then you get a panoramic roof which is super nice it lets in plenty of light it doesn't hurt Headroom at all uh you've got really nice ambient light across the cabin and also surrounding your wireless phone phone charger which is just kind of cool your wireless phone charger is like something I'm weirdly obsessed with it's got ambient lights surrounding it it's got like a little seat belt for your phone in there it's just really cool and then you got Harmon Card and speakers that not only look cool but they sound pretty great as well so it's a nice interior here and then how could we not talk about technology you get a bunch of stuff like a head-up display which is part of your premium package you've got comfort access which will lock and unlock the car as you approach and leave the vehicle and then you've got the big dual screens they're running iDrive 8 but next year the cars will be running iDrive 9 but even here on iDrive 8 you've got Wireless Apple carplay over theair updates you've got awesome 360 cameras you love to see it on this class of vehicle You' even got the reverse assist that I love so much you've got a wireless charger with plenty of theater like ambient lights surrounding it and its own seat belt I mean there's not anything that I'm missing here at all so with that let's get into the final thoughts so that is the best in the rest of the BMW X1 as you can tell through the course of the video I really like this thing I think it's a great fit for the segment the only other vehicle in the segment that could maybe make me think twice is the Mercedes glb but that's pretty much purely a styling perspective if you want the best driving loads of room and plenty of practicality the x1's where you want to go so thanks again to our friends at International BMW for letting us check out their X1
