hey i'm matt today i want to show you five tools under 30 i think every woodworker should have in their shop let's go if you're interested in any of these products you see today i'll put links in the description below so you can go check them out for yourself number one on the list is probably one of the most useful things i've ever used in the shop it's a kind of an accessory to a tool what is this let me show you this is fast cap zero clearance tape and it's made from miter saws you can use it on the table saw as well but if your throat plate doesn't stick up too high or you can adjust it down this will work there but it really shines on a miter saw and what this will do is actually make your cuts much cleaner because you have that zero clearance on the bottom it reduces that tear out it's super easy to put on let me show you it's a thick vinyl material but it has a sticky back to it and this stuff is under 30 bucks and you get five of these so if you actually have to make a bevel cut or mess up and a piece of wood damages it you can always replace it super easy it's a really good sticky back just clean your your throat plate off start at the back just position it in the center and just as you stick it on you just remove this film backing i usually just take a box cutter and trim the end off this stuff cuts really easily and it's just that vinyl we'll make a cut with the zero clearance on there now that is just super super clean so you made a bevel cut and you've widened the gap or a piece of wood kicks back or something and damages it well now you've got not a zero clearance the great thing about this stuff is it peels right off and then you've got four other ones that come in the pack that you can replace it with but what i've noticed on this stuff is i use it for months one piece of tape lasts a very long time if you're just making regular 90 degree cuts miters or straight down cuts as long as you're not beveling if you start beveling then you'll run through it a little faster but it's very well made and it lasts a very long time you can see this piece on my dewalt miter saw here it's been on there for a very long time it's just it's just good stuff this is without the zero clearance tape i got a little bit of fraying there but mainly it happened over here you see there's a little tear out there that doesn't happen with the zero clearance tape and if you're not using a very good quality blade this makes even more of a difference i've got a 80 tooth fine blade on there but if you have a lower tooth count then this makes the zero clearance tape makes more of a difference i've got the saw turned up to full speed i'm gonna plunge this as fast as i can safely and we'll see if we get any tear out or if this minimizes it versus when we don't have this on there [Music] it's pretty good i mean there's a tiny bit of fraying right there there's a little there but it's not terrible yep quite a bit of tear out there and you can see quite a bit there like there's a that's a major difference between the two one of the most common concerns i get asked about this stuff is will it throw the cuts off you can see how thin this stuff is or maybe you can't but it's it's really thin again under thirty dollars for five of them i don't really recommend it on the table saw like i said but on the miter saw this stuff is almost a necessity number two on the list was that check this out basically i use the magnetic handles to hang hearing protection on the bandsaw or over at the dust collector i hang my flex holes on there that i use to go around the shop different tools and then also you can use them to hang blades on because of their unique shape that u-shaped you're able to basically hang anything on them it basically makes a magnetic hanger for you in your shop you'll find tons of uses for these things and they're super cheap i also have these magnetic trays that i used to keep them in the drawer but now that i have my tool wall it's metal so i stick them up there but they're perfect for keeping up with drill bits or driver bits odd and in screws bolts things like that when you're working on things these things are awesome to have in the shop and of course if your drawers are so super organized like mine here these are perfect for that because you're able to keep up with the most important things and then the rest of the junk's just in there and finally you can get a pack of these rare earth magnets you can stick them on anything magnetic metal and they work extremely well i use them all around the shop at the drill press to keep up with that chuck because if i don't i'm going to lose it it's always great to stick it right back on there also you can use them anywhere you can put them on a bandsaw and put a clamp up there or at the table saw it's where i use to keep my remote for my dust extractor that's what i can keep up with it doesn't get knocked off on the floor i don't lose it it's just a great way to keep up with metal things number three on the list is a rockler silicone project mat now if you do glue ups like most of us woodworkers do this thing is great for protecting your surface from getting wood glue on it so like your workbench that's wood you don't want glue on it the glue will not stick to this it'll dry on it peel it right up it's perfect for that or if you use like resins epoxy resins it won't stick to this either because it's silicone you see here where i recently done a resin pour and i got a little bit spilled over onto this it didn't get on my workbench because of this but it just comes right out of there that's dried black resin it's got these grooves so even if something does spill it gets down to those grooves so you still got a flat surface like all that resin is under the surface look how easy it comes up just peels right out of there this is titebond 3 wood glue we're going to smear that on there we'll come back and get that glue off as soon as it dries stay tuned right now let me show you two more products under 30 bucks that you need number four on the list one of the simplest most basic tools you can have in your wood shop is a one two three setup block i'm sure you may have seen these before somewhere else but these are just really handy to have because they're perfectly square in every direction and they're exactly one inch by two inches by three inches so you know exactly what you got they're great for setting up tools and things like that these have holes in them for purposes we'll talk about in a minute but for the most part in my shop what i use them for is when i get a new square in the shop i know this is perfectly square but i can always check and make sure that the new square i got in is square especially small ones like this you can also use them to check the 90 on your saw blades at the miter saw you can also use it to set the height the depth things like that on different tools like setting the height of the table saw exactly two inches tall or one inch tall or you can set the fence away from the blade one inch by two inch or three inches because you know exactly what you got there's no measuring and trying to figure that stuff out so you can actually calibrate your saw fence to the blade using one of these super easy if you watch thumpy nubs video there he's got a video out where mike taylor of taytools.com come out with a connection kit so you can actually use these you'll notice some of these holes are threaded and you can connect these together for various different purposes go check out his video i'll link in the description below as well as tate tools so you can check them out that connection kit if you want to connect two of these together these are universal fence clamps and they work on just about any fence hence the name universal these are from rockler they're very inexpensive and they're great for having on multiple tools not just a table saw i'm going to show you the table saw first and then i'll show you the other ones just take a piece of plywood mdf anything like that that's about the same height of your fence and just drill two 3 8 inch holes here you see me using a pocket hole drill bit because they're 3 8 of an inch so if you have one of those that's all you need if not just get a 3 8 bit drill that hole deep enough that this prong can go down in there these have threaded ends on it so you can extend it out if you have a wider fence like this one or a thinner fence like on job site saws things like that now we have a sacrificial fence that we can use to cut dados or rabbets actually on the edge of the board or you could actually just build a jointing jig which i'll show you too first thing you do is just move the fence over on top of that blade if you have a dado stack you can obviously cut wider pieces now just be careful that you don't move it over too far and get into your fence defeating the purpose but i'm going to turn this on and raise the blade make sure you take the riving knife out for this so now we got that cut all you have to do is move that fence over off of the blade now we can actually cut rabbets things like that and before there's no way to get this fence the original fence that close to the blade without damaging your original fence and that's what this allows you to do so now that i got my blade height set to whatever rabbet depth i want i can just use this to do gravity so now you've got a rabbet you got to rab it out of a board so it's really easy to do if you use a dado stack you can get a wider rabbet or you can just keep making multiple passes and if you don't have a jointer you can actually use this as your jointing jig let me show you i have a video on how to joint without a jointer multiple ways this is one of those included in that video i'll drop that link in the description if you're interested in seeing the other methods for this one you want to raise your blade up all the way as thick as or as more than the board is thick just a little and we're just wanting to take just the edge off of this board so you won't need a full blade kerf you're just going to need just a little bit [Music] this works excellent if you don't have a jointer but you do have a table saw the one trick is keep pressure against laterally against the fence be careful don't get your fingers near that blade keep them back here and keep both sides of the board on the front and the back side of the blade pushed against the fence and it'll come out clean and smooth and you'll have a really flat straight side it's a great way to joint using a sacrificial fence one of my favorite use cases for these are using them for stop blocks at the miter station because a lot of times our stop blocks if you have a water station aren't close enough there a lot of them are out 10 or 12 inches away from the saw and we're cutting small parts at four and five inches we need to be able to repeat those cuts this is a great way to do that just take your scrap piece cut it drill that hole in there the only thing here you just need to make sure that the piece is about as tall as your fence now i've got my stop block set up and all i have to do is bump it to the stop block and make the cut the one thing i will tell you is when you make this cut make sure you plunge it all the way through and then let the blade stop before you bring it back up when you're using a stop block like this it's really a better general tip to do anyway but if you bring the blade up while it's still spinning and you have the stop lock you could cause yourself a kickback so just make sure to keep it all the way down until the blade's up [Music] now i've got four pieces all exactly the same length and just really quickly with that easy setup block right there you'll find dozens of uses for these but if you're still getting tear out on your miter saw cuts you can create a faux fence like this or a sacrificial fence and have a zero clearance fence behind you and with the tape you'll have a zero clearance beneath you let me show you if you do use this method to put a faux fence on your miter saw i do recommend that you put double-sided tape on the back the reason is it'll hold this bottom piece tight after this is cut this side does not have double stick this side does this side is much more secure doesn't move flex out this side will flex out on you at the bottom if you don't secure it with double stick tape that's just an excellent way to level up your miter saw cuts and get rid of those tear outs you're maybe having let's check on that glue see how easy that glue come off that mat man i'm telling you go get you one of those if you love these tools under 30 you'll love these tools under 30. a whole playlist a bunch of tools you need under 30 bucks also if you've got a little more budget to spend there's some really awesome tools right there
