but how can you make a decision when you're not a flooring expert my answer to you you don't need to be one so sit back set that timer and get ready for an information dump directly into your flooring hard drive get set go all luxury vinyl flooring thickness is measured in millimeters and falls into two main categories the first is glue down glue down planks usually have a backing that grabs a hold of the glue which is a special adhesive that allows for a damaged plank replacement if installed correctly second is the floating type where each plank connects together to form a layer of flooring that is firm but yet physically not connected to the subfloor and speaking a subfloor the requirements for glue down need to be firm and smooth like a good luan or concrete while the floating types don't require smoothness so much as flatness as unevenness may keep the connecting planks from holding together LVT consists of three basic layers beginning with the transparent scratch resistant wear layer with the matching UV layer where layer is the term that you'll hear thrown around a lot where layers are gauged in mils not to be confused with millimeters and range anywhere from around 4 mils up to 30 mils and beyond it's what keeps the floor looking beautiful longer single-digit wear layers are entry level and will not keep its beauty for very long while 12 mil wear layers are about the residential standard but if you really want your floor to look good longer than state 20 mils or above next we have the design layer which is a literal grass pick print or photo of your product it's the wood or stone visual and it comes in many styles and colors under these are the cores the core is the backbone structure of the floor some products will even incorporate an attached pad to the underside of the core to help it ride over any subfloor deficiencies all luxury vinyl flooring cores fall into three construction types traditional LVT uses a multi-layer PVC or polyvinyl chloride construction it is easily the thinnest and most flexible where the rigid cores are noticeably thicker next we have the two rigid core types SPC uses a stone polymer which is very resistant to dents and temperature fluctuations then there's WPC which uses a wood polymer WPC is noticeably softer than the other two and helps with the room sound quality while PVC cores are found in both glue down and the floating floors the floating utilizes mainly the SPC and WPC cores all are waterproof and offer a great alternative to hardwood and tile at a fraction of the cost this leads us to the first thing that comes to mind when we pick out a floor how does it look luxury vinyl has many colors and patterns to choose from you'll find it in almost any wood color and grain from the lightest grays to the deepest mahogany's there are many tile sizes and patterns to choose from as well but it's important to know that since these are graphic prints there will be some repeats within a carton or a shipment unfortunately the pattern repeat occurrence gets higher as the product price gets lower and here's where an installers kenai ensures that these repeats are spread out within an installation as much as possible since the most important surface in any room is the one that you're standing on let's talk about how luxury vinyl feels glue down planks will be the hardest and the coolest to the touch being physically connected to the subfloor it easily transmits the temperature up into your feet on the other hand floating will be the warmer of the two with WPC being both the warmest and the softest as it is less dense and faster to react to room temperature fluctuations yet all are after than most hardwoods and stones if you move your furniture around a lot then PVC or the stone polymer core maybe what you want if it's acoustics the softness of wood polymer may be better option for you in any case luxury vinyl flooring probably has the product for you and your lifestyle with just the right mix of style and benefit it definitely deserves its current Top Billing well that about wraps things up for the top five vinyl Nuggets this was a speed session that will be followed up in the
