hey guys hi everybody welcome back to the channel if you guys like the videos uh just you know subscribe hit the like button ring the bell that way you get notified when i put up new content uh this video here is going to be just a quick little i keep getting asked you know what what kind of things you know a guy gets into a field truck you know coming from the shop and and wants to get into a field truck for the first time so i've been thinking about it and there's you know five things i picked up the five things that i think and you know it's i mean it's difficult because there's a whole bunch of things that you need to have for a field trip but if you're to ask me i guess i'm gonna i'm gonna simplify it down into just these are the five things that you can go buy off of a tool truck off of amazon from your harbor freight from however but whatever level of of a tool that you have these these five things i think every heavy equipment field mechanic should have on his truck before he rolls out of the shop for the first time um in and it's my opinion it's not you know to each their own and by all rights comment let me know if there's something else you guys think is more important than something that i choose on this list but these are the five things um you know and some of it you should have in the shop but before you even get in a field truck or you strive to be in a field truck you should probably have this in your toolbox if you're working in a shop in a heavy equipment atmosphere in a diesel atmosphere and in reality a couple of them are you know as a mechanic in general you should have these in your in your toolbox they should be on that at the higher end of your your list as far as what what you're going to buy the next time you go on a tool run so yeah whether you buy them online whether you buy them on your tool truck whatever your brand of choice my brand of choice happens to be snap-on in in the pacific northwest and it's been the brand that's been represented the strongest as far as uh support and things like that so yeah you're going to see most of these four of the five items are snap-on brands blue point and then the other three are snap-on so first thing is if you're going to be a mechanic in general you need to learn how to use your multimeter so i have the the newest one that i have is snap-ons meter part number what is this one this is the smallest there it is ee dm596f uh but basically it's the it's the newest one with the bluetooth feature to it so you can actually connect to your phone you can have this sitting somewhere else on the machine and while you run in the cabin you can actually watch it on the screen on your phone that was a feature that was interesting to me and currently i since i've had this i haven't actually used that feature i've used in the preview in the past i've actually videoed with my phone video the multimeter while i'm running a machine or doing a function if i don't have an operator with me a lot of times nowadays we got operators with us so as far as the bluetooth feature i don't know if it's worth the extra money i will tell you that buy as expensive of a multimeter as you can afford there is a difference as far as quality in your meters again like i said snap-on is represented but fluke makes a good meter you can you can go to your local uh home supply store home depot lowe's we have jerry's as our local local one here and they have multi-meters in their electrical department and they're actually pretty affordable and they're good meters you just need to make sure that it will cover the features that it covers is what you're doing so um if you're doing generate power generation uh if you're gonna be doing some of that stuff you need to i don't and so but you do i believe it's uh hertz you need to make sure that you have frequencies that you can actually read on your meter for that so just something to think about uh depending on what what side of uh the field service you're going to go into but make sure that you can re you can run an amp clamp you can whether you get an auto ranging or manual ranging again just make sure that you are comfortable with your meter and reading the display get used to using it while you're in the shop because when you're out in the field it's just you so and they're generally the operator or the owner of the equipment is looking right over your shoulder so if you go out on an electrical problem and you don't know how to use your meter and you're trying to learn how to use your meter out on the job it might not look the best so get a good meter get used to using it the next thing uh torque wrenches whether you're in the shop or out in the field you need to start purchasing torque wrenches quarter drive three inch drive half inch drive three quarter inch drive torque wrenches um i have a three quarter inch torque torque wrench in the truck and i'd say it's important but what i think is actually more important because generally you're going to know if you need a three-quarter inch drive torque wrench and most dealerships you're going to have the opportunity probably to borrow the three-quarter torque wrench from the tool cage or from the tool room or whatever your dealerships got set up if you're working uh an end user you know construction company things like that you might have somebody that you can borrow maybe the other field mechanics have one maybe the company has one whatever but i'm saying the half inch drive tech wrench so my choice of the tech wrench from snap-on again but the digital get yourself a good digital torque wrench for today's for uh for today if you're gonna get in the into a field truck now you you definitely need a an electronic torque wrench in my opinion with torque to yield bolts we're going torque angles things like that so this one here is the 12 and a half to 250 foot-pound torque wrench and it pretty much covers it i think maybe somebody can correct me but i think snap-on makes one now that is has goes up to 300 maybe but i know mine i haven't really needed it anything more than 250 for what i've used it's done me really well i've had this one for shoot i don't even remember how long i've had it but more than likely it was one of those things that i saw and upgraded and traded in my non-digital one so but that's a choice i think if you're going to be in a field truck you're going to step out of the shop for a dealership you need to make sure you invest in a good half inch drive digital torque wrench and you should have your 3 8 strike torque wrenches also but i wouldn't say that there is the necessity of them being digital as a half inch the half inch covers a good wide range and i think that's a good choice so so that's the second thing i think that you should have third thing for a mechanic for just general mechanics whether you're gonna be a truck whether you're gonna be uh material handling whether you're gonna be anything really uh diesel wise uh maybe you work in the rust belt i don't know impact driver uh this one gets used well it gets obviously gets pulled out a lot in the wet in the pacific northwest but if you don't have an impact driver they are they are a lifesaver you can't get a screw loose for screwdrivers slip they don't bite the screw anymore they're rusted out maybe it's corroded away uh things like uh sockets you can put a socket on so this one obviously it's three inch drive from snap-on part number two well no i don't know from snap-on call your talk to your local tool truck you can get this off amazon it is a p i t one two zero from snap on that's the one i have these bits are are replaceable you break a bit they can replace them just like any other any uh socket driver bit from snap-on you can get multiple different ones there's a storage case things like that but amazon does have a good one mac has a good one matco has a good one so just pick one and go for it don't get all hung up on the brand and all that just go for it now as far as equipment goes i'm gonna save with what i do in the heavy equipment world troubleshooting diagnostics things like that a good photo tack if you don't have a good photo attack you're not going to be able to do a hundred percent on your troubleshooting diagnostics of hydraulics you can't set up travel properly wait for their compressor to kick off okay so a good photo attack and make sure you got one that will do rpms has a this one here comes with the different attachments it goes on the end you put it up and it'll spin so you can do that or it's also got the laser so this is the blue point mt-139a i've had it for probably 12 years and it's been a really good one for me the i've had i've had some other brands i've used some other brands this is the one that i continue to use so i've had it you know i've tried some other ones and stuff but being able to use the photo eye so using a laser and put a reflective strip on on a sawdisk or a lot of times i'll clean up a sawdisk make it nice and shiny and then put a piece of tape on spray paint a black peel the tape off then you got a nice shiny spot with the laser it'll pick that up it tells you the rpms on the on this sawdisk the other thing is using travel you got a guy that says it travels crooked you go set up travel and and the low side might be faster than the highest than the other low side on the right track right left or left or right you can adjust that but then when he goes into high it travels straight you don't really know so being able to set beginner regulation on the travel things like that you can't do it properly without one of these so for heavy equipment field mechanic if you're gonna be out there i think these are the the specialty tools so this is number four on the on the specialty tools i don't think it's and it might even be number five like it's it's one of those things that four and five on my five tool list here they're pretty close to whether you need them or don't need them as a first time field mechanic you might not be going into it on this so but just think about it as far as you know where your tool list is and if you can afford it this is one i would say you need to have number five so and maybe this one should be number four and probably for a first time guy this one might be number four if you're just getting into a truck because this is something that maybe you should have in the shop too like you they probably have one in the tool cage and you're gonna borrow it or whatever but you probably could have this on the in your toolbox before and it's pretty cheap right so you can pick these up at harbor freight really cheap and this is just one of the air vac pumps so think caterpillar has an actual part number for a fitting that does the same thing they've got an air and it just it's a venturi basically you get air going in air comes out creates a vacuum off of this fitting here so pick yourself up in airback start building the adapters this one here happens to be for uh let's see i think this one fits link belt john deere and hitachi can on the hydraulic tank you just take the vent off thread this on or screw this on with the rubber gasket for the van and then just plug your compressor in and start pulling a vacuum you can change hoses o-rings things like that without losing big amounts of oil so uh yeah i'd probably say this should probably be number four not number five so you know as far as being in the in the shop you'd it'd be useful there so don't hesitate to buy one of those as one two or three so if you can afford it you're harbor freight they're pretty cheap so now mind you these are things that i'm saying are the five things that you should have on a truck and if you don't have these you're probably going to run into then this and it's above and beyond your standard hand tools so you know you should have your end wrenches your sockets if you guys have seen my tool tray video that's a pretty basic amount of tools that if you have that whether it's in metric or or in standard i run in a metric world for the most part so i run a lot of metrics and that's what my main tool trade is metric so but build one for yourself as far as the tool kit that you're gonna grab and go i'll try and put the try and put the link in the video or at least put it in the comments for the to that video in the comments so yeah thanks for watching and have a good week god bless
