hey guys hope you're having a good one five tips for the top five things you need to buy if you want to be the best product photographer you can be [Music] now this isn't the most expensive thing we're not talking about like massive lighting rigs we're not talking about six thousand dollar cameras this is the five things i reckon you should be buying if you want to be better at product photography let's just get into this right number one fishing line honestly i think this is one of the best things you could purchase if you're getting into product photography it'll help you get things elevated it'll help you uh you know hang things with a barely visible line uh this particular fishing line was like three dollars from kmart or at my local big box store it's honestly been a life saver so let's just have a look a few of the images that i've created with this uh being able to hang products being able to hang some of the props around the products extremely versatile extremely strong and honestly super easy to cut out if you're doing product photography super simple in lightroom or in photoshop to remove a tiny little bit of fishing line and if you're working on video uh if you're doing product videography uh after effects there's a super simple little wireframe remover tool in after effects you can make frame by frame fishing line disappears so fast it's not funny the second thing you should be buying if you want to be a better product photographer where did i put it phone call big white phone call costs barely anything right couple of dollars go to your local art supplies business uh you can get it from amazon you can get it from pretty much anywhere online foam core is going to be your friend if you don't have the lighting you can already see like if i point this towards some of the lights that i've got you can see how it changes the light if i put it down underneath me you can see how it's actually changing the light you can modify the light with a simple piece of phone call you can cut this you could put slits in this if you want to do some product photography and pretend that you've got a window an amazingly cheap bit of equipment that will help your product photography get to the next level next up clips clips do everything so what do i mean by clips these things these things are a lifesaver so big ones [Music] small ones if you're from australia i got these from bunnings there's like a pack of 16 they go from this size all the way down to smaller than this size now any big box hardware store lowe's canadian tire amazon will have something like these these things do everything from holding backdrop papers down to holding products where they need to be held fantastic segway let's go to the next product if you are doing product photography at home or if you're starting to break into product photography one of the things you're going to learn very fast is lighting so if you're trying to shoot clear bottles if you're trying to shoot some sort of product that is highly reflective you're going to find that nine times out of ten the lighting that you use is too harsh or too strong and you need to be able to diffuse that a little bit so my segue from the clips was looking clips holding my diffuser uh diffusers are going to change your life so this one is it's kind of like massive right like to see later this diffuser was from amazon it's a newer brand i think like bugger or 20 20 something dollars it comes it's massive it folds up it's so big that i can't even get it and hang on let's see if i can actually fold this up while i'm talking to you um stuff it diffuses are an amazing thing for bending light diffusing light as your namesake would be holding it off a light source a little bit and making sure that you're getting just a nicer softer look and feel from your lighting so your diffuser can be used as a barrier between whatever light source that you've got it could be the sun it could be a studio light it could be a flash and having just a little distance or a little gap in that diffuser would drastically change how the light hits your product so let's have a look at a particular product right now we've got some what are we going to use some dr pickles body wash so let's have a look how that kind of fits and feels with that diffuser and how much it actually changes the light source uh hitting that product guys so we're going to do this dr pickles body wash so i've got it sitting here on the uh the product photography table right now that table has got a bit of black uh black paper black stuff on it now what i've got turned on is you can see i've got this big light box here and if i spin around there's a big big big light box up the top here now if we actually look at that product i'm just going to turn the camera around we actually look at that product you can see the effect here of a massive big shiny blob of light and you can see the other soft box there so i'm just going to start with turning off that big soft box now what what you're left with is there's actually a bit of a reflection there still which is that whole light that you can see open there and then you've got your reflection of that one that soft box there so if i turn that soft box off as well obviously it's very dark but you're left with now just the light from the window and we can see on the background that we've actually got the light from the window as well so i'm just going to put the camera on the tripod for a second and we're going to start modifying this and playing around with the light on this and we'll get the diffuser in there to show you the difference of how it looks alright so the camera's on the tripod now this is the kind of the angle that we take the final photo in and you can still see that there is a massive big uh reflection there from the window so what we're going to do to start with i'm going to put that window down so now we're pretty much in pure darkness right you can't really even see the product i could bump the iso up dramatically and you'd start seeing it but i really want to keep the iso quite low uh here's what happens when i start bumping the iso up but what's going to happen is it's going to start getting really grainy so we're going to get back to quite a low iso we're actually going to put it back to auto and let it do its thing but then watch what happens if we put that massive light on so obviously we've got a really bright light there and you can see that we've got that big washed out bit of diffused light there so we're going to turn that one back off for a second let's now turn on the little softbox and once again you can see it's quite blown out on the side there but if we turn the intensity down on that softbox so yeah we can start sort of seeing a really long sort of finished light to that but it's still quite bright and quite nasty so what we're going to do is now get that diffuser and put that diffuser next to that light so as we're moving that diffuser in there you can see that it's kind of changed the lights the light on a little bit and it's made it a little bit softer but it's still quite bright so if we move this back from that diffuser and start turning it back down again we can start sort of shaping that light and showing how we want that light to be shown and this is where having a bit of core flute or even better something that blocks light completely so i've got this black kind of bit of vinyl here and if we put this black bit of vinyl over the light box see how we can start to shape and modify the light that's coming out now now unfortunately you can see that orange line that we've got there as well that's going to be a different video but that orange line that we've got there if i put my body in the way of it that's literally the fluorescent lights or the lights coming from the rest of our building or the rest of our office but just by blocking that with my body and putting a bit of card across the reflector there or across the across the actual soft box having that diffuser there it's given us a really nice soft looking line now obviously this environment isn't the best when you look closely you can see still see you know reflections from the window you can see the uh the other soft box which is turned off it's it's not the perfect image but just that use of that deflector if we took that deflector away even keeping that same shot you can see that just gets that little bit brighter and if we remove that this target that's how harsh the light is even coming from a softer box of a light that's turned right down so that's a gorox 60 l and that's currently turned down to 19 so it's not really showing much light but through that diffuser it actually makes it a lot softer and a lot nicer for a reflective bottle like this dr pickles bottle all right last product of the five products that i think every photographer should have if they're going to do product photography this one's just behind here give me a second that's it acrylic a big flat piece of acrylic now they come clear they come black they come red they come many different colors this one's quite thick if you look at it amazing for putting down on backdrop paper putting down on paper or uh poster board i think they call it different colored papers to get different color reflections and different colors uh this is amazing then you can get this wet you're not ruining your backdrop paper you're getting beautiful reflections of products so a lot of those amazon products that you see are a lot of those ecom products like you can see even my reflections here right now like that's how they do it they might have a white piece of paper underneath and then they have this if you want you can take a simple flat piece of acrylic like this and turn it into a box it's very hard for you to see obviously but this particular product has i've cut it up i got a router at home and or a saw and i i gave it like a 30 mil edge on it you can see that edge on there and it means now that we can float water in there so i'll show you some of the products that we shot with this uh the aesop spec ads that we did had this acrylic box and it allows us once again to change the color of the paper that sits underneath it fill it with water and it's very shallow and it gives us that beautiful water look and feel of our product photos guys that's it five products that you should have if you're going to be doing product photography now they're not expensive they're relatively cheap you can buy them and get them delivered from a big box department store or a big box uh like what am i trying to say big box hardware store phone call fishing line clippy thingies diffusers and acrylic sheets that's all you need to get started there's been a few examples of how i use those as we've talked about this but honestly that's that's what i've got to start with lighting would be a whole nother thing the camera you use is a whole nother thing but there are five things that you can use that are nice and cheap for product photography i hope that's helped [Music] you
