(piano music) (screen whooshing) - What's going on, guys, (bubble popping) This is Qasi. Welcome to another epic video, (text whooshing) And you might read the title and say, five easy steps, that's too many steps to be easy. Trust me, after when you see what we're gonna be creating, these steps are gonna be nothing, is gonna be a piece of cake, and the way I'm gonna break it down, you know how I do it, so it's gonna be all practical. There is no fluff here. And think of some of your favorite movies when it comes to looks. "Saving Private Ryan", think of "Sin City", all this high contrast grungy look, think of the movie "300", it's super pushed, crazy, there's silver-ish or golden highlights, and then the blacks are just kind of crushed. All of that is a by-product of a bleach bypass look. So if I were to characterize this look, I would say gritty, grungy, dirty, those are the words that come to mind. Now, that said, the beauty of color grading is that you can always throw your own spin on it. So for instance, look at this shot. There is a right amount of dirtiness to the image with the grain and everything, but at the same time, it's extremely clean. It's crisp, right? So that's my flare on this particular story. At the end of the day, it's going to come down to either you're selling a product, or you're trying to tell a story through the art of color. So keep those things in mind. (screen whooshing) And if you casually color grade your projects, but want to learn more about nodes and how to build a proper node tree, you came to the right place. In this free training, you're not only gonna learn everything about nodes, you will also learn to build the perfect node tree, regardless of the project that you're working on. I will end the session with an extended Q and A. These questions came from you guys. Click the link (text whooshing) in the description to sign up (text whooshing) for this free training. And guys, if you're enjoying the content, you know what to do. smash that Like button, (button smacking) subscribe to my channel, (button whooshing and popping) for more awesomeness. (button clicking) (bell ringing) Make sure you're following me on Instagram. Let's roll the intro. (upbeat music) (screen whooshing) let's get the show on the road. Five easy steps to get a bleach bypass look. It's personally one of my favorite looks, and I'm so excited to be sharing my process. So, first thing, we're just gonna go under our project settings, under Color Management. I'm going to go from DaVinci YRGB to DaVinci Color Managed, and in here, I'm going to select DaVinci Wide Gamut, just so we have more room to play with. And since this is shot in RAW, it will already decode and turn it into a Rec-709 color space. Everything is converted and it's ready to go. If you want to learn more about different color spaces in Divinci Resolve, check out the link above. Okay, let's jump right in. So first of all, we're just gonna build out our node tree, and then I'm gonna take you through different steps. So I'm gonna have my first node reserved for highlights, my second node is going to be my primaries, then this is where the magic is gonna happen, and we're gonna create a layer mixer. I'm gonna have another node for a step, and then I'm gonna have three nodes down here. So you might think this is way more than five steps, what are you talking about? Once I break it down, it's gonna make a lot more sense. So step number one, right-click on the layer mixer, and change the composite mode to Overlay, and all of a sudden, boom, you get this. This is the most crucial step. You cannot create a bleach bypass look without this step. Second step, go to the node above the one in the bottom in your layer mixer, and just go ahead and de-sat it to -100. Okay, so I pulled out all the saturation, basically zero, not -100. I just brought the saturation down to zero, okay? So far so good. These two steps that I just showed you pretty much is the formula for a bleach bypass. Already, we're getting the silver-ish quality in our highlights. We're getting these really deep high contrast look, so it's already there. Now, the other three steps are basically cherry on top to really hone it in and give it your own signature. So here, what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna go in my offset, I'm gonna start raising it up until it starts to look half decent, where I want everything to be. So even something like that, I'm happy with that, okay? So I'm gonna leave my offset right here, and now, what I'm gonna do is I'm going to grab this eyedropper for white balance, and click on his shirt, and boom, all of a sudden, we have our white balance. So this is where we were before, and then step number three is to balance everything out, just do our primaries, the basic stuff. So far, so good. I'm not gonna do anything else here. Now, I'm gonna jump to my node number six, and here, we're gonna go into our log wheels, and this is where the magic happens. I'm gonna take my highlights, I'm gonna raise them to about 26-ish, and nothing happens, right? Really, nothing really happens besides this highlight right here, so we're going to go ahead in our high range, and we're gonna control that. I'm gonna dial it back until I start grabbing a part of his face, not everything, okay? I don't want to grab everything. I just want to start attacking some of the detail on his face to really get some detail out. Look at this, this is looking really good. So now, this is blowing out. That's why we have our highlight recovery nodes, so it's gonna take care of that. We don't have to worry about it. Right now, I'm focusing just on this. We're getting really nice information, and there's a lot of color detail that's coming out, too. Now, the next step is going to be my shadows in the log wheels, and I'm going to crush it. I'm going to bring it down. Okay, because this is the whole thing about the bleach bypass look. It's the high end and the bottom end. It's like the contrast really need to punch you in the face. So for now, I'm not going to mess with my actual colors in the shadows. I'm going to leave it as is. I'm gonna go back to my second node, and now, I'm going to switch it back to my left gamma gain, and I'm gonna take my left and kind of cool it off, bring it down. There's still a lot of red sitting in there, so I want to take that out. So I'm just gonna go in there and pull this down a little bit. I personally like to be just a bit more on the cyan or teal side, but I don't want to overly stylize it. I want to keep it really crisp and clean, so I'm just gonna keep it here. So if I do before this change, after, I mean, we're really cleaning it up. Now, one more thing I want to do here is just add a bit more saturation to start seeing more separation in our image. So obviously, go too far, and then dial it back until it looks pretty good. And to me, this looks pretty good, right? So, I mean, where are we at at saturation, it's 59. This is looking great, so I'm gonna leave it right here. Let's start naming these So it makes a bit more sense. Two was de-sat, this was just nothing, these are our log wheels. So this is where we're at right now. And now, the last step to creating a perfect recipe for a bleach bypass look is grunging it up. You really need to grunge it up. So the first step in accomplishing that would be going under your sharpening tool and bringing it down to 47 to really sharpen up your image. So obviously, I tell you guys all the time, when we go into a blur, and we minus the blur, we are basically sharpening up our image, and you guys can see that. Now, I'm gonna go under my last node, and again, let's name this, too. So Sharpen, and now I'm gonna go under my last one, and this one is going to be my film grain, and this is not going to be an ordinary grain, okay? You have to really be extreme here and push it. So I'm gonna go under my 35 millimeter 400-T, but this is just gonna be a starting point, then I'm gonna take my size and I'm gonna crank it, and then I'm going to take my strength, and I'm gonna crank it, really crank it, okay? So if I do before and after, this is what I'm trying to tell you. It's all about, look at this right here. It looks so good. It looks so filmic, and for the bleach bypass look, you have to be unapologetic. You really need to get in there, okay? Now, I'm gonna do two extracurricular steps that are not necessary, but that are just going to add more juice and give it a bit more flair. So obviously, these were the five steps we have already created this look and perfected it, but now, let's go into the first node, and I'm going to take advantage of the DaVinci Resolve 17 tools, so I'm going to jump into my highlight dynamic range, I'm just going to go under my Highlights right here, and all I'm focusing on is this. I want to bring back detail here, I don't care about this. If this is blown out, it's fine, because it's a light, it's specular highlights, it's okay to have that blown out. I want to bring back information here. So I'm going to go under my highlights, and I'm gonna start dialing it back until there's detail recovery in that spot, and we can see it, we can confirm it right here. Boom, that information came back. If I do before and after, look at how much detail came back and how good this looks. A lot of detail came back in there too, but I'm particularly excited about this area right here, and then another great thing about it is that it did not affect the face or anything at all. It just focused on that, so that's why I'm loving this new HDR palette. I'm gonna be putting out a video dedicated to that specific palette in multiple different situations. It's gonna come out soon. So one more step that I'm gonna do, I'm gonna go under my node number seven, I'm gonna go in here, type in glow, and I'm just going to drop that puppy on, and I'm not gonna leave it in its normal state, so what I'm gonna do is let's open effects back in here on my control surface, and I'm just gonna go ahead in the composite mode, and I'm gonna keep switching it until I get to soft light, which is my favorite. I'm gonna take my threshold, crank it all the way back, and I'm gonna take my spread, and I'm going to crank it all the way back, because once again, we're not going for a soft angelic look. You can, if you want to, but here, I really want it to be a hard effect. So this is where we're at, but one thing that I'm not liking is that how much of the highlights it's grabbing, so that's not the point. That's not what I'm going for. So before I even change that, let's go under our Global Blend and try to blend it a little bit. So I'm gonna come back, I'm gonna leave it somewhere around here. I'm really liking how much color it's adding to my skin, which is really cool. And now, I'm going to go under my qualifier, I'm gonna add some softness to my high-end, and then I'm gonna hit shift H so you guys can see what we're grabbing, and I'm gonna start coming back. You know what, I'm gonna hit shift H again, and just really focus on this, because right now, you know what I'm looking for? Right here. I wanna get the detail back on his shirt, and that's where I wanna stop, because I do want the skin to be affected. Even something like that, if I do before and after, again, remember I told you, this is gonna be a small step. This is not gonna be anything crazy, but this is that one step that really brings everything together. It just all adds up, okay? So this particular node was Glow. This right here are extracurricular, you can take it or leave it. I think it makes a huge difference. I mean, this was looking great, and then after that looks so much better, but those were the other five steps that really created this look. So as always, I'm gonna grab this whole thing, I'm gonna kill it, we're gonna go from where we started to where we ended up. So our first step was to create a bleach bypass effect, so we did that here, and then in our composite mode, we selected Overlay, and then we went to this node number three, and we desaturated it to zero, then we moved on to our second node, we did our primaries to just get everything kosher, then we went to our node number six, we used our log wheels to just start cranking and giving it more juice, then I showed you how to grunge it up by adding sharpening, and then just be unapologetic with your grain, and then we did some damage recovery, so I went into my first node and did highlight recovery to just bring all that information back. And then finally, we went to create another node and added glow, and just give it a bit more juice. Again, this is going to be take it or leave it. I personally like it, so I'm gonna leave it. We can always go back to our second node and take our saturation and bring it back if we just want to keep it this cool silver-ish quality. we can keep it somewhere around here. So I went from 59 to 57-ish, and then this is going to be our final look. Let's check it out in full screen. (screen whooshing) (piano music) (screen whooshing) So there you have it. And honestly, I got into color grading for this specific look. I mean, it's one of my favorite looks. I don't use it as often as I used to, but I used to just abuse it, and I would just get yelled at, because they would just know that if I'm on a project, then I must be applying a bleach bypass look. So give it a shot, have fun with it, do not forget to watch the training. I'm telling you, you need to know everything about DaVinci Resolve node tree in order to create really sick looks. And by watching my videos, that's one part of the equation, but a big missing piece is actually knowing when to use which node, and all of that is covered in that free training.
