helpful lock-picker here the video I have for you today is on how to rekey your door lock if you do not have the key I want to first show you this is an example of a pinning tray this has key pins for quick set and Schlage locks it also has some additional springs and driver pins you can buy a smaller version of this online pretty cheaply for basic home-wrecking needs then i have the lock we're going to rekey this is a defiant Breann lock it's a quick set so yeah I'm just a regular residential deadbolt a repenting tray and then I have a key blank the key we're going to repend to a set of tweezers to plug followers an aluminum and a plastic one these plastic ones are cheap and readily available a coarse Shem a pickle fork this helps remove the clips on back of some of the locks but we may not need it today where this is an example of something you may need a digital caliper which can make measuring the key pins a lot easier a sharpie and a key gauge now if you don't have a pinning tray what you can do is you can just take a piece of corrugated cardboard and just peel it back and then you can use that as your pinning tray and you can put each pin in and it will hold them separately very nicely the first thing we're gonna do is try to shim this lock open since we do not have the key in order to get this lock taken apart the lock will need to be opened so the first step we're gonna need is one get a key blank for the lock this is a kw1 keep link for this quick set branded lock you can get these readily available at any hardware store pretty easily next is a quorum which is a thin piece of metal you may not have the core shim available to you you can buy them online however if you do not have one you can take one of the security tags out of the back of a DVD or blu-ray cut it open and extract the small pieces of metal and those work just as well the next step is going to be taking off the tail piece on your lock a lot of locks come differently some will have one like this that you can depress a little pin and unscrew others will have what's called a c-clip which is a little clip that goes on the back that you can push off with the pickle fork some have Torx screws some are attachment screws every lock is different that is beyond the scope of this video to explain how to take off the back piece of every lock but once you're able to get that we can move on to the next step on this lock I'm going to simply just unscrew it and then we will be ready now the next step we're going to start the shimming process now that you got the back of the lock off the first step you're going to want to do is take your caution and stick it on the top here on many locks you can see on the top here this is where the driver pens are being pushed down in the Bible so you want these right above the plug where the driver pens are now that you got the Shem in the back of the lock what we're going to need to do is take our key blank and insert it directly into the key way and what we're going to do is push on the shim lightly and slowly pull out the key and the shim will follow as the key comes out and then you always want to push back on the key until you feel resistance because you need to have a very small margin between the key and the shim for the shim to catch in between the key pens and the driver pens as you advance it and now the lock has successfully been shimmed open you can see it as evidenced by the core turning now that the lock is open you can remove the shim then we will proceed to the next step just be careful now that the backs off the lock you do not want to push the cylinder out accidentally now that we've successfully shimmed our lock open we're ready to take out the key pens so we need to make sure that we have the plug turned about 90 degrees we're going to take our plug follower we're going to line the plug follower up on the flat part with the driver pins and then we're going to take out the plug I like to orient it this way where the top of the keyway is so that the driver pins will not fall out as I take it out so all you got to do is you just got to just push it through and then you're going to leave the plug follower inside and then inside here you have your key pins and we are going to set them down right here for a moment now that we have the plug removed we have two options we can one decode the lock and make a original key to this lock or two we can riku the lock to a new key the next step is going to be removing the key pins what we're going to do is take our key blank and we're going to insert it and we'll take our tweezers and we'll remove the key pins one at a time keeping one is the one closest to where the blank inserted so we'll take out key pin one we'll put it right in chamber one now twos not able to be grabbed so we'll just drop that and put it in pin two same for pin 3 for and five first we're going to go over how to decode the key pens to make a original key to the lock doing so is great because you'll be able to make a key to the lock the original way that was made so these key pens are quick set key pens they often come cut to six deaths and all you need to do is know what the depths are so we can see how long each key pen is here and that will correspond to the depth cut that you will need the easiest way to measure the length of the key pens is to buy a digital caliper this was a inexpensive one I bought online and it works very well so the first thing we need to do is measure the keep em and then we will write down what the cut is I have my piece of cardboard here handy and I will write it down with the marker so we're going to start off with key pen number one and turn it into the caliper and that is 0.24 five so one is zero point two four five and we will do this going down each key pin now let's match these up against our depths and we'll see what the key cut is so number one is 0.24 5 which is closest to a 4 so 1 will be a 4 number 2 is point one nine one which is closest to a two number three is point one nine two which is closest to a two as well number four is 0.24 five which is closest to a four and number five is 0.16 nine which is closest to a 1 so our key cuts going to be a four two two four one and one thing to remember is that these may vary from the standard however a deviation is expected because manufacturing tolerances are not 100% now that we got our key cut is a four to two for one what we can do is go down to a local locksmith that has a code cutter which is a machine that can cut a key to the depths that you specify you will go down and say I would like a kw1 key cut two for two two for one and they will be able to make a key to your lock now one thing you can do is try to write this down and remember it this code cut is essentially the password to your door lock now if you ever need a new key cut and you ever get locked out you can just tell the locksmith what the code is and they'll be able to get you in quickly and effectively now I'm going to go over the second option which is rekeying the lock to a different key maybe you lost the key and you don't feel comfortable having a key made to the same lock you'd like to change it out here is what we can do you can go to the locksmith and just ask them for a random key to be cut and they can make that and then you can rekey it yourself in order to do that you're going to need to get the key and then you can use a key gauge and then you measure the key and you can see what the size of the key cuts are you just start with pin 1 which is the one closest to the bow of the key which is the part you hold with your hand and then you go through and you measure them one at a time so this one's measuring a 5 and the next one's measuring a 4 and then the next ones measuring a 1 and then the next ones measuring a four again and then the last one is measuring a three now we can write down that now so we will not forget we got a five four one four three and as last time remember that that is essentially the password to your key so now that we know what key pins were going to need we're going to take our tweezers here and go through our repenting kit and take the appropriately sized pins so we have a 5 for 1 1 3 so I'm just gonna go into my tray and grab them so here's a 5 it's this red colored 1 4 is green one is gold 4 is green and 3 is silver a lot of the repenting kits come color coded because it will make it easier for you to differentiate between the sizes the next step is going to be inserting the new key pins into the plug the first thing I like to do is take my new key and put it straight into the keyway and then I'll set it down I'm going to take my tweezers and I'm going to put the key pins in order one is going to start where the key inserts you want to make sure that they're nice and plush as they go in if they are sticking up or recessed that would show that you have not measured correctly and the lock would not open now you can see that the top is nice and flush and this is the working key with the working key pens now we have covered how to decode a lock and rekey a lock the next step is going to be reinserting the plug back into the lock now we're going to put the plug back into the lock you can see that the plug follower is still where we left it you want to verify one more time that the flat part is going to be covering where the driver pins are and you're going to take your lock I'm going to insert the key pins about 90 degrees so it is opposite of the driver pins and you're just going to push it through and now you're going to turn the key to make sure it operates the lock at this time do not attempt to pull the key out because you may pull the whole core out and then have to start completely over while holding the core in place with the key the next step we're going to do is put back on what was holding the core in before we started may it be a c-clip or it could be a little tail piece I'm going to reattach mine now and once that in is then the core will not pull out and you will not have to worry about that anymore and now you'll be able to remove your key as a recap what we covered today was how to rekey or decode a lock if we do not have the working key the first step we needed to do was shim the lock with the key blank afterwards we needed to remove the core and to decode the lock we measured the key pins and wrote down the cut and got a code cut key to operate the lock and then replace the original key pins secondly we covered how to rekey the lock if we decided we needed a new key first you need is a new key to rekey to then measure the key and then make sure all the appropriate key pins line up flush and then you can reinsert the plug and then the lock should operate the last thing you do is put the securing tail piece back on and then you can remove the key here's the key that riri key to and it operates the lock smoothly
