1700 miles in a Tiny Speedboat - Part 20

welcome back to another episode of going around the UK very slowly in this tiny [Music] speedboat getting good win ready to go it's all look in very sh shape support teams here ready to go ready to go 10:24 on a Thursday morning it's BBC Radio Scotland Harry is currently circumnavigating Britain in a tiny speedboat only slightly bigger than your average bathtub and uh this coming week he's in Scotland facing perhaps his toughest test yet on the long road to Scotland Sun's shining but probably not for long soon we're going to be picking up Charlie well big heels in the lodge there's a topless man picked up Charlie say hello Charlie hello Charlie cracking night sleep that's s not too bad is you always [Music] do taking a wrong [Music] turn we're back in scrapster it's getting more and more kind of patchy isn't it yeah I like the patches Charlie is joining me to Face Off ears and continue on around the UK and the tiny speed boat let's go Charlie let's go I think we need to uh repaint this goodwi yes I did actually do that a year ago but maybe need to redo it maybe a stencil invest in a Sten hey no it's got to be hand done some patches of sunshine the sun might pop out hopefully it won't rain let's go he guys hold on Charlie I've just remembered as well I've got to got to do got the [Music] bun this is dir [Music] head dunum Head Lighthouse oh God right I hope that's the worst [Music] beit we're cruising now we're over the worst next up John this is the man of may he going past the men of May rocks we've done 9 miles we're going on the inside of stroma which is a little island over there and I think it's it's got an old deserted village on it we've quickly popped over to have a look at the island of stroma where there is a very old deserted village I think all the villages left in the 19th century but um it's quite a sight a little eerie but it's very calm here so does anyone live in those houses are no I don't think so and then next St J Gro we're running late [Music] [Music] beautiful that looks like Copenhagen a colorful houses LM pleasure pleasure Beach L J Jon gr pleasure Beach I just hadn't done the cables up in the back and they've all fallen out oh forgot how scary it is out there when it when the waves go big I was like what why am I back charge everything and you got to pay for car parking Mard Park three over there well we made it Charlie did you get like some flashbacks I did but you know what I did think it's not as bad I mean it was obviously nothing like K Ro it was sort of reminding me like oh yeah some some of this isn't that much fun hey stop that there it is J Gro so Land's End is a long way 874 mil to Land's End this is the most northeasterly point L end is 874 mil that way L's end was probably 3 years ago so land into Jon Gros in 3 years in a tiny speed booat that's end to end of the Mainland well on Charlie hold on Harry hold on let's have some chips and then crack on J A Gro chips and haggus how is it Charlie where have you cycled from 10 have you really yeah 874 miles my route is about a th000 wow it's taking me about 13 days oh so that tells you where to go yeah that's my SAT I was about 15 I just said to myself oh I'll do that one day I'll do that sometime never did it brilliant you've done it this is my 50th birthday present to myself EXC are you going to cycle back again no on the train yeah we're heading out from Jon GRS we're just going to go and have a little look aren't we Charlie little investigate yeah we'll have a look if it looks rough we're going to uh stay here God it's good to have this brok again right d good to be head Charlie Duncan who is that what it's called coming around the last Headland of the pentland first Duncan be before we will be heading south yeah apparently gets pretty choppy around here incredible rocks down here sedimentary my dear Watson you look like a real hardy seaf fairing yeah a while ago I met one of TV's greatest presenters a man called Timmy Malik and he said to me I did he said to me you need to go to duncanby Stacks cuz I missed them when I went around the UK on my bike get go and see them we're here those are the stacks [Music] every moment we spend driving this way now is a little bit closer to home home is stet we're on the home straight yeah we're on the home straight I mean what's that heading down there is that Wick we're heading south Charlie South mate that is pretty amazing isn't it yeah I'm going to make it sound more like I'm more amazed than you honestly no I I was expecting it to be it head was the worst bit this was actually [Music] fine this is our spot for night support team's arrived hello in the car how's the Rena going very nice Charlie would you like to try using the new front storage system you might need to yeah it's quite early there he goes right looking there look now we're talking holy Christmas the tent is it dry it's dry tent isn't that good though it's really good hello hello oh in Scotland Run now going to Camp here the night where do you reckon we could put a tent up you put it in the park in the park there's a park up there but we just that we own that house do you what this massive one yeah other people come there do they yeah oh well maybe that is the place then where gentlemen start your tents start your tents we're in h Keys harbor not far from Wick it's been a cracking day quite nice wi for B tomorrow then we head towards in vaness support team's been doing a good job driving along well done thank you very much red sky at night Sailor's Delight night Chris night night night night morning Charlie it's sunny out there is it it was quite nippy last night wasn't it yeah really cold well here we are we're on Keys Beach boats over in Keys Harbor let's get the porridge on let's go I wake up bud a lot actually oh did you yeah just cuz it was quite cold yeah well I got my jumper on yeah same yeah I think tomorrow I'll probably put on some trousers and socks yeah maybe wlly hat this is summer but summer in Scotland how was a nice sleep very nice ah Keith [Music] speach it's a lovely morning over there is Kei Harbor and we just been camping up here on Keith Beach amongst the World War I what looked like kind of anti-tank defenses this is a very shallow Beach it was probably an ideal Target for enemy Invasion during the second world war so um these dudes definitely seem like they're a lot of old anti-tank Big Blocks just scattered along the beach we've been using the old uh defenses as very handy camping tables right coffee's ready I think these are World War II defenses oh right but I might be wrong there's the [Music] team there's good wind ready to go all right loading her up bye Chris okay bye Keys all right off we [Music] go this place is uh full of old castles around here really is the castle [Music] Coastline just going past Bui Castle no right we're just at VI curly Castle it's a crazy ruin up there we managed to get in the pool Here Charlie hav't we I mean there's the castle front door cool cuz it looks like it's sort of emerging from the Rocks it's literally out on its own little Headland this castle and it looks very similar to these um SL is it smashed up oh Jones just hit the rock and been in the water over there he's got it he's got it right we were looking at this old castle ruin up here and I bloody flew into the bloody rocks but Charlie's got it hooray okay so we drash the Drone what's broken on it s does it have the memory card in the side oh it's not got a camera on anymore it's got a camera but it's kind of mangled Drone 2 is gone but we've recovered the footage so we're up on last time it was an old secondhand drone maybe it's time to buy a new one it was just complete pilot error you're an old secondhand drone I'm an old second hand drone on on me the the camera's hanging off it actually the Drone could be repaired do you think maybe it was the ghosts of this castle that were like don't fil me yes how dare you and the wind sort of like caught up and flung you against the Rocks you're probably going to get really close to some something exciting a bit of a bugger but um never mind we got to try and see if we can get the support team to go and find a new drone never flew very well so um I think it had a problem with its Compass anyway so I'm blaming the compass all right onward towards Wick and hopefully we can find a new drone still right we're just coming past NOS Head Lighthouse into Wick no drone Wick it Charlie's Got a theory that the ghost of the castle took out the Drone which may be true so perhaps we had a uh narrow Escape soon we're going to pop into Wick see if we can find a drone shop Wicked wi good little choppy here hopefully once we get around this Headland that's RI tour Wick Harbor this is rib goodwi okay no one home they don't want to know mate just give it up haror calling you used under half a tank on that one sort of mad I should put so you think good weather for the next few days well it's looking fairly settled as good as you get up here I would say flattened right off and it's giv very little wind for the next few days that makes me feel a lot better Charlie don't you think got a good recommendation about the steps yeah while ago steps yeah say goes back over a 100 years ago when the Hing fishing used to be a big big thing up here and the the boats used to land the catch basically on a Ledge and then there's about I think it's 360 steps goes up from this ledge all way up the cliff the wife us to go down and pick the fish up take them take them into work and and they sold them there so it pretty hard life yeah people steal fish for Herring no no there's no hurting fishing here now at all no no it's all done by big pic boats in the middle of the sea now never get a chance to get in here really W used to be the biggest Hing fishing port in Europe at one time really 2,000 boats used to work out here you know so in the summer time but it's a it's all gone Di and distant past now I'm afraid thanks for having us we'll head to the Drone shop most people hly Pub but Harry is currently circumnavigating Britain in a tiny speedboat only slightly bigger than your average bathtub and uh this coming week he's in Scotland facing perhaps his toughest test yet so the journey is Big the engine is quite big but the boat itself is not Harry it's not it's a lot of people would describe it as a dingy um but it's it's a sort of LoveHate relationship probably it's um I do toy with the idea of getting a bigger Bo but somehow it's just it's it's it's like sitting on a big Lilo and you can get into tiny little Coes and very shallow water all right we're in the nerve center with Ian looking at the weather well basically looking at this so you can control the camera from there yeah yeah I can zoom it it and then tilted and everything so we got a a full view of the harbor that was out there before lunchtime it was all white horses up there yeah right but it come down a good piece now yeah great see some little splits here yeah fine nothing like it was a proper race with it yeah before before lunch time was you know it was white white tops all over the place so conditions much better now still be a bit bouncy but nothing like what was at least that'll be carrying Us in the right direction TI oh T will be with you yeah that's right yeah excellent service looking after us saving us thank you very much no problem I I hate to point this out Harry but you're getting older like the rest of us as well I know a few people have commented on the YouTube channel that I am getting grayer as has the the waves take their toll so you've been up the west coast of Scotland already that bit's done how did that go oh I mean it was really it's so lovely because I started on the 10s in London and you know I just dreamt of sort of kind of exploring tiny Islands the waters around those islands so just just incredible um the weather is you know obviously quite tricky to um time but when the sun comes out it's it's really amazing but we unfortunately came a Cropper going around Kate Roth the waves we we were kind of getting Airborne over these sheer mountains of water put a hole in the boat so it's meant we had to then sort of abandon and then fix it and there's a lot of trips to the Boatyard in [Music] between how's [Music] that okay we're at the famous steps where these four women would have carried the tering all the way up the cliffs I mean I guess the only way up up this very steep you want to go up the steps Charlie Charlie's going to go up the steps we going to get in I'm going get you in here Charlie okay I'm like the new drone 282 is is that right well maybe I lost count one it's nice few there isn't it it's good yeah well a good trip thanks right right let's go down speed hey the fist on the board pull some cool Donuts [Music] Harry just it all right how was that was good getting some good good uh shots of of um onward right we're chucking our way down the uh Cate Nest Coastline here little choppy hopefully it's going to flatten out we've only got a certain amount of fuel cuz this is not efficient running we're heading to cromy oh this is cap size the right we just stopped here at Dum beef bait it's um bit choppier than we were hoping so I don't know if we'll make it to chomy today but we have got um a very important drink to enjoy whilst in Dum be Bay the iron Brew Scotland's most favorite drink probably um what about Bast wine other than bfast Wine although that's made in Devon that's it me have an iron Brew Charlie thanks M there an amazing cast here which looks like it's someone's house um we may have uh some of the most advanced equipment on board Goodwin but um somebody didn't tie the fender on properly so we've had to resort to this tire we found on a beach iron I think it's got a lot of iron in it which is probably good for us suits the boat right the right color oh look at the color yeah you can get some sponsorship get iron Brew written up the side the king of the castle up there is probably s sipping his iron brew and looking out at us and thinking God that looks like on with [Music] Char that an action shot we've just done Dum B we've done Dum B Sun's popping out all right we're just coming into berrydale this um lovely little Bay with some old cting sort of cottages lovely Beach actually I wonder if you can get in there we don't have a [Music] this is like mid tastic oh actually a river that goes all the way up it's got amazing Bridge TR this here should we go over to those steps get your Fender out mate okay I'm here with the steps what a perfect spot look at these old steps so here we are in berdale on this very old key here and the water just slips in here and up the river these are lmar trust holiday cottages this is so calm and peaceful here we're just running away to put the tent up maybe up there by that castle and you reckon we'll be able to get out of there in the morning um hopefully it'll be low but we might be able to push it out you should be all right yeah you should be all right I mean it's such a brilliant Harbor isn't it it's yeah lovely spot lovely spot your mat's uh scaling oh he's going up he was like maybe we can camp up there is that an old castle up there it is yeah is it yeah yeah it is indeed you made it but will we be able to get down at 6:00 in the morning with a tent two people on the bridge at any time no jumping no bouncing on the bridge no loitering on the bridge I'm a loiterer oh it's that Indiana Jones mate oh my God very rickly no indie no okay we made it [Music] across I'd like to be and the support team should be here soon we can go for a quick dip saer on and then tense up berdale has it all C Pebbles there he is the support team's been to the shop and bought some we've got a little replacement drone this has becoming quite an expensive uh hobby look at that perfect log okay for Copenhagen here he goes for the toss H oh right this is the beach unboxing of the new drone um is definitely a lot smaller not sure how we're going to catch that on the boat but um so the batter is a bit flat on theu look at this no network unable to continue Activation so I have to get it on the Wi-Fi before we can even fly it support team's had a long drive for the Drone shop time to get him in the [Music] sea then he goes oh it's fresh and he [Music] goes a lovely support team how is it very [Music] [Music] nice um that was quite a slamming today wasn't it it's quite choppy way bang yeah this is uh and you Chris has been having quite a full on time yeah 6 hours in the seat 6 hours in the car to in vaness him back but he's bought the Drone so it's been a hard day tomorrow hopefully we should make some good ground oh look at the sun coming through there now berrydale evening swim support team's here we've got a new drone things are looking up tomorrow is hopefully a very calm day getting drone set up Charlie's Got the sausages on nearly bedtime the midet in full swing so you guys are getting to stay in the cages tonight we are you are very lucky and we are very lucky yeah how is it in there cozy absolutely beautiful it's too warm it's a bit too warm actually the heating is all cranked up under FL Heating and it's absolutely roasting I suppose they're not used to it being so warm probably well maybe that's it yeah maybe you were fixing up a rubber dingy in the workshop you said to I don't know which one of you is more mental did you look at the rubber dingy and go yes I'll go yeah Johnny likes crazy Adventures you're from edra okay so not that well we could give you a lift home you could you thought you're quicker than the carard I tell you hope you have a very comfortable stay in the thank you very much enjoy your enjoy your under heating yeah sausages are done night Charlie rain's coming could be a rainy morning morning mate I slept pretty good I mean I was woke up quite a bit yeah I did but um rainning a lot right it's half 5 in the morning we're getting an early start because we need to move the boat while the Tide's not too low Co to crom little tired little it was quite rainy last night wasn't it it was very rainy was your tent dry very dry actually very pleased with it down beside the motor I was thinking [Music] that [Music] [Music] [Music] just having a Belgium waffle for Brey under the Broly it's a good sweet nutritious breakfast there cave there yeah you going in a cake R now it's pretty wet out there right we're just heading down here to chomy so we still got to get around the nose hav we that's the next big Headland eat a head Fraser BG well the rain should stop in a minute it looks brighter over there the new Broly is really working wonders it's certainly pretty wet but um judging by the rain last night it's just little showers so soon we should be dry again and we can press on compared to yesterday the sea is much flatter so we should be a to make good [Music] progress it goes on and on forever God really deep in this cave we got the uh transom lights on oh yeah big one just yeah I don't think we can go much further back for coming out this cave is very deep we're just shouting from the rain and this cave goes right [Music] in right we're cutting the corner here going a bit more out to sea just doing uh 30 m across to the peninsula so we're going across to tarbat Nest leaving C Nest behind and heading down towards cromy T's popping out um it's not the flattest sea but it's pretty good 161 7 Coast Guard go ahead what have you got in your bag Harry right in the snack compartment we have madin for you Charlie thanks man I love them M Chocolate madelin for Brey they little like little boots into the cave see the chalky inside so we're heading that way out to sea everything's running very nice still got off end the tire taking long for the ride nor Head Lighthouse and heading down finally into the engine stats all looking good not far now Charli look got that's where we're going down in [Music] there ah that was quite a um an ordeal on the back we're away by qu 6 and it's now 10 to9 pretty right we've made it to Chom there's lots of oil rigs right and we go right well we're in the safety now of the uh bay and chrom basically a big Inlet with a load of oil rigs [Music] going to go for a spot of late breakfast B of brunch with the support [Music] team he's that on that wall support team's here how's it going I was pacing you good drive very good drive so you's got the ferry over well the SAT have said to go this week yeah but I didn't realize it was a ferry which could take just one car chomy [Music] good let's grab [Music] it [Music] yeah so we made it a chromy what a pilgrimage made famous by uh the shipping forecast probably one of the most perfect natural harbors and it's full of oil rigs because they come in here to shelter uh when they're not needed out to seee get it Charlie char excellent look at this yeah it's working excellent very good excellent excellent It's good coffee really nice do you want the brown sauce Harry no you have the brown sauce supportting so so you on the rib tour company yeah we work for Eco Ventures okay you see goodwi out there yeah no it's way smaller in real life I know it's pretty tiny isn't it look out for sharks as well really had a lot of basking sharks especially over if you go across towards n yeah um yesterday there was about 10 Baskin sharks shark confed water careful the common dolphins are not common right okay uh so they're smaller much smaller much a more agile much quicker um probably the most I've ever seen actually in 30 years the last two days but 100 100 common dolphin so yeah keep your eyes peel yeah we will brilliant well I guess we'll might see you out there yes yeah definitely where's your next Des yeah I mean anywhere along there keep an eye out for Bottle Nose particularly along that stretch and the Basking shks along the South Side beautiful good luck guys thank you very much yeah take care bye it's a lovely spot the just we're out running the weather at the [Music] moment tuck shops open what's on the menu pickled shots so it's like a pickled onion but a bit smaller and more expensive possibly more Gourmet yeah thank you very much hits the spot we came out of cromy F and we've been heading across towards fine horn and we're heading towards abine I think we could go in and look at those sandy beaches over there with the sun on yeah it's good and if I'm charging up this drone we could launch it and just send it out for a minute I'll s this is the cin Sands it's a lovely Long Beach it would be a good camping spot but um we've got to get some miles on maybe time to test out the new drone Charles [Music] yeah [Music] [Music] this is the little fishing Village of doy um looks very nice we're going to try and stop in one of them and um get some fuel and see if we can find the memory cards that seem to have gone missing for the camera memory's Gone Missing 1.1 M there not as space than this is it too shallow I'm trying to do catch it on the screen one of those strongman competitions W right we've realized we've lost a wallet with all the memory cards in so we're just looking through trying to find I mean maybe they are in the boat we're in Cullen Harbor we're going through all the kit we've misplaced all of the camera cards from the last few days we've been through everything and as far as we can see it's not here it's very depressing I feel like crying so we've lost the Drone we got the footage of crashing the Drone and now we've lost that it's definitely nowhere in the boat we've been through everything it might still be in there but we can't find it are you sure that that pimp and first memory card is in that case or it's not in the other case we've decided instead tomorrow we're going to go back retrace our steps and see if we can find the memory card is that a fun idea yeah it's kind of like a famous five episode isn't it yeah but it's like a treasure hunt isn't it which one are you I want to be George I'm going to be um well Chris you can be uncle Quenton or I could be Timmy the dog oh yeah you lashings of ir bre so let me show you what we're looking for here one of these it's got a lot of these cards in it's got loads in have you seen it you say you do you remember seeing it I don't remember seeing it how's your memory is this your elaborate joke Chris where were you on the on the um nothing to do with me go where were you memory we're looking on the bright side I mean think of all the things we we can pretend we did I mean they were like what 30ft waves coming around that um we got a full tank of fuel we're going to do a evening run and then we're going to take the boat out and then the treasure hunt starts Chris we'll see you shortly sh trip we're off out from Cullen we're heading east for the last run before we take the boat out and go find the cars [Music] bye rainbow it's a sign Charlie It's a Sign maybe the camera cards at the end of the rainbow yeah and it did have a golden band didn't it did well yellow oh I hope we find it so we we're heading to McD off I [Music] think we've made it to McDuff it's going to be our um final resting stage on this leg of the journey I think maybe that is the slip to use over there YouTube in is it it's a YouTube one yeah could have been steering if you been just been camping yeah you what an adventure it is fun yeah although we crashed a drone into um a kind of Cliff well now we've lost all the camera cards all the memory cards Jesus see you next time we're back right like some of that stuff in on YouTube like it's it's real yeah you watch stuff this is not real this is real isn't it yeah so over to B right the fisherman said we got to go to bamp which is on the other side so saying goodbye to McDuff and hello to B slipway looks a bit Sandy which might not be good from the Renault what happens to the Land Rover like everything on this [Music] mission we broke this we broke me we've lost the memory cards what a great trip thanks Charlie can't wait for the next one let's go see if we can find the memory cards and all the footage from this trip but it's not really good packing look at that how we going to get it all [Music] in what why we got why hav we got one of those that looks really but much better plan the support team needs one of those yeah right we're off we've got a plan about where it might be it may be on a beach because we've looked at the footage we've got and it all points to berydale Beach and that fateful night where someone who shall remain nameless the support team may have neglected to pick up something that I left [Music] behind there a tiny slim chance that the the memory cards were left on Ian's desk in the wick Harbor office when we were looking at the weather hello hi it's Harry sorry I'm I'm dipping in out on the road here you got them oh my God you lucky well thank you so much so we're we're heading up now so we'll probably be there in an hour or so so they hadn't noticed him on the desk he said we just looked down we like oh no oh what's this we got him we got him guys [Music] so what's this one so this is our 12-year-old single M wh Cheers Cheers that's lovely it's been around from 1826 yes might try a little bit of smoke previously this is 46 oh that's very smoky Chris is going to start drinking again 1826 when it was established on S 1826 we got some the here we got does smell good what goes on in that bit up there this is the the hopper it's just a storage area for the the maltt all right okay so they fill that up with malt up there and then it pours down into distillation and then it goes into barrels right a lot of barrels so they here for 12 years so some of some of these have been here 2001 so that one's 20 years to this thank you very much very welcome all right I he you found something on the desk yes we did yeah oh my God so you're you're the life booat coxing yeah yeah it can be a nasty bit of water but it can be nasty anywhere you know so it's it's well suited to what we've got here to be honest just grab your car yeah let's have a look where are they oh yeah don't forget take in the there they are yeah I can't even remember what's in there let's look at this that's the footage well thank you so much thank you no problem at all come on look here we go from the local one you're probably like oh more of this it's horrible stuff not so now we've come all the way back up to Wick it would seem a shame not to have dropped back in with the Drone and got a bit more history about these Giants whg go steps wh go we met the guy who fixed all this up to learn a bit more about why the steps are here yeah sorry so you've been looking after the steps for 40 years yeah what are they called the steps quigo or Whig go actually Wheels got washed up dead on the shores so wh go is in little whs in 1823 there was nearly a th000 barels of hering exported out of there that's a lot of fish now it was the women who had to carry the fish up the steps on baskets on their back and they had to walk to w 8 Miles 8 Miles with carrying the fish fish on the back to sell in those days the woman had beards right down to their knees we spent 30 years putting the steps back together did you wow so you remember boats sort of Anor out like was the last boot will Sinkler his boat was pulled out the water in 1970 that was the final fishing boat that ever fished [Music] it the incredible journey continues it's been a long lot of road miles 1,278 we'll be back soon for more but for now I'm off to download these cards very quickly before we lose them again hopefully the clutch on the Rena will last all the way back home and back up again
