you'd be surprised how much sun your monstera can handle hey leigh here helping you become a better plant parent it's important to think about sunlight as being the most important factor for the growth of your plant the less light that your plant gets the fewer opportunities it has to become the giant plant that you want it to become let me take you through four signs that your monstera deliciosa needs more sun and then i'll show you how to safely increase that sunlight without burning your leaves the first sign that your monstera might need more sun is if you're seeing slow growth in the spring and summer months especially if you have a younger unfenestrated monstera you should be seeing growth from almost every vine monsteras slow their growth in the colder months with lower temperatures and fewer hours of sunlight once the temperature increases and the number of hours of sunlight starts to get longer in the early spring your monstera should be going into overdrive and producing a lot of new growth if you're not seeing this then light is usually the main issue for larger monsters you do need to be a little bit more patient to use mine as an example it put out a new leaf in late winter and while i have been watching the stem of the plant get thicker because it's been ready to produce new leaf it hadn't actually produced any new growth until the middle of the summer your plant needs to build energy by absorbing sunlight this spring and summer are crucial to your plants development so make sure you're using this time for your plant to build as much energy and get as much sunlight as possible on occasion you might notice something like this you are so excited for your monstera putting out new growth and then nothing the plant just stops pushing out new growth almost as if your plant just gave up or ran out of energy while this is often related to some kind of shock to the plant for example if you just took it home from the nursery or you repotted it into a different medium lighting can still be a factor in this while i do notice this more frequently with the monstera adensoni monsteras not only need lots of light but they also need consistent lighting as well any long-term changes to the amount of sunlight that they're getting per day can cause these kinds of damages to your plant this is why consistency and incremental changes towards better plant care are always going to be the most important things for the health of your plant if your monstera is producing smaller leaves than the last one it could be a sign that your monstera isn't getting enough light let's look at mine as an example this leaf came out during the winter time it is a beautiful leaf but it is a lot smaller than the previous leaf [Music] less light will generally mean smaller leaves there is an exception if you're not using a moss pole or a stake for your plant to climb we can't forget that the monstera deliciosa is still a vining plant and it does need something to climb when your plant runs out of space for it to climb up something sturdy it will eventually start producing smaller leaves if your monstera has fewer fenestrations than the previous leaf this is usually a sign that your monstera needs more light as soon as your plant moves out of the juvenile stage with leaves like this and it starts producing holes that is a sign that you're giving your monstera really good care and really great lighting as monsters grow even larger they'll start to produce inner fenestrations like this this is all depending on good care and good light exposure when you start to see your plant go in the opposite direction this is usually your plant telling you that it needs more light this is not an open invitation to blast your monstera with as much sun as you possibly can this will give your plant sunburn and then your leaves will start to look like this you need to find a way to slowly give your plant more light exposure i recommend moving your plant a little bit closer to a window a few inches every few weeks and then monitor to see how your plant does if your plant does well you can continue moving it closer until you find the best spot for your plant alternatively you can find a window that gives you more intense light some windows may have sunlight for longer hours and some windows may have sun that gives more intense light it's your job to find what works best for your plant if you can't get enough light in your home but you still want to grow a gigantic plant you may want to consider getting a grow light for your monstera because monsters are such large growers you may want to consider getting an adjustable led light that you could place along the side of your monstera to angle it towards your leaves so that it gets more light many of the higher quality grow lights hang from the ceiling so this might not be a very good option for this plant in particular i'll put a few links in the description for some products that i might recommend moving your plant outside could be an option but i really really do recommend that before you do that you get something like a light meter so that you can know exactly the intensity of light that your plant will be getting moving a plant from indoors in a low light area to outdoors even in the shade if that's three times the amount of sun intensity you could still get sunburn on your plant even if it's not getting direct sunlight if you move it outside still making incremental changes is the most important thing even if you do want to move your plant outside so this might look like moving your plant outside for a little bit of time each day so that eventually your plant builds up the tolerance to even being in full sun outdoors if you'd like to learn more
