4 GREAT Baseball Throwing Velocity Drills To Throw Harder!

hey guys what's going on coach Justin here from ultimate baseball training and in today's video I wanted to show you four great throwing velocity drills that are really going to help you boost your throwing velocity okay before we get into the video I actually created a full free throwing workout all you have to do grab that is click on the very first link in the description below this video email address and I'll send you that throwing workout and without further ado let's get into this video all right so most of these throwing drills that I'm going to share with you today we're working on hip to shoulder separation and what I mean by that this is something there's been several studies that show and it makes sense if you think about it the more hip to shoulder separation that your body has the harder that you throw guys like a roll this chapman the hardest throwers in the game they all have incredible hip to shoulder separation so if we can improve that then obviously that's going to be a major you know a major sign to help us throw harder ok so what do I mean by hip to shoulder separation well if you turn your hips like this towards your target and then turn your shoulders this way that is essentially what I mean the more separation you can get between your hips moving forward and your shoulders still back like this the more separation you can get the harder that you're going to be able to throw so this whole hip to shoulder separation deal it's a weird concept I think for younger kids that haven't had any coaches really screw them up you know for younger kids it comes a little bit more naturally but I think you know as you get a little bit older and if you're not throwing in this particular manner then it's a little bit more difficult to grasp grasp so I have a few different drills today that I'm going to share with you let's get into the very first one all right the first drill is the line hit the shoulder separation drill what I'm going to do is I'm going to get down like this I'm actually going to lay on my left side alright I'm going to have something that I can prop my right knee up on so I have my glove okay we're not actually using a ball to throw so I'm going to throw my right leg over like this this simulates my hips going towards my target so I'm leaning down like this and all I'm going to do is work on going forward and stretching back like this so just back and forth this is a great stretch that you can do at home but it's going to get you know you used to that hip to shoulder separation this is a great warm-up drill again just your right knee propped up on something and get that feeling for hip to shoulder separation ok the next way that we're going to learn this concept of hip to shoulder separation we're going to do the same thing or something similar get down on both knees you've probably done a throwing progression where you're down on both knees like this and thrown to your partner but instead of just having both of our needs square off we're actually going to have our throwing side so on the right hand and thrower my right knee it's going to be a few inches in front of my left knee okay a few inches in front of my left knee again that simulates that my hips are kind of you know already facing my target and then all you're going to do is turn this way so that separates you know the hip to shoulder separation my hips are facing one way my shoulders are still cocked back like this so I'm getting that stretch getting that feeling so I'm going to go back like this and then just obviously throw to my partner but this is another great way a great progression where you can learn just what it feels like you get that stretch because it's different if you haven't thrown like this before if you haven't done proper mechanics before it's going to feel a little bit strange but again you're throwing side slightly in front of your non throwing slide then from there then we're actually going to stand up and do the same thing although now we're going to be standing so my right leg is going to be pretty much healed the toe my right heel is going to be on my left toe essentially alright we're going to do the same thing so start with your hands directly in front of your body like this alright and I'm going to turn turn like this all in one motion and then throw and make sure I follow my throat alright just like this right foot slightly in front of left turn row and you can do this at a variety of different distances you can do it you know ten feet away you can do it 100 feet away whatever but again right leg in front of left turn rocket fire throw so we got the hip to shoulder separation down I'd recommend doing the the lying hip to shoulder separation for about I would say 15 to 20 reps then we're going to do the one knee in front of the other for about 15 to 20 throws and we're going to stand up and do the standing one for 15 to 20 throws you know gradually getting a little bit further and further apart and in the very last drill that's really going to help you with your throwing velocity is medicine ball throws so we turn like this and we throw the medicine ball and then slams we bring it above our head and use our core and our legs and slam that thing into the ground really you know hitting and pitching and throwing everything that we do in baseball is really a rotational movement at some point you know we throw we have to violently rotate our hips and you know in order to do that we have to have a strong core strong obliques and the medicine ball
