hi there i'm jeremy and welcome to this video in which i'll show you four ways how you can import openstreetmap data directly into your sketchup model so you can add some context to the sites that you are developing so the four ways of doing it are using the sketchup to open street map plugin which is quite an old plugin that is free of charge and gets your openstreetmap data into sketchup then we'll take a look at cadmapper which is a great service to create different kinds of 3d models that you can import directly into either sketchup autocad or rhino then we'll take a look at the placemaker which is a premium plugin for importing or or generating the 3d context of the cities and the last one that we'll uh look at is uh modeler which is basically an urban design tool that also adds the functionality of openstreetmap buildings import but basically it is a it is a tool for urban design where you can quickly uh create messing and get the data about it so let's get started with sketchup to openstreetmap plugin which you can find on openstreetmap.org website in here i'll just go to installation click on the download plugin here it will open the windows explorer i will save the file and what i'll do next is i will rename it to rbz so that i can install it directly inside sketchup so i'll just go here to window extension manager and install extension now i can go to downloads open openstreetmap import sketchup to openstreetmap and now you can see that the plugin has been loaded once it's loaded i can go to file and import the data now i have the openstreetmap importer in here but right now i don't have the data yet so i also need to go to the openstreetmap itself so to the to the website um select my area in question in this case i have chosen uh istanbul as an as a as an example file because uh it contains some hills so that you can see how it works how different options work also in terms of the theory so once i'm satisfied with my view i'll just click on export and it will generate me the openstreetmap file i'll click save to osm import save and then what i need to do is i just need to load this file into sketchup or maybe before i do that let me go here to at the location and i'll actually go yeah looks right so i'll just go to select region select provider digital globe and import so that my model is now also georeferenced next i'll go to file import map openstreetmap now this will take a while to load a few minutes and it will basically create me a 2d file basically it will be just a collection of faces meaning that i will still need to add the heights to the buildings manually i could do that by either knowing the context the the city and at the heights or maybe viewing it using the google maps or some similar service where i can estimate the heights of the buildings there is some manual work involved with this but it is a completely free solution anyone can use free of charge okay so our model has now loaded okay it is for some reason it's quite away from the location so we would need to move it uh but just to quickly check it is now a flat uh surfaces only so what we need to do is enter it by double clicking it and then we can use the push pull to extrude the building heights obviously we know we need to know what the heights are and then we can we can do it manually so while this this still requires quite some work to add the heights to the buildings we have some basis to work upon and the solution is completely free of charge so in this respect it's it could be useful for some cases now moving on to the next solution i will just go to actually i will leave it here what i'll do is i'll switch over to the cad mapper which is a commercial solution but it also offers uh three files for areas up to one square kilometer of size or in different formats so obviously you need to sign in or sign up first and once you are logged in you can select your area in question and as you can see if i scroll out of it my area becomes larger and i would need to purchase it so in this case what i'll do is i will just zoom in so that my area is smaller than one square kilometer okay something like that i have a few options of how i want to import the data in this case i'm importing the 3d buildings and also if the heights are not available the building should have some default height in this case i have set it to 13 meters and then i have the option to either import the file that has the topography so the terrain and the buildings are on the terrain or i can go with the flat one in this case i'll go with topography and just click on the create file it will take less than a minute to generate the file i will also see the preview of what has been generated and once cad mapper does its job i have the download button here and i can just click close and i will save the file here to the same location it will be zip file meaning that i need to extract it so i'll go to extract here and in here we have a sketchup file and the license so let's go back to sketchup open the file and in here i'll go to downloads istanbul and let me open the file and this is what we have so it's roughly one square kilometer of size so if needed i could add some more or uh if i want to work with the larger areas maybe you should also consider just purchasing it to support the the future developer development of cad mapper and the service itself but still we have the the buildings here and they are on the terrain that is already produced by cad mapper and one nice thing here is that this model is also geolocated so i can go to geolocation add more imagery and you will see that it's already located so in this case i will just go with zoom level to zoom in to the location and then i will add some more uh terrain using the sketchup's built-in functionality so let's go here to select region select provider digital globe import because this now will add me both the flat surface and the and the tearing so uh depending on my needs i can use whichever i want now moving to the third and fourth option let's first check the how the placemaker works so let me go to default tray show tray and i will actually go and hide the cadmapper line and buildings so i have a again model 3 of geometry i will now turn on the placemaker dialog which will bring me the user interface of placemaker as you can see there are quite a few options what you can import using placemaker and if you really want the to get the most accurate and the best models the placemaker is the solution you're searching for but for this case i will just import the 3d buildings from openstreetmap so for this reason i will select the the terrain and just click on the import buildings again this will take a while to load but once it's loaded you will see the buildings are already placed nicely onto the terrain okay now my import is done but as you can see i'm now in the preview mode meaning that if i use any other tool uh these buildings here will be lost because they are not generated as a as a geometry right now they are just a preview uh so i would need to actually purchase the credits or the the subscription for annual license of placemaker which you can see here there are two options play as you go credit system or you can you can purchase it as an annual subscription license which would give you the option to actually bake this geometry and have the buildings in your sketchup model so uh right now i'll just go with cancer my the these buildings will now disappear and now i'll show you the fourth option which is using modeler which as i said it's basically a design tool to help you work on urban design projects with messing and calculating the floor areas required parking spaces and so on but since this work sometimes involves also adding the context to your site we have added a simple importer from for openstreetmap 3d buildings or urban morphology and right now we have also decided to release it just as a small separate plugin which can be uh accessed through extension extensions import openstreetmap buildings or morphology now in case i select my 3d model and click on the extensions modeler import openstreetmap buildings uh modeler will automatically create the buildings from openstreetmap data and also place them onto the terrain if my terrain was flat the buildings would be put on the on the flat surface at zero or wherever the surface lies again this one will also take a while to load because there are quite a few buildings and they need to be placed each one needs to be placed to the terrain but once it's done you actually have a proper sketchup geometry which provides you some context to your site in question okay the import is now done and as you can see these are actually separate buildings that you can modify if needed or assign colors and and elaborate more if needed but here they are all placed onto the terrain now let me close the user interface of modeler and bring up the default tray so that we can see this is a layer where the buildings are imported and if i save the file now i would have all these building buildings inside it then on top of that what we have also added is also the ability to import buildings just as a morphology so that you can perform some some kind of analysis of the tissue of urban tissue if this is something you you need so this is also a quick way of generating it so that you get some better insight of the city that you're looking at so as you can see now the buildings have been imported just as a flat surfaces let me just hide the snapshot so these are now 2d surfaces which you could use the push-pull but they are more intended for the analysis part of urban tissue when working with inside cities to determine the geometry of the city so these are the two functionalities that are offered by this openstreetmap imported by importer by modeler and i invite you to take advantage of the offer that you can see below this video and start using the modular openstreetmap importer thank you
