3D Visualization of a DEM in ArcGIS Pro

in this video i'm going to give you a brief tutorial on how to download some digital elevation model data from the 3d ep lidar explorer and bring that into arcgis pro then create a local scene which allows you to visualize 3d data and play around with it a little bit just so you can get an idea of how working with digital 3d looks like so right now i'm on the 3d ep lidar explorer i'm not going to download lidar today because lidar data is very large as far as storage goes and it's a little clunky to work with so i'm just going to download a dem but now you know where to go if you are looking for lidar data so i'm going to click show where dems exist and i'm going to define an area of interest and specifically i'm looking around the town of rio dell in humboldt county so as you can see you hit control hold that down draw a square of your area of interest and then you can select either dems or lidar from the downloadable products i'm going to look for 1 meter lidar and i'm going to select this first download option once you've downloaded the one meter dem from the 3d ep lidar explorer you navigate to that folder in your catalog and go ahead and drag and drop it into your map frame when the data is loaded it will automatically zoom to that area and the next step is going to be turning this into a hill shade and then creating a local scene so we can visualize it three-dimensionally to do that you would go to analysis under analysis you can select raster functions raster functions gives you a bunch of different processing and analysis tools that you can do with rasters today we're going to create a multi-directional hill shade so type in hill shade it'll appear under surface and open that up we're going to select the raster that we've brought in we're going to change it to a multi-directional hill shade type and give it a z factor of 2 to make it a little bit more dramatic and then you hit create new layer and you're going to get this really neat really high definition looking hill shape now before we make it 3d we're going to put the dem back on top of the hill shade and we're actually going to right click on that in the table of contents and go to symbology we can change this color scheme to something a little more colorful like green to red and then we're going to select it in the table of contents go to appearance and give it something like a 50 percent transparency that way you can see the hill shade underneath of it and now we can convert this into a three-dimensional map so if you go to the map tab i'm sorry the view tab and then you can select convert to local scene this is what allows you to take a two-dimensional map in arcgis pro and make it three-dimensional once the conversion is done now you can have some fun so i'm going to minimize the symbology window on the side and then i'm going to make this full control and now that i have full control i can zoom in and i can take this inner ring and i can start to adjust the view angle so that i can look at the landscape three dimensionally you got to give it some time to load and once it does you can start to interact with this three-dimensional dem laid over top of the hill shade and as you can see if you zoom in and change your view angle you can actually get a really good feel for the landscape and you can actually see where the highway is the 101 running through rio del here and you can see the detail of the terrain you can see roads on the hillsides it's really really awesome being able to visualize the landscape three-dimensionally using just a few simple tricks in arcgis pro all right well i hope that was pretty interesting and fun it's definitely something you can replicate on your own and thanks so much for watching
