guy's lucky enough to go on ahead and take one out of the old bucket and just cross her off today we're going to fire up this 3 000 horsepower 400 000 pound locomotive and i'm bringing you along i'm derek welcome to vice grip garage [Music] [Applause] [Music] so before we get over to that locomotive we're going to fire up these old trackmobiles that other engines actually in use so we got to just sneak in there really quick this one's a hercules you could tell because of the way that it is and then this one's a titan i'm told she's just she's got more hp's in her and it's a little bit bigger and uh that's also how you can tell is that right there these are six seven cummins in these so let's start with the hercules little guy then we'll work our way up to the big one over here and then there's a really old one way on the other side of the yard we'll go fire up that's got a 5 9 in it so these are kind of how these work from what i gather and was told is the road wheels there's a lever in there you drive them down makes contact with the old s-curve drum later here and then that spins the actual train wheel thing i don't know it's the it turns on the track and that's on the back side oh we got a guy down hey you up are you down i think he's down go no he's still down and so the back ones drive on these here and i think that's how they all work so we'll climb up in this thing and see if she fires off so this is the operator tower thing we're gonna fire this one up that's the extent to my duty oh yeah she purrs this must be a low hour unit i don't think there's an hour meter on it it's wrong yeah you just whatever it is just throw six thousand more on her but she's got digital cameras on her and all sorts of stuff so guy knows because we're sitting in here actually sideways which is a little different i guess but it makes sense because the old neck just whatever way you're gonna go and then it's all joystick looks like throttle later full send reduce the send and then looks like uh lawnmower controls throttle it up awesome is the other one pretty similar yeah he's saying it is but we'll fire it up anyway trackmobile out of georgia we're actually gonna take her for a little test run the track's clear there's no personnel out here the ground's clear so we've got approval to run this down the line a little bit it's actually a lot smoother than i thought it would be they scoot around pretty good they must go four five miles an hour or something like that that's enough to move stuff around anyway he's gonna show us quick how these buckle together i guess this moves around so when you're up in the cab you can actually just line these up he's going to fire it up and run us through it i got to stand to the side oh yeah that makes it real simple [Music] he's going to check quick but this one the engine's got like 22 000 hours or somewhere around there and it's only had an alternator and a turbo and just basic stuff like that on it so coming on 24 000 pretty soon that's really impressive actually you think about most tractors have fifteen hundred two thousand hours on them before they go to auction and fired right up wow this one's really similar we're just coming in a different door but pretty much the same setup as the other one just slightly more used up neat machines there it is it's not even covered in oil or anything but what's the model i can't read nothing but that's really impressive just shows you what maintenance does on these keep up with it run forever we're gonna go find a trackmobile around here see if we can get it fired up i've been told she's got a five nine cummins in her so we're gonna see how that runs we're gonna jump in this thing and you know just go test on it a little bit it's a trackmobile 4750 it's got a five nine cummins in it and basically they can shoot in and grab their cars with this empty or loaded yeah maneuver them around a little bit it's actually it's almost wider than it is tall it's a pretty big unit actually it's got some grip laiders on it pretty nice looking rig it's got disc brakes there's that cummins down there he's gonna fire her up real quick [Music] there's way more levers than anticipated uh missile launch guidance control some sort of gps system you gotta like that right away in the morning question is though does this fan work oh yeah right in the teeth whoa we have multiple speeds on it so this is a remote for this actual trackmobile guy can just strap late this on and you just run that it's pretty neat kind of upset i don't got a wheel over here though but that's all right i assume we're building air right now once that gets up we'll be ready to rock [Music] oh she's a torky unit oh blew the door open even [Music] i gotta say that ride quality is outstanding [Music] i wonder if you could oh you can't even see the train wheel things oh we're running uh eight miles an hour seven i mean she's a ripper horn works [Music] [Music] i'm going to guess that this probably isn't fuel efficient we got a couple more minutes here before we can run down to the rail and jump in the locomotive so we're going to look at these conveyors so these slide under the car here and then this stacks it up dumps it into the truck up there and these have little kubota diesels on them i think we're gonna try to fire one up here actually i hear noises oh yeah fur's like a kitten that's got to be 39 horsepower at least maybe 20 torques looks fairly simple got a little hand crank later on there oh there you go geez that really moves quick actually so we just got the ch on the old radio we got just a few minutes to run down to the rail here and jump in that locomotive so it's time let's rip over there quick and let's fire up this 3 000 horsepower engine so this old girl is a 1973 and it weighs 414 000 pounds well there's the air valve i wanted to show you this fuel tank really quick it holds 3 200 gallons of diesel and right now it's got 1740 gallons in it that's it's quite the fuel bill i mean it's up there i have no idea what any of this other stuff does but it's it's all just it's a lot bigger in person than you could ever imagine on tv or anything like that so between the cars you've got the main digital line and this is basically how they communicate between the different engines and cars and then you've got the main air which is the big one down below and i don't know what any of that stuff does but there's there's extra cords and lines and things like that and then these are the levers here how you just disco your connection down there they only made about 1300 of these sd-40s from 1966 to about 1974. they're 65 feet in length these things are just giant these are all the start controls here i think that's the actual switch and then you've got a manual throttle here and then there's a big electric motor in here that actually turns the engine over basically just like a starter but you can see the length of this v16 is just it's massive they hold about i think it's like 250 gallons of coolant that's that tank there and then the air compressors and everything is back behind that yet so we're actually stepping into the locomotive right now and something i learned today during the safety meeting is this is actually what powers locomotive the diesel engine runs this gigantic generator and then there's motors or drives that actually turn the wheels and i did not know that until today i don't know maybe you fellers knew that but this is the end of the generator piece which is massive it's got to be 10 12 feet long and then these are all the electronic controls that go into the engineer station or i don't know driver compartment place front seat operator stand that's where that goes and you got all these pipes and these are all the digitals and stuff maybe i shouldn't touch things because you know she's the voltage is up there pretty much the whole locomotive is run by air there's air lines around everywhere through this thing so we're up here in the gab of the locomotive and we'll just do a super quick tour here this is actually an operation so i got to be pretty quick but down here is where the restroom used to be but it's bluetooth right now there's no toilet down there and then you got a cold snack holder in here for whatever else back here all the electronics and digitals think can i flip this down again real quick yeah it's just i don't know what any of this does there's colors and numbers and this one looks really dangerous so we'll open this up here again yep no idea just pretend we didn't see that shut it uh conductor sits over here he's just got her back in tupac mode laid all the way back and then this is the engineer seat over here and i got a little quick tour i'm probably gonna mess all this up basically electronic jake break that's your actual throttle there and it goes from idle to eight and i got a saying called straight eight i gathered and i think that's the forward or potentially reverse gear um locomotive break and car break is that right nailed it and i don't know what any of this stuff does he was talking about it but there's needles and important stuff and things like that and but that's it and this one's got she's actually got ac on this unit here and heat up here and all that good stuff so this yellow locomotive is a 1959 and this is 1200 horsepower she's got a cummins and it actually runs a little bit different this one just is pretty much wide open all day runs at 3000 rpm you can see it's somewhat similar but there are differences in the years the controls still have the throttle here car and main brake but little heater down here whereas the other locomotive you've got the ac and the heat you know she's hanging late and off the roof here but yeah she's running she's just got all the onions coming through her right now before we fire up this 3000 horsepower giant you got to check the oil on this and krang showed me where the dipstick is down on this bad boy so i'm going to pull that out and see what we got it's this little tiny stick right here it's definitely like a 20 40 or a 20 50. and he was explaining that an inch is was it 50 gallons 10 gallons so we got to put a little bit we'd probably throw five gallons in here something like that but this engine holds almost 300 gallons of oil at any given time which is absolutely insane we'll open up these valve covers show you guys the valve train in here which is mind bottling and then he's going to show us how to add oil which i'm thinking is just going to be a heave hoe i'm not sure this way is opening the valve cover up oh this isn't these are gigantic so i would assume this is the cam shaft technically isn't it because it's rolling on these that's crazy look how giant those bolts are it's like gotta be three inches something like that all right he's gonna add some oil yeah that'll that'll work that was five gallons just like that you can see how massive this thing is this is just part of it there's a whole other half just like this half 10-4 on lunch copy that so we're going through a startup procedure right now there's like 84 billion breakers that just they got to go all the way up and then there's this giant knife switch no idea what that just did but it sounded cool shut this and then there's more out here i guess all right what have we got going on in here all right i got it yep well we're gonna prime it so you prime it and then crank to start and the throttle so you can hear it priming there we go it's awesome [Music] oh [Music] that's awesome that's 3000 horsepower b16 right there so we're just nudging it ahead here a little bit 45 20 [Applause] right there [Music] [Music] uh can you give us a bump to eight real quick and neutral [Applause] [Music] that is so loud thanks man so this is the conveyor that comes across from the other building where the cars offload that's a lot of sandboxes [Music] so this sand is coming off the rail cars going up a bucket ladder i don't know 50 yards away across a conveyor to another building that we're in and then it comes down in here and is loaded and gets dumped back into here and conveyored up to other silos so that's going to have to do it for today again this is a running operation so we don't want to be too intrusive and i'm at an undisclosed location but i do want to say thank you to those folks that made this possible you guys know who you are thanks for watching hope you guys enjoyed we'll see you next time [Music] you
