so every now and again you get that feeling that mankind is utterly screwed it's just too dumb to survive and at this point you might as well live it up become that evil supervillain on that little stairs our island that you've always wanted you know the one populated by highly experienced super model personal body up so they promised you a solar-powered cell filling water bot here an adventure you know the anxiety that comes with running out of water in the middle of a tour the last thing you want is dehydration on you're miles away from home Francis is a self doing waterfall that allows you to plan your adventures without having to worry about heavy water loads or where to find the next river or the next gas station for me it's like magic because I love the air and Sun we are bringing this bold to fill itself with drinkable work one that one design award from engineering companies like Dyson and our efforts have been rewarded already with several design award it got a third of a million dollars of IndieGoGo there was just one my problem of it that I'd already busted it showing that what was promised was simply not thermodynamically possible the core of it being they take a huge amount of energy to convince water from the air it's basically a dehumidifier and all that they're really going to do is power it with a solar panel and you can trivially calculate that the amount of water you can give Vince with a solar panel this size under optimal conditions perfect conditions is about one liter per week and we know from earlier that our meter squared solar panels generate about 150 watts of power so assuming it's summing this will give them about 15 watts of power 15 jewel and how many tools do we need to get out of this to extract 1 liter of water oh that's with the standalone bottle that had this relatively large solar panel bullet the font astrayed had pathetically small solar panels to the point where if you were lucky it would commence about one liter of water per month you're heading into the Sun or away from it this device will generate no power whatsoever so yeah here's an even better idea let's position the device between our legs so it gives no direct sunlight at all I think that really seems like this a brilliant idea that will get a design award from an engineering firm pub being so damn clever and the whole thing was going to be done using a polti device which Oh quite commonly used in the human device so that's where you typical Peltier device looks like you pass electricity through it once I gets hot once they gets cold and of course you can take that heat way quickly otherwise the whole thing just you know the hot side heats up the cold side and that's it you don't get anything so the way it's typically done is you have a bigger heatsink on the hot side and a little heat sink on the cold side hole here device is of course in the middle of somewhere now if I take a look at this on the infrared camera okay so at the beginning here I've set the temperature range from at 3 degrees to 40 degrees so this temperature range everything looks fairly flat for the heatsink and the background and you'll see why I've chosen that heat range shortly so also you'll see the metal here is very shiny in the infrared you don't get the true temperature of the metal it just looks like a mirror in the infrared so I stuck this piece of tape on the heatsink and that will reflect the true temperature of the heating so as they turn it on instantly you'll see the the tape here starts to heat up 50 the big heat sink starts to heat up and the little heatsink sucked cool down so instantly it comes from our 20 degrees to about ten eight seven and this guy's getting really toasty now he's up a thirty degrees 35/36 so the big eating is really pumping out the heat and the little heat sink is now getting down to almost freezing probe temperatures if you can't get this heat away then you can't actually make this thing any cooler all right so it is really importantly at this big heat sink to actually get rid of all the heat from the Polti advise that is if you can't take that heat away eventually it will just heat up the whole system and you'll get no cooling out of it whatsoever this is all it important for later well before I get on to the part where I lose faith in mankind and say screw it it's supervillain type I'm just going to fill you in on what they've been up to in the intervening year because I'm sure yeah eating to know how well trying to achieve the thermal of them clean possible work out for so 10 months ago and clearly in response my busted video there have been some questions about the core technology of Pontus leading to some misconceptions regarding the intentions of our campaign it is paramount to understand the graphics and video animation soon on our site and video serve merely illustrative purposes the information shown about the core technology fountas uses to extract water from the air is simplified than incomplete due to the fact that it cannot be made public until it's fully developed guys eat a Peltier effect dehumidifier I don't think you're exactly letting me Carol the bag here so nine months ago one month later our campaign has ended very successfully and we are grateful for your huge support thanks to the financial support of the Austrian government funding we have been able to launch a second phase of development prototyping and testing Jesus you have got to be kidding me it got government funding for this oh man that desert island sounding better and better eight months ago D supporters it's being some busy first week going through the final company set up an arrangement while working intensely on the first wave of prototypes just slightly behind schedule we are 60% complete towards creating and building the initial prototype rig which will serve to be the Alpha test unit so they're almost there right seven months ago it's been about a month since our last update since we last spoke and we've been working overtime on fountas can maximize the testing batches unfortunately we're slightly good night Rachel in getting into the testing labs yoyoyo we thank you for your support and patience yep three-man team and they've got nothing and now I may be starting to suspect that weirdo on the internet with he's a particle conservation of energy calculation might have had a point six months ago good news these supporters thank you for your patience in waiting for this update we've been waiting several weeks with different supplies in order to assemble a new wave of prototypes apparently the summer here in California you've taken more seriously than we thought I am in Los Angeles overseeing the technical development and supporting the team that has been tirelessly working on the heart technology of fundus we have been able to integrate a new type of material composite that has a cooler conductive Nisour than 30 times copper copper being one of the highest conducting materials used in the industry yeah they're talking about graphene here graphing is got a great thermal conductivity there is one slight problem with it it's twice as expensive as gold it's about 100 dollars per gram and even if it has infinite conductive nurse it doesn't help you at all because all that will help you to do is get closer to the thermodynamic limit and I've already shown the operating app system of of a mac limit you would only get about one liter of water per week out of advise lighten this this combined we are new design for the condenser of the bottle will create condensation substantially better than most of the dehumidifies we have been deconstructing and analyzing in the last month so we're about six months in and what getting some interesting admissions out of them first of all we've just been taking apart dehumidifiers and analyzing them you think that might be intellectual property theft but that's what they say better than most of the dehumidifiers we have been deconstructing and analyzing in the last months and secondly their family kind of come to terms that all they're really doing is putting a solar pad dehumidifier on top of a bottle and even better they have this noticeable picture at the bottom which oddly doesn't include any pictures of graphene I'll tell you what it does contain lots of pictures of is copper heat things because that's what everyone wants on their soulfully water bottle is a big heavy metal heatsink so four months ago another two months have passed and we are still struggling with some suppliers and the company in charge approached web development consequently I've decided to relocate the main activities of the development process to Vienna where we hope to achieve faster results in higher quality the role of prototypes developed in the US did not meet our performance expectations and processes were overall extremely slow now it's not quite clear whether he's talking about processes is in making the prototype with very slow or the condensation of water was Rea slow but I can tell you that yes the condensation would be very slow in that I actually just bought just for this video a dehumidifier and decided to see how much water a commercial multi-effect dehumidifier running on about 80 watts would condense out of an atmosphere with 30 percent humidity okay so there I have one dehumidifier commercial I have something that's telling me the humidity at 21 degrees is 30 percent I have a time-lapse camera here I'm going to get going and how do you know that the dehumidifiers working well I put on bottle missile joining the SEC when the beach humidifiers action can blend hair out so let's see how much water black ninja this commercial dehumidifier bear in mind 32 degrees so there are 24 tears that don't teach them relative humidity [Music] [Applause] okay lastly when I hold a long it's now set your clock that's 6,000 humidity is basically the same set of a wall and let's see how much water has been condensed and my guess would be not a single drop of water the amount of as one or two drops in there earlier and now that's from running a dehumidifier for hours why should L feel the cold flight and there the car plates and doing mushrooms nut bonjour I don't know hanging out there in the water that is a it is a very very fun yeah now there is there's actually when you will see that wincing yeah now that is a drop of water just there yeah just there yeah I got a single drop of water to here is mark to the heat in the bathroom yeah so I've just run a shower for a bit get a humidity up so that our physics and humidity and friends go in and so let's see how that does will you ever leave my hair the next day so we actually can in some water you actually can enjoy water below yeah you have to a increased test where any litter a little that and this dehumidifier runs on about 80 watts that means you would need about half a square meter a solar panel just to run this and that would need full bright sunlight to do it approaching the end of October we are unfortunately out of shuttle since the final prototype in place hasn't yet been completed our aim is to finalize this phase by the end of the year we thank you for your patience two months ago dear supporters the end of this controversial year is approaching and looking back we realized how much has changed in such a short time yeah like you're finally starting to realize yet cannot beat the laws of thermodynamics we went from a beautiful vision yes a beautiful season by an art student we've been working on fountas for a couple of years now a year I mean Applied Arts in Vienna and a innovative product concept to explore the technical depth of what it means to extract water from the air something you can't really do with a few back-of-the-envelope calculations and knowledge from Wikipedia our first approaches taught us that our expectations and design goals were definitely too high nevertheless our high expectations drove us to challenge the seemingly impossible and reach areas never explored before things to this fact and your support we are now investing in their research and development of technologies that may someday also help millions of people around the world suffering from ground water scarcity yeah I'm not killing you this is actually their update this isn't a water saving these is the self filling water bottle even though we will not reach certain design goals of our project we are developing highly efficient systems that will bring us one step nearer to creating the first cell filling water bottle in history dude I got a commercial dehumidifier and run it overnight at 30 percent humidity at 80 watt and didn't get a single drop of water the only way you might do this is if you're in a place with high humidity any problem is places with high humidity also tend to have a lot of water and we put together a short Christmas plate for you about our work these first two months in our new home in Vienna there's so they started off with this sleek little dehumidifier on top of the bottle bunters is a self cleaning water roll that allows you to plan your adventures without having to worry about heavy water load [Music] and now they have what is essentially a giant computer fan heatsink on top of a jug so if you're one of the 222 people who paid 250 dollars for the perk of a fountas arrow so you could be part of history by owning the world first soulfully water bottle this is what you might expect to get this time next month as this video is made March 2017 estimated delivery April 2070 and I would really hate to see what the bicycle mounted version of this is now they look like seriously just look at this the air comes in there it blows out the side there which means a tiny little bit of the bottom there is where the water collects yeah their design starting to look more and more like a commercial dehumidifier and in almost every way so I'm gonna take my dehumidifier sorry my cell filling water bottle and let's just just compare it so the air comes in at the top it comes out at the side there is a funnel and the water reservoir at the bottom the one on the left with the product of $300,000 of them research the one on the right you can buy now for about 50 bucks Pontus is a self clean water bowl for me it's like magic because I don't speak air and Sun we are bringing this falls to fill itself with drinkable water and this is the point where you just lose faith in mankind after all that they had funding from the Austrian government they got design awards from engineering companies there had a third of a million dollars and a year to try and achieve what can't really be shown to be semi dynamically impossible and after all that essentially end up reinventing the Peltier effect dehumidifier and now two months ago we are proud to being chosen top Austrian startup 2016 Austrians national channel ORF to announce that the Austrian government will spend 185 million euros on the support of 1000 startups they presented the top four of this past year 2016 we are happy and proud to be amongst them we thank all of our contributors for your continuous support it would have been impossible without you we wish you a powerful 2017 yeah you're beginning to see my point about being too dumb to survive so yeah at this point I feel a little frustration in the eye busty things again and again and they still end up getting millions of dollars of funding in some cases from government institutions and such like and part of me is just like I got to reach a wider audience I've got to be more of an intentional because this simple reality is if folks don't see videos like this then they're going to keep falling for it when the shine stuff is great but you know what it lacks an element of virality I need a mean something utterly oilers and ridiculously expensive that can become a metaphor for this sort of crap my reckoning is a solid gold hammer bought and made out of sheer contempt for this of a crap a pointless and ludicrously expensive tool as an icon because when you look at the numbers two million dollars for solar roadways 300,000 for fountas similar again for water fear the hoverboard half a million dollars hell even Anita's ordinary women pull in $200,000 and on any of these numbers a solid gold hammer would barely scratch the service I would honestly be a far far far betting of the money the sad thing is that now having seen so many of these that I can actually probably do these bogus Kickstarter's quite well myself part of me is tempted just to become how should we say pure evil become the evil supervillain give up desert island or underwater bait funded entirely by bogus Kickstarter's and IndieGoGo campaign is drop-dead gorgeous bodyguards ain't cheap [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] you [Music]

Water? Like out the toilet?!

Great channel.

This is not the first time the "water from the air" scam has been debunked. See also the Water Seer.

It's criminal fraud.

ama request, people who back stuff like this

I got a peltier effect dehumidifier in my bathroom.

Even if I take a hot steamy shower it only collects a few milliliters over hours. And it sucks a lot of power.

It works! Just not very quickly.

I also wouldn't want to drink the water that it puts out. Maybe the first few times. But it needs to be regularly cleaned with bleach.

I like how the infographic on their indiegogo site put the relative humidity and temperature on the same axis. I think those pairs of temperature/RH are pretty impractical. When was the last time you saw a RH of 90% and temperature of 105 F? Well you need that combination to get 1L of water in 2.5 hours. All that I'm assuming you need 100% sun exposure.

How much water can I get in 105 F temperature with 5% RH while having the device on a bike between my legs? The chart doesn't say because it'll probably produce close to nothing. In other words, it's a scam.

Think about it. If this was possible the us military would have already made it. All these commercials that promise revolutionary devices are made by art students with no engineering experience. Remember that human gill kickstarter? If that was possible navy seals would be using it. If all our defense spending can't make it some art student can't either.

If you're dumb enough to spend $250 on a product before it's even been developed you deserve to get fucked over

They just want to stop government subsidies to honest, hard working moisture farmers.
