[Music] released on December 17th 1993 Mega Man X was the Blue Bombers debut on the SNES jump starting Mega Man's first sub series the game just turned 30 years old this year and to celebrate I wanted to take a look at one of Mega Man's most impactful [Music] titles one of if not the first person brought onto the team was series veteran kg aune he was in shock upon receiving the order of working on a Mega Man game for the super famicom but with the thought of a free meal in mind he considered it an honor to work on the game alongside hay toi inafune was tasked with creating the main cast and while inafune would usually be the one working on the main characters he had asked Ki to do it even then inafune was designing this supporting character with his vision of a new Mega Man in mind as he said himself I wanted to make the character's personality a little more hardcore too and I knew that if I was working from the design of the traditional Mega Man I'd be stuck in that whole nice guy image as you probably know by now the character he designed was the fan favorite zero while Ki went on to design the titular protagonist of Mega Man X or its working title at the time super Rockman which is similar to how a lot of SNES games just added super to the beginning of their name like super ghost and goblins back on topic kg actually admitted that designing X gave him a little bit of trouble as the broader range of colors the super famicom had access to gave him a level of Freedom he wasn't used to another character inafune ended up creating was the main antagonist of the X Series Sigma he originally sketched three villains One short one tall and slender and another chubby eventually Sigma came about by melting these three designs together but the idea of a three antagonist team would later be used in Mega Man X2 with the X Hunters while Dr Wy had a more likable side to him Sigma was designed with absolute evil in mind bio also went through multiple design changes before definitively becoming the Boba copy we all know and love with one iteration having a z on his helmet which was later replaced with the sigma Insignia and another trading out his arm for a ball and chain when it came to designing the eight Mavericks of the game the designers made sure that they all stood out from one another via their stature and color palettes they went as far to make sure that you can tell each one by their silhouette while I've already covered the main cast of Mega Man X during development there originally two more supporting characters RX and r y who was a part of the Maverick Hunters while it's not confirmed this could possibly be RX and who knows maybe r y just kind of yep okay but for real though moving on to the gameplay side of things the developers wanted Mega Man X to be something familiar but with some Innovations one of the most Innovative and defining traits of Mega Man X and eventually the X Series as a whole is the armor system Mega Man X was being developed as RPGs like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy began gaining more popularity games that had your character grow as the adventure continued as stated by inafune himself we were working on this game at the time when RPGs were exploding onto the market the whole idea of experience points and additional Powers according to your character's level was becoming mainstream then there was Mega Man which was still a more classic representation of the action game genre I started to feel that Mega Man was not shining as brightly in this light that's why we wanted to bring in more powerups as far as weapons are concerned Mega Man's always had to get new weapons by defeating enemies system going so we wanted to add another form of powering up this probably also bled into other aspects of the game like heart tanks and subtanks how did the wall jump come into play in aun got mad and kicked a wall I'm not making that up by the way the game's iconic soundtrack was composed by capcom's Alpha Lila Group which featured several musicians and sound designers working at Capcom at first setu Yamamoto who contributed the majority of the tracks found in the game was the sole composer for Mega Man X he tried his best to make sure Mega Man X's music didn't imitate the music from Mega Man games of the past and eventually four more composers were brought on board to help complete the soundtrack with Yuki Ewa contributing chill Penguins theme Toshi hio horiyama contributing the password screen Yuki takahara contributing Boomer Ker's theme and lastly Makoto tamama zawa contributed both storm eagle and Spark mandr themes during the 1993 summer Consumer Electronic Show Mega Man X was revealed to North America for the first time later down the line Mega Man X would be featured in the pack watch section of Nintendo power's 50th issue as you probably noticed the images used in the preview all take place in a stage which didn't make it into the final game known as the White City eventually gamepro covered the game in their August issue and in September had covered the game on a much larger scale they included images of central Highway a much earlier version of x's completed armor which was all blue with a visor and more profound shorters and also went further in depth about the game's story they not only mention that rush and Mega Man's other helpers like Eddie and beat have joined the scrap Heap but that he had two new allies the previously mentioned RX and r y I honestly believe RX and r y would have served a similar role to rush our Eddie as it would make sense seeing how they cover RX and r y right after mentioning that rush and the other helpers are gone some of the earliest footage of Mega Man X currently available comes from gameer PowerUp episode 5 uploaded by chasem man 94 and showen Kai 93 uploaded by Satoshi Matrix both of these showings have a few aspects different to the final build of the game like the explosion animation for enemies and the life gauge having a p instead of X something present in the various early screenshots as well something notable about the gamepro episode specifically is the fact that it not only seemingly has an early build of the stage select screen but a Maverick that has never been seen in any piece of media the preview given during Shen Kai 93 shows us a lot of differences between this version and the final game like the fact that X seemingly only has one level of charge an unused jellyfish enemy appears and the Heart tank and sting chameleon stage is in a different spot there's also a different version of flame mammoth's theme playing throughout the trailer later during the winter Consumer Electronic Show of 1994 this inflatable version of X made an appearance decked out in the completed armor set this version of the armor has a mouth plate something that wouldn't be used in the final release danger danger all the bases are [Music] [Music] ccor when released Mega Man X was praised by critics with many applauding Mega Man's successful jump to more powerful Hardware however while the game was praised it did face some criticisms like some finding the game too easy compared to its predecessors and some Publications like Nintendo Power believing that the game changed too little about the standard formula the game follows Mega Man X shorten to X most of the time he was found within a capsule inside the late Dr lights lab by an archaeologist named Dr Kane after studying X's systems Dr Kane began replicating him producing reploids Androids who can think for themselves free from the three laws of robotics however as time pass an alarming number of reploids gone Rogue being labeled as Mavericks eventually Dr Kane founded the Maverick hunters in an attempt to protect the innocent from the Maverick attacks the commander of the Maverick Hunters Sigma eventually rebelled convincing nine of his fellow Maverick Hunters to join him whether it was through Force playing into their desires or even blind loyalty this leaves the Maverick Hunters with just X and zero who are entrusted with the mission of stopping sigma's Rebellion after an encounter with vile on Central Highway X is left doubting himself and his strength until zero tells him not to worry about it reminding X that he hasn't even reached his full potential yet and that once he does he could become zeros equal at first X starts off with a pretty low health bar and when taking the slide into account less movement options than his classic counterpart that is until you visit chill penguin stage where he gains the dash boots this one addition to X's move set completely changes the game accelerating the pace of it from here on out and as you continue playing the game it truly feels like X is becoming a more capable and versatile Hunter alongside his growing arsenal of weapons his damage output grows and he's becoming a lot more durable thanks to the chest piece and life UPS he's finding within the stages he's also able to stay in the fight even longer longer thanks to his subtanks and the previously mentioned weapons he takes from the Mavericks gain a more broader use once Amplified gaining two amazing defensive options strong offensive tools or even just means for an end however even with all this added power he wasn't a match for vile's Riot [Music] armor zero sacrifice fills x with enough energy to finally defeat vile with Sigma around the corner zero entrust x with the success of the mission X continues to fight his way through sigma's Fortress eventually reaching Sigma himself and after a hardfought battle he gets the better of Sigma taking out his former Commander after everything is said and done X begins to ponder how long he'll have to continue fighting the good fight and while he doesn't know the answer he knows that he'll always be ready to raise his Buster if it means protecting the innocent the way Mega Man X ties its story into its gamepl is honestly incredible and it's one of my favorite aspects of the game speaking of the game play Mega Man X is basically your standard Mega Man game but with some added bits of flavor as previously mentioned the armor system serves to enhance X's capabilities each piece of the armor is useful in its own way and it doesn't feel like a hassle to go out of your way for them I will admit though the headpiece does feel artificially useful compared to the rest if you know what I mean and on the topic of the heart tanks I understand why some people see it as unnecessary or annoying that they took away X's health and split it up but if he started with full health the game might have been too easy from the jump Mega Man X is definitely on the easier side of the franchise thanks to its level design being a lot more forgiving plus the added wall jump helping you out of Bottomless Pits some of the best weapons in the franchise and the subtanks making every moment manageable not that it's inherently a bad thing but it's worth mentioning considering the fact that Mega Man is known for its difficulty honestly my biggest problem with Mega Man X is that assuming you plan on getting all the upgrades and minimizing your backtracking your order is kind of forced because you of course have to start with chill penguin and then collect each armor piece and weapon accordingly so you can get the next item when it comes to the boss is I'm kind of mixed on them though most of the time boss fights are pretty HIIT and Miss with me but a lot of them completely fold when you use their weakness and I mean yeah you can just not use them but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be mentioned weakness is aside a lot of the bosses can keep you moving and some of their attacks do really good damage some encounters are definitely challenging as well like boss spider and wolf Sigma still give me a hard time every now and then overall they have a good amount of energy and like I said weakness is aside for the most part they're really enjoyable Mega Man X also holds what's most likely the most iconic reference to Street Fighter in a video game the hadoken can be obtained by collecting every other collectible including the armor pieces heart tanks and subtanks and returning to armored armadillo's stage after leaving the stage or falling into the bottomless pit a few times near the end of the stage the Pod will show up here's something new you might actually not know about the hadoken though did you know that you can actually do all the steps I just listed without all of the Collectibles collect whatever you're missing and go back to armored armadillo stage and the Pod will be waiting there how do I know this you may ask the heart tank and Spark mandrel stage this thing literally kills everything but wolf Sigma in one hit and while once again you can choose to not use it as it does break the difficulty of the game seeing the trouble and time you got to put yourself through to get it what here I come [Music] X just counting the SNES version alone Mega Man X went on to sell over 1 million copies and would later be re-released alongside its sequels in the Mega Man X collection for GameCube in PS2 even further down the line it would be made available through Wii Wii U and 3DS Virtual Console the most accessible version of the game today is through the Mega Man X Legacy Collection released in 2015 the game also got two remakes the first of which being Mega Man Maverick Hunter X released for the PSP in 2006 it updated the style to match that of Mega Man X8 with the incentive of bringing in new fans into the franchise and I really bought this for the video I hate myself sometimes well anyway Mega Man X is a classic and successfully launched a new series of Mega Man games for fans to enjoy for years on in setting the blueprint for not only its sequels but other games that take inspiration from it including other series of Mega Man games well first things first I'd like to thank the power of mirror for this awesome rendition of Mega Man X's box art it came out even better than I thought it would and considering you made it this far you'd probably enjoy his Instagram as it has a good mix of Dragon Ball Capcom and of course Mega Man art throughout second all the sources alongside the music with in the video are down below this video is really fun to do research for and who knows maybe I'll make more like it in the future well anyway thank you for watching this long I really appreciate it have a great rest of your day [Applause] [Music] peace
