they were over 47 000 Milli units per liter of insulin in this child when there should have been something in the order of 10 to 15. it became increasingly obvious that she wanted to be Center Stage it was that need to be adored that drove her forward similar events occurred in the let me trial it's almost as if she'd read the book if she's the only one there then she's the murderer throughout the trial of Lucy leppy there was one question that was never satisfactorily answered why would a young woman train to care for the most vulnerable members of society instead choose to harm and ultimately to kill them it is a question that the man who I'm joined by today has spent the best part of three decades thinking about in 1991 Stuart Clifton was a detective superintendent with Lincolnshire police in three months four children died nine fell suddenly ill tonight in Granada's World in action nurses say they were mystified could there be a serial killer working in the hospital two years later and in large part thanks to Stewart's hard work a 22 year old nurse called Beverly Allied would be convicted of those crimes um I think in in the Beverly Alec case it became increasingly obvious that she wanted to be Center Stage that she was she was the one that highlighted that a child had collapsed she was the one that wanted to call the the crush team the resuscitation team she was the one that was volunteering to go in ambulances when when children were being transferred to to to other hospitals and she's she seemed as if it was that need to be adored that drove her forward uh our investigation showed that on on every single occasion she had been with the with the child that had had collapsed sometimes she was allocated the care other times she'd placed herself into particular rooms where these uh children were being attacked and from what you've seen of the let me trial do you see some Echoes In This desire for attention seems to me that it's very very similar that that here you have a nurse that Revels in the attention that comes about as a result of highlighting the collapses of children most of them had gone in with relatively minor complaints bronchiolitis and that sort of thing the thing that you would expect after a winter and certainly none of them were expected to die and and have serious collapses in in the way that they did so we set about looking to for an explanation about why some of these children had collapsed multiple times and we picked on one little boy called Paul Crampton we managed to find a blood sample there were over 47 000 Milli units per liter of insulin in this child when there should have been something in the order of 10 to 15. he said that it was the second highest ever recorded the highest being a doctor that had used insulin um to commit suicide here for the very first time we had some hard evidence that suggested that the events that were unfold that had unfolded on the children's Ward at grandson were not natural events they were completely unnatural so we then began to look at each event individually if you like it we had teams of two that that looked at the events that surrounded the collapse of each child and there was something in the order of of 3435 collapses of children so we took on a mammoth task but as we did so we were able to pinpoint who had the opportunity to do things Becky Phillips had been sent home from the hospital discharged about tea time had grizzled during the the course of the evening at about two o'clock in the morning the parents had um discovered that she'd stop breathing they whipped her up took her into the a e department at Grantham hospital she was pronounced Dead on Arrival but the receiving doctor took blood and this little girl had also got a massive overdose of of insulin sadly this little girl that died in Becky Phillips was a twin and the twin sister was was taken in purely as a precaution and a few days later alet caused injury to her and she suffered massive brain damage and she convinced the parents that she she was the one that had managed to save her yes and was subsequently invited to be the Godmother but I I don't think you ever get admissions from these sort of people but I think what you can do is to draw an inference the first thing that it highlights the insulin is that the events are unnatural events in in the Alec case that there was needle tracking in in one child where air had been injected and there was squeeze injuries and I've read in the media where similar events occurred in the let me trial it's almost as if she'd read the book I like used what whatever method was available to her and there were um raised potassium in in some of the some of the children there there was uh lignocaine in in in one child what we tried to show was that the collapse was not natural we set about trying to trying to discover who had worked with shifts and then set about looking at who was on duty for each of these collapses charted it put in a little X every time a childhood collapse and it became quite apparent to everybody that there was only one person Beverly Allied that was there for every single collapse I even sent it to a statistician and asked for her analysis of it and she she basically said well it speaks for itself yes if she's the only one there then she's the murderer once you've established that the collapses are unnatural and that one nurse is on for on duty for every single collapse and particularly if you can put them at the bedside it Beggars belief that more than one is doing it they found a a you strange a hospital pillowcase uh and most notably something called an allocations book which really was the old school writing book where the nurse in charge wrote down which nurse was allocated the care of which particular child she'd taken it from the hospital so that any investigation would not lead people to believe that she was the allocated nurse for the children that had collapsed a duplicate book had been kept by the nurse in charge of the children's Ward and the relevant pages in there had been torn out Alex said at the time that she was she was using um she was going to use it to to do a diary but she never actually didn't she never kept a diary during the interview she distanced herself from the events you know with with statements like well I wasn't there then at that particular time I was at lunch and and in many of these we were able to disprove what she was saying but she went on to say that perhaps I had a bug perhaps the ventilation and the plumbing system in the in the hospital was wasn't working correctly so she was looking for excuses if you like for what was actually occurring but you can't use that explanation when children are being poisoned with insulin you have to understand that once the Adoration begins to swell um people feel sorry because you're the nurse that's having to cope with all those things it's very difficult to stop very very difficult to stop um and I I don't think that despite the fact that there's now been two of these cases and let me that the NHS is particularly switched on to it to looking at it we're very used to going to a body in a ditch that's got a knife stuck between the shoulder blades it's a lot different when you've got a seven week old baby that's collapsed and died you rely on the medical profession to lead you in and into what has actually caused it these nurses that that actually cause injury to children and and kill also write up the nursing notes the nurse tells the doctor what what has happened and it's not necessarily the truth it's only when you begin to delve and find what the truth really is that you that they're able to paint a different picture and and I don't think that that is done often enough when there is suspicion of these sort of events I think definitely there'll be other cases that have been missed and you imagine it's very very difficult to to show that the collapse of a child who is not expected to collapse and die is as a result of a criminal light
