i'm going to show you three different  ways that you can hand stitch a hem   the first stitch we're going to do is a  catch stitch which is strong and flexible   i'm starting with a wide hem that's been  folded up a half inch and then two inches   up i'm going to start here on the inside  of the folded hem by anchoring a stitch if you're doing this in your finished  project you might have a side seam   that's a great place to put this anchoring stitch now i'm going to move to  the main body of my fabric   right above the hem here that's  where i want to take my first stitch   so i'm going to put my needle in and try  to pick up just one thread from the fabric go ahead and pull that needle all the way through now i'm going to move back to my hem and  pick up another small piece of fabric this tail here from the end of my thread  i'm just going to tuck that back underneath   so that that will disappear into my hem i'm going to go back to the main part of  my fabric and take another little stitch   the catch stitch is my favorite probably  because it's the fastest one for me to do now once i get to the end i'm  going to take my last stitch   and then i'm going to go into the fold of the hem  right here and make that final anchoring stitch   now to make the end of my thread disappear i'm  going to slip my needle into the hem so this is   going between all the layers slide my needle  through and pull it up a couple inches away   i'm going to go ahead and give the thread a  little tug and then snip it close to the fabric   that's going to hide my thread tail in the middle  of my hem that's how you do a catch stitch so the   inside has this zigzag pattern and the outside  has a completely invisible hem the next stitch   i'm going to show you is the slip stitch so  this is similar to the catch stitch in that   you won't see anything from the outside but you  also won't see anything from the inside so it's   a nice option if you want a clean finished hem  another difference is i'm going to start on the   right side of my project and move right to left  if you notice on the catch stitch i moved left   to right so i'm going to start by anchoring  my stitch inside the fold of the hem again you can also do this in a side seam  if that is part of your project   tuck that tail down in there and go ahead  and move to the main body of my fabric   and just take one thread from  that piece of fabric there now i'm going to go ahead and insert my needle  right across from that first stitch into the fold   of my hem and i'm going to slide my needle  in this fold right here and come back up   about a quarter of an inch away now i'm  going to go ahead and take one thread again   from my fabric right at the same point  that my needle came out of my hem and then go back in and slide along the fold of your hem there  because the slip stitch is nearly invisible   you can use it for other things besides hem so  you could use it for applying a patch pocket or   an applique to a project now that i'm at the  end i'm going to make my last couple stitches and then go ahead and anchor my stitch in the fold of the hem here and again tuck my thread  inside so that it disappears so as you can see i have a perfectly clean  finish here on the inside and on the outside   so the last stitch we'll do is the blind stitch  here i have my nice wide hem again the only   difference is i'm going to fold this hem under  so that i have an eighth of an inch showing here   and i'm going to go ahead and press that to  start i'm going to anchor my thread on the   hem side of my fabric so just as a reminder this  is the hem and this is the main part of my fabric now i'm going to the main part of that  fabric and picking up just a single thread now we're going to go back over  to the hem and pick up a thread the nice part about the blind stitch is  it moves along pretty quickly you're just   bouncing back and forth from the hem and your  main fabric and then back to the main fabric when i get to the end i'm going to anchor  my stitch onto the hem portion of my fabric and you can tuck your needle and thread back into  the middle of the hem here so that it disappears so at this point my stitching is visible from  the inside but as soon as i fold up this hem   everything is gone here and then from the  outside nice and clean so i'd go ahead   and press this crease out and be all set and  now you know three ways to hand stitch a hem
