here we have the brand new Toyota Tundra with the V6 turbo instead of the V8 engine I'm going to tell you the truth about it it's not a demo Toyota didn't give it to me I love the look of a truck it's the full-size Toyota truck and he got the TRD 4x4 off-road beautiful Wheels he's got a lot of water in here the man's thirsty that's because he runs a barbecue see all of that charcoal he uses that stuff up now everybody knows throughout history the Tundras have been insanely long lasting trucks but this is a kind of a controversial one because it doesn't have the V8 under the hood as you take off the goofy top you can see it's a twin turbo got a turbo on each side and it puts out 389 horsepower so that's eight horsepower more than the V8 that it replaced and in terms of torque the V8 has 401 pound-feet of torque but this V6 is 479 pound-feet of torque it's got more torque on paper seems like it's got a lot of power the biggest problem the Tundras always have were they were gas Hawks now you take my grandson's Thunder it's the five seven liter V8 engine if he drives it normal he gets about 10 miles a gallon so far the owner of this gets 14 to 15 miles a gallon it's average to get somewhat higher but of course A lot of times those are fantasy figures now this is four-wheel drive and it's rated at overall 21. he's getting between 14 and 15. that's quite a big difference now it's better than the 10 yes still not great but it's a big truck what do you expect got all kinds of technology in it with Toyota's new Engine Systems I do have to say Toyota Engineers are pretty good as you can see here you've got coolant for the engine engine but also coolant for the intercooler for the turbo more efficient you can't expect about 15 miles a gallon it was rated at 21 so that's kind of a disappointment and that's not with him towing a bunch of stuff now he does have a gigantic trailer that he brings his Taco business on when he goes to special events I can't wait to see what kind of gas mileage he gets when he tows that with this that'll be interesting he hasn't done that yet so I can't get those figures out but normal driving 15 is a lot lower than the rate at 21. now I've seen some of these V6 engines from Toyota make noise they didn't build them right but this one let's listen to it foreign startup and really once it warms up off the cold start it makes a little noise nothing outrageous but even sitting here it makes quite a bit more noise than the V8s did that's Quiet Mind you that's what the hood open and really now you don't hear anything at all no it's a V6 but it's not going to be shaky probably at all as you can see it's not shaking at all and he's been driving it conservatively you can see here he's getting 14 and a half miles a gallon here which is an average but that's well below they rate it at 21 miles a gallon so don't be fooled by a lot of these figures now when it came to price he paid less price they did not mark it up I've seen people Mark these things up a ton he said he saw one at carvana they wanted 75 grand for it and it's cash price as you can see was 61.94 that's a real price that's not you know the lowest end vehicle where they advertise oh it's only 39 000 forget all that crap you want a nice truck and I do have to say the Hopkinsville Toyota dealers are fair worth and because there's only a cloth seat so you didn't like it so they put leather seats and everything in and they didn't charge them anything extra for it most places are going to hit you for everything but then again it's Hopkinsville Kentucky you get in more rural areas generally the dealers will treat you better because they've got a smaller Market in the big city they can rip everybody off but in smaller places if they get a bad reputation that's going to be it for their their business so a lot of times it pays to God I remember people in Houston they used to drive way up north of town go to Conroe Texas buy vehicles there and they'd save thousands now you can see it's got excellent backup camera it flickers because I'm shooting it with a camera but it doesn't flicker for your eyes you can turn the traction control on or off look at the space in the back there's a lot of room in these things and it's all electronic four-wheel drive so you can go two wheel high four wheel high four wheel low that's it we are talking really simple and the dash tells you what's happening if you forget gee I wonder if I'm in four high well I wonder if I'm in four low well I wonder if I'm just two wheel drive of course it's got various Drive modes normal tow mountains crawl if you wanna do some rock rolling and check out the center console man there's all kinds of room and there's also all kinds of charging and this isn't just some basic rear window here check it out not just a little piece the whole window opens up and that closes not just a slide much more impressive but not a fan favorite for me but you got no choice got electric parking brake that's just how they're all going you'll hear that if you idle too long you don't want to damage the car so I warned you if you Auto for an hour to shut itself off you can bypass it by pushing a button too but not a bad idea turbos aren't made for just sitting and idling Forever This is a brand new truck as you can see it's only got 597 miles on it he has had no problems yet now the early ones had problems with turbochargers right but this is a brand brand new one he just got it's got 597 miles we'll see if Toyota has fixed those problems as time goes on he lives three blocks down the street and I eat at his taco stand all the time so I'll keep asking them okay what's happening are you having any problems with it I'm assuming Toyota fix that problem we'll find out over time and if it does believe me he'll tell me and I will tell everyone else so let's take it for spin now it's a big truck high up in here doesn't have smooth ride smooth shifting you say they feel like a king on the road driving this thing around crisp handling for a pickup truck we'll take it out to our little drag strip here and we'll see what this 389 horsepower can do on the straight road a normal Drive here we go the turbos are kicking in [Music] it's got plenty of acceleration although I do have to say the shifts they weren't that smooth a lot of people complain about that they want to get the best gas mileage possible but to me it wasn't crisp enough now you can of course shift it yourself okay we put it down a couple gears we'll put in third gear step on it [Music] that's quite a bit better so really if you want to drive like a maniac shifted manually as you can see we're now intense gear you got 10 gears you can mess with up or down so realizing that it's got a 10 speed transmission but it's still only averaging 21. to me that's kind of a disappointment because I've driven big Fords that had 10 speed transmissions they got in the upper 20s some of them so mind you it is a Toyota probably last forever if you take care of it I still like the V8s better the grunt the noise the acceleration this may have twin turbos but with that 10-speed transmission the old five seven V8s had more pickup and that just shows you the torque rating can be misleading because this has quite a bit more torque than the V8 but it doesn't feel that way see I didn't put the turn signal on went over the line and it knew it so it's warning me obviously that system works it's warning it's warning warning you're driving like an idiot my girl's just driving around it runs smooth the silk you're just gonna find but your perfectionist like me any 10-speed transmission is often going to have a little gear hunting here and there as it hunts to get the best gas mileage possible that's just how those things are if you don't like that egg you can shift it manually they won't have any and I do have to say the turbos are pretty whisper quiet you can barely hear them kicking on and off yeah as it spools down hardly any noise at all now the man who owns this truck bought it as a business decision because as I said it's going to be pulling this along and if this truck lasts as long as the older Tundras did it would be a wise business decision he's only six blocks away from me so we're gonna keep in touch and see exactly what happens to this thing as it ages here we have a 2002 carrying I bought it 10 years ago for 10 grand but he's put almost twenty thousand dollars into it maintaining and fixing stuff what went wrong and how can you learn from his mistakes here we go well now he bought it with 60 something thousand miles on it for 10 grand but at about a hundred and Ten Thousand Miles the transmission went out and he had to have it rebuilt normally Toyota's last longer than that but there were two things going on here the first thing is obviously the previous owners did not maintain his mechanic told them at 120 000 Miles when it started acting up the fluid's black he says I'm not going to change it because then it might not even move down the road so he ended up having it rebuilt now if the original owners did it correctly if they only would have changed the transmission filter and fluid say every 40 000 miles on this old one they were using more basic fluid the fluids so they are better than these older fluids it probably wouldn't have had any problems at all that's number one and number two is that's one of the reasons I really advise people if they're going to buy a Camry don't get the V6 four-cylinder engine the V6 has more horsepower strains the transmission more I have seen four cylinder Camrys with a quarter of a million miles on them they've never had the transmission fluid touched these old ones and they still weren't all that black and they shifted fine you have to take better care of the Transmissions if you got a V6 engine there's more torque they get more wear wear creates black and then he had to spend thousands to rebuild the transmission it's working fine now but that's something to warn you about you're gonna buy one of these used look at the four bangers they got enough pickup they're not slow and they generally don't get the transmission problems and a bigger V6 is going to happen now the next problem they had was the brake rotors cup warp and sometimes as quickly as 5 000 miles now again the V6 engines are going to wear them out faster they weigh more these do have a tendency of warping now he did learn one lesson though he switched the rotors recently the Brembo rotors which are good rotors but instead of five thousand miles now he's like 15 000 miles and they're warm open again it needs to go one step further and I have to chastise his mechanic on this one because the guy turned the rear rotors and put semi-metallic pads on it don't ever use sell my metallic pads unless you're a race car driver you're going to change the rotors after every race metal eats up they'll wear out faster now the front he had Brembo rotors and Brembo brake pads but the acabono ceramic pads are the best pads being quiet stopping perfectly but being ceramic not wearing the rotors as fast I'll give you an example I changed the rotors out on my son's old carrying and my grandson's driving right he bought it new the road is Warped at about 14 000 miles and I just put on regular rotors but at cabono brake pads and it went well over a hundred thousand miles something about air cabono brake pads they know how to make a certain ceramic configuration that acabona uses they really don't warp stuff much and here's the strangest thing in them all a lot of times you can use the cheaper rotors with them and this cheap routers won't even warp because they just dissipate heat better in the ceramic acabonas do not wear them unevenly so they warp and then your steering wheel starts shaking when you're breaking so a lot of people understand brake pad material is probably even more important than getting the most expensive rotors because even the cheap rotors are made out of cast iron that stuff's strong yeah it's not like it's weak it's strong stuff it's the pads that are one of the biggest things so if you don't like noise you want rotors that don't warp as much go hack a boner they're going to cost a bit more but hey rotors are a pain to change you won't have to deal with all that stuff no he's on the second set of front tires he's still got the first set that he bought in the back and that's normal wear and tear that you expect them you'd expect that on any car now he wanted a good ride so he had all four struts done with bilsteins and he said the total bill was about twenty five hundred dollars well he's got one complaint one of the rare ones is starting to leak it hasn't been on there all that long no as I check in here I can feel in the straw and there's just a little tiny bit that's a little seeping where when we go to the other side it's still bone dry but it doesn't have any particular bounce at all still pretty stiff a lot of times you'll get a little seepage these days the seals are made to seep a little bit so the seal doesn't run dry otherwise the Rod's going up and down on the drive seal to blow it out and it'll all leak out and there's nothing dripping on the bottom you got to take the boot up and reach inside to feel a little bit of it so it's nothing outrageous wonder whether you should keep this thing as old as it is but I mean they sure know how to paint these things still got phenomenal paint job on it it doesn't burn oil between oil changes and the AC it still blows freezing cold ah of course it's dated Toyota was putting CDs check it out it's got a tape deck too mostly young people have no idea what to take those magnetic types that played music but the leather interior that's still in decent shape the engine's still relatively quiet now I realize yeah it is a timing belt so we got to change it every once in a while he had that done at 90 000 miles but this is not a worrisome engine because it's a three liter Toyota V6 it is a non-interference engine if the timing belt broke you'd be stranded but it wouldn't hurt the engine one iota you would just take it apart put a new belt on it would not hurt anything so it's not like one of those Honda v6s that they still use to this day and odyssey and stuff that's a rubber timing belt V6 that's interference on you don't have to worry about that if you don't want to change it sometimes I've seen these things with 300 000 miles in the original belt which is never snapped so you never know it won't hurt anything at the starter change that's normal wear and tear but looks to me that the alternator is pretty old so I still got the original alternator so here we go with a fancy scan tool all plugged in oh here we go no it's camry02 and we'll do an automatic scan here we go well it's a typical Camry everything is green fire it up we'll start looking at the dead now he did say he had one small problem not every once in a while go as fast comes to stop it would stall out on him well I told him I said yeah the fuel injectors might be dripping a little fuel well it looks like my guess was spot on the short-term fuel trim it's subtracting 4.72 percent sometimes three point nine percent and then the other side and number two it's subtracting 3.9 and you can see up here now it's minus 5.5 minus 4.72 no that's not outrageous but it's a Toyota I see some of these things running almost 99 percent efficiency even when they're older than this right so it's running a little bit Rich I'd say the best thing to do watch my video make your car run better with a little spray cleaner you can spray clean the throttle and the mass air flow sensor and throw some of Bernie's ATS Albuquerque fuel cleaner in the gas tank I generally think it's going to stop stalling them it only does it once in a while it is mechanic back in Texas as well there's no codes are dead that I can see well this shows you that it is like I say running a little bit Rich when it subtracts fuel it's subtracting it because it sees the engines running a little bit Rich the oxygen sensors sense ah there's a little bit too much on burn fuel so it tries to lean it up so you're not outrageous but a little bit look at some more data the map looks good it's a three liter engine should be around three 2.96 that's as close as you're going to get them the air fuel fuel trim hey it's pretty close 1.00 is perfect and there it is 0.99 it's pretty close for an old car and whoever rebuilt the transmission did a pretty good job you can see there's no transmission codes at all stored no misfire 0.00 and it shows out of the six cylinders they're all zero two individually see the computer that's testing the airflow meter all tests have completed and passed Tom knowledge in excellent shape let's take it for a spin now the inside steering wheel is typical that's just the leather and rubber rubbing they do that but we did have that little steering wheel column assembly replaced which I find weird but then he told me he had two shops working on the suspension then one of them said oh well uh the steering's broken so we got to replace all that I'm assuming they broke it when they did the work because that's pretty rare on one of these now if it had been a Sienna van the older Sienna Vans the second part of the steering column often breaks and then when you turn them here they go clunk clunk clunk it didn't do that when he took it in so I'm assuming they screwed that one up so here we go we'll roll up the windows get a little silence still rides quite well it's burners quite well the one thing people say these are kind of boaty cars they they do have a tendency of understanding now I can't hear the wheel bearings in the back are going out though hear that their wheel bearings are starting to wear out now it does have 142 000 miles on it that's kind of typical it's got decent power stop here see what it's got foreign not bad still a nice smooth riding car my legs that don't burn any oil you did have to have the transmission overhauled but as you can see it down shifts good they'll pass then it up shifts pretty smooth yeah she's gone freezing cold still a nice riding car those buildings are pretty good shock absorbers you want to replace them with high quality ones you know you can't argue them they're expensive but they do give a better ride I'll tell them he should keep it I wouldn't he was wondering if you get rid of it a little cleaning still runs perfectly fine AC is cold and his little bit of a glitch that he's got it's probably because it's running a little just a little bit too rich and that should certainly fix it up you get too much fuel when you're decelerating they can make it conk out because it floods it up there's no serious cause anything on this vehicle even though it's old it's the Toyota they're well made I mean if you're worried and you're buying a used one too road test it with the transmission and if you listen to me in the beginning buy one with a four instead of a six cylinder engine because their Transmissions have a tendency of lasting quite a bit longer and having less blips on them because even my wife's Lexus which is the same year as this Camry same color too really it has the occasional glitch in it and we just live with it here we have a 2001 Toyota Celica with 360 000 miles on it check it out it's got more than my Celica has on it and I know some people are going to say Scotty you're a hypocrite you said don't buy those new Celicas because they were cheaper made and they have problems but not this one and it's for one main reason as we see under the hood it's the engine as you can see here this is the important thing you must check out it is a 1zzfe engine that puts out a respectable 148 horsepower for a small like car a lot of the guys that race them they want the 2zz engine because it puts out 180 horsepower that's a big mistake that is the Yamaha design engine I have never seen one of these modern celica's 2009 that had the 2zz engine that wasn't on a second or third or even fourth engine they had problems not this one because it's the smaller Engine with less horsepower I'm not making it up there's no mileage and his father was the original owner so I know it's real we'll start it up with the brake on starts right up okay all that mileage what does it sound like sounds pretty good you can hear a little valve rolling but I mean with all that mileage on it now you can see it's still pretty quiet well that's because this is the Toyota designed and built engine theoretically you're supposed to adjust the valves the overhead cams go on stainless steel shims that open and close the valve so to adjust this royal pain you got to measure them if they're off you got to take the engine apart then you got to measure the old shims and make them that much bigger so they fill the clearance giant paint but okay 360 000 miles these have never been adjusted like I said as far as the original owner still runs fine and it's not out of clearance those crazy stainless steel shims boy Toyota makes stainless steel shims they last the four celica's never been touched either and it still has the original stainless steel shims got an engine with this many miles and it sounds that good that shows you that they're building them right but like I said if you bought that 2zz engine they had problems with oil real scavenge you take a corner too fast the oil pump would suck air in would blow the engines up I saw so many blown engines in those things this one ZZ engine is a better all-around engine yes not as fast as the two's easy but the 2cz is slow as can be until you get it up to about 4 500 RPM then it takes off so not only did it have a bad design with the oil pump scavenge the guys had to race them high to get all those 180 horsepower and they just blew up engines by over revving them the soldier got it from his father for a whole thousand dollars and unfortunately it came from Chicago so it's got a little rust here and a little here at Chicago for you and the hubcaps are gone but when he gets the house he's going to park it in the garage and start fixing it off these can easily go half a million miles but you must say hey Scott it's so good how come they don't make him anymore well that has to do with production quality overall sell the cost it's the old body style they cost a lot more when they came out with a new body style they were thousands of dollars cheaper than the old body style they are a little thinner and lighter but of course that makes them go faster the main flaw was that 2zz engine unless you wanted to fix one up rebuild the engine and race around in it and then fix it when it breaks again these all that mileage obviously it's Dependable 360 000 miles look how smooth it is you are going to hear a few Creeks because this came from Chicago the land of rust and so all the bushings are going to be dried from the salt and there's little rusty Parts but I got my hands off the wheel it still tracks perfectly fine and as we Corner around it sticks still a lot of fun to drive even though this is an automatic I'd rather have a standard hey but Packers can't be choosers he got it from his father for a thousand bucks so if he ever wants to convert it to a standard he could do it if he wanted to and yeah the check engine lights on we're going to check that out later now we'll come to our little test station over here it's starting now see all that smooth shift with all this mileage on it the Japanese know what they're doing how many cars for 360 000 miles gonna go like this when you step on it they don't make any odd noises and when you take the foot off they smoothly shift back up here so here we are back to square one does the gear shift Shake no it doesn't it still runs good but it does have the check engine I saw we're going to check that out so here we go with the big computer we did all that Celica with a 1fa 2001. here comes the magic the smart scan now this is an old car it's 20 years old so it's not going to have all the bells and whistles of a modern one but there's still a lot of information we can get out of this now we know the check engine light's on the only code is in the ECM so oxygen sensor heater Bank One Sensor One oxygen sensor heater Bank One sensor two all right now we don't care about that at all here in Tennessee for one reason what happens is the heater circuits of the oxygen sensors burn out over time the genius Engineers found that oh the cars pollute a little bit too much the first minute or two of operating so when you start it up there's a little heater core like a miniature hair dryer inside each oxygen sensor these have obviously burned out they burn out over time if you replaced it the check engine light would go out you'd have to change them both and they're not cheap but it wouldn't run any different that it's running and since they don't do emissions testing here in Tennessee most guys will just leave it they don't care let's look at the data stream here see what kind of shape it's in it's an old car all right it's got 82 points of data so we'll look at those if you remember the dad I did on a Dodge late model four-year-old Dodge the other day that had 380 points of data but still 82 it gives you some information so we'll start scrolling through to see if anything's odd everything's blue and good so far and this is what we want to see no misfires at all I can tell that it's not misfiring but it's never misfired it would have any history involved in it the ignition Advance is normal and stable those are fuel inject pictures and for a car with 360 000 miles on it not bad the fuel trim is 99.16 that's pretty close to a hundred with a mileage to pay that tiny bit off I wouldn't complain hey I'm 67 soon to be 68. I'm probably operating at about 60 percent efficiency now not 99.16 here's another example how good it is the total fuel trim on number one is only one percent I've seen brand new Chryslers that were more than that once you get to eight or ten you'll feel it if it gets to 20 25 it'll trip a check engine like oh but at that many miles and it's only off one percent and in this case it's only adding 1.01 it probably needs the fuel injectors cleaned you know it's got that many miles on it they will get 30 and not spray perfectly cone shaped spray anymore okay so you got a car with 360 000 miles that's running at basically 99 efficiency what's to not like there it's an automatic but you saw how smoothly that thing shipped Under full load the power windows still work but yes Toyota did go wrong with the Celica house they put that 180 horsepower engine and a ton of them my Celica isn't a race car it's basically a Toyota Corolla with a different body and suspension but it's no race car well they did make the last Model celica's lighter they're a lot cheaper to make they were thousands less than the 99 Celicas were but when I put that engine in they got such a bad reputation and even then they couldn't compete with real sports cars that were putting out 253 400 horsepower they went down the wrong road you could find one of these that's got the ones easy engine in it you can have a lot of fun on the cheap they're still reliable Toyotas they're fun to drive but they're not race cars at the same time the Toyota 86 that were the Subarus they didn't make them they're just bought them from Subarus they're not race cars either that was kind of the replacement of these and they're not race cars either I'm kind of disappointed when I get it I'm like gee paid all that money for that new car didn't see them all that fast to me you can pick them up cheap just take my advice you see it's got that 2zz engine designed by Yamaha run away unless you want an expensive Money Pit as the engine blows so if you never want to miss another one of my new car repair videos remember to ring that Bell [Music] [Music]
