3 Easy Lettering Layout Compositions Tricks - Stefan Kunz

hey what's up legends welcome back to another YouTube livestream I'm excited to be here on a Friday afternoon with you guys I hope that you are having a fantastic week and we're about to start in look into composition tricks and tips especially three ways to always help you with composition whenever you need it most so when I am out of ideas I've created like three simple tricks to always be able to come up with great composition and never be really disappointed or never have a blank to draw from so this is what we're going to do and I'm gonna just pop in here some little text and just show you guys kind of like what I've been up to so my name is different codes I'm a lettering artist from Zurich and I do these live streams every week and I'm always here to actually hopefully inspire you zoom calls and so this is really exciting and amazing so today we're actually going to look at something brand new and I'm excited for that but before that Before we jump into that I just want to take bring the content to you and just to make sure that you guys see all this good stuff that I do so without further ado let's start with the very first trick in composition which is a little something that I've come up with and it's the important words layout so in the background you can see still moving and that's a kind of the fun part about that but important word layout is one of the easiest ways to kind of create a awesome looking layout without a problem so how does this work well kind of like the word itself says like the title says it's the important word layouts so let's see if I can jump over to my first camera here over there and then pop me back in on this side so you guys can still see me this is awesome and I wanted to just to say everyone hi who is jumping in from Indonesia Switzerland Thailand even Wow and I'm sure Canada Wow Indonesia Colombia so many great places that you guys are joining in from so we get everyone represented in the whole wide world jumping in here this is amazing so important words layouts as the word says you focus on the important words which is one of the things you should always do so let me just bring up a quote that I have and so kind of like on the background of my phone I have you can do anything but not everything so I want to show you an example first of important word layouts kind of all over the place so one of them is kind of like this one here so you can see the important words are all in big and always the same thing and then just you fill out the rest with the small words that are less important kind of like I am chosen not for a second I am who you say I am the other one here the Lord will fight for you the Lord again Lord fight in you is big and then you just have those filler words that are in between the same way we did that on Monday as far as I can remember my mind is just a little bit all over the place but we did this on Monday and here you see the same thing appears one style like those big words in a massive way are the big rewards so this is an easy way so if you take it for example you can do anything so I'll write that down you can do anything but not everything so long quotes and I'm just gonna well you you get the points here it's it's on anything here so I'm trying to say like alright you can do do is pretty important anything so we can put that into one line but not everything so that is important too and I just see that we just have a patreon Jesse Hart come thank you so much Jesse for joining our patreon group and so this is amazing so you can do anything but not everything so do anything but not do anything not everything so I like this so we got you can those are the small words so you would put that into one line you can and then you'd have do anything kind of like that here and of course you would make it sure that it's straight and all that but and then you'd have to not everything so you could either put that into one line or you could also just change that around and just say like alright you can we keep that small we'll have to do here large and then anything and I can move that around a little bit that but not and then we'll have the knots in 20 years somewhere and then everything kind of like this so you can see already you'll you grab out those big words and you can change kind of like the dew and anything suddenly you play around with this style so the next part would be kind of like again I still know that you and can like simple all straight lines and then I'll have the do I'll change the style here to match kind of like a straight thing do anything I'll put that pretty much in the same size so again priority on the important words and then really play around with that anything here any thing like this and then here I can probably just play around with those styles and then add to here the butts and then again with the same style here not every thing so this is the very first one important words layout you see it took us like three goes three minutes to do that you go from one side you choose which words you want to focus in on and then you kind of go after that you just focus on these and you put them into one line or again here we play around two lines but this is already a fun layout and then if you tweak it a little bit around you can kind of like put that into an arc so change that you can put it into an arc but the rest I like the way it is I can play around with those ligatures here play around with that and then finalize it so if I would have to finalize it like this here this is an easy way to do that so you can do [Music] like that right but same size not like this and there we go that would be the very first layouts trick style that you can use to create something epic something amazing something easy just by really focusing on the really important words and just do that every key that I have nope I do not have another example to show you right here but we're going stepping into the next one which is the version number two which is the important words layout so the next one that is important is shape layout so shape layout is another really important way to create designs so it's really the way it sounds it's it starts off with having the quote and then starting off with a shape so you actually start by using a shape and you kind of introduce all the single words into that shape so to show you this on it's actually going around saying alright let's you have like what kind of shapes do you have you have a circle you have a square you have kind of like a hourglass a diamond shape you have like these like these overall shapes but you can go even further you can say like you know how cool would it be to have like a a head like head face or shape of a head like an illustration another person and then you write in the words inside here and kind of like fill that out so let me show you an example of that this is kind of a style that I used to do that so it's kind of like filling out like a square is pretty much the same thing so you know kind of like your basic shape is a square and you will try to fit in everything else inside that shape and of course a circle could be the same thing so for example if you have a circle um like you can do like the same shape that I use here let me see I need to hide vacations come back so here you go kind of like you already have you see that shape that is inside here so you will get like you can and then do anything like that was kind of like a little bit special with having that in between but or like that but not everything and there are tons of example that you can use that so again if you use the shape of a mountain like you have the mountain here and you kind of like try to get all the words fit inside here and you get creative how these shapes work how these will be very intricate or not but the best way is to really play around with these so again if you see like the example is a head shape so let me see if I can illustrate a nice head shape here in school you learn kind of how to draw the shape of the head something like that right and now you say like you take a quote you go on Pinterest you look up a quote that you feel like is great fitting something inspirational maybe I feel like Einstein is usually something Einstein quotes something not too long once you stop learning you stuff you start dying so that's that one is really perfect I'm kind of like filling out Lera right let me just add some bass lines here so this line will help me to kind of like fill this in or even I can start just like up here so I'll kind of like Bend those letters around to kind of like fit that in once and I like I can even swap around to some a small cap letter once you stop so again here I could I could go around I think I want to show you guys like you stopped you and then learning should be prominent so we'll take that here it's a very simple trick easy to do and of course if you have just a tiny little bit more time you can really implement those ideas but you get the point I guess learning you stop you start dying in any kind like here you kids go start and then that's where you would just probably and and like the bigger word some like this so and then you would fill it out or kind of leave it open this is where I didn't have the time here to just play around with that but easy way to really get a cool-looking composition even better is like you get an image of Einstein you put that on top of his head you kind of mix it up and you get something really amazing to do so the shape composition is really by just starting off with a shape like going off with basic shapes going off with like shape of an animal of a reindeer of a person and a picture that you have like a silhouette of a person would be amazing too and so that's also a really easy way to create a awesome looking composition just by that and then filling it out is what takes a little time of practice to to really come up with those ideas make sure that you kind of like play around with it but the more you practice the better you get and again this is just to have something whenever you have like a bad day you just know like boom this is awesome I can do this when I need to so then next step and this is the final one of those three magic tricks that you need to know for composition the final one is the box's layout so box's layout is something very fun to do the boxes loud is actually a great technique that you can use and this actually I have a example here of a piece that I made so this is kind of like creating like these different boxes for every single word that you have those look amazing this is the perfect best way to show you guys so you have all of these boxes for every single worth so I've kind of like swapped it here so I introduced another box here and all that so then you just need to fill out every single box with one word and everybody knows how to fill in a word into a just a square like it's kind of like using just a piece of paper and then filling it out now the interesting part is I have another example that I did and it's this one here it's win and iPads iPad pro 12-inch in a one year Adobe subscription so you can see I created all these boxes I created like beautiful textures inside of all these boxes as well I just need to make sure that you guys can see it without the light and yeah so there's all these elements that I can introduce there and I've not been doing so many of these but they are actually super simple to do and you can do that at any single time so let me show you how that works and how you can do that yourself so let's jump in to the screen and so again let's see what we can get for a quote that was a quote that we used last time let's get a coffee quote a coffee quote is always good to use and I feel like I'm rushing through this whole idea here and to tell you all about this Coffee quotes funny well funny would be nice I must get up my coffee means I must get up my coffee need me there we go today's good mood is sponsored by coffee well this one is great today's good mood is sponsored by coffee so the very first thing that I do here is I count up the word so one two three four five six seven so I need to divide piece of paper by seven let's see if we actually will create like I'll see this is my canvas that I have at my disposal so this is what I have to divide by seven and let's see today's so we'll put that into the box here and good mood I can actually see I can actually put these into two boxes like this good mood and then the is sponsored by I'll put these into a long shorts here and coffee in the final one so now all I have to do is for example start here with today just try to today's some like this and then maybe even you know and I the the fun thing is I can go over these boxes those are not necessary to keep me hung up but I can like then cut them off and like transpose them the way it is kind of with this one here with this piece so I kind of went over those boards here those edges and it's still nice it's really it comes out really clean so again here I have the very first one today's and then we add good like I can start by putting this in here and then we'll see you mood will change the style again like this and then the is and we'll have like sponsored again we'll go over short yeah bye and then we'll have like coffee again and scripts so like that and then you kind of like divide it up in all these sections actually this alone could maybe potentially give like a cool cool layout but now again if you kind of like divide this up this piece of paper get that black pen actually here and then kind of like cut this off a little bit more on this side then cut here off and then depending on how I fill in these spots like I can add like a circle in here a circle in there or it kind of like spikes something like I can play around with it as much as I want to I can add textures behind every single one of those pieces I can again straighten this one out as much as I want the really cool thing is how you play around with every single box and just by actually reducing it to these boxes you don't have to think about it too much like you start stop worrying about like the whole quote like everything together like this is for me is like oh this would be easy and I can just fill that out make it colorful and we're back here like boom you got something or the same thing with the iPad giveaway that I did like right here boom it's got all the really cool stuff like these elements you can add like these arrows pointing to something these flashes just showing you like well there's something new coming out and like you can duplicate like those drop shadows making those 3d animation side playing around with all these different styles and so you got all of that into one thing so let's quickly recap all these three elements and so number one again was the important word layout this is where we really play around with just choosing the right important words and putting these in front and then all everything is straight all those small words in between are just small and adits the second one was the the shape layout where we decide on what shape you want to use we still add that shape with all the letters you can just do it with one style you can mix up the styles you can just try to make those bend those letters just to make it work but the shape will kind of make the whole composition pop kind of like filling out a whole box and then finally again boxes the boxes layout this is one here where you just basically fill it all out make sure that you've got like a lot of cool elements inside of it and just by breaking it down into just boxes it will make your life easier to come up with all these awesome things that you have to fill out so really easy way to create compositions now I don't want to leave you just off with those three elements because there's actually a bonus trick that I want to share with you so a bonus rate here is now I would usually talk about that in my workshops or I have done that in a previous online course but I'm actually going to show you two bonuses I'm not going to give you just one bonus I'm giving you two bonus tricks so one is the slanted composition is perfectly easy it doesn't work with every quote so don't quote me on this but here we go so this is the slanted line composition quote so first off you kind of like have a a circle of shape so your first word should start off with something a little bit like a you a short word like an N a or something like that and then you will add those slants to the letter through the word depending on how long it is and for example what do I have in my background be still and know that I am God so this is a great one so be still and know that I am God it's you can start off with B and then you start to fill it out and so here you that would go out a little bit more and no you kind of could do the same thing with the important word so again think of all these crossed elements so Ann would be kind of like as between words and no that's like here like that the end could be also small Here I am God so this is pretty much the first draft so this doesn't look like much but let's take it up like by actually just placing another piece of paper on top of that and I'll go over it again and just by tweaking some things that we're bothering me so here we go be still and No so here we could even go a little bit lower that stuff like that so you can see this is a very very easy trick to do that it looks it looks like it's magic but it's again just like you fill out those no space in between and all you try to do is to really place that into a beautiful shape so kind of like here we're combining a couple of different techniques so the important word laid out the slanted styles so this is really all that is to it is to put that into a slant knowing that any quote that starts off with a word that is short a short word and ends with a short word where you kind of like can combine all these words together there's a great quote to play around with so this is a absolute great trick so this is bonus number one and let's look at bonus number two bows number two is something is a product that I've created whoa we got a black outs now we're back in three two one there we are last one and this is one that I've kind of been using all the time is precomposed for it so this is the brilliance of actually practicing a lot so precompose grids is a bundle it's actually a couple of bundles that I sell on my store so if we add here like a screen size on a canvas and I go into my brushes here I have like here grids building then I have composition so here I have ton of pre-compose grit so it's a whole this and you can see grid thirty-eight grit thirty-nine so right here I can just pop that in and that is massive so let's get that right around let's see this is kind of like how I want that to be and so here we got like a whole grid already laid out for us so all we have to do in this case here is to fill it out so you get into your brushes like my favorite top five here's different cuts brush and I'll start by writing off like again we had be still so I can write in here be still and then I can actually fill this space out here use the eraser can write like end so I might have to actually make that a little bit larger or actually start a little bit further in no and then I can write in here that's I am god super-easy just filling it out and then you can still like use all these elements you can see I can switch it around like now if I feel like nah this is not it I can just go around select a different quote so let's hide this here go back to the composition play around see maybe there's this one here this one I'll actually like this one so I'll just try it around so here going back to my favorite brush and so I know that I can add like still in here have the be on top so this is kind of where I could add some grits again and and and this is where I get creative so I can just use the space here to for example go ahead and right then in here and so if I hide that whoops like that I can see you like alright these I have some problems owns maybe if I just actually if I just did that my problem would kind of like disappear and that way I weren't already really happy with the style I can just fill in those blanks find those kind of like that balance that nice one here get it all straight and it's all done so again super easy tricks if you can use any time again slanted version where you kind of like fill this out like this or using the pre-compose grids that you can get in my shop you can find the link in the description and get it there so those are tools that are at your disposal or even get the grid builder and play Tetris like I've also showed you in a different video before so how to use the grid builder what is left to say this is it this is about it so these are the three most important things that I need to know like whenever I have a bad day I'm trying to practice this a lot to just have some good helpful tips and tricks that I can always count on whenever I'm having a bad day so whenever I have this whenever but whenever I need to perform so sometimes I get asked like hey can you join me a quote really fast I'm like sure I can because I have learned these tricks to help me out always be ready to always have the tools that I need at hand to be able to do that and that comes from doing a lot of practice but also just having those good old elements right in your pocket like those tricks that you can just pull out whenever you need to so people will always be kind of like a maze like how do you do that so fast because you practice that and I hope that you've learned that from this here and that it's helpful for you so I hope that this can and will actually
