earlier was to the teachers and education assistant and the support staff here at tsp what many of you probably already know but may not know is all the hard work and dedication that each one of these professionals put in as Miss word said earlier some of you all trust us with your children um from all across State and this becomes their second home so we really appreciate that we honor that and we don't take that for granted next IID like to give a big shout out to miss word if you would [Applause] please for those of you who may not know Miss word Miss word operates in the spirit of Excellence we've had tons of conversations about this Awards day and I really criticize her a lot in gist trying to pick in her assist but miss word is that she's a hard worker she really put a lot of effort into this Awards program and I'm excited to see what it and finally to our students as an educator especially a leader in education during this time there's always a buzz in the air and that buzz is really a year of completion each one of our kids go through a year of completions when they go through K through 12 and this is their year of completion some of our students will go on to do bigger and better things postsecondary some of our students will come back and a lot of our students um that's here right now are going to come back next year what I challenge you as parents and Guardians is really to engage with us partner with us reach out to us build that relationship with us because without you is really impossible for us to give your kids the best that we can give them so this thing is really not about me let's get on with your award show so miss miss word I'll turn it back over to you [Applause] thank thank you thank you uh Mr Ray for those heartfelt words I really appreciate it um and I enjoy what I do next we will have the presentation of the G Gary laara Award presented by the one and only Mr Ralph Brewer [Music] [Music] [Music] hello most of you were clapping for me because you know that I'm the money [Applause] man today represented the Lions Club of Tennessee and it's my pleasure to present the Gary laara award let me tell before I present the award I want to tell you a little bit about Gary laa Gary laara was a an electrician at at the General Motors uh Corporation in uh Michigan and when he retired he and his wife Eileen moved to Crossfield Tennessee after they moved to Crossville they very quickly got involved in the Lions Club in crosswell and through their involvement with the Lions Club they became acquainted and familiarized with the Tennessee school for the BL L as you know the Lions Clubs are are extremely helpful to the students at the school for the blind so they became acquainted with us attended all kinds of award events especially the Lions day at tsv so when Gary was in the process of passing away his last wish was was that in L of flowers that funds be donated to the Tennessee school for the prim to benefit the students that was the kind of love that he had for you guys here at PSV so there was a considerable amount of money that was donated in Lou of flowers when Gary died because he was he was very much loved they notated that money to the Friends of Tennessee School for the Blind now as most of you know the friends of Tennessee School for the Blind uh folded its tent and donated all of its money to the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee and the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee donates funds each year on a Perpetual basis to the Tennessee School for the Blind to benefit the kids this award is one that's designated by the friends of TSB Legacy board to go to to memorialize and keep in me memory Gary L it is and the qualifications to receive this award is very simple qualifications are very simple I guess I should say I better watch myself I'm in school very simple the student recipient of this award is a graduating senior and the recipient must be going in the fall directly into a trade or attending a vocational program of some type and it's my pleasure now to present the lion Gary laa a ward for 19 for 2024 to Austin [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Rogers thank you so much and can we just have another round of applause for [Music] [Applause] Austin and now we will have presentation from the Lions Club the senior senior survival kits with Mr Bo and Dr Michelle [Music] corer quite a few years back um as the coordinator of the state Lions uh program for the School for the Blind the Lions TSB fund it is called I recommended to the Lions Clubs that a program be established to honor um the students who are graduating in order that they might be able to utilize the things that they've been taught here so I recommended that we start a a student survival kit and the purpose of this is to like I say to help those students and some of these things are very expensive that you're going to receive today each kit is worth about $150 so there's such things as small things but still are expensive if you go out to buy them if you can find them such things as U uh adhesive dots to put on microwave ovens or the stove or um washing machines or whatever there's a talking thermometer um such things that you would need if you when you're going out into the world to work or whatever you might want to do going to college or whatever so it is my pleasure my great pleasure to present the seniors at this time with the senior survival kits and uh I'm going to ask Dr Michelle if she will come up here and call the names but I'm because I know I couldn't do it so all right seniors I'm going to say your name and if you are able come on up to the stage and we're going to line up together and get a photo with Mr Brewer all real big there [Music] [Applause] thank you thank you so much thank you so much another round of applause all tight there's more money now we have Tennessee Council of the blonde BR Awards and this will be presented by Miss Johnson [Applause] hello everyone I'm Jean Johnson and I am a graduate of tsv [Applause] yay y'all can do the math and figure it out later but I graduated before oops before most of you were born yeah for real so I graduated in 1970 I know but when I was a little girl I learned Braille because I could not read print and Braille has served me very well throughout my life and for those of you who don't know you can't read print if you can learn and use braille you have a much better chance of being a successful adult in employment and the community and whatever you decide to do so if you're learning Braille stick with it and we have some people today who are learning Braille and are sticking with it and persevering and they were nominated for the Braille award which is given each year by the American Council of the blind the Tennessee Council of the Blind and I am the President of the Tennessee Council of the blind so this year we have three Awards and the first award is going to someone who is in fourth grade that would be gunar Lincoln [Applause] [Music] okay our next award and I just have to tell you a little story about this I was at the California School for the Blind in seventh grade for one semester that's a long story in itself but anyway I was there and I took Spanish and I made a d as in dog minus I did not do very well so I hope I pronounced this recipient's name correctly Louise [Music] Guama and by the way for those of you who are getting a braille award your name and the amount that you're getting is on the bottom of the envelope and then inside you will find a bra congratulatory card and your money in cash by way I know and also um some of you I didn't know you know if if you started learning BR later in life I wasn't sure if you knew all the contractions or not so I tried to make your card in keeping with what I could tell from the um you know the the thing that you submitted that was in Braille so anyway our last winner is Lando [Applause] Perry come on all so congratulations to all three of you keep it up keep up the great work know that bra will serve you well throughout your life [Applause] [Music] all right releas [Applause] [Applause] wow thank you so much for that Miss Jonathan now we will have our very own Miss Judy Denning presenting the alumni of Association awards Miss Beauty daning [Applause] [Music] all right an alumnus is a person who graduated from a school so I like Miss Johnson am an Alum of PSB I went to school here for 12 years long time ago if we are together the plural of alumnus is alumni and the Alumni Association includes all the people who have graduated from PSD over the years so that's a lot of people the first award that I'm going to give is in honor of Mr Clarence Wy which is called The Horizon award Clarence was a school made of mine he was very successful in school and then after he left school he learned to to tune pianos while he was here and he got a job at ELC tiller Piano Company tuning pianos he tuned all the pianos that they sold he was the one that went out in t for them he also sold a lot of them because he could sit down and play beautifully and that impressed people too later on he got into access technology and he kind of moved into that and was very successful in that area unfortunately his life was shortened by cancer after which his family wanted to establish an award to encourage Young Musicians who are showing promise so the music department chooses this award every year and this year we chose a freshman who's coming along beautifully on the trumpet in the band Miss Alexa franch come [Applause] [Music] [Applause] here keep up the good work Alexis and now I have six Awards to present which are named after teachers that were here back some years ago all of these teachers were totally blind but they taught us not only bra and English and how to use a library and how to play music more than that they taught us how to be successful as blind and partial sided people in this world because we watched them and we learned just by watching them that if they could do it we could do it so the first one that I'm going to present is the margale Braille award and this goes to Miss Lily fan [Applause] [Music] [Applause] they get an envelope each one of these six is getting $100 plus a beautiful class to hang [Applause] [Music] on the next award is the ese Davis Library award and it goes to l [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] okay we give an award every year to earn this W award you have to have the highest average in the English for your entire high school years so it takes four years of working hard to earn this award this year my microphone keeps slipping down this year there were two whose overall averages were so close that we said heck we're going to give both of them one we can't we can't do this they're just too close so would miss Carly Morris [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and Miss Brianna [Applause] [Music] WIS and the last award which is I tell you every year it's so precious to me and such an honor to be able to come as the secretary of the Alumni Association to present these Awards this one is in honor of my band director this band I was in for seven years until his retirement my freshman here miss Miranda v Graham [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and again this was so so close that we had to give to tener leader come on up here Andrew bush [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] money money [Music] all right thank you Miss Denny another round of applause for those pretty CLS [Music] hold next we will have the Mark Mantooth award this award was established to be given to a student with outstanding accomplishments and overcoming multiple challenges this award honors the TSB student Mark man who graduated in 1988 Mark overcame numerous challenges a plaque caned in the main entrance of the lobby and each recipient's name is engraved in a plaque and if the student can't come up the teachers more than welcome um to to come and receive their gift and so I'm going to have um tsp alumni Mr Harper to announce that name to us can you give Mr Harper an [Music] [Applause] Applause and it goes to ADR Perry [Music] [Applause] [Music] pleas give her a stand Ovation our has come a long way we love our [Applause] [Music] a all righty so I'm willing to announce the valid and so the valid yeah valid valid is Jordan Martin [Applause] [Music] and then our salute Victorian is Brianna Risman [Applause] [Music] [Applause] don't lose the money all right so those are our specialty Awards let's give an Applause all right are y'all ready roll now now we have our classroom Awards I have to hold the mic and so for our classroom in subject awards every teacher here at TSB nominated students all of our students are great so I want to explain we have most outstanding students selected for this award have exceeded expectations with hard work have good grades or the highest performance in their class or subject area most growth students who are granted this award have improved in skill or subject area their hard work show show growth and dedication and so I have my wonderful people here to love to meet my Runners and so for these Awards since there's so many of us you won't come up front but when you hear your name stand up and they will find you and we'll give you your certificate number one okay you got me all right so please everyone work together teachers uh help the students stand up so it's easy to locate them please feel feel free to cheer let's not get too excited so everyone's name can be heard um after each uh presenter is done we'll do a a big Applause okay all right so I will start off with orientation and Mobility the orientation in Mobility omm as we call it award goes to those that exhibit growth and understanding of basic concepts aligned with orientation and travel all right and they had all most outstanding so okay so the first will be Joel Tapia [Applause] [Music] basquet Samuel Jr prisman Bobby Brown Stephen Grayson Jordan Harley [Music] kenth Kenny white sa [Applause] Bonnie all right let's give it up for the OM andm crew and the instructors are and feel free to stand Miss crater Miss hedri Miss ler Miss LR and miss rich thank [Applause] you now we will have our presentation of elementary middle school high school by our dean of students Mr Aaron [Music] lockart so he told me I could announce this Mr lockart has been with us for a while let me tell about Mr lockart real fast he's hard work working he is flexible he is dependable and he's all about the kids sadly this is his last year with us he will retire can we please give a round of applause for [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Mr uh listen I'll tell you uh I very honored and pleased thank you for for that recognition and I'm going to get right to it because it's about the students right now and I want all of the family members who have been able to come out today take your time to watch your child get an award or the recognition and we want equally for those individuals who have been identified to know that the small monetary award is just a small token of what the community feels they want to share with our students so without further Ado I want to be able to go ahead talk about uh this particular category we're talking about the Elementary grades pre kindergarten through fifth and those teachers will be identified again we'll name the student you stand we'll have the run or bring your award to you but the enjoyment for you now is to know that your child is being recognized so this was a nomination process that was made by the teachers coordinated through Mrs word and we took extra special care to identify the best candidate to be selected so if you hear your name understand that a vetting process was conducted in order to identify you uh let me say this real quickly before I get into the names um so I came to TSB and I attended my first award show about nine years ago and I thought oh my goodness what a long award this is everybody's get their name called it made as much sense as a football bat but then I realized that what the kids are overcoming what they're achieving is just a mountain and so it is very welld deserved and I wish we could do more and I have come to understand that this was something that's necessary so without that uh further Ado let's go ahead and get right into the names all right so the most outstanding as m w said when students selected for this award have exceeded expectations with hard work and have good grades the highest performance in the class or subject area most growth is awarded to those students who are granted this award have improved in a skill or a subject area their hard work shows with growth and dedication so elementary prek through fifth for Miss V's class all subjects the most outstanding you have something to strive for for those who are identified we appreciate you and we recognize you so if you don't hear your name called understand hard work lasts throughout the year and you will be recognized so let's make sure parents students that you go for those goals and you get that recognition that is duly uh deserved so we want to make sure that you all understand we continue to
