horizon zero dawn is one hell of a game with a premise that i don't think any of us could have predicted adventuring through a post post-apocalypse trying to figure out who the hell your mother is and what's causing the hitherto docile robots to lash out even if you've been to the zenith of eloy's adventure there are still things you won't know about the game so courtesy of the art of horizon zero dawn and some interviews i've found some facts about the game that uncover what went on behind the scenes and what could have been there are mild spoilers in here if you haven't played the game so just be aware of that but on with the show here's 24 things you didn't know about horizon zero dawn even if you played it eloy is mature rational and has a fair few winters under her belt but to start with eloy was going to be much younger angie smith's executive producer at gorilla said that before aging her up eloy had a disney princess vibe as if she were little miss perfect which definitely did not fit the team's ideas of an independent determined alloy and it wouldn't actually make sense that someone that young could hunt robots and win the nora proving ritual so eloy had a handful of years added onto her age to make the story make more sense and also gave the writing team the ability to give her better narrative opportunities as with ayloy being a young adult she can handle herself out there in the wilderness a lot of the nora designs and motifs for clothing and decorative carving are based off of the all mother a deity who the nora worship these patterns mirror a womb to reflect the nora tribe's matriarchal nature and the life they believe the all mother bestows upon the world osseram a bulky inventive tinkerers in the world of horizon zero dawn who you'd definitely want by your side in a fight long before they became fighters however the osseram were mainly blacksmiths who didn't have the time to make specialized armor for their battles look at their war outfits and you'll see that they wear armored smocks these smogs started off as work robes that they'd wear for blacksmithing the metal harvested from robots and then gradually be reinforced for combat turning leather aprons into curases by studying them with metal wearing and reinforcing smelting masks to be used as helmets and bulking out blacksmithing gloves to turn them into gauntlets resourceful folks aren't they before it was decided that ailoy would be the special one with the ability to tame machines more on that later the banuk were going to have the ability to ride and domesticate machines to reflect their closer relationship with the robots and the reference they have for them once the corrupters have done their violent deeds their bullet casings are usually just left to sink into the earth but not if there are any eclipse around they use these bullet casings in their outfits to emulate these deadly pharaoh machines and the one silver lining is that at least they're cleaning up a bit of the devastation as they go along right speaking of the eclipse they use the power logo on their faces not just because they probably saw it somewhere on the massive machines they dug up from the earth to them it's a symbol of electronic resurrection and their arrogant assumption that they have power over these ancient machines and therefore in their eyes power over life and death you won't survive this of the most refreshing things about the machines in horizon zero dawn is that they look pretty natural with fluid movement and mannerisms and not being super blocky either to make sure the machines had this personality and didn't look like anything we have around today not even something from boston dynamics during the design process the artists avoided typical signs that humans had engineered these machines like using mathematical shapes and harsh angles instead they went for a more naturalistic depiction of robots one that didn't have to account for human hands putting them together to avoid this evidence of human design or whatever you want to call it guerilla's visual art and story teams went one step further to create the machines that became so iconic in horizon zero dawn's world after talking with a robotics professor about how these machines would be produced they found out that 3d printing them in the cauldrons would give them a combined structural strength and a nervous system considering these machines were designed in the far future it would make more sense that their production was more advanced so as a result the design team gave the machines functional skeletal systems the watch's design is based on a small bipedal dinosaur which makes it sound quite cute but i still resent that thing from when it alerts those goddamn robots to my location stretching high above you into the sky or crumbling into the ground by your feet the ruins of the old ones quite clearly fall into a couple of categories skyscrapers bunkers or statues yet you'll notice there's nothing like fast food restaurants burger stands or ticket booths for example eloy would have had no concept of these things so rather than trying to make these kind of ruins that probably wouldn't have survived centuries in the wilderness the team at gorilla used bigger more recognizable ruins rather than these specific types of buildings there's this one bit of concept art that shows a watcher following aloy through a ruin with what looks like a pack on its back meaning at one point it looks like eloy could have had a watcher companion the cauldrons creep me out they're so clearly not made for humans whatsoever that's because the cauldrons were cut out of rock by machines using specifically triangular lasers giving them their geometric look voyage down into the passages inside and you can see how the designers made it feel like a living thing as they wanted it to feel like an ant colony inside and with all those moving parts and patrolling shell walkers i definitely get that vibe i'll tuck that away horizon zero dawn was born when gorilla asked its staff for pitches for the next game once they decided that another kill zone wasn't on the cards mata easter young game director of horizon considered the horizon zero dawn pitch to be the most risky of all the concepts suggested right at the beginning once the horizon zero dawn pitch had been cemented a whole 20 different plots were created for horizon zero dawn each one had its own idea of what the game would be like including different player characters from the redhead seeker alloy and some even had players controlling multiple characters horizon zero dawn was so high on the priority list that gorilla cancelled another entire game to allow the entire team to focus on horizon zero dawn now that's commitment the audio engineers and musicians working on horizon zero dawn went in hard with the sounds that would accompany us through its world these experimental approaches included using bows on piano wire and playing cellos with the back of a bow might sound weird but the idea was that this novel approach would show how people from the far flung future might play instruments that we know well and then they folded that into the sound design of horizon zero dawn sony was originally reluctant about having ailoy as the main character as she was female it was only after there was focus testing to show the game could be marketable with the female lead that sony relented another kill zone wasn't on the cards for gorilla because the team realized that the first person shooter genre was a saturated market so they would be better off going for a role-playing game gorilla's original aim was to have a world that was big enough for you to explore complete the main quest and still only be at 35 percent completion eventually this focus on the size of the world was replaced by an emphasis on the density of aloys surroundings giving you more to explore rather than having large expanses relatively empty of content behind the scenes there was another game waiting in the wings dark science a brawler game about a mad scientist a prototype was made up of the gameplay just in case horizon zero dawn didn't go to plan and gorilla needed to make something that was a little bit less ambitious and closer to gorilla's existing skill set and technology it was funny incredibly different to horizon and had zombies nah give me horizon zero dawn any day aloy used to have a horse so you wouldn't have been riding around on a broad neck or a strider but an actual flesh and blood horse that went out the window when john gonzalez the narrative director said that eloy needed to be more special hence making her the only person apart from silence who could hack and ride machines when you look at a shell walker what do you think of for the audio team it was a cute grumpy crab guy who mumbles to himself and loves his container box a lot this kind of character-based audio design was key for creating the sounds the machines make according to sound designer pinar temers temez also said that when they were designing the sounds the watcher would make they wanted something more playful curious and yet dangerous and so went with a manic chihuahua if only i could throw a doggie treat the watcher's way and have it leave me the hell alone music supervisor lucas van toll wanted this game to literally sound like it was full of life so he found 750 birds from north america and their calls to fill horizon zero dawn with [Music] and that's 24 things you didn't know about horizon zero dawn even if you played it if you enjoyed the video thanks very much and don't forget to like and subscribe to eurogamer for more videos about video games as we have a new one out every single
