21 of the world's weirdest animals 21 jumbo octopus it's easy to see where these crazy sea creatures get their name their fins which help them swim at depths of at least 13,000 100 feet are shaped like the ears of a popular Disney character but they are definitely not elephant size this octopus only grows to be about eight inches long 20 block fish this fish rightfully dubbed one of the grossest fish in the world isn't native to the deep coastal waters of Australia and Tasmania the blob fish is made mostly out of flesh that has a lower density than water so it's able to float easily while it looks for prey for this reason the blob fish looks very different in water than it does out of it because its body has a low density it appears to sag when it is out of its habitat 19 red-lipped batfish everything about this fish is baffling scientists haven't learned why the bad fish looks like it put on way too much lipstick this morning but they have a theory that it has to do with finding of me other than its pouty lips the red lipped batfish is known for being a terrible swimmer that's right this fish doesn't really swim instead it walks clumsily on the bottom of the ocean with its fins that have semi adapted to the motion what makes this fish even weirder the underside of its body and it's confusing horn are covered in tiny hairs 18 feet big you'll likely never encounter a live sea pig because they inhabit the deepest part of the world's oceans they can be found as deep as 3.7 miles under the surface where they scavenge using legs that are repeatedly inflated and deflated to move around and although they may not look like it sea pigs are actually a type of sea cucumber 17 the purple frog their small faces and pointed snouts have given these amphibians a nickname of pig nose frog but they are ultimately recognizable due to their strange purple skin the purple frog lives most of its life underground where it uses its extra sensitive nose to hunt for termites they only come above ground for a couple of weeks a year in order to find a mate 16 goblin shark at about 13 feet long with transparent skin the goblin shark could be something from a nightmare they swim at depths of around 200 to 900 feet and are often described as a fossils with a lineage of over 125 million years old the goblin shark is also recognizable from its elongated snout fang-like teeth and their mouths which can move independently from the rest of its body 15 hairy frog this hairy frog has earned the name horror frog and for good reason other than its creepy hair which is actually skin filled with blood vessels the horror frog has another terrifying adaptation when the hairy frog feels threatened it purposefully breaks its own bones to create makeshift claws the broken bones are then pushed through the skin so razor-sharp bits of broken bones are visible 14 Mexican mole lizard these creatures are a disturbing cross between a pink earthworm and a lizard they are native to the Baja Peninsula and thankfully only grow to be about seven to nine inches long x-rays of these lizard worm snake creatures shows that they did indeed have back legs but those have since been lost to evolution the Mexican mole lizard is also capable of ditching its own tail in times of crisis but unlike other lizards it will never grow back 13 last frog looking at this frog from an aerial view you'd never know there was anything different about it but once you see the underside you'll know why we call this one the glass frog the abdominal skin is transparent making its heart intestinal track liver more completely visible 12 giant Kantor tortoise this is one of the largest species of tortoises in the world but it's definitely the weirdest - look at its flat body and small face gives it the appearance of a frog and instead of having a hard shell like most the Kantor or tortoise has made its own shell beneath its skin they grow up to six feet long although they may not look like it but Kantor is actually a formidable hunter it's striking speed is even faster than a king cobra 11 - fish this is not a trick the pack of fish is actually known for its unsettlingly human-like teeth they are related to the piranha but are much larger reaching lengths of around three and a half feet take a deep breath though how cool fish have only been falsely accused of attacking male swimmers and are known to feed mostly on nuts and vegetation can coconut crab if you were hoping that the photos of these crabs are misleading we're sorry to disappoint you the coconut crab is just as big and terrifying as it looks at around nine pounds and three feet long the coconut crab is a monster there are a type of hermit crab and as their name suggests eat coconuts they're incredibly powerful claws are capable of climbing trees and picking up more than 60 pounds nine the yeti crab the yeti crab is a relatively new discovery found in 2005 off the coast of Antarctica because of their harsh habitats the yeti crab has made some incredible adoptions they live near vents of warm water meaning their living space is extremely cramped with around 600 crabs per square meter they also are blind they actually have no eyes because they live at depths of 8500 feet 8 echidna the echidna is as amazing as it is weird echidnas are one of two species of mammals who are capable of laying eggs the other is a platypus with beady eyes short legs a long snout and even longer tongue and a body covered in spines the echidna might also take the cake for strangest mammals period 7 tufted deer these heartwarming little deer stand at only 20 inches off the ground and are named after the wild tuft of black hair on their forehead what makes this deer one of the strangest Bambi's around their terrifying vampire teeth the male deer grow intense canines with which they Maul one another during mating season six sea lamprey lampreys are 100% the stuff nightmares are made of these hideous creatures are more mouths than anything which they use to latch on to other fish once they think their rows of teeth into the body of another fish they feed off blood and bodily fluids these ghastly fish are native to the Atlantic Ocean but are beginning to creep into the Great Lakes as well five giant isopods this deep-sea creepy-crawly lives at depths of up to 7,000 feet beneath the surface at these depths the ocean is pitch black so they have developed a reflective retina much like cats that make their eyes appear to glow in the dark like giant squids their huge size is a part of a phenomenon called deep-sea gigantism which means creatures living at amazing depths tend to be much larger than their shallower cousins for high the sea creature which inhabits the Atlantic Ocean is still as disturbing as it was 300 million years ago hagfish or slime eels are living fossils that have changed very little over the millennia they're defining characteristic is the revolting ability to produce slime tons of it when they feel threatened their bodies secrete gallons of slime in minutes in an effort to get people to appreciate the hagfish there is a national holiday named after them in October 3 Pangolin these endangered creatures look like a cross between a dragon and an anteater pangolins are covered in tough armor made of fig keratin scales when they feel threatened they roll into a tight ball making themselves impervious to harm pangolins can grow to be about 40 inches long but in some cases their tongue is actually longer than their entire body these incredible mammals have also made a habit of carrying their newborn babies on their tail to keep them close to pink fairy armadillo this could very well be the cutest animal to make it on our list of all the specimens of armadillos this one is the smallest living up to its name pink fairy armadillos can grow to be about 5 inches long and weigh less than a pound unlike other armadillos the pink fairy doesn't use its shell as armor it's pastel pink covering sits on top of its fluffy white fur and is a way to keep the armadillo cool in the summers and warm in the winters one duck-billed platypus if the duck-billed platypus hadn't earned the popular reputation of being the weirdest living thing on earth we'd probably think it was a joke in fact when the platypus was discovered in the 1700s British scientists were convinced it was a prank being played by George Shaw and can you blame them the duck-billed platypus is a wild mixture of a little bit of everything a duckbill a beaver body webbed feet poisonous claws and to top it all off the thing lays eggs descriptions of this animal reads like a sideshow attraction
