now I've been noticing a very disturbing Trend here in 2024 Rising prices of laptops yes I'm seeing about a 25 to 30% increase year-over-year case in point I did a rant in my review of the MacBook Air with the M3 with its price gouging scheme that Apple's employed there if you didn't see that video check out the link in the description below of course we also talked about the Dell XPS line being very expensive here those laptops have just got a nice price reduction so that's a good hope here as far as getting those laptops within reasonable range but I have a laptop I'm about to show you that is a real ray of light in this sea of very expensive laptops and that is the Lenovo slim 7 i14 or otherwise known as the yoga slim 7 for 2024 and that's outside the United States of course or outside North America they are using the yoga moniker I know it's very confusing but this Slim 7i brings a lot to the table an OED display excellent battery life an all metal design very premium materials here and good performance to top it all off so we're going to get into it today why I think this might be the best bang for the buck laptop so far in 20124 hey everybody it's Andrew and this is my review of the Lenovo slim 7 i14 brand new for 2024 coming up now before we get to the unit itself I just want to let everyone know in the interest of transparency and full disclosure I'm not being paid by Lenovo I'm not being sponsored by Lenovo all the opinions you're about to hear are my own Lenovo is not getting copy approval that means they're seeing this video for the first time just like you now this unit is on loan from Lenovo and once this review is done I'll be sending it back now the slim 7 i14 starts at 9369 and price is tested here today pretty much fully loaded here $1,056 60 and for those interested I will leave a link in the description below for more information and where you can buy one and I think considering you're getting 32 GB of RAM you're getting a terabyte of storage an OLED display it's a pretty good price especially when we're seeing very high prices overall here in 2024 and with that out of the way let's get this out of the box documentation here warranty information yadada yada yada let's check out the uh power adapter here wow pretty compact wow I wasn't expecting that one and it's a 65 Watts so 65 watts and this is probably smaller than I remember from Lenovo I think this might be the smallest I've seen so far this plugs in so there's no power cord so you just get this cord let's hopefully this is long enough but pretty minimal in terms of travel weight we'll get get a measurement of the weight in a moment of course let's keep that to the side there and then of course the unit itself the Luna gray so this is the Luna gray I kind of like it you know what it's understated it's not going to collect a lot of fingerprints pretty nice it feels pretty nice and substantial so far I see hardly any screen Flex or any give on the lid here and that to me is a big wins already right off the bat pretty thin for a nice 14-in laptop you can get a look over the side there and we'll look at the ports in a moment but very very well made so far the useless test of the day the one finger test right yeah you can open it with one finger and there it is wow that looks good smile shaped Keys we know and love from Lenovo you can go back as far as you see here and and pretty nice looking so far so we got two speaker grills there it looks like we have a nice keyboard let's give a listen to the keyboard so with the unit alone you're looking at 1. 1442 kg and that is 3 lb 2.8 Oz 1. 617 kg not too bad that's a pretty nice travel weight and again that would be 3 lb 9 oz so not too bad you throw it in your bag you got something pretty nice to take with you on the go okay let's check out the ports on the left side is an HDMI 2.1 Port two USB type-c Thunderbolt four ports that are full function supporting data charge and display out now moving over to the right side is the kill switch for the webcam a power button a 3.5 mm microphone headphone combo Jack and a USB type a 3.2 gen 1 Port notably missing there is no SD card reader and I would like those two USB type-c Thunderbolt full ports split up one on each side rather than them being on the same side of each other now when it comes to the internals of this laptop you'll notice that the ram is soldered into the motherboard it's not upgradable by the user now the good news is it's running at that fast 74 6700 mahz which is only capable of running at that speed if it is soldered in so that is the Silver Lining but not having it upgradeable by the user is a downside in my book but again you do get that faster Ram now the good news is at this price point you are getting 32 GB of RAM which is a pretty good deal in my opinion especially when you look at others in this category the MacBook Air for instance really skimps and really charges high prices for upgrading the RAM and I get into Apple's price gouging scheme in my MacBook Air M3 review that I just did I'll leave a link for those that didn't see it in the description below and unlike that MacBook Air this does have upgradable storage it does have a smaller SSD as far as physical size here I think it's 2230 correct me if I'm wrong but it is a 1 tbyte SSD that is included at this price point and as you can see certainly fast enough reads and writes for what you need this laptop to do and there's also room to put a bigger SSD a 2280 I believe if you need to do that if there is room there on the motherboard and when it comes to the wireless you're looking at a Wi-Fi 6C Bluetooth 5.3 combo card that is slotted in so if you need to change it out down the road say go to something more future proof a Wi-Fi 7 card that is certainly an option but as far as the wireless is concerned here both the Wi-Fi and the Bluetooth have been both working flawlessly no issues with either one now when it comes to the keyboard I'm actually a big fan of it it has those very familiar smile shaped Keys we know from Lenova yoga and slim line there's the co-pilot key now present on here again with all these meteor Lake laptops a is going to be a big feature here 2024 and that's why you see that button there and it does exactly what you'd expect it brings up the co-pilot and all that stuff and as far as typing out long documents emails and the like the tactility the key travel the overall feedback was very good very comfortable for typing out long documents and all that stuff it all worked very well there is a backlight on it that worked well as far as getting work done in a dark room and a dimly lit environment now the touchpad I thought was very good as well I thought the responsiveness was very good as far as scrolling doing all the gestures the actual size of it is very good really smooth scrolling on it and all that stuff everything worked very well I have no complaints on that it is not a haptic touchpad and at this price point I'm not expecting it to be but for a mechanical regular touchpad it certainly got the job done now on paper I was a little bit disappointed when I first saw the specs when this was announced that this had only a full HD Plus resolution 1920 by 1200 but having used this OLED display with this full HD Plus resolution and the 60 it's made some sense here especially at this price point at around $1,000 or less and what we're seeing here is a 60 HZ display so what does that mean you're going to do better on battery life but it won't be quite as smooth or as fluid as something with say 120 HZ or even 90 Herz but having the 60 HZ means you will get better battery life now as far as the numbers here excellent excellent coverage of the color gamut this is a very color accurate display so if you're going to do content creation on here in Lightroom Photoshop video editing and da Vinci resolve premere Pro color grading this is certainly a very capable panel here there is no doubt about it you get the super deep blacks the very vibrant colors the really high contrast all the Hallmarks of an OLED display are here and it also has a touch layer meaning you can use pinch to zoom and navigate the OS with your finger and that worked extremely well now Lenovo claims 400 nits of screen brightness I actually measured 430 nits which was above the claim brightness here which is even better and it is a glossy display so depending on your Li conditions you will notice some glare and reflection it wasn't too bad but it is something you will have to be aware of and it also is a Dolby Vision display so watching High dynamic range content on this was very good in Netflix Amazon YouTube and watching movies in General on this panel was very good so this is the 1080p camera here on the Lenovo slim 7i 14 here for 2024 1080p there this is an IR camera so that means you can log in with face recognition with Windows 11 and there is a kill switch if you need more security and privacy that's located on the right side of the unit what do you think about the video quality what do you think about the audio quality let me know in the comment section below now let's compare performance here and when we're looking at something like the MacBook Air a mid-ranger like this one we're looking at better single core performance on the MacBook Air which is not a surprise that's been the mo with the M series of chips from Apple multicore I would say is about even and then when it comes to the open CL slightly better on the slim 7i which of course is running the Intel arc graphics which are a nice Improvement here in 2024 certainly over the Intel Iris XE we saw in years past now of course take into consideration the metal score 47,000 on the Apple that of course is optimized for Mac OS and Mac hardware so that is not a surprise now when it comes to the cinebench 2024 comparing these two obviously the MacBook Air has better single core performance which is going to be better for everyday task like Microsoft Office email web browsing which by the way was perfectly fine on this laptop but you're going to see better multicore performance here on the slim 7i and you're doing things like multi-threaded performance and video editing and higher end tasks and so forth it will be better on this slim 7i now of course when we're looking at other meteor Lake laptops I looked at the galaxy book 4 Pro the 14-in clam shell here running the same chipset obviously better performance on the Lenovo Slim 7i better multi-core performance better single core so that is not a surprise I was a little disappointed in the Samsung Galaxy book 4 Pro overall when you compare to other meteor Lake laptops this certainly was a better performer to Me overall and we're seeing a pretty much similar result in the geek Ben 6 pretty much similar single and multi-core performance here similar open CL score which test the GPU and again Intel arc graphics are a big step up over the iris XE so not a surprise there I think My overall takeaway in general with these meteor Lake laptops is going to be less single core and slightly less multi-core performance than last year which is a bit disappointing when you think about it although we are seeing some benefits in other areas like efficiency and battery life that we'll get into in a little bit now to test the video editing capabilities on the slim 7i I ran the pugin bench Da Vinci resolve Benchmark and it got an overall score of 657 which was a better score than the book 4 Pro 14 that I looked at better 4K media score better GPU effect score and a better fusion score and a better overall video editing laptop in my opinion and the numbers don't lie here and again I would always choose something with a discret GPU if you had a choice but this does have some pretty impressive integrated Graphics the Intel arc graphics are very good here for 2024 now I wouldn't characterize this as a gaming laptop per se of course but you can lower some of the settings and get some very playable frame rates as evidence by these numbers here in certain games you can get playable frame rates and it certainly will be very doable here now you also have two Thunderbolt full ports if you want to add an external GPU that is certainly an option here with this slim 7i and when I ran the time spy stress test to see if this will thermal throttle under heavy load it got a score of 96.3% just shy of the 97% passing score so that means it detected very little if any thermal throttling and that's good now as far as the surface temperatures are concerned under load it can reach as high as 37 38° Celsius above the keyboard below the display where you see that heat vent over there that is certainly okay because it's out of the way where you place your fingers where you place your fingers on the keyboard never getting overly hot now it can heat up on the underside noticing it gets around 49 almost 50° Celsius on the bottom there which is a little bit higher than I'd like on it so that's something to be aware of and when it comes to Fan noise you will have to contend with it when you put it under maximum load it can reach as high as 47 48 DB which is certainly noticeable now if you put it in the balance mode doing everyday tasks the fan noise was not much of an issue and the area that impressed me a lot here is going to be battery life a 65w hour battery here on this unit getting nearly 10 hours and 20 minutes on the PC Mark 10 modern office test nearly 13 hours on video playback which are very good numbers here in 2024 remember this is a full HD Plus display it is OLED which tends to use a little bit more power but not having the high refresh rate not having the high res display here means you're going to save a little bit on battery life and that is a silver lining and not having a higher res display and remember the display here is excellent I really am impressed with it overall the slim 7i which you see here on the left is going to be compared to the MacBook Pro on the right that's the 14in that has six speakers that has DOL Atmos this has quad speakers Dolby Atmos I think it's 8 watts of total output should be pretty good I think the sound overall will be pretty good on it I don't think it's going to be quite as good as the MacBook Pro which I think is in a league of its own personally think it's the best in the business but they do a good job here in terms of this slim 7i especially for the price point so without further Ado let's listen to them and you tell me what you think in the comment section below now let's give them a listen [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] he [Music] [Music] okay let's bring it all home what do I think about the Lenovo slim 7 i14 here for 2024 I like the overall value that this brings to the table at a little bit over $1,000 you're getting 32 GB of RAM you're getting a terabyte of storage you're getting an old LED display and a very good build with an excellent keyboard and touchpad what's there not to like at that price point a lot of value here so that I think is what they're bringing to the table now would I have lik to seen a higher res display with a higher refresh rate yeah but I think that would have added another couple $100 at least to the price point and that is something we don't like to see here in 2024 when laptops are expensive enough here and check out my review of the MacBook Air for the case in point so I think for about $11,000 or so you're getting a really good laptop here and not only you're getting a really nice laptop with good build great storage great options when it comes to the memory but you're also getting very good or even excellent battery life on top of that so I think it's a complete package a lot of bang for the buck and I highly recommend the lenov slim7 i14 here for 2024 it's a good one so please hit the like button please
