are live for my annual goal setting class I am so happy to have you here I I can't believe it this is my eighth year doing this class I have to know have you been with me for eight years has anyone been with me for the whole eight years is this your second year third year pop into chat tell me hello tell me where you're from and also if you've been with me before and if this is your first time tell me this is my first time because boy do we have a lot the most amazing thing about doing this class for eight years is I have been able to hone the curriculum I've been able to work on and perfect the framework you're about to learn because I have watched thousands of students use exactly what I'm going to teach you to achieve their life goals so if that's been you say hi in chat oh my go oh okay yes third year first year welcome Leo welcome Leah I love it we have people from all over the world we have someone from l IA and Columbus and Canada Las Vegas oh my goodness I love it okay they're coming in fast if I miss you I still want to say hello so pop in a chat say hello I realize I should probably introduce myself so for those of you who don't know me my name is Vanessa van Edwards and I'm the bestselling author of captivate let's see I have these on anyone read Captivate Captivate my first book oh I was so little when I wrote that book and cu's my more recent book so I'm the bestselling author of those books I'm also the founder of Science of people our mission at science people is to teach you advanced communication skills people skills to level up your relationships to level up your success and to achieve your goals faster I think that there is a secret science to communication I'm a recovering awkward person so I had to learn everything the hard way so that you could learn it the easy way okay so come on say hi I actually have a warm-up today I want everyone to do this warm-up with with me because I have there's a little bit of science I want you to trust me there's some science behind this warmup are you ready we're going to just Dive Right In okay so pop in chat or if you want to get out of pen and paper we will be doing a lot of exercises in this class so if you want to get a pen and paper will'll be very helpful here is our first exercise did do you like this word where you're like H I wonder what why does she have a little whiteboard here's our Icebreaker right now I want you to think about what was your biggest win this year in 2023 what was your biggest win put it in chat share it loud and proud I want see it there is a reason I'm having this Icebreaker so even if you don't share I just want you to think to yourself where did I win what did I win how did I win what was your biggest win this year what made you feel capable accomplished powerful what are you most proud of if I were to meet you in person and we were to be sharing a taco together what would we be celebrating together okay I want to hear them let's see let's see okay oops I just lost my chat there it went okay let's see oh traveling the world for a full year Leon that's amazing w wow I lost 75 pounds cat gained more confidence whoa CT presented to a huge new audience completed a Spartan Race I heard those are incredibly intense congrats congrats oh my gosh these are so Good by the way just look at some of these amazing and different wins in chat so I want you to keep putting those in there keep looking at them there is a secret science reason why I'm having you put in those wins while you put in your winds I want to talk about the structure for today so we are going to teach first I want to teach you the full framework the full curriculum today first that is why you're here so we're going to do that then at the end I know some of you are just here to hear the opening of people school and our two big new announcements but I'm going to do that at the end I really want to teach you my entire goal framework first to make sure you know if you want to do people school if it's the right fit for you and for the first time ever we are announcing and launching Community for people school students you can actually meet other people school students build your network and live coaching calls every single week this year so we have some those announcements I'm going talk about them at the very end and then at the very end I will also take questions so if you have questions for me while I'm teaching save them I'll probably answer some of them and if I haven't answered them Scott's going to come on my partner and we're going to take questions at the very end so that's a structure and that means we get to dive in first here we go okay here's where I want to ground us today is about three big Ideas the first thing I want to do for you is I want to teach you Clarity I want you to get clarity on what you want and how to get it second once you know what you want you have to have the confidence to be able to ask for it so I want you to know what you want and how you're going to get it have the confidence to be able to ask for it and to gain respect when you ask for it and lastly I want you to take control I want you to take control of your potential your path and your goals I'm just cu curious which of these three is the most important for you so as I went through these three which one are you like oh man Vanessa I need that one the most do you need Clarity in what you want and how to get it do you need confidence more in asking for what you want and being respected when you ask for it or lastly do you need control do you need to take control of your time take control of your potential stop feeling like you're mandering and actually get on a path to your goals I'm so so here oh okay confidence is a huge one wow I'm seeing a lot of confidence Clarity yes so confidence and Clarity seems to be the winning don't worry we're going to talk about all three I'm not going to make you choose just one for all of them I just think it's good to be centered on the one that you need the most because we're going to be diving into all three okay so we're talking about Clarity confidence in control and here is the big idea from Henry Ford whether you think you can or you think you can't you're right when I talk about confidence Clarity and control do you think that sounds possible for you before I even give you the Frameworks and the tactics if you think you can't it will be much harder if you think you can it will be so much easier so right now I want you to believe me I want you to trust me that you can do this I know this framework works I've been teaching it for eight years I've watched thousands of students go through it in fact we've seen people who've been with me every year in this chat I know you can do it we just have to have the belief in ourselves okay that was my pep talk do you like the pep talk okay so let's go back to our Icebreaker so I started off by asking you for your biggest win but I actually want you to do three yes three so biggest medium smallest what were your three biggest wins this year so the reason I'm asking for three is because we often discount the little wins right like I think it's really important to think about the little wins the time wins the relationship wins the connection wins did you stand up for yourself did you say no to a toxic person did you set a boundary did you go to the gym more often often than you wanted don't just celebrate the big wins I also want you to celebrate the micro wins so right now in chat put your three biggest wins or if you can take out a pen and paper I want you to write down those three wins I love it someone said save me I'm Gonna Save you I got this okay so what were your three biggest wins there is a reason I am guiding you through these wins there is a reason why I'm having you think about your wins here is some incredible mind-blowing science so this comes out of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology this changed the way that I think about my own wins here's what they did so researchers brought participants into their lab and they split them up into two different groups the first group was given a set of normal directions and then given an intelligence test so very simply please take the following intelligence test answer the questions to the best of your ability very standard directions the second group had the same intelligence test the same set of directions but they sprinkled in achievement oriented words so achievement oriented words are words like win they're words like achieve succeed Master just a couple of them three or four words they wanted to know if you mention just a couple of these achievement oriented words does it change people's behavior and here's what they found which is incredible people who had just a few achievement oriented words performed better on the task they actually utilized more of their intelligence they thought more clearly they thought in a more strategic way just by reading those words but more importantly the second one the achievement words double the participants desire and motivation to work on that task why this is so critically important is because when we think about our goals we often have the Big Goal but we lack motivation to work on it right we think I really want to achieve that thing or do that thing or get that thing but it is so hard to get the energy the motivation to be able to do it and here's what's key your mindset can actually give you or gift you that motivation what this research found which is why it totally changed the way I think about my own success is that if we just think about winning or achievement if you go back and rewatch just that little pep talk part of this webinar it's going to be up all year for free it's going to double your desire to keep working when you think about your wins and you ground yourself in your wins from last year it helps you get more wins for next year oops and here's the other thing that I want to I'm lost my bullet the other thing I want to mention is just reading a word like win changes our chemistry to behave more like a winner and this fits in with some of the biggest winners Bill Walsh I love this quote from Bill Walsh Champions behave like Champions before they're Champions so even if you didn't have wins next year if we harness this winning mindset and get set ourselves up that winning standard helps us perform like winners and if this is you if you didn't have three wins if you're like Vanessa I really am trying but I did not have three wins I am with you I get it if you do not have three wins it is okay next year is going to be different the reason you're here there is a reason you're here and it means I want you to have three resounding wins so this time next year set the date for next year you're going to come to this webinar and be like Vanessa here are my three wins because we're going to do it differently this year so if you didn't have them next year if you didn't have them last year don't worry we will have them next year and here's the good thing if you didn't have three big wins you can use that as fuel that desire for change that desire to have bigger wins to have Ambitions that is fuel that is most motivation to make changes and if you're on the other side if you're disappointed in yourself if you're angry you didn't hit your winds if you're feeling regret use that as fuel we can use both negative and positive emotions to propel ourselves forward and to behavior change so I want you to take all those feelings that you had when I said what were your biggest wins if it was good if you want more of them fuel if it was bad and you were like H I wish I regret yes that is fuel too so here's what we do every year in our seminars I think it's really important to ground ourselves in the past before we can move forward to the present if you've had that problem where you've made the same goals every year and not achieved them this is why that happens if we don't review what's happened in the past it's very hard to make changes for the future so here's what I want you to do first is what was your word or phrase for 2023 now what I want you to think about here is when you look back at 2023 what do you want to remember what did you learn this year what were you grateful for this year when you look back in this year how would you crystallize this year in a word or phrase right we're taking in all of the things we're going to break this down into smaller steps in a second but first just the big one so what was your word I'm just curious o someone said ignite barah said growth barah is a people school student hi barah hi um Jolene said be the sunshine wow it's beautiful I need I need more folks like you I want some more be the sunshines I Love It O my 22 word was was agree move navigating change slowly da I like that slowly okay so I love these if you looking for ideas if you're like I don't know use the chat these ideas are fantastic alignment connection o someone said and I missed it elegant Excellence o I love the alliteration e and e okay so we're thinking about our word to crystallize what we want to do for next year so just a little background is my word was aggressively my phrase was aggressively helpful so when I think about my 2023 and I'm sharing this to hopefully inspire you for years and give you also a little perspective on sort of what we we've been doing the last year when I thought about 2023 I was like my phrase is aggressively helpful and that was certainly the case this year all of my goals this past year were about that so one of my big wins my biggest win was I had my second baby girl in fact this time last year I was super super super pregnant so if you watched was anyone here with me last year and I was like I we were so scared last year my team and I we were like what will we do if you give birth before the webinar I was like I'll do the webinar from the hospital I don't even care I'll still do it right so I had my second baby girl oh Claire she's here that was my biggest win by far and when I was thinking about okay I'm going to go into this year it was a year of service for me right like I wanted to be of service to both my daughters as well as my students I just felt like it was a big service here the other thing that we committed to doing my team and I is we wanted to blow away the free content we wanted to be posting free content every single day so we had over a hundred free articles we posted on the blog that's thousands and thousands of words we posted we did over 40 free videos on YouTube and social media I wrote and I personally write and painstakingly edit all of our newsletters our weekly newsletters hopefully you're on it I wrote 52 newsletters this year every single one has a helpful tip and we hit 56 million views on YouTube so for me delivering free content so that whenever you see my name in your inbox you're feeling helped you're feeling supported you're feeling entertained that whenever you see my name or my face pop up in your feed you're feeling uh supported helped brightened challenged and hopefully that is aggressively helpful so that that was a big win for me as I was so happy that we were able to put out so much and then also big win for me I was super excited Q's got picked up in 12 languages so it is getting all over the world to everyone even those uh folks who are in far-reaching places if I can't speak the language they get to enjoy it and one of the interesting wins a side little win that we had was that one request we kept getting was I want to activate everything that I'm learning and so we built our first first AI tool I'm actually going to do a little tour of this at the end so we built our first AI tool it's called Charisma coach we just rolled out to people people school students we're going to put out in the public soon where you can paste in any text any presentation any script any chat any email it will give you a Charisma score and then rewrite it for you to be more charismatic that was a huge win so those were my three wins what were yours I want to hear them okay now we're going to drill down so we thought about our big word I want to now drill down into each area so we are going to go through this is my goal wheel if you want to grab it you can grab it for free it's science.com handout you also can just draw this on a piece of paper if you want to go old school so I actually I print mine out these are all of my goal wheels from previous years um I save them and I look back at them every year and I actually am going to do 2023 with you so I'm going to do mine with you um in a few minutes so here's what you're going to do you're going to either draw this or print this out or just um download the hand out we are going to fill in or rate the different aspects and areas of your life it's very important to get very specific about what didn't work so we can figure out what will work so here's how this works so ones means you were very unsatisfied with that part of your life five means you were very happy very satisfied the way this looks is a very quick visual snapshot of good years and bad years the smaller your circle the more we have to work on the bigger your circle the more success the more happiness the Fuller you feel so it's a very like quick snapshot so like when I look back I can see very quickly good years and bad years like my fullest circles were actually 2022 and 2021 those are my fullest circles it's just a really helpful way to visualize what's happening so I want you to fill those out so you can see this is how it would end up looking right when you fill them out and let's go through each of the areas really quickly so I like to start with business um so business how did you feel about your work career or business effectiveness and success were you very satisfied a five were you unsatisfied a one friends do you feel supported do you feel like the people in your life who you spend your free time with are making you better are contributing to your goals that you contribute to their goals how's your social life how's your support system family how are your personal relationships your partner your spouse if you have kids your parents your siblings do you feel close with those folks do you have the right boundaries with those folks depending on how you feel with family personal passions this is a really important one I think people skip it do you have personal passion projects Hobbies or fun activities that fulfill you do you know how to recharge or reset so I have found that in my lowest years for personal passions when I'm at a one or two it's like I don't know how to refuel myself so do you know what refuels you do know what your personal passions are five for very satisfied one for not satisfied spiritual you can answer this as you wish so it could be your faith but it also could be mental health it could be stress levels it could be a personal Journey or Quest that you're on it could be your mindset think when I asked you at the very beginning whether you think you can or you think you can't you're right if you felt like I can you're like yes Vanessa I can you can give yourself a pretty high number for this one if you were like I don't know if I can I I think I can't then that would be a lower mindset so that's that's how how I like to think about that mindset spiritual one and lastly health is last I think that people often pick their health goals first and I love a health goal but I want us to do the other ones first so Health are you happy with your physical health and wellness so give those some numbers okay let's go into the steps we just did our annual review I want you to take all of that as fuel if you are happy let it Propel you if you are unhappy let it drive you let it push you because step number one this year and this year it's a little bit different we need to remove toxic people this is a big question we're going to be talking about in this training are the people in your life helping your goals or hurting your goals I'm get I'm going go full screen for this one are the people in your life helping your goals or hurting your goals when you think about The Five People You spend the most time with are they supporting you or not this is critically important because the biggest mistake mistake we make when we're thinking about goals is we think of them alone we think about ourself working by ourselves but goals are often tied to the people we're with if our partner is not supportive of our goals it is going to be incredibly hard no matter how hard you work for you achieve your goal if you have friends that are supportive of your goal you are more likely to achieve that goal if you are with other growth-minded individuals you are more likely to achieve your goal and so your goal is not just about you it's also about the people in your life and so that's why this year I'm starting with clearing the deck making room for the good and we're going to do a little exercise so I sneak peak this is that the way you say that sneak sneak peak showed it on our little landing page so I want to get out a pen and paper we are going to do a little exercise and this is by the way why I have this fancy whiteboard so get out a pen and paper please okay by the way did you see why I had had win up for like the first 15 20 minutes every time you read the word it was like getting your mindset to win okay all right let's do that was like an arm workor out a little bit that was like very hard to erase that was very hard to erase okay here we go here's what I want you to do this is called your people workflow we do this in-depth in people school but I want to do it with you right now very quickly so I want you to draw two circles first a small circle that was I'm happy with that Circle I was like very worried that I was going to like draw it terribly but I'm pretty pleased with that okay so here is your little circle in your little circle I want you to put your inner circle this is probably one to three people who know you incredibly well these are the people who know your hopes your dreams your worries your goals if you were to ask them what do you think my 2023 win was they would probably be able to tell you now if you don't think anyone can answer that question I want you to leave that Circle empty okay it's a really good little visual to see where you're at next one oh by the way don't worry I'm very happy with that Circle pretty good pretty good um the if you're I'm doing all these exercises very fast because we have a lot of folks who are busy doing things you can always re-watch this webinar we're going to post it so you can pause it replay it and do these more but I'm going through them fast so you can see them so Inner Circle the people who know your goals who could tell you or guess what your 2023 win was these people who know you best you depend on they're also the people you typically spend the most time with in this circle the middle circle I want you to put all the people who you spend time with who touch your to-do list who touch your calendar on a weekly basis this might not necessarily be people you interact with most it could be people you think about most like for example I was working with a student the other day who said you know I don't interact with my boss and on a weekly basis but I think about my boss on a daily basis because she's constantly you know I'm thinking about her for my tasks and for what I do great you can put that person in that middle circle on the outer edges so outside of your circles I want you to put the people who you think about but you wish you were closer to people who are in your periphery who you occasionally see occasionally think about on in total there should be maybe 10 to 20 people for my introverts you might have just five people cool that's great for my extroverts no more than 30 people okay my extroverts spend like 30 minutes on this exercise and my introverts are like done after finish is that true way I'm curious in chat are my extroverts like feverishly adding every person they've ever met right and my introverts are like did it done Vanessa ready for the next one okay okay so as you put those people right so you're going to put your people in you're going to put your people in if you really want to get fancy with it you can make people closer to the middle the people you're more intimate with people you're further away with more farther away okay this is part one part two this is actually the more important part of the exercise if you have someone you want to be closer to I want you to draw an in Arrow right so if there's a colleague or a friend where you're like I really want them in my inner circle I want them to know my biggest wins I want them to know my struggles I want you to draw an in Arrow for them if they're are people who are not supporting your goals they get an out Arrow so if there is someone in your inner circle where you're like I don't think they support me or I feel like I I don't feel like my full self with them they get an out Circle this is a really clear way we're about to break this down into actual specific goals to see who needs to come in and who needs to go out they're going to be a few people the last part of this exercise is there's going to be a few people where you're not sure I call those ambivalent relation relationships ambivalence is actually one of the toughest things in relationships ambivalent relationships drain us faster than toxic relationships if you're looking at someone and you're like I'm not sure if they support me I'm not sure if I feel good with them or if you've ever been with someone you're like are they being mean is that passive aggressive I want you to put a question mark by them your mission in the next seven days is to figure out if they're an in or an out so if you have a question mark person I need you to get them out of ambivalence and figure out if they're an in or an out okay so do this exercise if you have to pause this webinar I want you to pause it or finish doing it later okay let's go back into our slide to see what the next step is so here's why this is so critically important psychologist Dr Helen Hendrickson has done research and has found that our friends our peers people in our life our family members our colleagues they are contagious behaviorally so both healthy and unhealthy behaviors are contagious this means that if you want to be healthier more successful learn more if you are not hanging out with people who also have those goals who also support those goals you're going to have a harder time achieving them people who have toxic traits or bad behavior or who don't love themselves they are going to make it harder for you to achieve your goal because those behaviors are contagious I thought this was really a very interesting quote by Wade Mullen when someone says after all all I've done for you they are revealing that what they did for you was not for you at all but for their own need to control you their generosity was a contract with hidden terms do you have hidden contracts are there people in your life who you feel you have hidden contracts with where you either have to be healthy with them or unhealthy with them or they have uh written rules for how they want to interact where you have trouble setting up boundaries or they support you and the unwritten rules that you're successful together this exercise if you can if you really want to get deeper with it write down some of those written rules next to those people write down what are the rules of engagement you have with those people what are the contracts you have with them for example do you have someone where when you're with them you always have to fake being happy you always have to pretend that everything's good and everything's okay so when you leave you're exhausted because it feels inauthentic and not real do you have someone who levels you up who asks about learning who asks about growth who supports you who challenges you who pushes you in a good way that is also a hidden contract let's bring them to light to make sure they are not working against you next year I want you to achieve your goals so badly this year I want to make sure there isn't anyone here that is secretly taking away from those goals that's making it harder for you to achieve them okay so if our behaviors are contagious who are you hanging out with who can contribute to good behaviors versus bad behaviors here's the mindset we talked about control you are the CEO of your life hire fire and promote accordingly you have the power to change who is in your life and that will change your life if you hang out with people who are Learners and Growers if you follow people who are Learners and Growers you are more likely to be a learner and grower yourself we have to clear out the bad before we can bring in the good there is no way that you can have good behavior success and goals if your life is stuffed with too much bad so here's what we're going to do it's our very very big challenge are you ready we are going to do a cleanse and I don't mean a body cleanse or a health cleanse those are great too we are going to do a toxic relationship cleanse I wish I had fireworks I love a toxic relationship cleanse are you ready can you say like yes I'm gonna do it Vanessa I'm gonna do a toxic cleanse I have four steps for this cleanse they start from easiest and they go to hardest I want you to do all four but if you have to start with just the first one that's okay too first step one immediately after this webinar I want you to unfollow people who do not inspire you who do not help you who do not make you feel good really like I want you to get real serious with this go through every single person you follow and unfollow here's the thing if you have someone who you're worried that they will see that you unfollow them you can hide right so on Instagram at least you can hide someone's feed so you're still following but you don't see it I want you to be aggressive about this if you follow someone you should know that they are going to give you content that makes you feel good that supports your goals so unfollow that's the very first thing I want you to do second thing I want you to do remember these get harder as we go one thing that I found that happens to me let me just try to explain this kind of a weird concept is I unfollowed a lot of people the beginning of the year great but I noticed there are people who are not as supportive as I would like they they're my out folks like I still they still have to be in my life but I can't but I want to move them out as much as possible I noticed when they emailed me it totally ruined my morning and so I still had to email with them and I was like what do I do here's what I want you to do I want you to create what I call a control filter in your email so you probably still have to get email from this person but at least you can control when you check it a control filter is you go into your email settings and you create a little rule for that person that whenever that person emails you it immediately goes into a folder and then you can control when you check it that way I know there's some people we can't quite asked to leave our lives hopefully we can but there's some people we can't that way you know that you're boxing them in that folder and you get to check it when you feel you have the strength when you have the support so that they're not just popping into your inbox whenever they want so create a control filter for the people who don't support you next I want you to to cancel plans you dread open up your calendar you can do it open up your calendar look at the next month of plans as you scan those month of plans are there people who you're like I am dreading being with this person cancel say no thank you especially in the first few weeks of the year if you are seeing people who do not support you and your growth mindset it will be incredibly hard to get that momentum on those goals cancel plans you dread blame it on me be like oh I'm so sorry I'm seeing my friend Vanessa we can just hang out you just rewatch this webinar again right just blame it on me I am I'm totally okay with that fourth this is the hardest one I think so if we clear out the bad that's step one but we have to fill it with the good can you find your growth people when you think about what you want to win at for next year where are your growth people where are they hanging out how can you spend more time with them all those people with the in arrows make time with them schedule more time with them ask keeper questions with those people so as you're moving people out you're also moving people in so cancel the plans you dread and make plans with your growth people the other thing that I'm so excited about I've never been able to offer this before is if you're looking for growth-minded professionals we are finally opening up community in people school and there are three different buckets of our students I want to go through them briefly before I go into step number two and three first professionals these are very high achieving growth-minded individuals with big career goals second we have a bucket of entrepreneurs or side Hustlers these are folks who are starting their own thing and they're trying to build their own practice their own service their own product and the third group the most fun group is pivoter these are folks who are in people's School looking to change something try something new change something reset a trajectory and they also join so if you're looking for kind of a growth-minded group we finally are going to talk about that I'm talk about that at the very end here's the key success is contagious the right people will magnify your goals so don't just think about what your goals are think about who is going to help you with those goals okay talked about the people let's do step number two oh CT said pivers that's me yay okay step number two big my goal is big and you're going to see why in a second let's play a little game I want you to think back to 2013 think back to 2013 who were you what were you doing what' you look like who was in your life how much have you changed in the last 10 years since 2013 think of all the things you've done seen achieved are you hanging out with different people do you look different is your job different what has been different in the last 10 years okay next question how much do you think you will change in the next 10 years so close your eyes think about 2033 2033 what will you be doing in 2023 20 no 2033 what will you be doing in 2033 what will you look like what will your life be like who will you be hanging out with what will you feel like in 2033 Bill Gates and this is backed up by science we massively underestimate how much we will change change in the next decade what's amazing about this is this is actually a studied psychological illusion this is me in one of my many awkward stages just thought I would throw a picture of me in my awkward stage because I think we forget how much we can change this is a studied psychological illusion in which people of all ages believe they have experienced significant personal growth and change in the past but will not substantially grow in the future what's incredible about this is when they do these research studies they found that even when they ask students to think about their past changes and accomplishments even then they have trouble predicting how much they potential they have to change in the next decade we underestimate how much we can change so we have two big activities we're going to do next I don't want you to underestimate yourself if you underestimate yourself you're limiting yourself and your growth so we have to think big so we don't underestimate how much we can change first question where do you want to be in one year so you're going to come back and join me I hope for my annual goal setting training next year what do you want to put in chat what will you want to tell me in one year who will you be what will you look like what will you feel like what what will you have achieved in one year's time and we're going to do your desired word or phrase so we talked about our word or phrase for 2023 what do you want your word or phrase to be for 2024 and by the way if you already know it would you put it in chat I would love love love love to know okay so what is your 2024 word or phrase could it be balance level up boundaries learning get my raise wins Harmony build my team what is your word or phrase o Greg said renew barah said equinity I love it oh Patrick said profitable April said light CT confident okay specific specific specific the more specific you can be the better with these words we're going to take these words and by the way if you haven't thought of your word yet it's okay we can hit pause on that so think about your word go back to your goal wheel okay so go back to your goal wheel and I want you to write a win that you want for each area of your goal wheel what is the win you want in business what is the win you want with your friends what is the win you want with family personal passion spiritual health the more drilled down we can be the better this is what's going to inform our goals so next year when I ask you what was your biggest win in each area what would you what do you want to say that is and by the way these can be both getting things like getting a raise or um starting a new business or making more friends or finding your soulmate but it also could be stopping things it's a win to stop things to stop a bad behavior to stop a toxic person to stop doing something that isn't serving you so it can be both getting things and stopping things so what are your biggest wins for each area now could you see this question was coming where do you want to be in 10 years this is the exciting one okay so imagine 2033 imagine 20 2033 what do you want your wins to be what will you have achieved what will you have gotten think about your big wins in 10 years whatever you're thinking to yourself it's not big enough I know it's not big enough because we underestimate our change in our potential this has been studied over and over again and when I ask my students this question they always underestimate themselves they cut their potential short so whatever you're thinking two Exit 3 exit five exit make it bigger so whether that's getting paid more finding more friends being more confident finding your purpose make it bigger if you limit yourself your goals are going to be smaller the bigger we can dream the better we get let's drill down into more specifics so if you're having trouble you're like I I just can't toxit Vanessa it's too hard okay let's drill down into what you're missing so a lot of the times when we think about goals we think about achieving or doing new things but we have to address the underlying uh holes that we need to fill so what skills are missing when you think about that 10-year goal or that one-year goal what's missing and here's how I like to think about it I think about skills in two buckets I made this mistake for a long time by the way for a long time I focused solely on technical skills so GPA certifications degrees um professional accolades I never thought about the people skills which is why I struggled for so long as I I missed all the relationship building the communication skills the presenting aspect of success so you might have missing both you might be missing both you might be missing one so I want you to I want to give you some examples so are you missing when you think about your one-year goal or your 10e goal are you missing technical skills technical skills could be time management it could be productivity it could be a professional certification it could be learning organization it could be fixing your resume or getting profile help it could be learning a specific skill like programming or marketing it could be an asset like a new business card or a new website it could be productivity or changing your habit habits those are technical skills so I want you to think to yourself in order for me to achieve my 10-year goal what skill am I missing gotta get really specific on this because part of your goal is going to be filling in that goal those those skill gaps or are they people skills do you need more presence or more confidence confidence was a big one at the very start of the workshop do you need to work on your conversation do you want to be a master conversationalist do you have to work on collaboration or teamwork do you have to work on pitching yourself or being more assertive being both likable and assertive do you have to work on your negotiation tactics your sales tactics do you have to work on building a network do you need to build a better network of people around you do you have to work on being indispensable to the people in your life those are actually people skills and they are very different than technical skills so want you to think about what are these skills again we're going to fill in the blank in order to achieve your one-year goal or your 10-year goal what people skills do you need let me give you an example so most people school students start people school with a um a very specific career goal for example I want a raise right I want to raise I want a I want a 20% raise or I want to get a a promotion what skills are missing for you to get that in a technical need or a technical skill maybe to get that goal you need an annual review a really Stellar annual review that's a piece missing before you can get a raise and maybe you have to finish a professional certification that you know will help you get your raise those just examples of technical skills versus what people skills would you need to get that goal so for example do you have to learn how to present you know that if you want that raise you're going to have to really level up your presentation skills and another people skill is relationship building with a specific person do you have to level up with your boss how do you do that do you have to level up with your manager or in sales those are very specific people skills so we're drilling down I know I'm going fast take a little break okay we talked about what win you want for each area let that inform your goal your goal might be acquiring the missing skill so a win is different than a goal a win is great and you want to achieve that right we want to be reminded of wins all the time but a goal could be acquiring the people skill or the technical skill you need to get that win so for each area or your most important areas it's a lot to do all five areas at a time so I would actually pick your lowest rated area and start there so if you had a one a two or a three in that goal wheel that's where I would start what win do you want to have for next year and what skill are you missing that is your goal when we talk about a goal we're talking about acquiring what we need to get the win it's a little bit of a different way to think about goals okay active here we go choose your growth time I'm going to say something that I think people are I'm curious how you're what you're going to think about for this okay choose your growth time why if you want to see what someone truly values look at their calendar so many times I just have to this is this is the reason why I think most people fail in their goals is because they have these amazing goals they dream really big and they don't set aside time to activate so they walk around all year saying I really want this huge big goal and then I ask when are you working on it oh I just think about it thinking about your goal and working on your goal are actually two different things yes I want you to dream big and think and strategize and dream storm but I also want you to activate and that means setting aside specific time in your calendar where you are going to work on your goals if you have these big goals you have to have even more time so let's look at how this could work so if you open up your calendar what does it say about you you can go ahead and open your calendar right now open your calendar right now what does your calendar say about you you don't have a calendar at just want you to think about what your next 30 days looks like what are you spending the most time doing is it purposeful or are you scrolling on social media or watching TV is it not purposeful is it being sucked by toxic people is it going into tasks that don't serve your big goals I want you to open your calendar and I want you to think about when you are going to activate this goal another mistake I see people make or I should say it's not a mistake it's a trap a trap that people make is they want to do their goal a little bit every day anyone ever has this ever happened anyone before where um you're like great I'm gonna work on my my goal five minutes every day I think it's really hard to do anything every day like it is so hard to get the activation energy the starting energy to do anything even it's for five minutes every day so I'm actually going to say something crazy which is I do not I do not want you to work on your goal every day you can if you want to but I actually think it can be really hard to work on your goal every day especially if it's big instead I want you to try something different what I want you to do instead there's a couple different toxics you can do see which one feels the best to you is try a goal day this is a day or a weekend you set aside to hit your goal hard whatever that goal is so it could be a all day Saturday or a weekend or an all day Friday where you take an entire goal day or an entire goal weekend and you know that is your growth day you could also try a Sprint so this is over the course of a week you let's say cancel all of your afternoon meetings and you just have a Sprint across a series of days where you're like you know second week of Jan January I am getting up at 5:00 a.m. and I'm doing a Sprint at 5: a.m. for that one week that's called a Sprint if you it depends on how you learn your productivity hack some people work better with repeated learning days other people work better with a Sprint so depends on how you work you also could try learning lunches which which is a set aside time once a week or once a month that repeats in your calendar that you know is dedicated to working on your goal especially this is important if you had a lot of skills missing so if you had a lot of technical skills or people skills missing learning lunches can help you fill in the gaps with your learning right you're learning every Friday at lunch or you're learning every Monday at lunch that way you're finding learning time if you really want to be extra you could do learning time and growth time so learning time is when you're specifically acquiring a new skill and goal or growth time is when you're actually working on getting that goal yes okay can I help can I help can I help please I would love to help so my year my word for 2023 as you know was aggressively helpful we are still in 2023 as I film this so I want to be aggressively helpful one thing that I really want to do and this is the first time that we've ever done this we're going to do it for 2024 is I want to help you every single week this year if you want to do a learning lunch with us every single week you can we are launching for the first time in 2024 48 weekly account accountability calls in these weekly accountability calls you're not only going to be practicing activating skills case studies meeting other students doing breakout sessions it is a way to get actual help on your goals I saw April our people School coach who in here she hosts these weekly calls in addition to weekly calls you also get monthly live office hours with me and these I teach new science we do a new AI class where I'm teaching you the latest and greatest on AI so that we can keep you updated on it I answer your questions we do log Line review I do case studies so we're doing weekly calls we're doing monthly calls I want to help you every step of the way I do not want you to lose momentum so now I'd love to talk about people school for a little bit before I take questions so I know a lot of you have been waiting and waiting for this class of people school it's going to be different and the reason why is this is the first time with this cohort you are learning with others so not only are you coming on to do those accountability coaching calls we now have a community where we're doing chat you have profiles you can click on they don't look so cute yet we're working on them but you have profiles you can click on you can actually build your network and learn with other people so people school is 12 Advanced people skills it is geared towards High Achievers so we gear this towards High achieving professionals it is completely virtual and you can take it whenever you want you have lifetime access to the core modules so you can watch it as many times as you want and you can take it anytime anywhere so here's kind of a breakdown of how it works here's by the way a little screenshot from April's last call with a couple folks who came on so first you get your 12 video training modules these are the 12 core skills that I think every professional needs Master conver mastering conversation learning Charisma the science of likeability how to be more assertive set boundaries ask for what you want how to level up connection all those people skills that I listed in the past slide that's what we teach selling yourself pitching ideas negotiation asking for raise if I don't have a people skill and people School request it and I'll make a bonus for you so whenever in the past we've had a people student who was like oh Vanessa I really wanted to learn about Charisma for Content creators I created a bonus and we now have that bonus in the library and when you come in you get access to all of those bonuses so in each module you learn science a framework to activate it and a strategy so we have actual strategies and action steps for each each module also has a Q&A section we also now have the audio and the transcripts available so if you are an audio listener you like to relisten to skills a lot of our students will watch the skill and they listen to the skill while they're walking or driving to kind of reinforce it we also have our email coner Carolyn and Jess are on as well and they answer your questions as you're learning you are learning with us at your own pace on your own time when you have a question you're able to email our coners join a weekly call or join the monthly call with me so you're really I want you to feel supported as you learn I mentioned my live monthly workshops with me I teach new science the latest and greatest so it's I want all the newest content to feel really active this is also where I'll answer your questions if you have any questions on things that are missing we do questions and case studies and then of course the new our new accountability coaching calls weekly goal progress activating skills practice and breakout sessions we have some new bonuses okay I'm super excited about this I worked for the last month we finally are certified by SHRM society for human resource management we now can offer 33.5 professional development credits if you take people school so I'm very excited we're going to try to offer even more continuing education credits with different organizations um so you get that when you come in you can get it you can get qualified for continu Education also what's here's just a couple of bonuses by the way that we've added over the years we have many more than this you also get access to our office hours Library so I've been doing office hours since 2018 you get access to all those recordings so I've answered hundreds of questions if I you don't even have to wait for office hours to answer it you can see if I've answered it in the previous office hours the biggest thing for 2024 and so this is why I really want you if you can join this week is you will get access to the 2024 cohort this is a community of high like high Achievers growth-minded folks who are committed to achieving their goals this year we have a community Discord so we are posting I actually haven't even told people so students this yet but this month in Discord we have all kinds of surprises coming we post conversation starters every day we're posting new science we're going to do research Friday you're also going to get sneak peeks on our latest blog post that we released out to the public later and then of course below each video you can add comments I read every single people School comment so when you're in people school I am following along with your progress I look at all your comments below each video to help and support you as you're learning the last new bonus we have a lot of them this year is our new AI tools so we are launching out launching our new AI tools for peopleo students our people school students right now already have access to them and they're already using them they've been testing them you now have access to these so actually I'm gonna invite Scott on to talk about these because he built them I like you better come on and talk about them because you know more than me this is Scott hello hello everybody give you a little break too yeah yes I got to sit down so my head he sit because he's so much taller than me that you don't even see his face okay so um tell us why AI yes yes tell us well AI is probably that would be the world's word for 2023 it would be my guess would be AI tools at the launch of chbt and all the things that that has already changed and will certainly continue to change going to next year and it's the first time I think that we've been able to really apply some software to people skills you know we we and we're talking about people skills by the way or we're talking about software but we have to remember that people skills is still how businesses run right people buy from people they still buy from organizations that have people that are run by people and the only way to differentiate yourself I think moving forward is to have excellent people skills so we had wondered for a long time when I first saw the AI tools I was like oh cool good for research good for productivity but we have figured out a way when I say we I really mean Scott because he's the one who built them he figured out a way to use AI for communication and Charisma so so it's the first time you can really kind of use something software with more of a softer fuzzier approach so the first tool that we launched two people school students that we've gotten amazing feedback on so far is charisma coach so if you've read Q's you know about the Charisma framework that's inside of there the competence versus Charisma uh or competence versus warmth that leads to charismatic communication we built this tool that lets you submit your emails your voicemails message scripts and it will grade you based on how charismatic that piece of communication is and then if it's not as charismatic as it could be offer suggestions on how to improve it so see here I'm demoing I pasted in an email and Charisma coach immediately reads the email it tells me where it was was it warm was it competent my tone and then it revises the email based on the Charisma framework rules it also gives you a little Charisma score the whole goal here is that whenever you write an email a chat you can pass paste it an entire presentation so here I wrote a little presentation on Water I pasted my script into the into the Charisma coach and it just immediately looked at my script gave me feedback rewrites it for me and then gives me a Charisma score my goal is that as you're learning the tools and the skills in people school you can get immediate feedback on what you're writing and what you're doing yeah this allows it to be much more interactive it allows you to make Vanessa's principles that she talks about in people School apply to specifically your communication whether it's email presentations or whatever it is you can get feedback directly to your specific use case and the thing with people skills is it's often so individual or so slightly different for each person it can be hard to apply a universal rule but these tools let you do that yes this is I just Clayton thank you so much this is one of our people students he posted this in Discord I think yesterday or the day before uh you can read that for them too no bribery involved in Discord I was like thank you Clayton thank you yeah he says I've been running email text through the Charisma coach tool and the results been astounding the suggestions are straightforward I skewed towards confidence and adding just one or two sentences added warmth while maintaining my voice yes and that's what we exactly want to see is you don't want to change who you are but you do want to present your best communication style that you can and a lot of the traditional AI tools are quite boring like you put their your email in and it gives you a very sterile response so this is a way to have a much more authentic much more sticking to your voice response so um people who students get access to that for the entire year as they go through all the modules we also launched a second one and this is more practical it's called sop aai go ahead yeah so you know you've already been talking for about an hour today you've done this course uh for the last five or so probably plus years you've written books you've done hundreds of YouTube videos you've written hundreds of Articles you've done podcast interviews you've done speeches true how do you distill all of that knowledge down into something that's more accessible well we loaded all that into an AI version of Vanessa and you can go in and ask that pretty much anything you want to and it will search the entire database of content that Vanessa's ever written spoken or recorded and give you a synthesized answer and you can see and citations so you can see it asks me or my knowledge and then it tells you exactly where those came so I use this tool for myself yeah I literally forget what I yeah I'm like what have I said about asking for a race what have I said about uh talking if you're socially anxious what have I said about Sage presence and I literally search this for anything that I've said in the past about that um so it's also a very fast way to get an immediate answer you can also ask me school I will also answer but sometimes for fun they make fun of me in office hours I answer in office hours then Scott uses sop to have it answer and it often answers better than me which is a little bit crazy it just knows everything you've ever said about I know and what's great is it knows about people School of course too so if you're in people school you have a question about a lesson that's being taught or or something that you're talking about you can ask Vanessa as if she was right there still in the room with you and get more custom responses and more information and dive deeper on that particular subject we are building more so more are coming this is only the first two we have other ones in the works that'll be always always roll out to people so students in included I just want to share a couple testimonials and then I'm going to answer your questions but my when you first come into people School you pick a people School goal and my goal is you achieve that goal within the first few months so um we have people who've achieved their first goal in six months whatever your goal is it doesn't even have to be just professional it can also be personal my goal is to help you achieve that goal and we're trying to be aggressively helpful with how we do that coming forward so I'd love to take questions I also want you to think about you know do you need a reset right like can I help you this year if you've had the same goals over and over again where you feel like you just tried the same thing and it's not working and you want something new I would love to be that something new I would love to help and if not take this entire webinar and watch it over and over again these tools will work on their own so whether or not you're doing this for people's school I will keep putting out free content I will always be posting free videos and articles social posts so whether or not you join people's school or not I'm here I'm here for you this year I want to support you as you grow and you learn and now I will take your questions okay let's see so V says sometimes I feel like I'm the one who has to seek and nurture the relationship even with the people in my small Inner Circle do you have any recommendations for how to not be the one who's always responsible for being that person so my guess is that uh that is your superpower so there are different social strengths right everyone has a different social strengths some people social strengths are being amazing listeners some people are nurturers like you are some people are social creators like you're the one sending out the invites setting out the events um you know making all the plans for things I would make this role known so talk to your friends and say hey my goal for 2024 is to elevate and activate our relationships and I really want to make sure that I'm setting up but also you're setting it up too can I ask for your help and thinking of fun things that we can do together asking for help asking for advice is one of the most likable things that you can do this also does a couple things one is I want you to share your goal out loud with the people in your inner circle when you share your goal out loud it really helps and support you to asking for help on this saying I love being the n nurture I love supporting the group but I would love help in coordinating Friday night dinners or you know going out on adventures that would be make this year so much better how can I help in supporting your goals so you're stating your goal out loud you're asking for help and then you're offering help that is way your inner circle you can feel more equal and more reciprocity I love that's your superpower though that's a great one so CT is asking how can I improve on my executive conversation skills okay so to talk about talking to VIPs yes uh who uh maybe a little bit more intimidating for most folks to go talk to I have a kind of a weird approach to this but I think it's very practical and it works when you think about Executives or VIPs bosses managers investors um important folks there are two types of them in my opinion and if you approach them the wrong way you turn them off so the the first type is they are entertainers they love to tell stories they love to be the center of attention they love to be funny they like to be impressive they they want to be the one who are getting the accolades they love to have the attention in the room that's one type of executive the second type of executive they want to be entertained they want to listen to funny stories they want to hear you talk they want to hear you give interesting answers they don't want to have to lift the load of the conversation there are two very different types you need to identify which type of executive do you have if you have someone who likes to be the center of attention you want to throw them good questions juicy questions questions hey what what's your biggest goal for 2024 what was the highlight of 2023 hey are you watching anything funny on Netflix any recommendations do you have any podcasts you like you're putting them in the role of being able to share their wisdom their advice their stories their hilarity and then giving that them that attention if you have the other type that's the worst thing you can do you don't want to ask a bunch of questions like so for example I would say for me personally I think people often think that I I want to be the first but I do that for my job right like when I'm with you like I'm I'm talking I'm teaching I'm sharing when I'm with my friends when I'm in a casual setting I just want to listen I'm so tired I don't want to be you know interesting or fun I just want to listen and so I actually sometimes don't like all the questions people will sometimes ask me because I want them to tell me about themselves so figure out which one you have and then the one who wants to be entertained you want to be sharing stories you want to be coming up with really interesting ideas you want to be giving advice I would definitely keep story toolbox of all the stories that you like or are interesting or things you've learned so two different types yes Danielle is asking where can I have access to these gpts so when you join people School you get access to it in your course Library you can go in there and chat with it right inside the uh learning management system that we use that has all your other videos all your other lessons it's also available if you have a chat gbt Plus subscription you can use it inside of chat gbt which means you can use it inside the GPT Plus app one of the really cool things is you can also then use the talk to me me or talk to GPT feature which if you're doing more of a conversational uh type thing you want to get feedback on it's really helpful to have to naturally be able to speak to that GPT and get feedback via voice as well I I don't even think this is so cool like Scott it's very professional but like you can talk to it so you can also do conversation simulation yeah meaning like yes we have one tool where you can just paste in what you want to say but if you want to practice talking to your boss like just like the question we just had let's say that we we just talked about that now I'm like okay go to our chat in practice you can tell your CHT okay I have an executive um his name is Bill he's high in competence and um I need to practice telling him funny stories can we have a practice conversation it will have a practice conversation with you based on whatever you tell it about Bill you can even copy in copy in Bill's LinkedIn profile and it will scan his profile for his personality traits and talk to you as if it's Bill like it's it's inred testing it right now that yeah we're testing it right now to say that it's coming it's coming it's coming it's really coming soon so yes you can do all of that um and we're also considering maybe putting them on the GPT app store whenever that comes out yeah yeah uh qu's asking for people school is it a one-year cohort-based class and then access turns into replays that's it yeah so you get well you get one year of access to the live workshops and the accountability calls uh for people for this cohort this is the 2024 cohort yeah right you get lifetime access to the people School core modules uh and then you get a year of access to these bonus tools and you also get LIF so lifetime access to all the content like the core modules the bonus content like the um extra like things I've filmed um also access to our office hours Library so that's lifetime access so you always a lot of our students will retake it year after year and um that way you're with your cohort for the interior but you can always have access to the modules yeah uh lean's asking do you have a cheat sheet for wiws uh yeah in people school we do it's called our Charisma glossery I actually think if you if you have cues you get access to our Charisma glossery which is like um Charisma words there's warm words competent words danger zone Words which you shouldn't use and Charisma words Charisma words are a lot of those win words win achieve Master success compete power I just gave you that those are those are six pretty good ones yeah got a question from LinkedIn is there a way to cleanse in person versus in a virtual set I think I know does the question mean like we're trying to remove toxic people from our from our move toxic relationships uh it's easy to unfollow people on social media but what so what are some strategies that you might be able to follow in person if you're trying to scheduling in your boundaries so I think it's really important that if you're going to have growth time announce it to your team right so like if you for example let's say that you know that your most productive time is mornings um so something that we talked about in a couple office hours recently was golden hour so golden hour is that time during the day where you're most productive you do not want toxic people to disrupt your gold an hour right like it is super important they that at least that is protected so if you can in person or virtually actually either way is make an announce say hey one of my big goals for 2024 is I'm trying to make sure from 10:00 a.m. to 12 P.M every day I'm in like super golden hour I'm in the super productive time um I'm going to block it out on my calendar and I'm going to put a little sign on my door and that's my that's my time where I'm really digging in deep and trying to get things done I think the more um we are very clear about the time and boundaries we want at least we can protect the most precious times of the day so one identify your golden hour two see if you can identify their golden hour right because you don't have to talk to them during that time and three make it very clear that one of your goals 2024 is to protect it right like I think that's really a transparent way to do it without saying I don't want to talk to you right it's just saying I'm protecting my precious time this is your precious time I was I was going to do a Golem but I'm not going to yeah I'm not gonna do it it's gonna be horrible it's protecting your precious time okay Julie's asking um you mentioned being indispensable as a skill could you describe more what you mean yes oh my gosh thank you so much for asking that Julie so when you are indispensable on a team in a partnership in a friendship it means that you are thought of very highly and that you are someone who is so effective that you make everyone better so another way to think about this is are you the Lynch pin in something when we look at teams or high performing teams often there's a person on the team that when they are there in a meeting on an email in the office they make everyone better they have high standards they have a winning mindset they infect positivity they are contagious with healthy behaviors and they make sure we went out let's see hopefully you can still hear and see me go ask carollyn let's see so we want to make sure sorry if it went black for you we'll make sure we check it we just ask Caroline if people can still hear hopefully you can still hear me let's [Music] [Music] see oh we're back we're back woo hopefully you can still hear me hopefully you can okay um okay so um so being indispensible means that you make everyone better that you're U contributing to everyone's success that you also know everyone's goals as well as your own so you're very aware on how you can maximize or create an effect that is making everyone better so being indispensible is a is a couple of different people skills in one so being indispensible means um acting very good activation questions so knowing what questions to ask to activate someone else's behavior um being positively contagious we talk about this a lot skill number two in people skill what words are you using what cues are you using to set people up for Success um it's also the people skill of having an assertive or confident presence your presence is contagious the more assertive and confident you are the more you infect that in a good way with other people so being indispensible is actually three or four people skills in one and it I think is one of the most critical um ways to to be remembered and to be respected whether it's on a team or in a partnership yeah all right let's take one more question thanks for going through that yeah goodness goodness goodness let's see um let's do oh my gosh there's so many uh see I missed a couple one where do you think Alexander where do you think sales skills fits better Tech or people skills this is a really good question Alexander so when we talk about technical skills versus people skills I think with sales knowing your product or your service that you're selling is a technical skill so being excellent at knowing every aspect of what you're selling so for example I wrote people's school I wrote Every slide of people's school every word of people school I know it extremely well that is a technical skill right like the competence around what you're selling is one thing so how well do you know your product and service have you gone through your customers's experience so if your customers has used the product do you know exactly what they'll experience with onboarding using it trying not to use it knowing every aspect of your customer journey is actually I think a technical skill on the sales side building Rapport before you even get into sales what is your first impression when you hop on video hop on the phone or walk in a room how do you make a client feel both warm and competent how do you make sure they can both trust you and rely on you what kind of questions do you use to open that up then uh third presentation skills how do you make sure you're presenting and selling in a way that's captivating that's engaging that's not boring that's going to address or preempt any hesitations or sales hesitations and lastly how do you close in an assertive way that isn't going to be pushed how do you use vocal power for example to close a deal without having someone doubt you or have buyers regret those are all people skills so I think it's a little bit of both all right so let's remind people folks why is it the important to join this Co right now so of course it's the New Year yes uh which is a great time to get started on your goals for next year
